Hello doctor i would like to know what are the exercises that i should avoid while swiming and what exercises are recommended for scoliosis

I have a swimmer, who got injured because of gymnastics, "no offense meant to gymnast", my question is, can I get some advice for improving her condition? I can shoot a video of her swimming, and can you give some advice if what we are doing will positively or negatively affect her, thanks in advance, I am asking this, because I had several students who suffered back injuries, and their doctors advice them to swim, and for us coaches, or for me alone, I have an idea, but not the whole knowledge on what can and what we shouldnt do, thanks again

In general, is there one type of swim stroke that is better than the other? I think the backstroke would have the least negative effect on the back.

Hello sir, Can scoliosis cause asymmetry in whole body including face, head, eyes, thighs, hips and waist etc. Since 2 years I had been noticing rapid change in my face where the right side of the face including cheekbone, browbone, jawline etc started reducing and going inwards and the left side of the face including head started bulging towards outward. Similarly my left butt has almost doubled in size as compared to the right one and the same goes with size of thighs and waist. Ribs of left side has also come out wards and I can also clearly feel kind of rotation in the spinal structure. Recently I went to doc where they said that I have scoliosis but they didn’t recommend anything accept the Spine extension exercises. My body and facial shape is changing rapidly but doctors aren’t suggesting anything as the cure. I request you to help me out . I shall be highly grateful to you for life.

I have scoliosis..had since a child and like myself Dr's have told me don't worry about it now. That was back then. Why do Dr's say that?! knowing full hand what it can do later in life for that person? LOT'S OF DAMAGE THAT CAN'T BE REVERSED OR STOP PROGRESSION !! for that person. Well I take that back..Progression has stopped. Lol I'm in gravataing stage at this point im pretty sure of it. And that's not good either. Right Dr? That's where I am at thus point and time. Hell I can't find a Dr around here that will touch me right now cause I can't find one ! Simple as that There's not a day goes by since my father passed on March 12th 22 .. he's BDay was the 2nd of march .that I don't think about him and his life on this earth. Which I'm grateful that my situation is lol different but he was left PARALIZED from waist down in a hunting accident in 1970. He was 78 when he died. Natural causes took my inspiration from me. He was my inspiration cause Dr's told him he'd never walk again for the rest of his life.( NO!!. WALK..SITUP..DRIVING..WORK.. HUNT..PLAY WITH YOUR TWO YOUNG CHILDREN OUTSIDE!! lil brother and myself had not seen our dad in 6months from that dreadful day. Until he WALKED out of the next room. I'll will remember that day till the day I die. And YES ! MY FATHER did all...EVERY LAST ONE of the thing's the Dr's said he wasn't going to beable to do again. Amen I need a Dr like you doc ..col (cry out loud)cause these horse kicks I keep getting in my back is PARALYZING!! NOT TO MENTION THE CHEST LUNG AREA THAT HAS A ELEPHANT SITTING ON IT WHEN I COME TO LY DOWN . I EMEDITLY START TO COUGH. AND SHORT OF BREATH. ARE THERE ANY DR'S OR CLINICS IN LOUISIANA THAT YOU KNOW OF !! OR CAN YOU REFER ME TO THE NEXT BEST OF YOUR VERSION ? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE I WILL GREATLY APPRECIATE YOU !! Consider wearing a night guard for your teeth while swimming. If you have the feeling your face is being influenced by scoliosis your jaw occlusion is probably off, and in subsequence head joint and upper spine probably translate some unwanted movement up and down your spine and body from there. Focus on form - understanding your whole individual scoliosis is key. If your neck head joint has problems you probably also have assymetrical pelvic tilt since the sacrum is like the lower mirror pole to the skull. If your torso is twisted you might have assymetrical movements rotating and twisting up the spine and your habitual movements in arms and legs might initiate wrong movement in spine since shoulder girdle and hips might be off as well and excert assymetric force on your middle line. But getting a night guard for your teeth to better coordinate head movement during sports could be something that helps you besides professional therapy/exercise outside the water and learning to understand you individual scoliosis. Do yoga and exercises that are tailor made for you to balance out swimming and take what you learn on land to switch up swimming techniques. Consider getting treatment for dental maloccluaion. Physical therapy for tmj disfunction might help as well!! Look into "mewing" for tongue position as well but only do it once you understand your head and jaw position better since tongue position and deep frontal neck musculature are pivitol for coordinating your neck out of your habitual posture.

Chemical Toxicity Some types of chemicals appear to influence the prevalence of scoliosis. The chlorine in indoor swimming pools as well as the additives in meat have been found to increase the rate at which scoliosis develops. Additional ongoing research suggests that certain heavy metals such as mercury may also have a negative effect upon the ligaments, weakening them and encouraging the development of scoliosis.

Not aware of any scientific evidence to suggest that chlorine exposure is harmful to individuals with scoliosis. However, exposure to chlorine in swimming pools or hot tubs can cause skin irritation, dryness, and itching for some people, especially if they have sensitive skin. For people with scoliosis, it's important to maintain good posture and practice proper body mechanics, particularly when engaging in activities such as swimming. This can help to reduce the strain on the spine and prevent further progression of the condition.
