Is TEMU the real problem here?

What is the cost of cheap art and craft supplies? Why are some people admonishing the site and others shopping like "billionaires?" Is it really any different than shopping on Amazon, Walmart, Target, or anywhere else that sells goods made in China? After hearing concerns about products created with forced labor and child labor out of China I did some research on the US Department of Labor website where they list suspected products from all regions of the world made by forced (slave/prison) labor and child labor. Suspected products from China made by forced labor are Artificial Flowers, Christmas Decorations, Coal, Fish, footwear, Garments, Gloves, Hair Products, Polysilicon, Nails, Thread/Yarn, and Tomato Products. Probable child labor products are Bricks, Cotton, Electronics, Fireworks, Textiles, Toys. That's why we hear so much about sweatshops in the fashion industry because from picking cotton to making fabric and then sewing garments it is heavily reliant on human labor and they need cheap labor for the low prices. But don't think because you buy brand-name clothing from American stores you are fine, Nike is on the list of sweatshop-using brands along with 80 other famous brands. So as crafters, we should probably avoid purchasing Silk flowers, Christmas decorations, yarn, thread, and fabric made in China. As I suspected the paint and colored pencil manufacturing is more automated and not reliant on massive amounts of labor. It was good to have it confirmed tho. Don't take my word for it. Research it for yourself. You might be surprised how your food is harvested, where your clothes come from, and the true cost of your iPhone. It's a hard pill to swallow but the more we know the better we can do. Thank you for this info Lindsey. I have a habit of immediately turning off ads & temo is so adamantly obnoxious that I generally end up clicking the X to get out of any article I’m trying to read because their ads quickly cover up everything I’m trying to read!! I feel like it’s primal scream time when it comes to ads like theirs. And they’re everywhere. It’s getting to the point that I may actually have to pay whatever Robokiller is charging a month to escape this increasing onslaught of garbage on my screen! I knew about the problem with temu & the forced/slave labor & I had serious concerns about them stealing my info as well not to mention the old adage that I grew up with “You get what you pay for”. Something people may want to keep in mind when shopping these sites. Just sayin’ !

Then you add in animal abuse into the mix, an example is make-up testing. Children and animals are so innocent and dependent on others. Your info is invaluable as is the list of cruelty free produced good on Leaping Bunny site. Thank you for your research.

Lindsay, just to let you know, Joe Miller, founder of Cheap Joe’s Art Supplies, just passed away. He was the pharmacist in the town where I grew up. As I got older, I watched his pharmacy become less pharmacy and more of an art supply store until he opened Cheap Joe’s. Wonderful man!

Hello Lindsay. I was offered a paid for collaboration with Temu. They were very strict about how the content and information in the description box should be presented. Hours went into producing the two videos I prepared for them. (There is a disclaimer in my video informing my viewers it was a paid for collaboration). To this date I have not received a penny in payment despite contacting my representative numerous times. I have to say I am happy with the products I received, but I will never deal with or purchase from Temu again as all trust has gone.

When I try to inform or warn content creators about this company, they delete my comment. Clearly they are making money and don't want the truth out there. I watched a video about the history of the company and their motives on the China Uncensored channel recently and it really laid it all out. If you're the kind of person with high ethics and morals, it's difficult to buy from them in good conscience

In the beginning I tried to inform Influencers that Like Lindsay did not need to get caught up in Information gathering amongst other nefarious stuff they do and to promote that crap. My theory about Temu is that the platform allows them to eliminate several middle men between Chinese manufacturers and the Western marketplace. Think about it--there are importer/exporters, distributers, retailers all between the manufacturer and consumer. My guess is that Temu takes a much smaller cut than Western retailers, allowing manufacturers to sell very nearly direct to consumers. I used to be a buyer for a small locally-owned greenhouse in the midwest. Because we were so small and buying in such small lots, we were stuck buying our stock from overpriced distributers--and then we had to double the price WE had paid for the goods and hope it would sell to loyal customers who just wanted to buy locally from a place they trusted (the standard retail markup is 100% because of overhead). My guess is that in every step along the chain from manufacturer to consumer, there are usually several steps along the line where the price is doubled. THAT is how Temu can sell stuff so cheaply. We all know that Chinese factory workers are underpaid. They are probably dangerous places to work. And under those conditions, they can churn out a lot of product for cheap. The real question isn't Temu or no-Temu. It's buying products made in China or not. If you buy the same cheap product from Amazon or Target or Walmart you're still supporting the same paradigm--you're just paying more. And in many cases it can't be avoided. Sometimes it's impossible to tell if something is made ethically or not. I'm sure there are good manufacturers in China-- just as sure as I am that there are bad ones here in the West. And perhaps some companies push for good practices while other ignore how their products are made and only concentrate on the bottom line. The problem is--it's nearly impossible for us to know when we buy a crochet hook or a marker or a pad of paper--what were the conditions like in the factory that made it. It is hypocritical, in my opinion, to criticize someone buying goods from Temu, but then buying something made in the very same factory from Walmart, Target, or Amazon. A bigger problem with Temu is that the products aren't well-described. And even bigger--the bald-faced push to buy-buy-buy. I would be surprised if there aren't people addicted to buying on that platform. They know what they are doing.

I’ve looked at Temu, thought, no, I mustn’t support these companies, then see exactly the same product, down to packaging etc on Amazon at triple the price. I really think you’ve got a point there !! 🥰🥰 at the end of the day everyone has different depth pockets, do we criticise someone for shopping at Lidl as opposed to M & S (sorry I’m in the UK, I’m not sure of your comparisons, but I’m sure you can get the drift) my problem is, so I’ve heard, our government supplements the Chinese to send products with no shipping charges, as they are classed as a third world country 🙈🙈 REALLY ???

I now see many items on Amazon that I’ve seen on Temu using the exact same photos! Buying on Amazon lately is no different from buying from Temu, you are just paying more via a third party! This is about more than the price we pay, if anyone wants to buy sustainably or ethically, knowing workers are paid a living wage, the answer is simple, don’t buy anything “Made in China”.

Not every factory in China has the same ethics, and reputable companies research this. I used to be a purchasing agent and we met with reps. Big big reps, Binney & Smith, Winsor & Newton, Liquitex etc. Some buyers ask hard questions because they care about where things come from others don't and are concerned only with profit. America decided long ago they didn't care about morals or anything else all they wanted was a good price. Now you have uneducated inexperienced people who only stock shelves in stores, experienced sales people no longer exist nor do morals. You should try selling things at artists shows and having people compare your goods to mass-produced crap from China. It's abhorrent and so are people!! Quality is an antiquated word sadly. 90% of the crap people buy off those sites will be in a landfill in less than 5 years... that's the truly sad part.

Bottom line for me is what can I afford? I've been buying from Temu lately and have no issues with either the quality of their items or their customer service. Sure. I like Stampin' Up, Altenew, Tim Holtz, and lots of other name brand name products sold online. But, I'm trying to indulge my artistic, creative nature without going over my budget. I'm 76, retired, on a fixed income. Creating cards for family and friends, experimenting with mixed media, and watercoloring, are what I get joy from. When I see $50 price tags on stamp and die sets, or just stamps alone, or dies alone for $25, I know they're out of my budget. And that's before shipping charges which add $7 to $11 on average. It makes me sad to not buy what I can envision using for a new project I've planned in my imagination. When I see $50 items on Temu, selling for under $5, with free shipping, I get angry. I'm being forced to choose between supporting US businesses over buying what I want at a price I can afford... especially when almost all of those US businesses have their products made in China anyway. Those companies are not supporting US manufacturers and US workers. For those big brand companies it's a matter of profitability. All companies need to make a profit to stay in business. The lower their costs the more money they make, so they turn to China for their production. I'm sure they're paying Temu prices or less for their products, then spend money on promotion, pay their designers, and cover all other overhead. They sell their items at exorbitant prices to cover that overhead, passing that cost on to consumers. I think their markups are over the top, though. I'd be willing to pay more for US made products knowing I'm at least supporting the US's economy, not China's. So, if I buy from a US company who contracts with a foreign manufacturer, and I'm supporting that economy anyway, I'm going to buy directly from the foreign suppliers and cut out the Chinese-supporting middleman and save money. It makes me feel like a traitor of sorts, but it's a situation I'm being forced into if I want to keep up with the hobbies that mean so much to me. At 76, I don't have a whole lot of years left, and I want to spend those years doing the crafts that give me joy. If buying from Temu or AliExpress let's me do that, so be it.

That's what gets me, too. The VAST majority of craft supplies are MADE IN CHINA!! I wish we made our own stuff, but why don't we? The big dogs won't make as much money, pure and simple. Jobs for US citizens if we made our own?? WHAT A CONCEPT!

I am 73 and retired and a stamper and journaler. All my friends have either gone south or just gone permanently. Crafting is my fun place for whatever time I have left. I agree with what you say. I recently paid 25 dollars for stencils (it's a set that makes 1 flower) way too much. I want to buy USA but something has to give. A sale, free shipping, reduced price closeouts. I buy temu, aliexpress once in a while but not often. Mostly I try to use what I have and now and then buy name brands. Between the excessive shipping prices, and no known return policy's and Amazon pushing belong to prime for $$$ it takes joy out of a hobby.

Fran, you have quite succinctly stated all of the factors that I would have said myself that leave me to make the purchasing decisions that I have made as of late. Having just celebrated my 67th birthday, it was my intent that when I began my watercolor journey as well as creating lovely cards to share with family, friends, my church groups, our local friendly kitchen, local nursing homes and anyplace else that I thought might be in need of a bit of sunshine in their day.... that I could look forward to many happy years of doing something that gave me so much joy. As life would have it, things aren't always as we expect them to be. Unfortunately, my health has taken a turn for the worse. It is time for me to speed up my watercolor journey and rather than leisurely painting once a day, I shall be painting twice or perhaps even thrice a day. It is still my intent to grasp as much joy as the powers that be choose to bless and bestow me with. But, it is quite apparent that I had better make the very best use of each and every day in this coming year. Should I find myself in need of any additional art supplies, particularly 100% cotton paper (most likely Baohung) or the boxes of watercolor cards with their envelopes, you can bet your bottom dollar that I will be ordering them from either Temu or Amazon. I am disabled and live alone on a fixed income. My budget is as tight as my grandmother's Playtex girdle. Such is life. Having said that, I couldn't agree with Lindsay more. She is brilliant and has my endless admiration. You go girl! I use Temu for everything except the ink pads and will continue to do so. I'm 68, retired, live on a fixed budget. I was my parent's caregiver and both passed within 2 years. I took up cardmaking at the end of May and it's my happy place. One of my daughters gifted me the Ohuhu alcohol markers, which I couldn't afford and the Copic markers are way out of my league. I am me and my circumstances, so I need to watch my pennies.

My 3 girls and my grandchildren live in the States. I'm back in Puerto Rico when I decided to come care for mom and dad and craft supplies down here are rare. So I have to use the internet for my supplies. And I can't bring myself to pay $15 $20 or more for an embossing folder or stamp sets w/o the dies. So I'm grateful cardmaking has pulled me out of my depression and makes me feel the exhilaration I feel when creating. I donate them to my church and to Senior homes. It makes me happy, happy, happy!

This was exactly my thoughts from the beginning. I've shopped at dollar tree a majority of my life because it's what fits my small budget to find at least a small amount of happiness. Dollar tree is just as bad as temu in the sense, and so are many other stores. Why are we shaming people for having a budget, especially when many of the items are the same item on other sites like Amazon. Aliexpress/Alibaba and wish are also similar; wish was huge online.

I have talked with others regarding Temu and they are very anti-Temu. Which is fine we all make our own choices. But what gets me is they will use Amazon to purchase the same thing, coming from the same company but pay three times the amount. What’s the difference other than price, nothing. I have purchased some things from Temu and have been really happy with the items, stickers, junk journal supplies. I’m more confident in using Temu than Wish, aliexpress, and Shein.

Agree. I thought the same. It’s very trendy to attack Temu but it’s the same products sold on Amazon (from the same companies) & Amazon has a documented history of serious issues (like millions in tax evasion). But Amazon is easy, everyone shops there, and then there’s the Affiliate program, so nobody says a word. I appreciate the non-judginess in this video.

The difference for me is the same as for Lindsay. I don't want to put my credit card info out on a questionable website. Not to say that Amazon hasn't done anything shady. But I do believe my credit card info is safe on the site. And also, there are no safety standards for anything you're buying directly from China. Like Lindsay says in the video, when we import items, they are still subject to safety standards and customs inspection. And if a company sells them here, they can be sued for safety issues. So, at least in my mind, it feels a little safer to buy things from an American store even if it is imported. I hate the copyright infringement from all of them (overseas, Amazon etc) but I do realize it will happen. I just report as I see it, but I don't go seeking it out. It would drive me crazy. but I think it's wrong to buy something, especially something I don't NEED (just crafting items), just because it is cheaper if I know the design is stolen. It feels wrong to participate in that. I try not to judge other people for doing that. You do you. I just don't want to.

You know you can use paypal with temu so your not giving them your direct credit card info. If you have a paypal account... Then paypal is your safety net between the company and your card info.....

I'm 84 and on a very fixed budget with all my insurance and utilities increasing at the speed of lightning and in order to be able to do any purchasing for my craft at all have been buying from TEMU since January...keeping price to under 30 USD per purchase and no more than once a month. Sorry about the run on the sentence...anyway...I have had 2 items fall far below standard, but under $5 each item, so I guess that isn't too bad. We all have to do what we have to do. I bought off ALI and Amazon prior to TEMU...so, no idea what the problem might be...more people than I can count buy from these market places. Blessings and happy crafting everyone!

Same here! I kinda use PayPal as my gauge for my purchases. You have that added protection. PayPal doesn’t work with just any site so I feel safe if the site in question offers them as a payment option.

I’ve bought a few things from Temu, but it was two dresses, a pair of Halloween shoes and an shirt with a cat on it. So far everything I have purchased from Temu has been good and I have no complaints. I love to craft and I craft everyday, but I have not bought any craft supplies such as stamps or dies in several years. I don’t even watch videos anymore showing new products because they are really nothing more than an advertisement. Someone who gets a product for free from a company and tries to get me to buy that product at an outrageous price, just makes me mad. So I’m done buying stamps and dies. I have heard from my IT person that putting the Temu app on my phone or iPad is not safe……just like tic-tok. I always love to listen to your informative videos and I love that you do not judge anyone for anything they do.

I have shopped feom temu, and I don't see it any different than shopping at dollar tree, Amazon, (never shopped aliexpress or wish) small edge dies, stamps & stickers. You get a few from dollar tree vs. 50 from temu (numbers are fictitious), but you get the drift. I'm retired & still work 2 jobs, because not old enough to get social security 😂. I try to budget accordingly, because I have a need to eat.

I use PayPal to pay for my Temu orders, so I feel comfortable with that. They have excellent watercolor paper at a great price. I've also gotten some great watercolor brushes.

Me too. Online shopping always comes with certain risk. It just like using your credit card in a foreign country. Temu is not a problem. Everyone shopping online should be aware of the risk and be vigilant, monitoring their credit card bills for any suspicious charges. If you are overly concerned, I suggest you using a professional fraud protection service (many banks offer it for free nowadays).

Sure, as long as you don't have any problems with your order. I was double charged and tried to dispute with my CC company as was recommended to me, and all of the mess ended up freezing my Paypal account, so I've never gotten my money out of that account.

I was just going through some of my unopened/unused stamps. Key word here is “some”. When I look at the space they take up and what I spent, certainly not worth it. Now that I’m retired, I have to listen to my husband asking when I’m going to use all the “crap” I’ve accumulated. He has his own stuff, tools, books, shoes, clothes that he’ll never use again. Thanks for posting this. I won’t use Temu, one because it’s a new company and the prices are scarily low. There also isn’t a way to track exactly where these products are made and there is some suspicion that the Uyghur people taken into internment camps in China may be forced into labor to make many of these products. I also have heard and seen far too many legitimate companies and artists’ intellectual property, designs and product lines stolen and copied. They won’t be getting my patronage.

I think the prices are artificially low (sold below cost) as part of a land-grab. They are buying market share. I'm sure they will settle near Amazon prices once they have acquired as many customers as they can. It's like a black Friday doorbuster, get people in your store so they will also buy other things.

I really appreciate this conversation, and respect everyone's thoughts and opinions surrounding the complexity in buying or avoiding this company. However, I do want to comment on the intellectual property or copying design issue. I have seen US online art/craft company's copy there own vendors designs, yet complained about Wish, Ali, and now Temu!?! For example, when Waffle Flowers came out with the watercoloring media mat, literally 6mos later...Simon "created" their own, as well as many other recreated products. Competition is what it is, but it's the hypocrisy that chaps me the wrong way. I do always try to support small, local, female-owned businesses, but that too comes at a price not always in my budget. But I would challenge anyone to go throughout your entire home to confirm that although you bought said items from a US middleman, the vast majority of said items were manufactured in China. And anything that comes from them, do you really trust what they say they use to make the item? All that said, IMO, people are going to do what's best for their situation...but I will not judge them until will all hold the incessant greedy corporations to the same high minded thinking we are using for Temu.

I recently started using temu, the craft supplies are ridiculously cheep in price and i have no problems with the quality so far, to buy large die cuts for a couple of dollars that actually works is a dream come true.

I do shop Temu, but I pay with PayPal or Apple Pay, so I’m not giving them my card info. They have lots of cute stuff for junk journals- paper products and stickers. And cute everyday pens for writing. I wouldn’t buy anything from them expecting it to be super high quality or professional grade. But for junk journals it’s a good site.

I agree. I buy all my junk journal stuff from TEMU. I don't see these products anywhere else either uness a USA company has started selling the same stuff for 4 times the price (and not any better quality). Just because you bought it in the USA does not mean you are supporting US workers. I have used my Discover credit card for AliExpress and for TEMU. I have never been hacked or stolen from. I watch that card closely. In all the years I have been shopping, it has never happend. But if you are scared of it happening, then using a prepaid card or other method of payment will help you sleep better at night.

If I lived in the US, I would buy more US products, but shipping from US to my country is horrendous. Not all companies have products available here. I rarely buy craft products now due to costs. I use what I have and feel less guilty and am using some stamps that I haven’t used before!

Hi Lindsay! One of the things I love about you and your channel is that you're not just sharing in-depth product reviews or tutorials (which are so helpful!). But you also give us opportunities to reflect, to live life with more intention, to broaden our empathy, and want to be a better person than we were the day before. Thank you for sharing this video. It's definitely giving us a lot of good food for thought. I recently gave Ali Express a try bc I couldn't find a specific brand of oil pastels on Amazon or anywhere else (I'm a little obsessed with oil pastels! 😅). It was Kuelox's artists grade OPs in 3 different 48-piece "mini" sets (cute square shape that reminded me of Holbein's artist grade OPs). I think it was from one of the stationary stores you mentioned. Shipping was fast, and they packaged the boxes really well. What you shared about not judging ppl based on our own situation is spot on. Thank you for reminding us of this truth! I have to admit, I purchased once on Temu, mostly craft items that I found no where else. Some vintage stickers, wax seals and wax, a few art journals, etc. Some things were fine others were junk. I may shop again just for the papers and stickers, maybe. What scares me is I watch the Temu hauls ( they are fun to watch) and I see people buying makeup and clothing and you don't know what goes into those products. Lead and all kinds of contaminants have been found in products coming directly from China. I saw one UTuber in the UK that bought a prisma color set from Temu. She tried to figure out if they were real and wasn't sure after she compared them to the known real set.

Most clothes at target and old navy etc., is also directly from China. I know the factories and they are no different than Shein and Temus, sadly, they just upcharge more . These days I’d advise everyone to buy from brands that you really know where they produce and the conditions. But I think a lot of people, specially my age and younger just want a massive amount of trendy clothes that gets thrown out soon. I rather have good quality staples but my style is not very trendy, more pieces that suit me, not the current trends. I am shocked how many people put their babies and kids in Temu and Shein clothes, since the lead is concerning. I really understand, since you can get organic cotton at places like Kate Quinn for ten dollars per piece for basics and even dresses for 20 and they have sales for 40%off regularly. The impact it has on the environment that all this lead heavy clothing gets discarded constantly is horrible. I wonder though, if papers and craft items have more toxic materials as well, since China doesn’t have the safety standards we are used to. But at least you don’t put that on your skin and body and contact is minimal.

I fell over laughing, there is a Temu ad for ladies sneakers, to the right of your video. And me living in the old fashioned age, I have only brought on line a couple of times. I prefer to purchase local to help keep people employed. I always enjoy your perspective on any subject. Even with a discount code I seriously can't afford most products offered by any market, I must pay my utilities, mortgage, food, insurance etc. Family first is a hard and fast rule in my home, no matter what, come what may.

Thank you so much for your in depth video. I love that you take into account the fact that socioeconomic factors definitely impact one’s ability to take or turn down offers. I occasionally shop on TEMU only bcuz the price of so many things are out of control, making art supply purchases impossible. Really appreciate you talking about this Lindsay! To date, I have received at least *56 (yes FIFTY SIX) emails* from various people claiming to be with TEMU with an offer for sponsorship / collaboration. This just was a huge turn off and sketchy AF. Like you, I got a weird vibe from this and never responded to any of those emails. I've never bought anything from TEMU, but wouldn't judge people who choose to purchase from there or influencers who promote TEMU. It's just very difficult in this day in age to avoid mass produced items overseas, and I understand the average person probably doesn't have the luxury to source products that are 100% ethically made. As far as the TEMU haul videos getting tons of views, I am wondering if TEMU may be taking out ads on these videos? Unless the KZbinr specifically unchecks that option while uploading, *anyone* can run your video as an ad. While I personally shop Amazon a lot, I do not accept free products or do collaborations with Amazon-only storefronts. I do think we should be a bit skeptical about any random company that suddenly pops on the scene marketing to us makers. Several months ago, I had a rather weird experience with the folks behind the Loklik Crafter electronic cutting machine (Cricut knockoff) and decided to look into the company. That's the same company behind HTVRont. What I found out is that they're under a much larger parent company headquartered in "France" but most of the business activity actually appears to be out of China. The parent company just runs dozens of sketchy ecommerce websites and attempts to appeal to certain audiences. EDIT: On a few occasions I accepted free products from Arteza but stopped working with this company because they tried to exert an unreasonable level of control over my content, like asking me to change the titles of videos with specific verbiage.

Yes, the temu people are persistent! I am still getting daily emails from them. I have spent a lot of time on the Department of Labor website, leaning about what products are from what countries are likely to be made with forced or child labor and its heartbreaking. My morning cup of coffee is not tasting as nice. Luckily most of the craft products I used can be sourced from ethical companies in the west and the Chinese ones are automated factories with little labor and none of the products were on the forced/child labor list. Cotton, textiles, thread, and yarn as well as electronics are likely culprits of bad labor practices, so it must be hard to know what to do with a sewing business. Thanks for chiming in. I've enjoyed your coverage of Craftsy and Cricut during their shenanigans. Thanks for shedding some light on that.

I've bought a little novelty watercolour palette from TEMU and a couple of pencil pouches, all of which were good quality. Having said that I don't feel like going back to shop from them. Im not feeling great about fast fashion etc, i feel like we have way too much stuff and I'm feeling a need to declutter and refrain from buying anything that isnt essential!. I haven't completely made up my mind about TEMU, but for now i think im staying clear.

One of my favorite things about your videos aside from your vast art knowledge of lots of different things is your knowledge of how the retail and discount businesses work and how you share that with us. I have absolutely zero knowledge of where things come from and how they get to my door! I’m like the kid that thinks meat comes from the supermarket, what? They kill animals to get it? Just an analogy, grew up on a small farm, but I didn’t take any of the courses in high school or college that explain economy or business. You help me a lot. I have ordered from Temu 3-4 times and I like them but I always spend so much because everything is so cheap and you feel you can’t pass it up! I have seen stamps and dies that look suspiciously like knock offs and I didn’t know how to feel about it. I didn’t go hog wild on those but have bought a few. They seem good quality to me but I don’t think I’ve actually used any of them yet. The clothes I’ve gotten have been a bust for the most part, though they allow returns very easily. The material is weird sometimes and the sizes are all off. I’d advise not to buy clothes there.

I find that some of the older red rubber stamps and other "old" products are better made than some of the newest products. I kept my old rubber stamps, and each time I use them, they are new to me because I can make a modern card with an old stamp. You are right: the die companies burned us out with their redesigned new products that were similar to their old ones but cost more, like 33% higher. They made me run to AliExpress and buy their copies, that, in many cases, were just as good as the brand name ones when I made the comparisons.

I appreciate you raising and promoting values-based, informed consuming. I try to practice my values in every aspect of my life, and what and where I purchase is a HUGE values statement over time. I don't patronise W-Mart, $Tree, fast food etc., for the same reasons you shared. It's worth it to me to pay a little more to know that workers were more closely fairly compensated for the product or service I'm purchasing and I'm especially concerned about access to health insurance for American workers and carbon footprints. I appreciate your non-judgemental posture because everyone is coming from a different place, and it's helpful for influencers to raise ethical consuming so that purchasers begin or continue to consider these issues as we build the local and global communities for the future. Interesting video, I have bought art stuff from Temu, and Ali, I always use PayPal so I’m happy I’m financially protected. I think generally if the price is too good to be true, then I know something isn’t going to be right. I have got some great porcelain palettes (median ones) from Temu, they were lovely, and all my Kalour pencils have been fine. (And much cheaper to the Uk than Amazon) As you mentioned there are some decent sellers mixed in on all of these platforms, it’s just finding the right ones. I don’t buy something that I can see is a design that’s been stolen, but paint/palettes/brushes etc can be ok, and a bit cheaper. 👍🏼

Thank you so much for this video! Shortly after i first started seeing Temu ads, i read an article on Bloomberg News which really turned me off the company. The article claimed that many of the companies selling on Temu use child labor. I now delete any recommended video that is a "Temu art haul". As i have been a watercolorist and colored pencil artist for over 20 years, i have a large supply of materials, so i don't really have "needs", mostly "wants". I buy almost all my art supplies from Blick, Cheap Joes and Jerry's; i rather spend a little more and know i am getting a legitimate product. I rarely use Amazon as some of their practices are suspect.

We all have different opinions and should respect each other and its really ok to disagree and stay in a place of kindness. It doesnt offend me where people choose to shop or not. I’m a senior on a fixed income and a hobby crafter. Stamp sets cost me between $2.00 and $4.00 at Temu. I checked Tim Holz, a set there is $60.00, something I could never afford. Crafting is good for my mental health and helps me deal with severe chronic pain. It’s either buying cheap stuff or not crafting. The stamps work well for me as do other craft supplies. For the few items that didn’t work I received immediate refunds.

Lindsay, thank you so much for having the courage to make videos such as this one. Your honesty and candor is refreshing. I was on the fence about ordering from Temu. I know people who have gotten very cheap mixed media supplies from them; but that very cheap price is what makes me leery. Temu is making their money somewhere/somehow. It might not be by selling dirt cheap products, but it might be by selling people's information or other shady practices (as you mentioned, selling knock offs). And I'm also not judging those who do shop there. EVERYONE is challenged by something - from my six year old nephew who is having a hard time adjusting to school work, to my 71 year old friend who had a stroke, and to everyone in between. Buying from Temu is just night right for me because, even though I have some challenges, being able to support my art supply addictions is not one of them. Love to you and all your followers. 🙂

Interesting and thought provoking video Lindsay. I didn't have a great experience with Temu, so won't be using them again. I think the wider issue we face is rampant consumerism and the need to have stuff. I've seen in a lot of craft groups recently people posting their hauls from various places and it seems to me there is more focus and collecting of the supplies rather than doing the craft. My focus has always been re-use and recycle, and being thrifty, but even I'm not immune to the temptations to get the latest products and colours. Its also getting harder and harder to find KZbinrs that teach and educate rather than promoting products, usually their own.

Hi Lindsay. I appreciate you pointing out that at least some of the paper crafting products from Temu are stolen designs. (I think a long time ago we had the same discussion about Ali.) I'm happy you put that out there so people know who they're dealing with. These products cost less for the reasons you mentioned, and also because the people who should profit or be reimbursed for their development work are cut out of the loop. They have the expense and time of coming up with these things, and then someone else steals the idea and the profit. I have decided I don't need anything they're selling enough to support thievery. You're not telling anyone what to do; I'm just glad you're making people aware.

Thank you for explaining how the affiliate can be cut out on their commission. As to items in other countries rewarding poor labor protections, low wages, no benefits, it is getting more complicated. Many of the raw materials and parts and pieces are manufactured in these countries even if assembled and finished in the USA, as well as many other first world countries. I recently discovered that the drug cartels in Mexico are targeting avocado production for takeover as it is a very profitable business and provides a legal business for money laundering. The cartels also extort legal businesses. There is probably many unsavory practices in the items we purchase , we are just unaware. 😢

I am so at this point right now. I have piles of product I’ve not used. Things that have dried out before I even opened them. I’ve really been trying to reduce and be way more intentional. Be present and thoughtful and not get caught up. When I buy from various companies on Amazon I try to buy from states close to me so there is not such huge fuel waste and buy from small businesses that pay attention to product. I’m just really trying to take a step back from excess. It’s hard because art and crafting are a major psychological support for me and you just grab on to the happy. 😂😂 when I’ve had a stressful day I need to come home and put glitter on something! 😂😂 But there is another reality here that you absolutely nailed. I don’t need everything, all the time, and I can enjoy my art with very little and that’s actually what I do if I look at my patterns like you were describing about using favorites over and over. My main issue with Temu (and I've used them about 8 times) is the packaging. Not only is everything shipped in bags (which means the contents can be broken or damages), the contents are often very dirty. I use a baby wipe to wipe down everything that I take out of the bag. Some items are useful, some a good price, but I won't be purchasing very much more from them. The problem with child labor issues is that WE have no control over that practice. Even Amazon and several retail stores purchase those items for resale to the public - without disclosure of the facts. I would LOVE to see the US bring back manufacturing to North America. However, now that Cali has given fast food and restaurant workers $20/hr, just imagine what the costs would end up being - and that doesn't even begin to consider insurance, supplies, shipping, etc. I also don't eat at fast food restaurants, and now there is even less of a reason to do so. Raising wages raises costs to the consumer = inflation. And more graft.

I just want to say the $30 spent on my paint puck is the best money spent on at supplies in a long time! Amazon had knock-off versions around $12 and I thought about it long and hard then spent the $30. They deserve the rewards for designing such a great product and bringing it to market. I am very suspicious of TEMU. They are selling well below cost so they are gaining some other way. Yes it's a US company but that US-based company is wholly owned by China. Personally I suspect data harvesting for hacking and malware attacks but that's me.

Timely reflections, as always--I love your global thinking on these complex consumer issues we face in the marketplace today. There is rarely a right v wrong answer to how an individual makes buying decisions. Ethically sourcing anything is going to cost you more--that's just the reality now. My slow roll over to made in the US products comes from understanding that when I do so, I'm only going to be buying a few versus many (in my case, hand-made shoes and boots that can be repaired and not tossed). Keep up the great work!

Thanks, Lindsay. I love the way you think. I have found several things and have ordered. No problems. I knew they were from China but seeing they can be out of inventory I figured they were out dated and end of the kind things. I recently stopped buying for security reasons and because I too am an impulse buyer. Being so inexpensive my orders still added up easily. Lots to be aware of before we purchase! There is a KZbin woman who’s channel has computer advice ,reviews and information, she said do not put the TEMU application on your devices, because it is not secure. Ethics are important. I'm leery of pretty much all these companies trying to get an app on my phone. I can't think of a major retailer here that hasn't tried it. The most recent was Target which I've kept at arm's length for a real long time because of how they act with my info. The most annoying lately is that so many stores now have curbside pickup that is absolutely tied to checking in with an app. I tried to do that process one time for one store because I'm trying really hard to reduce the stress of running errands with my kids in tow (not to mention that taking them inside stores I don't always have time and brain space to explain all the marketing that happens inside the stores) and couldn't even get the app to work!!! So I won't do it for any of them now.

It's not just affecting the crafting community. I've been getting cotton watercolor blocks there at unbelievable prices this month. I'm glad you shared this, I'll think about it. I saw that they plagiarized the imagery of Kristy Rice's Art for Joy watercolor sets and it looks like a cheap knockoff.

Stepping in just to say my Cap 1 card has TEMU as an affiliate offering me 3% cash back when I charge on that card. Also, I put in my wrong zip code without noticing it until my order was about to go out. I notified them as soon as I noticed before it was actually sent, and they stopped the shipping and also credited back my card. Their service department was very responsive. Just wanted you to know what my experience has been. 😁

@claudeyaz temu is just a platform that connects manufacturers to customers directly. Temu doesn't sell products but it will warehouse them. Temu makes its money from advertising fees from sellers. It's more like the Etsy business model or Amazon fba 3rd party sellers.

Well, that is an interesting story. They are a UK company and make their regular stock brushed in the UK but what I didn't realize until the brushes came out was that all of the brush sets they make with youtube artists are made in China so I felt very stupid for assuming all of their brushes were made in the UK. The brushes are good, I approved my samples, but I felt bad about it and misled to be honest.

I like getting baohung wc paper and ceramic palettes and blank temu painting tins. I've been happy with those items and they're a lot cheaper in the US. They had cute spinning pencil holders that I use for paintbrushes. AND they've never overcharged me or did anything shady. And returns are free and easy. I've been using them for 2 years now. But like I said, I'm limited in what I buy bc they can be hit or miss sometimes. Still, the price point is amazing. And they've never scammed me and they always accept returns.

I have to agree with you about cost per use. I'm on a fixed budget and I hate shopping like you do, so anything I do purchase I need to seriously think about it. We live in a disposable society so many people will just spend on any "cheap" product because they don't expect to use it more than a couple times. I need things to last as long as possible, especially my painting supplies. I just used Temu for the first time last week (used my niece's account and just gave her the $) bought a pair of sock blockers for $2.48 (I was going to make my own but it would have cost me 3 times more) and 2 skeins of undyed sock yarn for $5.10 (took me over a month to make the decision) for only $8 + free shipping I was willing to try Temu but if it wasn't for my niece already having bought things from them I wouldn't have. Everyone should just be more aware of what and where they spend their $. Thanks for the video have a great day ☺

I am so glad you are discussing this topic, Lindsay. I have a small handful of retailers that I either avoid completely or am very leery of shopping at primarily because of how they treat their workers (in a variety of ways). Those retailers are often hyped greatly by various arts/crafts channels on KZbin. It doesn't make me uncomfortable that other people shop with those retailers because I agree with you that everyone makes their own choices. But I am a bit uncomfortable with the idea that many people perhaps aren't aware of how those retailers treat their employees (and I'm not talking about affiliates here... I'm talking about actual employees). If 50 YTubers create content hyping that retailer, how many are aware of the problematic nature of those shops? If thousands and thousands of people watch those videos and get excited about those 'hauls', how many of them are aware? If the content creators aren't discussing it, then they aren't learning it from them (just stating a fact, not judging the content creators). For any folks that are aware of retailers treat their employees in perhaps problematic ways and can live with it, that's their decision. But if they're not aware, I ponder how we can start that discussion. I have considered and immediately discarded the idea of leaving a comment in a video. That's not the place to start a discussion. So, I've thought for months on this subject and haven't found any way to perhaps further educate people so, whatever decision they make, it's an informed decision. I am so appreciative of you bringing up this subject and making it a easier conversation to have. The goal isn't to stop people from shopping at any retailer or to shame folks for the decisions they might make. The goal is really just to become informed, to allow for an open discussion that doesn't devolve, and consider that idea of cost vs benefit when the cost is born by others and the benefit is ours. Other random thoughts as I listened: [1] tons of hits on videos of TEMU hauls must mean tons of people are watching and interested. or... it means that TEMU is hiring people to drive up stats. It happens in reviews of Amazon products. It happens in other ways on discussion forums. One just has to keep an open mind out for possible deceptive practices like this. [2] theft of intellectual property - why does this not surprise me one bit? If I save 15 bucks by buying counterfeit, I've taken money out of another person's hand. I got the benefit, they paid the cost. [3] If a lower price isn't reflected in a significantly lower quality, where did they cut cost? It can happen in a variety of ways but the most prevalent way (and easiest way for manufacturer) is to save on labor costs. You don't pay your workers as much. You don't pay your workers a living wage. You used forced labor. Those possibilities are concerning. [4] Why create a stink about TEMU and not Amazon? I can't answer directly about TEMU (haven't been party to that discussion) but, in many ways, we should be creating a stink about Amazon. If I'm not creating a stink (that is, I shop Amazon and I don't shop other arguably problematic retailers), it's simply because I have been shopping Amazon since back when it just sold books and it feels more comfortable for me. Feeling more comfortable for me, it's more comfortable for me to 'live with' my concerns about Amazon practices. There's nothing noble about that. It's just the reality of the situation and it may be the case for others, as well. I will say, I try to stay clear of Amazon retailers from China and watch for possible counterfeit products for the same reason I will steer clear of TEMU. final thought: just... thanks again. I feel you were the perfect person to bring up this topic and open the door for further discussion across the community.

And I would use the word 'problematically' vs 'poorly' - and 'problematically' can be a personal assessment. I personally avoid (mostly or completely): Dollar Tree: google > Dollar Tree OSHA safety violations - Time Magazine has a Apr 2023 article on "The Problem With Shopping at Family Dollar and Dollar Tree" Hobby Lobby: due to their political donations and the limits of health care they offer female employees. (this is a political stance and not everyone will agree... I'm cool with that). TEMU: for the reasons you outlined but mostly for (the briefly touched on) allegations of forced labor. Perhaps reference a Jun 2023 article on the BBC: "Temu: Risk popular website sells forced labour goods". As I said, I internally struggle with this thought... do people know? Are their decisions informed? Information is what helps each of us make our own decisions and, like you, I know and accept that those decisions will vary across a spectrum. The topic is tricky because it's not why most of us watch art/craft videos! We're here for the fun. :-) But I do think it's a topic that we need to consider. The question is, how do we have this conversation. Again, I am so appreciative for your thoughts on this and many other matters.

I've bought Boahong watercolour paper twice from TEMU because I'm in the UK and it's outrageously expensive here for multiple reasons and, as it's a Chinese manufactured product anyway, I'd rather buy it from a seller based in China on TEMU than through a third-party seller on Amazon UK who is charging more than triple the actual retail price. But I wouldn't purchase anything else from there and I used PayPal not my credit card so they don't have my direct banking information. I think, as always, you argue a great set of points and I have always appreciated your lack of judgement over what any individual person's circumstances are and why they make the decisions they do. Oh and I refused to sign up for any of their emails, SMS etc so I don't get any marketing garbage from them 😉🤣

I have ordered a few times from Temu and it has always been good quality. Only thing to be aware of is that the photos they use don't always match the quantity so you need to read the description thoroughly. So a box of flat back gems will be say 300 but the photo will show 500 . Any fans of diamond art will find some really nice designs.

I am glad that you have done this video as I have seen many artists, crafters and dollshouse folks raving about Temu. We had them start selling in the UK in May and although I was tempted at the time, I thought that the prices were way too suspicious. I suspect that the company is taking advantage of the fact that people are having a hard time financially and are choosing to buy things from them because it's cheap. Aside from the plagiarism issues (which I am not all that surprised at), I worry about people buying too much from them because it's cheap and then just throwing the stuff away when they 'declutter' or find that that the art materials aren't that great and toss them out. Before I did scrawlrbox, I was very much a cheap art supply person and bought loads of things from shops like the Works and B and M, only to be disappointed with the supplies I bought - the problem was particularly bad with colouring pencils - I don't do that now - I prefer supplies that work. I also hate buying things from China because of the problems they have with violating human rights over there so I try to avoid it as much as I can and their environmental record is appalling, too.

In regards to Amazon, I have noticed problems with third party sellers and I always check them. If they dispatch from Amazon, or is one I have bought from before and trust, I buy. If they don't, then I am more cautious about it.

Great video Lindsay, hope you don't get too much flack😂 I ordered once from Temu after seeing loads of hype (they are everywhere). I am a little ashamed to say I got the paint brush wash pot. I could never afford the genuine price, I'll let you know if it lasts 3 years😊 I know a few KZbinrs who go on about cheap knockoffs damaging stamp companies, but their stuff can be sooo over priced, I guess like fashion it's a 100% mark up from the manufacture. You are so right though about a hard saved purchase meaning more than cheap gratification. AliExpress and Temu both have Baohong hardbound Journals. They're not as pricy as Etchr, for example, but they're pricy enough I've not bought one. On Temu they have rolls of Baohong paper. My next order from there will be that so I can cut pages to make my own little sketchbooks. I'm not a youtube creator, not any kind of affiliate to anything, but just sharing a decent find at a decent price other watercolorists on a budget might want to look into. Have a good evening 🙂

I really enjoyed this video and agree with a lot of what you have said here. My mother is always talking about Temu and like you I am skeptical about how these things can be so cheap and where are they coming from. I trust amazon and i like to shop with them. When it comes to cheap stuff online I’ve always said “somebody’s loosing somewhere”. And that applies to Amazon and Walmart and Temu and Shein and so on and so forth. Whether it’s laborers in the global south, the environment, the customers receiving inferior product that requires frequent replacing, the customers getting their info stolen, or the US tax dollar subsidizing cheap shipping costs and welfare because companies refuse to pay their employees a living wage. The money we might save is being paid for somewhere else by someone else. It always is. But the problem has never been the person on the fixed income buying three or four items with whatever money they have left. It’s the people buying entirely new wardrobes every season, and the $1000 Temu hauls and the clothes that get worn once and the art supplies that get used twice and the garages and spare rooms and storage containers filled with stuff that hasn’t been seen in years much less used. The problem is overconsumption. We need to use less and use what we have. Temu is just the newest cog in the consumerist machine. And the lesson about Temu shouldn’t necessarily be to evaluate where you shop (though most of us could do some good by eliminating a few of the more egregious retailers), but to evaluate what you’re buying, and do you really need it at all? Or do you already have a perfectly good butterfly stamp? Whether you buy it from Temu or from some fair trade ethical retailer, excess is excess. And in the end my biggest beef is gonna be with the retailer, not the buyer. Yes we have a personal responsibility, and we always will, but they’re the ones using all the tricks in the book to get us to buy buy buy, using every loophole to save themselves money, and mistreating their workers to maximize profits. And that’s one of the reasons I’ve always loved your videos, you still test out the new fun stuff and give good reviews so we can make informed purchases and at the same time always remind how if we already have something we probably don’t need this new thing. Whenever some art product is tempting me I always come here to check for a review because you do such a good job laying it all out there and being honest about the product that even when it’s a product you love 9 times out of 10 you’re the one untempting me cause I realize I just don’t need it and I’ve got something else already that’ll do the trick just as well.
