I think it links back to the first season where Jamie mentions that he had a picture of Roy on his wall as a kid. It’s sort of implied that Jamie saw Roy as a father figure given how much of a shit his real dad is

I still think it would have been more emotional if SAM hugged Jamie, since he was actually bullied by Jamie. Roy wasn't really "bullied" by Jamie because of their dynamics on the team. ie Roy was th older more experienced player and in a bigger power position.

@@Wizardofgosz Jamie and Roy had a lot more tension between them than Sam and Jamie did, even with Jamie treating Sam and the others awful prior to coming back to Richmond. Plus, as James Morley said, Jamie looks up to Roy despite their differences -- it makes a lot more sense narratively that the hug would come from him.

I wondered why Nate randomly brought up Ted's son while going off at him, and I'm thinking that on top of all his other insecurities and power tripping Nate is probably extremely jealous and resentful of Ted's unconditional affection and support of his son, which Nate has seemingly never got from his own dad. Ted is half a world away from his son and has still made such an effort to be a constant supporting presence in his life, meanwhile while Nate literally lives in the same house as his dad but barely gets any acknowledgment at all.

I love that Trent Crimm ratted himself out for blowing a source. I remember when I watched the end of episode 11, I kind of thought it was hypocritical that Trent "had to write the story as a journalist" but then immediately blew his source, breaking the golden rule of journalism... but this confirmed what I thought, Trent is a real one. He wrote that article because it was his job, then realized his job meant not telling Ted, who he respects, his supposed friend Nate was really an asshole, so he tells Ted and then reports himself, knowing it will be the end of his job, because that job isn't something he finds fulfilling anymore anyways.

I personally I felt Nick Mohammed (Nate) should have won the Emmy instead of Bret Goldstein (Roy Kent), because he is doing the most difficult acting of any actor on the show and nailing it. He has turned a character that was a light comic relief to one of the most hated characters on TV this year. He is the show's Joffery of the show and the fact everyone hates him shows he is doing an incredible acting job.

Yeah hype him and his tweet up all you guys want but his character, and acting, went to absolute shite way too fast, way too out of nowhere. Explanation =/= justification. Jason Sudeikis is a beast in the second season. Every single scene of his with Dr. Sharon was amazing. Especially the scene where he reads her letter. I love how we don't learn what the letter says and instead watch Ted's reaction to it. The "you spelled favorite wrong" joke is genius and then it becomes very emotional. That gradual change on Jason's face as he continues to read is perfect. Really well done, acting, directing and writing wise.

The beard episode is clearly based on Martin Scorsese's film "After Hours". In which all sorts of strange things happen to the protagonist during the course of a bad night in NY. And the shot where Jaime's father appears with his friends in the tunnel with that backlight, is a clear homage shot to the droogs of "A Clockwork Orange"...

Glad we got this episode, because this and the Christmas episode are only a thing because Apple asked for 12 episodes when Jason and the writers had 10.. so they had to create two self-contained episodes, which is why they feel a little out of place.

Did having a father like that also include high anxiety later in life? Thats what I am dealing with. My father was like that too. Which, in turn, when I became a father I realized that I had a quick temper. My wife begged me to get into therapy and, as it turns out, a quick temper is usually associated with anxiety and depression. In men it often manifests as irritability and quick temper. Its a cycle that starts in childhood. So chances are your grandfather was the same way. Its not until we learn and grow to break that cycle for our kids that we can do better.

I was visiting a friend via train and mis-read the timetable, by the time I got back to his house he had gone to his girlfriend’s and I had no way to contact him. It was one of the worst experiences ever and topped off by my going to the pictures that night, opening my jelly babies and have bag completely split and have them go everywhere. I watched a video on the 'downfall of Nate' and learned that I missed a bunch of things that showed that Nate has always been the way he is, it just wasn't until he became a coach and got a little power that it really started to show. The very first time we meet Nate he's scolding/yelling at Ted and Beard to get off the grass and doesn't become meek until he finds out who they are. Nate's pre-game speech is a roast, showing that that's how he thinks of them (watch that scene again after watching season 2, it feels completely different). There are a few other things here and there that I can't remember offhand. I think the more interesting conversation is do you think he can be redeemed by the end of season 3? Personally I'd like to see him suck all the way til the very last episode, richmond wins against them and he learns a lesson that way and becomes at least slightly redeemed.

Nate's character actually is a very realistic portrayal of someone who's been bullied for a long time and becomes insecure and lash out as a consequence. Insecurity is not something you can be rid of on demand, Nate honestly has the most realistic character progression out of anyone on the show, it's kind of alarming that everyone has this predetermined way of how Nate should behave now, simply because there are finally some nice people in his life now, without considering the lingering effect of his past that are still on him.

@xy c The lashing out is very accurate and sadly I know from experience. I think for Nate it’s even more galling because he has talent and brains but in spite of that people see him neither as someone to be respected or reckoned with. Also his Dad is an absolute piece o crap. He thinks he’s keeping his son grounded but his apathetic disinterest is so destructive that now the kindness he’s been shown by Ted and everyone at Richmond has had the effect of poisoning him. What I love about this show is that its both comedic and dramatic... and often times the heavy drama parts then make the laughs hit so much harder, just as a catharsis. Like in Episode 10 here, after Ted has finished pouring his heart out about his dad, and that life is real hard sometimes, when they then hit you with that "Are you gonna charge me for this session?" joke, it gets a huge laugh, because it feels good to laugh after having just felt such raw emotions with Ted. Its top notice story telling, and takes both a great writer and a great comedian to pull it off.

Nate always felt like he was being taken advantage of and he also thought that no one saw him as a threat or gave him any respect. Nate was so inside his own head and lost site of people actually caring for him. Example of Ted still having that photo he got in his own home instead of his office because it meant a lot more to him than to just sit in the office. Nate didn't see it in his office anymore and jumped to conclusions that he just got rid of it. Roy got mad when Jamie told him about telling Keeley he still loved her, but Roy just brushes off Nate when he says he kissed her seeing him not as a threat. He was in the constant mental state of always feeling disrespected. There are a lot of examples of these things with Nate through the show, but those are just two close to the end that pushed him over the edge. Can't wait for season 3! I think the character arcs are well done and I enjoy getting a glimpse into others. The show is so well-written. Edit: I teared up so many times watching the show. It had a lot of little powerful moments.

@@keithanderson1980 Yeah, if Nate would have actually talked it out with the Diamond Dogs as an example instead of sulking and keeping everything to himself, he would have been in a better place mentally. He would would tell people how he felt and they could figure out a plan. I think the only ones that knew about his dad and what he thought of him were Keeley, Rebecca and Higgins when they gave him advice on how to feel big. Also Nate hates himself .... He spits on himself in the mirror because he is disgusted at what he sees.

@@TheDaringPastry1313 2 things about nate. 1 I can kinda understand how he felt/ what he meant when he said ted made him feel like the most important person because it was kinda like a father showering his son with love and affection when he's little and lessens it and changes it when he grows up and becomes independent. Nate was emotionally and socially still a kid and didn't know that change was a good thing. 2 I love how the actor playing nate had a little white in it and the director was like "let's make it get whiter and whiter to help symbolize his change" I hope he wasn't self conscious about it.

At the time I was surprised how quickly in the second session Ted went into anger mode, but now that we know his Dad killed himself, or as Ted put it "He quit." it makes a lot of sense that after that comment Ted was easy to piss off in that session.

A few thoughts... If one writer told another writer, "I dare you to write a totally sympathetic and lovable character, then make him absolutely HATED" they'd come up with Nate. Tearing up the BELIEVE sign hurt me more than anything else in this show. If the gender roles of Rebecca and Sam were reversed, and a bunch of middle aged men (and a BOY) were hooting and congratulating one of them over an affair with a much younger woman who's a subordinate at work, it would be SUPER icky. Great show. Thanks Nat!
@ShredPenguins
@ShredPenguins 3 жыл бұрын
It's not really an affair though, but yes I could see a lot of people seeing it as icky despite it not being so. At no point in the build up of their relationship was either aware of the power dynamic between them, the chemistry built naturally. I'd hope in a similar situation with men it would feel the same, but in today's society you are probably right many people would be offended by it (when they most certainly shouldn't).

Haven't connected with a TV show like i did with this one in years, it had me laughing out loud one minute and in bits the next. The writers deserve an award for the service they did to Roy Kent in this series. At this point I'd watch a spin-off show of that character. I know he's supposed to be an exaggerated version of Roy Keane, but he's comedy gold!

I read that after they had outlined the entire second season, it was decided to add more episodes. Rather than change everything they’d laid out, they added stand-alone episodes that wouldn’t effect the overall story - the Christmas episode & the Beard episode. Also, I really hope he changes his mind, but Jason Sudekis said he envisioned Ted Lasso having only 3 seasons. I love it so much it would break my heart if this ends up being the case, but if it is, you’re already 2/3rds through it. One thing to point out to those not from the UK is that a lot of the pundits in the show are actual real life football pundits from British TV. The host of the show that Roy was on is Jeff Stelling who has been the host of Soccer Saturday on Sky TV for decades alongside Chris Kamara who is a genuine former top division footballer and one of Roy's fellow pundits. In Beard's episode he is haunted by visions of Thierry Henry and Gary Lineker who are both genuine football legends for France and England respectively. Lineker is currently the face of football coverage on the BBC and Henry has also contributed to BBC coverage mainly during big international competitions like the World Cup. One great story about Lineker happened a few years ago. His hometown club Leicester City were doing shockingly well in the Premier League and unexpectedly were at the top of the table about halfway through the season. Everyone expected Leicester's run to drop off and one of the big teams like Manchester City or Liverpool to overtake them at the top. With that in mind Lineker joked on the highlights program "Match of the Day" that if Leicester won the title he would present Match of the Day in his underwear. Against all the odds (5000-1 at the bookmakers for a Leicester title win before the season started) Leicester did indeed go on to win the title in one of the most extraordinary upsets in sporting history. Millions tuned into the first episode of "Match of the Day" the following season to see whether Lineker would make good on his promise. The intro credits rolled, the famous title music played, and then the "Match of the Day" studio and Lineker appeared... ...wearing nothing but a pair of Leicester City branded boxer shorts. Lineker went on to present highlights of the first match in said shorts, much to the amused delight of his co hosts and then put clothes on for the rest of the episode his promise fulfilled.

I'm a little late but I can try to give a quick soccer run down (that and I like to nerd out a little). You have the league competitions and cup competitions. Leagues run roughly Sept-May, every game you're playing for points to add up to be the best at the end of May. A win = 3 points, a tie = 1 and a loss = 0. That's why during league play, ties happen because you play 90 minutes and that's it, add all the points to the end of the season and best points obviously means champions while worst 3 teams = Relegation, and in the lower leagues (everything below the Premier League) the top 3 teams get promoted 1 league up (in this case, Richmond fought to get back into the Premier League from the Championship League). Also, every team plays each other twice - one home and one away - leading to roughly 32 games a season. During the same time, there are also cup competitions (in this series/England, the FA Cup). Teams from all the different leagues (this includes amateurs/part-timers) play each other in the traditional win-lose format (this is the competition Manchester City destroyed Richmond in). It has no effect on the League competition. League games = Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, while cup games (except for semis and finals) are more like Tuesday or Wednesday. So during a season, a team has at least 2 chances to win silverware (a trophy).

Also you may not have room to keep a full-size bike in a London flat/house-share etc. Famously ridden by Moritz Volz back in the day. That combined with the whole Sam/Rebecca dynamic (Peschisolido/Brady) makes me wonder if there’s a Fulham fan on the writing team. Edit - they stick it Brentford in the last game? Just gonna give you a quick rundown of the English Football system: There’s 4 main divisions: Premier League > Championship > League One > League Two. Alongside the league they play in 2 knockout cup competitions, The FA Cup & The Carabao Cup. These have no influence on the league standings. (The semi-final was in The FA Cup) The cups include teams from all 4 leagues which is why they were playing Manchester City from the Premier League. At the end of the season the bottom 3 teams from the Premier League are relegated. The top 2 teams from the Championship are promoted and the next four teams have play-offs to see who gets the 3rd promotion spot. Then the bottom 3 are relegated to League One. It’s a similar system all the way down for over 100 leagues going down to amateur level. Anything lower than League Two is known as ‘non-league’ Then there’s European competitions which I think we’ll see in Season 4 as they haven’t tackled them yet or qualified for Season 3: The Champions League is a cup competition including all the top teams in all the European leagues. The top 4 teams in the Premier League are included. The Europa League is a step below The Champions League and includes the best teams that didn’t make the Champions League. 5th place in the Premier League & The FA Cup winners qualify. The winners of this qualify for the Champions League regardless of their league position. There’s then The Europa Conference League which is a step below The Europa League but no one really cares about it tbh
