The positives have outweighed any negatives in Thailand and that hasn't changed in the 47 odd years that I have travelled there. Any negatives that exist would be mirrored in the other SE Asian countries in any case, scams, areas littered with rubbish, poverty, harsh climates etc etc That being the case it really is impossible to say the country is over rated and that is clearly reflected in the comment of the interviewees, not withstanding its worldwide popularity. Nice one Chai. Cheers champ 🤩

I love the food in Thailand. Much of the fresh fruits and vegetables we can not find in the states. You can live a good and happy life if you respect the people and culture. Leave your entitlement at home. You are a guest in another country, so act as such. It is not overrated at all. Each city has its own character/energy, so a little of everything for everyone.

I know. I miss their food and fresh markets so much every day living in the US. It's been 10 years, but I still think about it everyday wishing I had access to real markets and real food from real farms. And the hospitality and customer service is sincere out there. Those yellow mangos are superb as well as those small yellow pineapples. It's nothing like an American supermarket. So delicious and healthy. Even non touristy areas are great to eat out, shop, stay, and look around. I like a couple days in the city until the smoke overwhelms, but the small towns and rural are mostly very down home most sincere kind of places. The dogs at night; not so much so.

What a question today! Every country in the world is run by the power of $£ though We definitely agreed with the people saying that Thailand isn’t at all overrated in anyway. Of course when we were spending time in Singapore and Japan we were really impressed with their advanced technology and systematic development that is in fact a lot better than many European countries in living standards. We didn’t enjoy the grey s.Korea and hectic Vietnam as much as we thought. But hey this is personal preferences and there is no such thing as a perfect country. And then when we were in Thailand the quality in life happiness is by far more lively at ease, spiritually peaceful or fun packed full of activities to great down time tranquility relaxation for both body and mind. Thai massage both traditional master healing techniques as well as the light relaxation one is our favorite 😍 Thailand gives you the full taste of life freedom that many are seeking. It is always a full table out there and you just need to pick your favorite plate. As a human living in the society we are not sure if it’s the delicious food or hot weather or that beautiful smiles on the local faces but we certainly found the Thai culture and way of life is by far more positive than back home and it is the reason why we also start our retirement plan in Thailand❤❤❤😊

South Korea is gray if you go in the winter. I remember traveling on an overnight ferry from Shimoniseki, Japan, to Busan, South Korea one December in the 1970s when we still had film in cameras. There was a group of American guys on the ferry and as we entered Busan harbor, one says to the other, "Hey, Bob, you didn't need to bring color film. Everything in Korea is in black and white." 😅 South Korea is best avoided from November to March.

I'd expect Thailand is going to be getting expensive in the next couple years as lots of people are headed out that way. I first went in 2008. I couldn't believe how cheap and how nice the Thai people really are. It was surreal. I too am thinking 'bout leaving the US soon. I think Indonesia might also be another good country as well as Philippines if Thailand gets too full or too expensive.

Sure, the land has many things to offer and many activities you can do but some are overrated for sure. The problem with thailand is the mess they have with rules/laws, the 2 measures they apply to many things, the mentality / lifestyle that make it "risky" for any traveller to have from just a bad feeling to completely a bad experience there. Let's start with rules/laws: the fact that prostitution is illegal and thailand is famous for prostitution, is already a big hint about this mess and probably lowers the threshold for any foreigner to even respect any rules/laws in thailand. Example the rent of a roller without driving license and what it cost if something happened. The 2 measures start from the 2 tier pricing many places have to scandal about something a foreigner did and completely ignoring something worse that a thai person did. Other examples are the not be loud in public places or becoming loud when upset and seeing many thais ignoring this supposed rules. Happened to me in Terminal 21 where a thai was talking on speaker phone all around the place and even inside an elevator full of people. The 2 tier pricing made never sense because you already pay taxes, have expences to to thailand and you support the local economy and what does thailand? They penalize you by making an attraction double the price as the locals play. If an attraction is worth x THB calculated by the cost of mainteinance + some gain, i don't see what it matters if I am foreigner or how much money i have in my pocket. This will be even more relevant next year when they will collect the 300THB tourist tax who are suppesed to go those attractions and don't forget that you are already paying a tourist tax in your plane ticket (for those who go to thailand since many years remember maybe the 500THB you had to pay when you leave thailand that are now in your plane ticket). The mentality/lifestyle includes many things from scams/making easy bucks to be in time. Again, the 2 tier pricing or the not opening of the taxi meter. Before somebody comments to use Grab/Bolt, know that i had already Bolt driver asking me more money than what the app said and many times cars with the wrong plates (in Pattaya just a view weeks ago, the police had an operation catching this unlicensed drivers). The problem with the taxi is gettting worse and worse because they not only try those trick/ask for more money to foreigners but thai as well. When then it happens with an official registred taxi at Bkk Airport at 6am when you just arrived in thailand, it's bad feeling from the start. Making it even worse is the fact that the taxi driver started the meter when i sat in the car, asked me where i go and i answered in fluent thai "You will be happy, we go to Pattaya". He turned the meter off and asked me for more money and then proceeded to show me a fabricated price list of supposed prices imposed by the airport even if i said that he hears how well i speak thai and if he thinks i don't know how thailand works or what the prices are. Sure i reported him ( by the way he tried to pull the slip from my hands so that i could not report him) but the bad feeling was there from 5 minutes after putting my feets in thailand. I know, maybe some things come from my age and didn't really change in thailand but example the constant calling is so annoying (taxi, massage, 1 drink, picture, travel, food or whatever). Connected to probaly all the 3 things is the traffic jams caused by not having really parking rules, nobody enforcing them and the fact that so many things block the streets that it causes traffic jams. Some years back, Huay Kwang market was "cleaned up" because of those traffic jams and the jams really did become rare there but less than a year later, we are back to the same situation. This is cause of danger as well because the walkways are so full of stands and people that you probably prefer walk on the street cause traffic jam and be at risk to be hit from a scooter / car. Adding to all of this is the weather and the expectations. It doesn't matter if good or bad weather because if it is good weather, it's probably extremely hot as well so this is a danger as well. Expectations is another problem because maybe you hear that thailand is cheap but then want to go to the best resort that cost 200-300$ a night even in thailand. All together makes thailand a "risky" (not in the sense of robbery or such) place to travel because you never know how it will be, what will you encounter or who you will meet that can make your stay the best you had in your life or the worst. This is confirmed from the fact that i know only people that did go to thailand and never will go again or people that go and will continue to go forever. I know that some of the people that will go to thailand forever (including me) had maybe a bad start but tried again and the next time had completely a different experience there. For me it is a love / hate relationship and maybe yes, the sense of "adventure" that thailand brings is what attracts me to thailand.

It really depends. If you're on holiday, staying in a nice resort, enjoying massages and cocktails for a couple of weeks, everything should be great (and not overrated). However, if you've bought a home, made alterations, purchased a vehicle, organized your driver’s license, tried to get some electronics fixed, tried to open a bank account, organized your visa ( 90 day reports, 800.000 in the bank ) you might find that Thailand is overrated.
