If you decide to rewatch this, pay close attention to Robert Patrick's performance. He never blinks unless he's trying to pass himself off as human in casual conversation, including when he's shooting guns. And he trained himself to sprint without breathing through his mouth. He was so fast, they had to reshoot the scene in the mall parking garage because he kept catching up to John on the dirtbike.

A cool moment people often miss: when the T1000 is flying the helicopter, he has a 3rd hand controlling the joystick, because he can. And as a young teen back then, who didn't try to copy his running syle? :D One of my favourite moments is when Arnie fires the grenade launcher at the nearest police car from the building: just before the car explodes, one can see the sde window get punched out by the grenade. Such a nice touch. It's worth reading the book, lots of interesting extra details, how the T1000 works and so on.

The nuclear blast scene is still considered one of the most accurate depocted on film, meaning recreations and not actual footage. When I saw this movie in the theater when it was first released, someone near me in the theater said "no way, that's not real". Easily one of the best sci-fi-action movies ever! 23:10 In the director's cut is THE essential scene that explains why T-800 is starting to smile, seems to have real feelings for John and finally understands why humans cry. And it's a master's work when it comes to SFX, too! In my opnions, it's a crime they cut it out in the theater version. So, please watch this version for yourself, it's totally worth it! 28:30 Dyson isn't a bad person at all, in fact he wants to make the future safer for humans with his work and got no idea what his invention is turned in. There is another deleted scene where he explains to his wife what his intentions are, which makes his death even more tragic. And yes, Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor is just bad ass!

I agree about the extended cut version of the garage scene after Sarah's breakout. That scene in question not only sets up the Terminator learning so much better than a forgettable line of dialog but also marks an important point in John's development into the leader he's going to be some day. And it makes the bit about "There's a second chip" at the end a callback instead of an out of the blue reveal. Plus, there's the fact that the effects were all done IN CAMERA. It's the kind of thing you can only get away with when your lead Actress happens to have an identical twin. You get to see a little of Linda's sister in the dream sequences in the Theatrical release, but she was used so much better in the cut scene.

Great reaction to an awesome movie! The man taking pictures while looked stunned in the mall is the same character (and actor) who was the police officer that Arnold took the police car from in his pursuit of Kyle and Sarah in the first movie. That's why he looks stunned: he knows who this guy is and he knows the damage and killing he was responsible for the last time he saw him. He's also the source of the current day photos the officers show Sarah in Pescadero. It's not mentioned or referred to in any editions, but it is an Easter Egg that a friend of mine showed me. Robert Patrick trained so hard for this role as the T-1000. Learning to run full speed only breathing through his nose, and he was fast enough a sprinter that he actually caught the dirt bike in the mall parking garage. He was so amazingly intimidating in this movie, as much as or even more so than Arnold, and that's saying something! When the orderly licks Sarah in the hospital, that was apparently one of the catatonia tests done by unethical or sadistic orderlies according to an old friend of mine who had worked in a few psych hospitals, mainly in California, back in the late 70s and early 80s. It wasn't unusual for patients to try to get an advantage by pretending to be catatonic, hoping that the staff would think that they were out of it and not pay much attention so they could try to escape, create havoc, or whatever. Licking someone's face was a mild way of testing, according to my friend. The more standard way of testing among the more brutal orderlies was what was called a cup check, basically hitting the person in the crotch as hard as they could with a broomstick or something like that (the tonfa, shown in the movie, or a billyclub, wasn't standard when he was working in the field, so the evil jerks had to use other items like broomsticks). If they didn't react then they were catatonic. And, sometimes, the catatonic patients needed to be taken to the hospital due to the damage inflicted by whatever the orderly did causing ruptures or internal damage. Apparently one patient lost his testicles as it was several days before it was realized how badly he had been hurt. And, of course, no one ever knew how it happened. “He musta fallen, or done it to himself to try to get out of here.” My friend never missed that job. He told me that some people did things worse than that, but those stories don't need repeating. There are two sets of twins in this movie. One set are the brothers who played the security guard at Pescadero and the T-1000 imitating him. The other set are Linda Hamilton and her twin sister Lesley who played the other Sarah in the sequences like the nightmare where there are two of her are in the same scene. Lesley, a nurse in real life, passed away a few years ago. The was a scene of the T-101 learning to smile which was cut from the theater edition, cos it doesn't add anything of value to the story, but it does lead to a point that amused me once I saw it. After the Terminator's failure copying the young man's smile, the Terminator begins copying John's mannerisms and his one sided half smirk smile. This is best seen in the exchange after he hefts the minigun in Sarah's arms bunker or in the “Trust me.” moment at Cyberdyne. I remember learning that Cameron got a letter from a group of scientists congratulating him for the most realistic depiction of a nuclear detonation in a city in Sarah's nightmare. This horrified him since he was just trying to create the most over the top terrifying image he could, only to discover that it was accurate. Luckily, Sarah stepped back from Terminator mode before killing Dyson, which is good. Killing Dyson wouldn't have changed much of anything anyway. Cyberdyne still would have had the parts, all his notes, and everything they needed to complete the project. Judgment Day would have come, just on a different day other than Michael Jackson's (and my little sister's) birthday. The excellent Joe Morton, who played Dyson, had an accident that punctured one of his lungs when he was younger, so he knew firsthand how Dyson should be breathing/gasping at the end. The extended edition had two advantages over the standard edition. Though it wasn't obvious in its performance, the continuous damage the T-1000 was taking from every shot that hit it and every impact was affecting it. It is most obvious at the scene in the smelting plant after being shattered when, as shown in the theater release, its feet tended to take on the aspect of the flooring as it walked and, in the extended edition, when it grabbed a railing its hand mimicked the paint job on the railing. Also, in the extended edition, at the final scene when Sarah is calling out for John, he looks down and sees that the fake Sarah's feet look like the ironwork that the T-1000 is standing on and he knows for sure which to trust. The extended edition variant ending is also superior (to me) for one more reason: it ends with older Sarah sitting on a playground bench and watching her adult son playing with her granddaughter, meaning that this Terminator movie is absolutely the end of the franchise, and all the movies that steal the name of the series after this are just lame cash grabs and can and should be avoided like the plague, in my opinion.

There are quite a few additional scenes, including one very good, very technically impressive scene that deals with that very topic explicitly, in a way that deepens Sarah and John as characters. Of everything they cut for the theatrical release, it's the scene i most wish hadn't been -- it's a long scene, but SUPER important to the overall character stories being told.

It is also worth mentioning he wasn't just lucky simply being a huge dude to play the role of the terminator, he prepaired for it, because he understood how to approach a character that isn't human by watching Westworld and studying Yul Brynner's performance as an android. The sequel is a goldmine for this character, as they switch the terminator to write mode and let it learn and adopt, and Arnold did a fantastic job to put it on the screen

@@shadowcatreacts I hope since the initial reaction you've been able to see the full version of T2 (known as the T1000 edition), as the extra scenes help numerous things make a lot more sense, especially Sarah's initial mistrust of the T101 and hence why it's such a potent transition for her attitude to change (the full version was releasedon VHS and Laserdisc, I have both, but I'm not sure about modern bluray). Likewise, additional scenes help convey how the T1000 actually works, showing that the more it is severely damaged and has to reform its structure, the harder it is to mimic its surroundings, the freeze-shattering being especially disruptive; after that, the touch-mimic ability begins to malfunction, it can't control it properly, changing colour & form in error when touching things, getting stuck to the floor and other surfaces, etc. It has to do "system checks" which are shown as rippling bands moving up its body. T2 is one of the few movies where I really wish the cinematic release was just the full version right from the start. I'm so glad I was able to see it in the cinema at the time, the effect on the big screen was jaw dropping, it left the audience stunned. I didn't see that kind of reaction again until Jurassic Park. The book btw explains that each viable particle of the liquid metal has a roughly 10 mile recall range, so simply breaking it up and dispersing over a wide area isn't going to work. It also describes the T1000 as operating more like a wolf than a mere machine, ie. highly instinctive, but in a manner driven by efficient logic. Efficient, precise, clinical. It's entire body is a computation engine, every part contributing to the whole, a highly parallel device. I remember this especially when in the building it decides that the best option is to launch out the window on the bike to leap at the helicopter. Btw, while flying the heli, notice that the T1000 has a 3rd hand holding the joystick, because it can. Easy to miss if one is only focusing on its face. Also, one of my favourite moments is when Arnie fires the grenade launcher at the nearest police car from the building: just before the car explodes, one can see the side window get punched out by the grenade. Such a nice touch. And another subtle element: when Sarah is marching towards Miles' house, the theme tune for the Terminator as playing, because that's what she's now become. Lastly, something sadly not referenced in later films: at the end, although Arnie has sacrificed himself in the molten metal, his arm that was torn off earlier is still stuck in the machinery elsewhere in the factory, waiting to be discovered and thus begin the whole cycle all over again.

You were right about Arnold being a specific model. Basically Arnold is a t-800 model 101 with the model 101 referring to the Arnold skin. If they wanted to bring in a different actor to play a t-800 they’d have to call him a different model like model 87 or something. In the terminator there was a different model t-800 infiltrator that showed up in Kyle Reese’s flashback that was played by Arnold’s real life friend Franco Columbu.

In the official Cameron approved Extended Cut of T2, it is implied that the two orderlies looking after Sarah in the state mental hospital had abused their power more than once with her. That's why her beating the crap out of one of them was so much more "enjoyable" in that version.

I am from Finland, but when I was a kid our family lived the US (California) from 1992-1993. At that time T2 themed toys were popular and I got myself a (Arnold) Terminator toy with an arm you can switch, another Arnold Terminator toy, T-1000 toy which you could "break to pieces" by pressing a button and a Terminator motorcycle for Arnold toys that could "shoot" a missile. Cool toys, though I did enjoy even more my TMNT toys.

Interesting how this film loves to have similar beats from the first movie. Obviously, with the lines, and actions, plus being a sequel they had to bring back all the favorite parts from the first film. One I didn't notice and I'm surprised it took me this long to realize the parallel in that in Terminator 1, Arnold gets his left hand blown off with the pipe bomb, in the second movie it's isn't blown up but crushed instead.

In this movie, the theme is that there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. So they avoid judgment day. Most Terminator fans agree that the first 2 films fully complete the Terminator saga. They did enough with the story to wrap it with a beautiful ending. Or as close to a beautiful ending as possible. As you may know, there are several more sequels. The third movie installment is The Rise of the Machines. We learn that judgment day can not be averted. Only postponed. Because Skynet was in cyber space. There is no mainframe to destroy. The war with the machines is inevitable. It's a scary thought. No happy endings. -OG

17:45 - While I'm not excusing what that guy did, I believe he was doing that to "make sure" that Sarah was well medicated, enough so that she wouldn't even respond to such an action. But it's also REALLY satisfying when she knocks the crap out of him a few minutes later. 27:05 - If you want to see a wild depiction of a nuclear war, I recommend the movie "The Day After" from 1983. It was made for TV, and actually helped bring about change to both the US and USSR in relation to nuclear weapons. While they haven't been done away with, the numbers were reduced.

Cameron and Arnold went to a dinner before shooting began and when Linda Hamilton arrived Arnold looked at James Camerom and said" This M F is more cut than I am". 1. Linda Hamilton must have been getting some "Ah-nold time" to get ripped like that 😍🥰 2. I'm guessing that the oven is hot.😱 3. Arnold did many of his own stunts in this movie, including riding the motor cycle. At one point he was injured, and they had to stop production for a couple of weeks so he could recover. 4. Arnold isn't left handed, but what he does with that shotgun is impressive. 😎 5. "I need a vacation." was ad lib and kept in the movie. 6. This is the action movie G O A T.

If I understood the 'canon/lore' correctly the Cyborgs have a model designation for the 'chassis' (the robotic part underneath the skin) and a designation for the 'skin'; In the first movie, and this one the skin model is '101'==the terminator from the 'future flashback' in Kyle's story is another skin model (played by Franco Columbu, another champion body builder and one of Arnie's 'buddies'). As I understand it Skynet created hundreds of skin models, and each 'model' has probably thousands of copies. I think (between the reading materials and the TV series) there are hundreds of chassis already bonded with the skin kept in cold storage waiting for activation.

They definitely had upped the budget. The opening 90 sec sequence alone cost more to make than the entire first Terminator film. At the time it was most expensive movie ever made. And is one of the most important in the history of cinema for special effects and graphics - much of what you see had never been done before and really established the use of CGI in film.

Skynet obviously believes that the future can be changed, otherwise there would be no point in it sending terminators back to try and reverse its defeat. In the original movie, time travel creates a loop in which every event on the loop is caused by other events on the loop so it's self-sustaining. In T2 you need multiple timelines to explain what's going on. The timeline in the opening is one in which Judgement Day happened, the machines took over, and were defeated by the humans led by John Connor. Skynet sends the terminators back to try and shift the world onto a timeline where John Connor didn't exist and the machines won. The protectors are sent back by the humans to, at worst, keep events on the current timeline, and, at best, shift events so the world goes down a timeline on which Judgement Day doesn't happen. The terminators don't vanish because they were created on an alternate timeline, not the one in which they are never created that exists (probably) at the end of the movie. I like to think of the various possible future timelines as a set of parallel train tracks, with the events in the movies switching points so that the train (our present) goes down different tracks.

I didn't get the full trailer spoiler but saw the sequel before the original. I did get surprised the first time. Totally worth it. I haven't seen the others after this one because they came well into the "rehash all the remakes" which repeats in waves. I avoid all remakes if I've seen the original. This one broke the mold for real surprises even if they spoiled it in the trailer. New viewers get the full experience as the director intended. It's also about the last time a sequel was truly better than the original.
