Thank you Professor Nikole H Jones for the 1619 Project. I knew about some of the topics you have touched on before the project was released but of course not all of it. Ever since I was a child I questioned our nations history and as black children we were often told don't worry about it and ignore the past and just more forwards. But I believe black folks can't heal until we honor our ancestors by naming them and by claiming their rage as to what happened to them. And thank you Oprah for finally presenting Professor Jones's work.

I love this lady, she is so smart. The fact that not only her work - but her as an individual, as well - says a lot more about her attackers than it does about her or her work. As a bookseller, I was so happy to put her book in many hands. Many came back and said it opened their eyes. She’s done the country a great service, in my mind. Good for her. Thank you for having her on, Oprah.

Ohio is the birthplace place of American civil rights, on March 1st 1803 Ohio entered the Union as the 17th state and the first state in United States history from day one to outlaw selling or buying slaves within state lines, all the other 16 states were slave states. Have you ever heard “professor Jones” thank Ohio for her contributions: harboring and not returning as many runaway slaves as possible back to a life of slavery ? All the white ppl in Ohio who hid slaves on their property (in their homes, under their homes, in their attics, in their cellars, in farm barns, on large tracts of private property in cabins) from the slave states who sent slave bounty hunters looking to return runaway slaves back to a life of slavery. It’s time for Oprah and NHJ and others like them to acknowledge the contributions of Ohio, it’s my opinion if Ohio hadn’t come along when she did, slavery might never have ended!

@Smart_Robot_01 slaverry wouldn't have ended. PERIOD!! Because, your whole country benefited from slavery. Why would you say this. Because, after 700,000 men die to free this country of it's evil. Just 12 years later the whole country went back to apartheid in America and Ohio. Ohio had sundown towns and counties. This is why she said, you can't accept all the glory and not accept the evil of your country. This is what NHJ is trying to get us to see. You can't point out one state, that's a part of the Union. It's not one or the other It's all or nothing. This country went from, slavery, apartheid and now Mass Incarceration. And what does all of this have in common?

I absolutely and deeply appreciate learning about the pieces you highlighted here -- gives me a better context for understanding the social determinants of health impacting my commumity. I am ready to read this book.❤❤❤ Nicole, I do believe we are ready as a nation to create something new. We all who are on the side of truth, love, and justice must believe together. 10 out of 10! 19 non-fiction essays, 70% of the book written by historians, and 36 poem and/or fiction stories alongside chronological dated events in between each non-fiction essay. The best book I've ever read on American slavery and perfectly connects the past to our present day racism, disproportionate injustices, and inequalities. I've read more than once while most haven't read at all who have been indoctrinated to dismiss such a wealth of knowledge. Plus, over 1000 endnotes to site the sources that are in the project. A+ project!!!

The public transportation issues of not connecting the city in making it easier for all to move around is a national thing. When I think of Philadelphia Milwaukee or Chicago Detroit Pittsburgh you know places that have received Federal and State dollars to enhance and expand their public transportation systems yet you don't see it so you know then you have the new gentrification throughout the country it's all apropos in the book of essays completely compels us to really look at several issues with Solutions

I didn't know most of what they spoke about in this video and it's disturbing to hear that enslaved black women were treated as property, and could not be raped and yet assaulted by their owners. I will never understand why humans can treat other humans in such a way and I'm grateful for all those who paved the way for today's civil and human rights. On the flipside, Nikole is right, we are on the brink of democracy falling into darkness - I really hope and pray that does not happen, however it takes it's people to keep it thriving. It's insanity that this is even in question today, but it is....

Majority of slaves within in the African Diaspora went to modern day Brazil and slavery didn’t end in Brazil until the 1880’s. Her saying majority of slaves were in the US is down right false.

Interesting! That date 1619 was a heavily recorded date. So, I checked the Virginia shipping records of that time and they dont mention any slave ships! The 1619 Project is a lie! It wasn't a Slave Trade; BUT, it was Transportation of EUROPEAN CONVICTS to the New World. Primary Source: Library of Congress. Winfrey asked Jones was she surprised by the resistance it has received. Surprisingly see answered yes, but then went on to say she expected a measure of it, as it was an invocative effort on her part. I had to make sure I heard her correctly. I was thinking provocative, but she in fact did say invocative, meaning she hoped to win the opposition over to the Black perspective of the history of the country. She did this in the mist of Trumpism, the MAGA movement and far-Right conservatism, not to mention riots over what Black many Black people, if not most saw as a string of unjustified killings of Black people, and a rally by far-Right extremist that resulted in a death and numerous injuries. I'd say in the context of that, it is more likely to provoke what is not wanted than to get what is desired, and that has been the case. That being said Hannah Jones has made other provocative or invocative comments prior to her 1619 Project. She has made the controversial comments that gentrification is not necessarily a bad thing for Black people, and that Black children would benefit from having a White child in her classroom. These comments are certainly not in line with woke orthodoxy, so why have they been ignored? She presents them as conductive to our betterment as a group. They are also consistent with the newer approach to solving concentrated poverty. It is believed that large pockets of poverty perpetuate the conditions. The older housing voucher strategy, put too many low income people in the same community, and many of these communities may have been in a decline themselves, or had significant social ills, even though they were in suburban communities and predominately White. The newer strategy of mixed income housing aimed at putting people in more effluent communities, which have even better amenities, especially the schools, but put them into them in smaller numbers - to spread them out so as not to have too many people of the same background living as neighbors. It is hoped that the better amenities and the social culture of these more affluent communities, will rug off, so to speak, on the new residents and thus prevent the perpetuation of the culture of poverty. This new strategy has been in effect long enough for there to be adequate data to measure its success. Why have those who see themselves as our leaders not reported to us how this new strategy has faired? It seems right in Hannah-Jones' wheelhouse. Are we really looking for solutions to our problems? Why hasn't the federal government reported on this? Can equity let alone equality be achieved, if we still live separately and un-equal? Is what we really want, as a group, segregation, but with prosperity? If we aren't being real/realistic how can we expect others to me anymore than we are? Sure half the country is in denial about the countries history and true creed, but are we also not true to what we say we are about and want? There need to be an equivalent acknowledgement of the history of the ongoing impact of our not facing reality and being true to ourselves as well. That we can utter the words Back lives Matter in the mist of over half a century of an increase in the level of violence and the level of heinousness of the violence among us, is telling. We are ignoring it, as our chickens continue to come home and roost. There can be no progress for us as a group while the disorder and violence continues in so many of our communities. Government policy alone does account for the existence of the levels we have reached. A true history of of our complicity in helping to get to this condition, is clearly there, for those who choose to simply see it. We are in the decade of the twenty-twenties and we could use the 2020 hindsight that our contemporary history teaches us to resolve our internal problems, during this decade. It is moving past quickly. If we are not yet ready to get serious, when will we ever?

1. Use History - History is frozen in place to where its always racist/bigoted. This appeals to emotions & gives the speaker credibility. 2. Manipulate The Data- Use the inequality of outcome data (after intentionally reopening the wounds of history) & matter of factly state that it reflects an inequality of opportunity. (Remember, correlation does not always mean causation). 3. Bury The Lede - Indirectly assert a world view based entirely on power dynamics, talk about privilege, fragility, dogwhistling, backlash, even dabble in constructs. But under no circumstances voice the main belief that white people sometime in the past decided to use skin color to "invent" the concept of race as a power device to oppress certain black & black adjacent races, which is a conspiracy theory. Racism, sadly, was extremely pervasive in the past, and still exists all over the world today...yet, there is no evidence that one race invented it. It reveals that this is not a theory based in honesty & good faith. It's designed as a power play that weaponizes bitterness, pain, and the saddest moments of our History. The Civil Rights Era was righteous & successful because it was based in a truth, good faith, and the goodness in humanity. It did not require a world of postmodern power dynamics & critical theory to be effective or even to be understood.

I think it is equelly important that the same thing is happening in Palestine today also because of America that still supports these horrible acts. Feel like there is mostly silence on this topic, thats unfortunate. The country that recognizes it is SOUTH AFRICA, that says a lot❤️
