I always thought of Texas as overlapping The South and The West. As a westerner who was born in Chicago, I'm surprisingly okay with that. A lot of elements of Texas Culture is Southwestern/Mexico/Spanish inspired, making it a Western state. And yet, it has a lot in common with the South. I guess Texas is Texas.

Without finishing the video, I can tell you as a native Texan......sure, we're part of the South. We're also part of the Southwest. I've reached a point where if the South wants to accept us, that would be great. We'll be happy to be a part of the South. The culture is great, the weather sucks just like ours, the food is good and it's an overall great place, but we're TEXAS first. And I know some don't like us saying we're Texas first, but we're not overly worried about that. At least we can all agree we don't care how they do it up North. We're not perfect (neither is your state), and our weather pretty much sucks, but we're Texas, and we're proud we're Texas. And if we're not so great, why can't we keep these carpetbagging Calis from coming here? Seriously, somebody, tell us how to legally put a border wall starting at El Paso and going till it hits the Gulf Of Mexico. 🤔🙄

Having grown up in El Paso and since living in Houston with relatives who have lived in every region of Texas, this is my opinion. Texas is not just southern. There is nothing about El Paso that is southern. The generalization by southern advocate are consistent with southeastern Texans where cotton plantations existed. As the most populated part of Texas, they assume their experience represents all Texans. Specifically, weather. There are portions of Texas that do get freezing weather every winter, panhandle and the mountain area of the State. Houston, Dallas, and Amarillo have awful weather but El Paso weather is great. Yes it gets hot in the summer but it is dry heat and the evenings are wonderful. It also gets extremely cold in the winter but it almost always warms up noticeably in the afternoon. Finally, you always have sunshine. El Paso counts and Texas is not southern it is multi-cultural and therefore unique. I love all of Texas and characterizing Texas as one culture is like saying the same thing about the U.S. We are all Americans but we are not the same.

The reason we have this debate is due to marketing. Following the Texas centennial in 1936, some Houstonians began marketing Texas as its own thing to separate it somewhat from the South. Prior to this there wasn’t any debate whether Texas was southern or not. It was and is. It just has its Texan flair, like the south Louisianan’s do as well. @@rickwiles8835 what about hillbillies, especially those dressed up like stereotypical hillbillies who go round sayin' "You sure have a purdy mouf!"?

The only reason we still observe March 2nd is because it’s just too darn hot in July to do anything outdoors.

As a native Texan I think Diane went a little overboard with the "Texas is big" thing (everyone knows that already), but I didn't get Donna's argument that Texas is a collection of small towns. I've never been to the Deep South so I can't speak for the culture there, but what really makes our state distinct is the CITIES. Texas has FIVE of America's 15 most populous cities, while the rest of the South combined has just two (Jacksonville and Charlotte). I have been to all five and each one has unique qualities. Dallas is a finance town with suburban sprawl, Houston has a rich oil and space culture, San Antonio and Fort Worth feel more western and laid-back, and Austin is where the hippies hang out. (Not to mention El Paso, which isn't even in the same time zone.) From what I've heard there's not as much variety in other Southern cities; outside of Atlanta or much of Florida, they retain more culture from the surrounding areas. East Texas does have more small towns with a prototypical Southern vibe, but the cities and suburbs define Texas more than anything.

Born and raised in Canyon, Texas, in the Panhandle. Home of the 2nd largest canyon in the USA. Which most of the rest of the state doesn't know about or forgets about. The Panhandle is way different than other parts of Texas. Here in the Panhandle, we can have temperatures below 0 and above 100. We have been known to drop 70 plus degrees in 1 day. I hear all the time in doesn't snow in Texas, but here in the Panhandle, it snows multiple times during the winter. Texas is not surrounded by the Gluf it's only on one side. Most Texans don't have a southern drawl. I feel we are more than Southen.

I have never once celebrated March 2nd. Never had a day off from school or work for this day as well.

I'm not from Texas, but I live here. I've lived in Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas. The part of the country that Texas is in is...Texas. It's just not the same as the rest of the South. Similar, but different.
