For me it was the switch to ultra jump that made the manga stand out so much more compared to the other parts. Giving araki a month Vs a week to make a chapter definitely made him step up his consistency in everything from the art, the characters and the writing.

The change to a new magazine not change anything in Araki's writing. its publisher wanted the new series to change magazines to boost sales. It's only due to that. To paraphrase a quote from weather report/domenico pucci: “You’re the worst kind of evil, one that doesn’t know it’s evil!” That was why pucci was good, because he thought his actions and motivations were just and righteous. Funny valentine, on the other hand, had acknowledged that his actions aren’t always morally good but still believes that everything he does is for the greater good, no matter how evil. To take another quote: “My heart and actions are utterly unclouded. They are all those of justice!” He doesn’t care about the “good” or “evil” of what he does, he only cares about getting what’s “just”. Valentine both contrasts and coincides with Enrico Pucci and it makes him a better villain for it.

Something I like about SBR is the tale of a guy against the world. SPOILERS FOR PART 7!! ------------------ From the start of things, Johnny hasn’t had the best life. He basically killed his brother by accident, mentally shattered by his father and was left as soon as he was put in a chair. It genuinely makes you hurt for the guy, even if you see him as the greediest Jojo. He ran an entire freaking horse race without legs. Even if he didn’t win, he still did better than most of the other racers. His development is good, because we’re growing along with him. We grow to love Gyro with him, we worry for him when hes hurt, and all that. That’s magnificent storytelling, I would say. Even as he lost his best friend, we weeped right along with Johnny. God, part 7 is so good. I’m gonna reread it soon.

Also spoilers Johnny realized he doesn't need to win at the end. before he could never beat Diego while his brother might've been able. His dad doesn't love him like he did his brother. But at the end his dad comes back before the race is even over. It was about the journey. He doesn't have to beat Diego or win the race for him to be adequate nor does he have to live up to his brother's legacy.

In parts 3-6, I loved having stands, but that lead to a villain of the week format that sometimes drew out the story too long. Part 4 mostly sidesteps this by being more slice of life. But part 7 integrates them in a way that never felt too long to me, despite being the longest part at the time of it's conclusion. There's more of a sense of plot progression. I often feel like certain secondary characters in JoJo don't get enough time (once again, not true of part 4), but because part 7 is about a duo and others are solidly secondary, them not getting a ton of focus feels fine. And the deaths that happen are a bit more spread out. And generally, it just doesn't feel as juvenile while also being fun.

For me, when i read SBR for the first time, one thing I loved a lot was that in the background of all the Stuff that happens, theres the simple concept of The Actual Race going on and its this consistant driving force in the part layered underneath all the stuff with Johnny/Gyro, Valentine, the corpse parts etc, and so it created this great flow where no matter what was going on there was this underlying sense of direction, and the fact that there was a physical goal place to be, which eventually becomes almost like childsplay by the end of the part with all the stuff going on. But it really helped ground the part and kept it from being too "dense" to digest if you understand me. Also when I opened up the first chapter and I saw the first character introduced was a baller native american guy I knew the part was gonna hit different!

I've had my gripes with this part, mainly for Araki making shortcuts such as Johnny knowing race being about the body parts or how The World works within 2 seconds but only reason I was able to forget it all was because of Gyro and Jojo's dynamic-- but mainly Gyro, he is a badass. This whole part reminded me of that one scene in Stardust Crusaders when Polnaref and Kakyoin did the handshake. I think it was also great to have "Hamon" as well as stands too, it added a lot of variety.

@@ihatehandleupdate I actually like it. I can understand why some people may not like it, as its quite fan servicey (seriously he has the exact same stand and performs the same moves), but it gives closure to George Joestar saying Johnny could never beat Diego, as he actually couldn't, but it didn't matter cause George was still proud of Johnny and Diego, quite literally, was defeated because of himself, cause he was too drunk on power. Plus at least its an alt world Diego, so SM Diego isn't revived and negates his death, plus it was kind of sad how little effect Dio's counterpart actually had in SBR, so it was a fitting end to the "Diego/Johnny rivalry" parallel.

In terms of story itself it's not my favorite part but the use of Gyro and Johnny do make it well worth it and it has compelling parts. My name is Johnny Joestar." for me even if it was not a western its how the relationship of johhny and gyro grows to a level where gyro and johnny treat each other like strangers but at the end are treating each other how family would. i hope if sbr is animated they can live up to the manga. although part 6 is still my favorite part to date just due to much i liked fallowing around the main cast but for its own merits steel ball run is better in many ways too. I hope Hirohiko Araki the best if he ever moves into anything else then jojo's bizarre adventures and hope he can stay happy with with he works with and stays healthy. and for those who are reading this,i want to thank you a part of the jojo community for reading this and supporting araki's works.

The way Araki illustrates the human spirit in part 7 for the lack of a better term. The main focus is character growth and how the characters within SBR express themselves when faced with a challenge or shortcoming. And how they approach all these challenges and setbacks is where these characters find their growth. And because Araki applies this theme to both the protagonists and antagonists, it creates this incredibly unique human epic/drama

Why people like steel ball run: artwork, characters (valentine mostly), setting (cowboys are cool), part 7 is also easy to pick up because it’s a full reset with only a few references so you can just relax and not be like part 8 where you have to read a 100 page essay of exposition, I still like part 8 more but part 7 is very good

I was happy to finally read part 7 last year and I loved it. No way any part could beat it until Part 8, imo. I loved Steel Ball Run but Jojolion was just my type of story, I love the mysteries and the Town of Morio is nice to revist. The characters all around are great and the main Jojo was so well thought out. Between him and Jonny I would probably choose Johnny in stand power and Gyro was a great 2nd main character. But the stand sot and walet go beyond was crazy even compared to Tusk act IV

one of my favorite things about jojo's is how opinions on parts can be so divergent...i also loved sbr, but getting through jojolion was such a slog for me! that being said, you're far from the only one i've seen say that they really enjoyed jojolion, which really is part of what makes jojo's so good to me. everyone gets something different out of every part

So far, Steel Ball Run seems like the most consistent part of Jojo’s. I mean, it’s still bizarre, but it doesn’t feel like any parts got rewritten or changed or just weren’t planned.

lol it's literally the opposite. Part 7 is the part that has undergone the most changes such as Sandman's power, Valentine's design, his personality. The character of Hot pant was to be Johny's love interest for example. even Jesus was forgotten. part 1,2,3,6 are the only parts to have been planned from start to finish

I definitely enjoyed SBR when I read it, especially at climatic fights with Dio and Funny Valentine, and Jojolion is now my personal favorite Part of Jojo! Hope y'all also give Part 8 some love as well as Part 7 (both of them are good)! I can understand why it's hard to get into reading Jojo compared to watching it though (I know some friends that felt Araki's art style was hard to get used to because it can be overstimulating and detail-heavy, as well as SBR being very narative-heavy in some parts).

@@72Null Yeah, part of me wonders how that would adapt in anime form, and here's hoping they find a clever way to work around those parts (having some narrative-heavy moments in some manga/novels can be okay, but it's something not easy to adapt into other mediums). 0_0

Recently, I've been binging JoJo's content on KZbin and I've only ever read Part 1 (couldn't even finish it). Downloaded Jotaro's part (Part 3?) and the Star Dust Crusaders, it's been close to half a year now and I've still not watched past the introduction arc. I want to get into it, but I seem to always get disinterested whenever I make up my mind... I think it will be easier to get into Steel Ball Run tho... It seems to have the easiest to get into with its solid pacing and the premise of the story being rather simple with great character writing (from all the snippets I've seen). Hopefully, I can get into the JoJo groove after finishing this part, since it is its own story from a parallel universe to the main one.

Steel Ball Run kept its cast tight so the characters have better chances to shine and carry loads of depth. The overall story uses the Steel Ball Run race as a means of progressing the story. The further Johnny and Gyro travel, the more they learn about themselves, the race, and who organized the race. Both significantly grow from their adventure, they triumph and share in the sorrows as the race progresses. The villains and antagonists are equally compelling and have their own goals that they've set out for the race. The powers and techniques used in the story are wild and tell a lot about the characters who use them.
