From zero tolerance to decriminalisation, Thailand’s recent u-turn on its cannabis laws is lighting up a billion-dollar industry. Officially it’s for medicinal use but the legal grey area means ‘ganja’ lovers are celebrating. Subscribe: ab.co/3yqPOZ5
It’s the country which gave us the words ‘bong’ and ‘ganja’.
In Thailand, cannabis has been used for centuries in traditional medicine.
But when the US launched its ‘war on drugs’ in the 1970s, Thailand became a key partner, placing cannabis on the narcotics list and toughening penalties against it.
This June, the country took it off that list, meaning cannabis sellers and recreational users no longer risked jail for selling or possessing cannabis.
In tourist hotspots, a ‘ganja-culture’ is fast taking hold. In Bangkok’s Khao San Road nightspot, it seems easier to buy a joint than a Pad Thai.
‘Now it’s legal - God gave a gift for us’, says Choco Gonzales, a cannabis seller in Bangkok.
And it’s party time for tourists at the famous full moon party at Koh Phangan in the country’s southeast.
‘Wherever you go now, it’s Amsterdam again in Asia’, says an Italian tourist at the party.
As Australia reignites on its own debate about legalising cannabis, Southeast Asia correspondent Mazoe Ford travels around Thailand to meet the new crop of ‘ganja-preneurs’ cashing in on the green rush.
In Bangkok, Kitty Chopaka, a shop owner selling cannabis products and a leading advocate of decriminalisation, is still pinching herself.
‘I never thought in my lifetime that this would actually happen…But at the same time I knew it has to be done.’
In the southern island of Samui, resort owner Carl Lamb reckons the liberalisation of the laws is attracting overseas tourists.
‘You can really feel it's reinvigorated the market. There's a new energy here.’
Ford also hitches a ride on the private jet of the politician behind the policy - Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
He takes us to Thailand’s east to spruik the medicinal cannabis industry which the government hopes will become a billion-dollar industry.
‘It turned out that majority of my voters chose to vote for my party… some people even called my party (the) “Cannabis Party”’, he tells Ford.
But not everyone welcomes the change. More than a thousand doctors have warned that the drug was delisted before proper safeguards and regulations were in place.
‘We don't want to be the cannabis haven of the world’, say Doctor Chanchai Sittipunt from Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine.
But Kitty Chopaka says going back isn’t possible - the genie is out of the bottle.
‘That bottle is broken. It’s gone!’

I'm an Australian that has gone to court twice for marijuana use, once in the 80's and another in the 90's for personal use cultivation. These are the only 2 crimes I've ever committed, but I now have a criminal record. While I was in court another person had a court case charged with assault, he punched someone in the face 3 times, the victim had to go to hospital, but he got a good behavior bond , which means after a certain period it comes off your criminal record. I got a criminal record (a conviction) and had to pay a large fine for growing 3 plants in my backyard. My neighbors had got robbed and the police just happened to look over their fence when they were investigating the robbery and saw my plants. BTW there were several court cases that day just for marijuana use or possession. It's such a waste of the legal system resources.

I was never arrested for it but now you can buy it legally and I'm still a criminal because of the federal aspect. And it all happened in my 20s when they should have just dropped them.

I've been living in Thailand for a long time and I think this is a good idea. Nobody should be locked up for smoking marijuana, it's not 100% harmless but it stacks up far better than any other, including the legal ones. I lived in Bangkok for many years and Samui. Pot was always available. Pot was also flown in from Mexico and apparently immigration turned a blind eye. Incredibly strong pot as well. This was way before this law came in. Samui pot was compressed and full of stem and seed but the Bangkok stuff was phenomenal. Thai police would work with sellers. Unsuspecting tourists would buy , the seller would call the cops, tourist would get caught, surrender their passport and then have to buy it back.

My first time growing cannabis for myself was a hit. I had two plants. I think they both Hermes on me but if you know you know. Nothing wrong with a hermie plant at all. Had enough to last me months when it was all said and done. Also growing cannabis isn’t like growing corn or wheat. You have to really micromanage the process. Always check the plants for signs of stress. Make sure the water you’re giving it is ph appropriate. And the soil has to have enough nutrients to last the grow (especially outside where there are more variables vs inside where you make sure you get a good soil and put the nutrients in the water you’re feeding it). Investing in greenhouse infrastructure may be the way to help farmers switch from one crop to this one.

What creates the major profits in the firstplace is criminalization and control of the substance that drives up need and demand for the symbiotic plant. Once you allow it in free market they cannot drive up and create value any longer. So yes, decriminalization is the way if you do not want a profit driven society. The alternatives to this are far worse and more expensive.

No one should face a punishment for using medicine anywhere in the world. It's time we all come together and say enough is enough. No one should ever have to worry about simple canabis charges. Black markets or using harmful herbicides or pesticides to grow should be heavily charged and stopped from happening.. but as long as people are just using the plant bought from a legal dispensery they should never have to worry about fines or jail/prison. It's time we push legalization world wide and fast.

My dad was a big weed grower in Australia, stupidly gave me my first joint at 9, told me to walk up to mum & say "look mum Im smoking a joint" she went off her head! But, Weed is BAD! Its a FACT it causes memory loss, PERMANENT Anxiety & brain damage & Permanent mental issues such as paranoia, some poor buggers get delusions, one friend is in & out of nut houses from smoking hydro 24/7 for 30 years, I had to quit because my anxiety (many smokers know this) was insane, always crossing my arms, holding my chest etc cause anxiety was sooo horrible, the WEEK I quit weed ALL my anxiety went away, I knew it was the weed tho cause after 30 years as soon as I would smoke the anxiety would kick in, instantly. Medicinal OIL is great for many people, the stuff that does NOT get you high is a life saver for many with seizures etc, but normal THC weed that gets you high does NOTHING for Physical Pain, the ONLY people who claim otherwise are liars who just want an excuse to get high, EVERYONE I know, hell, everyone that Ive ever met ALL know from experience, it does nothing for any pain. I was the FIRST one who wanted weed legal, but that was before I realized how bad it can be, if u smoke it everyday ur week.

Thai cultivars are narrow leaf slow maturing varieties. Look for what most growers would call a "14 week sativa" and you're in the territory. I am Australian, I had a friend who had University degrees and studied so hard to get them, they had been working in their career choice for years earning great money and one day on a day off decided to smoke weed, they were pulled over, drug tested, charged and then lost their job for having a criminal record. They felt so disgraced that they ended up committing suicide because of one joint ruining everything they had worked for. Rules here are way to strict ruining people's lives, on one hand it would be good to see the rules changed but on the other hand I will be angry because It'd be to late to save a friend. I have smoked weed once, didn't really like the effect personally but I can see the benefits it has on people. I am 34 yo and have never understood why it's illegal, if it's because it's hard to regulate/hard for governments to make money/tax from it then okay but if it's because it's "dangerous" then why is smoking cigarettes not illegal considering it kills more people and is also just a plant.

Only availabe strains here are mostly indicas that puts you on the coach and you don't feel like doing anything because it's much easier to grow those type of strains for a regular dealer. I can't wait for the day when weed is legalized here in Finland, so I can get a better sense of the spectrum and find the strains that might possibly increase my prodictivity.

It's honestly shocking that Australia has yet to get with the program. I grew up in California and weed was always around and available when I was young, then in 1992 (I think) a permissive medial law was passed which allowed basically anyone to get a medical card and purchase it legally. Then came full recreational legalization. Through all of that nothing negative has happened at all, criminalization is literally just the government pointlessly enforcing their power and punishing innocent people. Your friend was a victim of the state and the infuriating thing is that it was so, so unnecessary. Just let people live ffs

The barely veiled hysterical tone of this report is hilarious to me. As an American who has been living with legal cannabis for nearly a decade it’s not a big deal. What’s crazy to me is the way Australia behaves towards marijuana in 2022.

Can "medicine" not be preventative, or life enhancing? Why do you think medicine is only for "sick people"? Edit: I'm more concerned about teenagers being exposed to "drinking culture" or "gambling culture" than cannabis culture. The social imposts of alcohol and gambling are much worse.

@@Dharma_Bum It's our responsibility to learn how to critically assess reportage. The days when the ABC could be trusted to at least make an effort to maintain ethical reporting standards are long gone. We know MSM all too often has an agenda, pushing a prescribed narrative that betrays a bias. Recognising the bias in framing is very informative. It can tell us whose interests the piece serves, and goes some of the way to identifying motivations. Having said that, one must also apply the same rigour to their own assumptions and narratives. It's not enough to throw the baby out with the bath water and conclude that just because there is a preponderance of crap media, that all media is therefore crap (edit: not saying that applies to you specifically). That generalised approach is lazy and invariably results in self-deception and exploitation. Learn how to consume media critically and it won't matter how biased it is, you'll be able to recognise the spin from facts.

I love how they sell the buds out of jars that you can actually look at before you buy. In the U.S. legal retail scene buying has been reduced to clinical, sterile stores that look and feel like a Verizon phone store. Everything is prepackaged, you don't know what the flower smells or looks like, I've opened my live oil at home only to find it leaked all over the packaging. I remember the magic of head shops from the '70s. Modern American cannabis stores aren't really fun places. But Thailand looks like it's keeping the vibe!

The whole world needs to legalise it. The real reason it is illegal is largely due to the alcohol industry lobbiest putting pressure on governments to keep the status quo intact, which greatly benefits the alcohol industry and government taxes, but has an enourmous detrimental effect on societies, communities, families and individuals. I live in the UK, our government is around 20-30yrs behind the rest of the world unfortunately, which results in high prices for the end users, but everyone smokes all the same. It's a joke and governments need to stop dictating peoples freedoms and how they choose to live their lives.

Tbh as a thai person ganja was used for quite a while already. Legalizing it gives us the choice to use better products and specific strains for specific problems. Like myself having sleeping problems on somedays , old accident operations that still hurt on some days or extremely burnout workdays this can help a lot and not having a hangover like old cheap products.

I am in southern Thailand and cannabis is literally everywhere. Many shops have a couple plants growing out front. You see old ladies walking down the street carrying potted plants. Lots of roadside stands selling it. Everywhere. All at absolutely ridiculous prices. About $25 a gram for quality! Although, I think that will change for the better once the Thais realize they can grow it outdoors during the right time of year. They do need to learn about drying and curing correctly, which they will. From what I understand, the American and Canadian grower conglomerates had a huge influence $$$$ on it's legalization. Buuuut, I see a huge crackdown coming as the government will not let it remain wide-open as it is with zero controls and zero tax revenues. There is huge opposition in the Legislature right now. But, also huge money behind it's remaining legal. Personally, the chemicals the farmer was spraying with impunity concern me more than the legalization of it.
