"The 1619 Project" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones puts the stories of slavery, resistance and Black Americans at the centre of the country's story.
First published by The New York Times Magazine in 2019 to mark the 400th anniversary of slavery in the US, "The 1619 Project" has has now been expanded into a book with new essays, including one that makes the case for reparations for descendants of formerly enslaved people.
The idea that the introduction of slavery in 1619 should be considered a foundational event in the US origin story has generated heated criticism and backlash. States including Florida and Texas have banned “The 1619 Project” in public schools - moves considered part of a broader conservative campaign to restrict the teaching of “critical race theory”.
In this episode of The Stream, we'll speak to Nikole Hannah-Jones about the latest version of the project.

As Squanto’s Heir, a few weeks after the disappearance of an official or unofficial mention of the 400th Anniversary of Thanksgiving (1621) as being the 400th Anniversary, and watching even US State Department wokeness cross out noting the 400th Anniversary, I tend to look at the issue of wokeness, and the sloppiness and haste of the 1619 project in failing to grasp indentured servitude, in the way my American Indian ancestors would have through the time of Tecumseh (early 1800s). Another attempt by another group to not give proper respect to the land and to Natural Law - and little self-respect of what would look to Tecumseh to be a different group of looters with an incomplete, nuance-stripped pack of lies and half-truths. There is much more, but now is not the time or forum. Stay tuned.

Deuteronomy 28:15-16,32,48 [15]But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee: [16]Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. [32]Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand. [48]Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
