I always thought of Texas as overlapping The South and The West. As a westerner who was born in Chicago, I'm surprisingly okay with that. A lot of elements of Texas Culture is Southwestern/Mexico/Spanish inspired, making it a Western state. And yet, it has a lot in common with the South. I guess Texas is Texas.

Without finishing the video, I can tell you as a native Texan......sure, we're part of the South. We're also part of the Southwest. I've reached a point where if the South wants to accept us, that would be great. We'll be happy to be a part of the South. The culture is great, the weather sucks just like ours, the food is good and it's an overall great place, but we're TEXAS first. And I know some don't like us saying we're Texas first, but we're not overly worried about that. At least we can all agree we don't care how they do it up North. We're not perfect (neither is your state), and our weather pretty much sucks, but we're Texas, and we're proud we're Texas. And if we're not so great, why can't we keep these carpetbagging Calis from coming here? Seriously, somebody, tell us how to legally put a border wall starting at El Paso and going till it hits the Gulf Of Mexico. 🤔🙄

I grew up in East Texas. Tyler, Longview, Marshall, Lufkin, Nacogdoches, Beaumont, etc. is as southern as you can get. But as you go west in Texas, it gets less southern and more western. Florida has a similar issue. Northern Florida is very southern, but the further south you go in Florida, the less southern it is. Texas is in the South, just as Florida, but only part of the state is southern, not the whole state.

Having grown up in El Paso and since living in Houston with relatives who have lived in every region of Texas, this is my opinion. Texas is not just southern. There is nothing about El Paso that is southern. The generalization by southern advocate are consistent with southeastern Texans where cotton plantations existed. As the most populated part of Texas, they assume their experience represents all Texans. Specifically, weather. There are portions of Texas that do get freezing weather every winter, panhandle and the mountain area of the State. Houston, Dallas, and Amarillo have awful weather but El Paso weather is great. Yes it gets hot in the summer but it is dry heat and the evenings are wonderful. It also gets extremely cold in the winter but it almost always warms up noticeably in the afternoon. Finally, you always have sunshine. El Paso counts and Texas is not southern it is multi-cultural and therefore unique. I love all of Texas and characterizing Texas as one culture is like saying the same thing about the U.S. We are all Americans but we are not the same.

I lived in Texas for a number of years. I came there from Georgia where I was born. The main difference I noticed between the Southeastern states and Texas is Texans favor beef BB over pork BB. Texas have a southern like accent and overall I felt at home there and when it was time to return to Georgia I felt sad. However I also lived in Ohio and then Pennsylvania which are definitely not southern and gain when it came time to leave I was sad. I'm basically an American who likes America no matter what part I live in. I forget to mention California when I lived in Davis for a short while then Alameda. No offence to those places but I was happy to leave there and return home to good ol GA.

The reason we have this debate is due to marketing. Following the Texas centennial in 1936, some Houstonians began marketing Texas as its own thing to separate it somewhat from the South. Prior to this there wasn’t any debate whether Texas was southern or not. It was and is. It just has its Texan flair, like the south Louisianan’s do as well. The South has a number of regions and cultures unique and different

Even Mississippi, a state known for taking a jackhammer to the floor to carve out a trough to drop the bar in and cement over it in a way to prove you can always lower the bar further doesn't want to be compared to Florida. I mean, I live in Arizona, and as of late, a lot of the actions of my state's "Duly Elected Batch of Idiots" has a lot of people comparing us to Florida, and none of it in favorable ways. Instead of arguing that it's NOT southern, she propped it up by saying it's it's own thing. I agree with Diane. You can claim that Texas is southwest, but East Texas and West Texas are like two totally different places. Like Illinois vs SOUTHERN Illinois. If ALLLL of Missouri is considered southern, when it would cover more than half of Illinois, then the bottom eighth of the state should count. I'm just gonna start calling it Western Kentucky till they agree to adopt us.

From a Fort Worth girl: If a person from any southern states go anywhere in the world, they are known as Americans. Texans in other countries are identified as Texans. Why you ask? We Texans carry a pride that no other state carries. Texas history is mandatory in school, we once had our own President, we can succeed, our flag is the most waived flag in the world in more countries than any other flag, it is the only flag that can be waived at the level of the American flag, the flag is a lone star, our capital is 14 feet taller than the us capital, we have the Alamo, we have Texas attitude, our own accent, Texas music, we are Texas proud. We are in the south but we are our own identity. My professor, a preacher, in college in Missouri , would tell freshman that he was led by God to minister and lead them to the promise land, Texas.

Texan here! I would like to point out that we Texans are the only ones that I know of that have a pledge of allegiance to our own state flag! Pretty strong point of Texan pride that goes towards the argument Texas may be southern yet so much more than just part of the south!

@@texasforever7887 You must be young. Sweet tea is an abomination that came to Texas in the late 80s/early 90s (in Houston at least) with the arrival of chain restaurants from the South. Memory serving, Po' Folks or Grandy's was the first one, but they were later followed by Chik-Fil-A and others. Check out the Texas Monthly article called "The Sweet Tea Line: Is sweet tea a thing in Texas or not?" Now I spent my fair time in Arkansas drinking sweet tea, but it just makes me more thirsty. When it is hot as Hell in Texas, the last thing I want is sweet tea.

As someone who moved from a northern state to a Texas small town, they were full of some of the rudest and most judgmental people my family has ever met. It took us three years to meet some decent people and when I finally moved out of the house for college I was left with some serious PTSD from the severe bullying I experienced.

Texas is not the South. Everything East of Houston is very southern. When you goto placss such as south Texas and west Texas, it touches Mexico just like California, Arizona, and New Mexico. Also, west amd south Texas is very dry and has the desert just like the other western states I named.

As a native Texan I think Diane went a little overboard with the "Texas is big" thing (everyone knows that already), but I didn't get Donna's argument that Texas is a collection of small towns. I've never been to the Deep South so I can't speak for the culture there, but what really makes our state distinct is the CITIES. Texas has FIVE of America's 15 most populous cities, while the rest of the South combined has just two (Jacksonville and Charlotte). I have been to all five and each one has unique qualities. Dallas is a finance town with suburban sprawl, Houston has a rich oil and space culture, San Antonio and Fort Worth feel more western and laid-back, and Austin is where the hippies hang out. (Not to mention El Paso, which isn't even in the same time zone.) From what I've heard there's not as much variety in other Southern cities; outside of Atlanta or much of Florida, they retain more culture from the surrounding areas. East Texas does have more small towns with a prototypical Southern vibe, but the cities and suburbs define Texas more than anything.

Born and raised in Canyon, Texas, in the Panhandle. Home of the 2nd largest canyon in the USA. Which most of the rest of the state doesn't know about or forgets about. The Panhandle is way different than other parts of Texas. Here in the Panhandle, we can have temperatures below 0 and above 100. We have been known to drop 70 plus degrees in 1 day. I hear all the time in doesn't snow in Texas, but here in the Panhandle, it snows multiple times during the winter. Texas is not surrounded by the Gluf it's only on one side. Most Texans don't have a southern drawl. I feel we are more than Southen.
