I've found that one of the things that helps you overcome shame of past sins is acknowledging that we have many weaknesses and frailties. We aren't fully evil or useless like Protestantism pretends, but we have some weaknesses and tendencies towards evil. Acknowledging that "yes, I sinned like that in the past. It's ok, because God has forgiven me, and I will forgive myself. Instead of beating myself up, I will just focus on becoming a better person. There are many good things that God has made about me, and I will work to improve them. If others think what i did was very shameful or bad, then it's ok, because I can't control the way others think. God has forgiven me, he has cleaned my sins and made me white as snow, given me a fresh chance"

I find myself worrying too much about what other people think of me. The root of this is Pride, and that's a deadly sin. There's certainly discernment in how open I should be about my sins, who I should be open with, when I should, etc. But overall, I would caution one against thinking so much about themselves, that they worry about how they look subjectively by others. How we look objectively is important; not subjectively. We're called to be charitable towards others, and they should be charitable toward us. Ultimately, it matters how God sees us. We should be sincerely contrite, and ensure we're "right by God." If we've done all we can do, especially through God's graces, then there's no reason to worry.

I see it the same as alcohol, tobacco, and money: yes, these things can easily lead to sin, but they're not themselves sinful, nor is their use, necessarily - and moderation and thoughtfulness are some of the things we can employ to avoid making them so

I distinctly remember having a swear fest in front of some peers around grade four because I noticed it got me attention and made them laugh. But I felt so bad that night that I promised God to not swear anymore. The next day they had wanted me to continue the show but were quite surprised when I was upfront and honest. I had no idea that making promises to God was not considered normal, so I just told them thinking they would understand. In hindsight, I am still glad that I was upfront about God. I got back into the habit of swearing a few different times during my life. But I kept deciding to give it up because I just didn't want to be that kind of a person. It wasn't in judgement of anyone else, but it always bothered my conscience. At first I had to replace the vulgar words with joke/fake swear words. Then after that I trained my mind to resort to prayer instead of being even jokingly vulgar. It seems strange, but it really is just a matter of habit. Now, by God's grace, I just offer up my frustration with a short prayer - such as "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, I love ye, save souls." Every once in a while I do catch myself saying "shoot", but it tends to be more when I mess up and am not sure what to do, rather than out of anger - and not uncontrolled. Anyway, I hope this might help anyone else who wishes to give up the habit, to show that it is possible by God's grace, even when falling into it multiple times during life.

@@pauljohnson6019 By the grace of God I would estimate five to seven years. After writing the original comment I have caught myself whispering the "sh" word in a panic once a year or so (such as when a candle fell over). Therefore it is not 100% conquered as I had previously thought. I am grateful to God for conquering the habit of swearing, but I hope to one day have it off my tongue entirely. Until then I will accept the humiliation as a thorn in my side. God bless.

so all kinds of profanity are sins? so theoretically we can just make up words that are sins to say? who decides what words are a sin to say, man or God? it really doesn't make sense to argue that using "profane" words for any reason is a sin. Society/custom determines the meaning of all words. It's completely arbitrary that "tree" means "woody, perennial plant." Society (at least US society) has determined the meaning behind the words "no thanks" and "f*** off". If someone rejects the latter words' determined meaning but doesn't reject the meaning of all the other words in the English language then they're living in their own head space but not in society (as far as language goes).

One time I was being an a**hole and my brother called me out. He said "Dude, why are you being such an a**hole?". It took me a bit to realize my vulgar behavior, and at first I was salty that he called me out with such directness, but now I am grateful that he used such vulgar language to describe my vulgar behavior - it helped open my eyes to my vile behavior. I think vulgar language can have it's place in authentic charity, if used correctly.

My grandmother went to a Methodist Sunday school, way back in about 1908. The Minister there taught her certain standards, along with the other children. In 1962,3,4 & thereafter, my grandmother taught me some of the things that the good Minister had taught her, including 'not swearing'. Now, if you wanted to argue with my grandmother on such subjects, she would ask you if you wanted to feel her wedding ring around the back of your ear.

@@mattberg916 Agreed. Nobody wants to cause physical harm to their children. But if we want to let our children learn before they suffer for poor behavior we have to punish them for bad behavior. "But what about timeout/scolding/taking away a toy" Nobody is saying those punishments shouldn't be allowed nor are we saying that physical punishment is the only thing that should be used. Just that physical punishment shouldn't be avoided solely because it is physical.

I think a main problem however is the subjective nature of swear words. Take the word “Whore”. Many people see this word as a curse, but in reality it is just a descriptor, and yes, it is a vulgar descriptor, but that’s because what it describes is vulgar behavior I.e.,: “Whoring”. In this similar sense (and I’ll sensor myself for the sake of the nature of the video) the F word is NOT referring to sex as such, but sex within a certain context. To have sex for the sake of lust and pleasure but without love is to “F***”. To have sex in the context of love and marriage is to “Make Love”. In fact perhaps the reason the F word is seen as bad is because it speaks to this reality that sex outside of love and marriage is simply F-ing, but it cannot be making love. In this sense F can be used to describe other extremes. Idk, I don’t buy that any use of curse words is wrong, lest we fall into an overly legalistic mentality. And if we end up using non-curse words to replace curse words, then they end up serving the same teleological end. If I say “Wow that’s an extremely beautiful Waterfall” and feel a deep appreciation for it, and someone with less command of language from the cities says “Wow that’s an F-ing beautiful waterfall” and feels a deep appreciation for it, then I believe both are expressing themselves with the language suitable for them. But just because Someone says in a crowded bar “I want to have sex with that girl” vs “I want to F her” doesn’t make either sentence more or less respectable. Both express a desire towards wickedness. Srry for the long response

Matt correct me if wrong but I believe The earlier days of Pints with Aquinas had an audio podcast on the topic of cursing that when I listened to it made feel that cursing was permissible like using the f bomb is ok because it came from a Dutch word to breed. As long as it was not used in a vulgar sense.It still feels dirty to use that word and I guess that is God speaking to me in my heart. I’m much more of a fan of the later PWA videos with Jonathan Prague and Fr Gregory pine and their explanations on why cursing is wrong. It’s good to see today the PWA channel promoting us to higher standard with our speech. Thanks for your work in building up the kingdom!

I grew up with swearing being common place. Often times it was used when surprised(someone scares another) hurt(someone fell down the stairs, as I did commonly lol) and to emphasize something(make a point you are trying to make more boldened or to try and correctly express the size or scope of something). Although with this, swearing was also used against another. Calling someone a such and such or telling them to do such and things. Put like this, I think swearing becomes more than just saying the "words you can't say on TV" as George Carlin put it. It is about how we are directing our speech, whether or not we are degrading the human person, life or worse of all God(although we would typically call that blaspheming). I think there is a mighty difference from me saying the F-bomb when I get surprised, hurt or to emphasize a point trying to be maid, and using it to degrade, insult or otherwise scandalize someone. Now a counter thing someone will say is, well you could use a synonym for that word. And that is true, but if it is truly a synonym, then the two words mean the same thing, and if I am going to be using them in the same way, why not just go with the first word? Now, this is where scandal comes in. If I am aware that there are words that scandalize someone I am talking to, I see it as a moral duty to avoid those words as well as I can. Example: I have two friends who do not cuss. One is fine with hearing cussing one is not. So with one friend I might cuss, and with the other I will avoid it when possible. This is also why I would try and avoid cussing out in public, it may scandalize someone and I may not know that. There are also other reasons but for this that will do.

Exactly. My biggest issue when it comes to swearing is not just that swears and their euphemisms are synonymous, but also what determines one word to be socially acceptable but others not. I can avoid using certain words because people don't like them, but what determines a word to be socially acceptable? Not to mention some socially unacceptable words have become more accepted, meanwhile other words that used to be accepted aren't now. My issue isn't whether or not it's accepted, but why, and with the why being opinion and subject to change, I can't find myself agreeing with certain words being (arbitrarily) uncouth.

You know this is my number one vice but I always found it ironic that other Christian women (Catholic or protestant) would be more grievously offended by my vulgarity of speech than that of their rampant malicious gossip of others hidden behind a guise of piety because "they are praying for them" 😒 so all the sordid details are emphasized and elucidated for good measure doing irreparable harm to the persons reputation without any regard for true charity. But of course they told it with modesty of speech, with impeccable eloquence and with "good intentions" I'm sure! 🙄 The irony is where my vulgarity is venial, their gossip is mortal, breaking commandment. What would you say to the usage of crass words with a gradient scale in order to communicate with precision? Granted precision of speech and speaking to your audience would be the reins on the speech. If malice is in speech, or the speech does not reflect the object in the mind there is sin. Speaking with philosophical or literate precision is a great barrier to speaking with rougher characters. This creates an occasion of unevenly yoked conversations that destroy trust. It is in speaking well of people and things that we love them. If we speak with precision: - cursing is always a mortal sin - swearing is often a moral sin - vulgar speech can be a mortal sin given circumstances of justice - foul/crass speech is always a venial sin but is the entry point of intentional impiety - speaking of vulgar things with vulgar speech is proper as long as they are spoken to and by people disposed by their state in life to those objects without intention to magnify the words. Veiled speech has its purpose but only to protect those who should not be present to hear the conversation in the first place.

I only have to remember Matthew 5:22 and Colossians 4:6,...I can not ask God to damn anyone.."G,D, that person, that situation...so forth." And I may not hate/loathe a person; but using a profanity as an adjective....is ok ...for now. This keeps certain people at bay, and the Father in control. Oh, also I may not teach others, things that loosens self control. So this is a situation similar to Paul and Peter over the need to convert to Judaism then to Christ. In order to reveal His love for us by giving us His Son, Jesus, to suffer and die on our behalf. He gave us free will and our forefathers abused it and we reap the consequences, which is our fallen, sinful state. He used Mary’s sinlessness to bring about our freedom from sins by using her as a vessel for His son to become one of us. It is what He decided, His reasons and wisdom far exceeds our own and we might not totally understand His reasons, but must accept what He did with faith

I pray that the Lord enlightens you and enriches you with His creativeness. As for myself, if that helps, having curse words might make me stop watching a movie if I feel it’s too much for me.

With the same mouth that we bless and worship God. This same filthy mouth we use to nail Jesus to the Cross each time we curse. It is stated in the Bible. I understand the gravity of the sin we all do against God by swearing. I pray for anyone who still curses because it took me the worse curses to be guided by the Holy Spirit to not do it anyone. Previous people that knew me from the past are now let down that I do NOT curse. Honestly I did it to make people do their job steadily, with sense of extreme precision and determination to accomplish the job. I was so wrong because of what I did to Jesus at the Cross each time.

@@Unclenate1000 The reaction is determined by the meaning. If a person doesn't find someone else spitting on them offensive then they don't understand the meaning of the act (at least in the US). Certain people that think "f*** off" has the same meaning as "no thanks" just don't understand the meaning of the words. Those certain people can live in their own head space but they're the ones who either don't understand or are choosing to reject the the custom/norms of the language of their society.

Some might say vulgar words in movies reflect real life...cussing is in real life BECAUSE Hollywood has inserted this language into movies. We need to do better. Short answer is yes it is. But I would advise looking into the catechism or watching Ascension Presents KZbin channel for better answers. The act itself is grave and I guess you could say mortal. However, responsibility of culpability can be reduced depending on circumstances. But, the act is grave. Now it might be that one does not fully and freely choose it but the act is grave itself. So I suppose maybe theoretically it could in some circumstances not be mortal but that is not because the act isn't a grave act. Again, perhaps look into the catechism or Ascension Presents KZbin channel for better answers.

It is when used in conjunction with any persons of the Holy Trinity. Profane words in and of themselves are still sinful, not quite mortal, but it is certainly a gateway to committing false oaths and perjury through the disordered use of speech, which does break the first and second commandments. In other words, it is best to avoid them and to order our speech in all ways to things Holy and for the edification of souls. Disordered speech will lead to habitual and desensitization to sin, and could lead a person to mortal sinfulness.

@@Wgaither1 bottom line is the soul that dies in unrepentant mortal sin will not even have the option to be purified in purgatory. Dying in a state of mortal sin is condemnable to hell and only God knows what the ultimate judgment will be. Judgment and punishment is God’s alone, and there is much more to consider from a person’s life than just a life of swearing or missing Mass without reason. No one knows what the ultimate result of that soul will be in purgatory. Our purpose in our earthly life is to gear our souls more towards heaven everyday and less to towards the world, in every aspect and with every fiber of our being

Yet the only ones that strictly apply to vulgarity (once we factor in the context) are the first three - Colossians 3:8, Ephesians 4:29 and Ephesians 5:4 . These verses _did_ give me pause about this kind of language as I read them, and one shouldn't take St. Paul's words lightly as they're inspired - but we shouldn't also ignore the historical context, nor the pastoral nature of these Epistles, which were written to address particular issues in those two communities (remember, for instance, the mention of the Jerusalem donations in 1-2 Corinthians - a particular historical occurrence, which we can link with the need for intercommunal charity). Indeed, just like many modern critics, _prima facie_ one could read Paul's letters and denounce him as sexist and pusillanimous towards slavery, _if_ one doesn't take these historical factors in as well as the theological message.
