Have adult rear passengers and want to take a trip? In an SUV there are jammed up tight to the back of your headrest. In a minivan they can slide back, stretch their legs and enjoy the better view. There is also way more room for cargo. If I didn’t have to tow, I would ditch my Durango for a Sienna in a heartbeat!

I had a 2015 Sienna SE and it was a really good vehicle overall but when it came time to replace it, I didn't get the all new Sienna. I need a minivan first and foremost for cargo capacity. The non-removable second row seats was a deal breaker. Second, I need something that can get to the ski hill in snowstorm. The low ground clearance and lack of a mechanical AWD system didn't appeal to me. But if you're driving around the city all the time and don't need maximum cargo space, this might be the van for you--especially if it is as reliable as the previous generation.

As someone that transports people to ski for a living, I see no shortage of lowered WRX's get up Snowbird and Alta in Utah...some of the worst conditions in the country. as far as removing the mid row seats, a couple of notes from someone who did: the mid row seats contain the air bags for the rear bench seat passengers. if you remove the mid row seats, the rear passengers don't have airbags. I don't recommend removing the mid row seats and hauling people in the back, might not be *as* safe, but its still pretty safe. also, the seat rails don't come out easily, so you are left with a set of slide rails in the way, its very annoying. As far as the airbag system goes, disconnect the 12v battery thats in the back, unplug the seats, and use a 2.5ohm resistor for the air bag plug, the van doesn't know the difference. if you don't resistor the air bag circuits, the dash will pop up a warning that is not clearable and will cover everything . also, toyota at one point likely had the mid row seats removeable. how can I tell? with the mid row out, and the seats uplugged, it does not look for seatbelts or weights in the mid row seats, nor does it throw any codes or BCM errors, and the "seat belt lights" on the infotainment screen don't light up for the mid row seats upon first turn on.

We were considering this exact spec, makes a ton of sense if you need a three row, road trip capable, all season vehicle. My only concern is battery pack life and the eventual need to replace it if keeping the vehicle fit super long term. We are probably unusual in our rationale but looking for a daily driver, durable, long term low upkeep, 3 row that is a road trip machine. Under those criteria we decided on a 22 SR5 Premium 4 runner 3 row. Yes aware of the comparative lack of space and economy but utmost reliability, build quality, and the plus of having another capable 4wd for backcountry travels makes it the best choice for us. I want to embrace the new hybrid stuff but I fear the longterm upkeep. And by longterm, we are looking fir a 20-25 year device Luce for us. Which I realize is a bit strange... but also the reason I think these kind of old school SUV’s will hold their value well.
@Kristian_Saile2 жыл бұрын
Btw, I think a revisit of the final year of the 4Runner and the virtues of being the last true Old school rig on the market would be a cool story. And showcase the capability of a more base one like an SR5.

Toyota warranties the hybrid battery for 10 years or 150k miles. The warranty the hybrid components for 8 years or 150k miles. The cost to replace the hybrid battery is anywhere from 5-10k. But the battery usually lasts 180-200k miles.
@Kristian_Saile2 жыл бұрын
@@americandude3825 yeah and I think that’s really good for a hybrid/battery warrantee. My last Land Cruiser I had for 20 years. I want something that can really last and out on the miles. That’s the only way I justify spending what a new Toyota costs these days. And while that warrantee is good, at 150,000 to 200,000 miles I would be looking at a 5-10k service to replace the battery, possibly higher given inflation in 10 years time. So saying I wanted to keep it for 10 years versus 20, then I would be faced with selling a vehicle that is known to need a full battery replacement in the near future. I would have to think that would have a big impact on the resale. As much as the mpg’s and Toyota’s good track record with hybrids is, for me it doesn’t offset that possibly giant monetary risk between 150-200k miles. Whereas with the older Sienna and a current 4 Runner, with routine upkeep they can exceed 400k miles without needing major work. The taxi industry was really bummed when they switched to a hybrid as the gas Sienna was a staple in the sector that saw huge service life in harsh driving conditions.

AWD is not needed for most families unless you live in heavy snow areas. I am in Toronto and usual 2 wheel drive with winter tires are enough.
@getrightoutoftown2 жыл бұрын
In my experience it has a lot more to do with your local terrain than how much snow you get. I used to live in Edmonton, Alberta and FWD was pretty much always fine, because 99% of the roads were flat or a slight incline. When it is snowy and cold with FWD you accelerate a bit slower, but no big deal. AWD doesn't help you stop any faster, so it's not any safer on flat roads. Now I live in the Okanagan, and our next minivan will definitely be AWD even though our winter is milder here. That's because only about half the roads are flat, there are lots of roads that are substantially inclined and it's not uncommon to find roads with pretty extreme inclines. On these inclines AWD makes the difference between getting completely stuck or needing to turn around vs. getting to your destination. Also, in circumstances where you are needing to accelerate uphill to stay safe (like an uphill left hand turn we need to make every time we drive to our house), AWD could avoid some big problems.

There is one versio that comes with stock .5" lift and it only comes in Cement and one other color. I'll stay tuned for an upgrade lifted vehicle. Also raise the interior roof. AWD get less MPG , but not this E-AWD. you actually can get higher MPG if you can control the regenerative braking better. the motor on the back also adds additional regenerative braking to charge the battery compare to the 2wd version.

So which one do you think is better, awd or 2wd? The price is 2000 more
@JCJourney Жыл бұрын
@@AaAa-pp1cr I will pick awd for all my vehicles if possible. you don't need awd 99.9% of the time you drive. it is always that 0.1% that gets you. It is a little scary driving a 5000 lb vehicle with a couple kids on the back on a rainy cold morning going up a hill and the two front tires slip and you don't have 4wd. I hope this info helps. :) I will suggest to pick trim model that comes with 18inch wheel instead of upgraded 20 inch for just the look.

This is a lot better than a gas guzzling low traction Odyssey.
@Matthew-ip6xl2 жыл бұрын
The odyssey would pass this thing going uphill fully loaded with people. That’s the trade off between no this power greenie weenie mobile and a vehicle that will get it done effortlessly, like the odyssey.
@user-tb7rn1il3q2 жыл бұрын
@@Matthew-ip6xl Actually the Sienna would dust the Odyssey in the mountains. Electric motors aren’t affected by thin air, not to mention the Odyssey couldn’t put the power down with the front wheels unloaded.
@Matthew-ip6xl2 жыл бұрын
@@user-tb7rn1il3q you do realize that the majority of the siennas power is from the combustion engine correct? Those two tiny electric motors don’t make it a Tesla. The difference is astonishing- not that you’ve ever driven both in that situation, otherwise you wouldn’t be saying such nonsense.
@user-tb7rn1il3q2 жыл бұрын
@@Matthew-ip6xl Yes, but it will make up the difference in power at high altitudes. The difference between a high compression I4 and a mild compression V6 is barely anything. With the electric motor torque it will easily out muscle the V6. In addition the Sienna will have better traction. I was underwhelmed with the ancient Honda V6. It makes a lot of noise, uses a lot of gas, and is just barely faster at sea level.
@Matthew-ip6xl2 жыл бұрын
@@user-tb7rn1il3q you clearly haven’t driven them if you’re complaining about noise in the odyssey lol. The sienna has the serious noise and droning issues. You can talk elevation all day long but at the end of the day it still doesn’t equalize the sienna only have 174 ft lbs of torque and the odyssey having 262. Even a mile above sea level isn’t enough to level the playing field with a spread that large. The sienna is dog shit in comparison.

..Yah, 1st I wanted a Prius Prime then aRAV4 Prime, then a Hybrid Highlander, but am tending toward a Toyota Sienna Hybrid now
@jimthumerzs69812 жыл бұрын
My old first-gen (2005) Highlander would blow through a foot a snow with ease - much better than any RAV4 or CRV that I've owned. I'm not sure what kind of 4WD system it had, or if it was all in my head (or tires!) but if this Sienna's electric motor system compares to that old Highlander, then it's a true Snow Machine! That said, the new Sienna's front end IS ugly, and not only is the fact the 2nd row seats don't come out, the whole load floor is full of bumps and latches and stuff that would tear up the bottom of any heavy object slid into the van. It also would make for uncomfortable sleeping in the back, should one want to use the van for camping/travel trips.
@shawn576 Жыл бұрын
The ground clearance kills it. Any time I've ever had a problem in snow, it's because the snow was relatively deep and the car would get hung up. My friend's Chevy Blazer had crappy 2WD but the ground clearance meant it never got stuck. That said, this ghetto AWD system would probably work 99% of the time. Won't get stuck in the ruts at a McDonalds drivethrough (yes this happen to me once in a Corolla).

Rented the Pacifica. Extremely comfortable, nice to drive, great cup holder / front storages. However, it has stupid and fiddly controls on top of being a "Chrystler". So nice though that it actually makes me want to check out other mini vans. Hybrids are an automatic disqualification.

I agree. I had a 2015 VW Jetta Sportswagon TDI (Diesel engine). That car was HEAVY and it’s weight was always enough to remain so stable in snow. I’d cruise by all the stranded SUVs in ditches during each scow storm and I’d just cruise by. The tires were below average OEM tires-nothing special. Diesel engines are so heavy and that was enuff to do the trick. I still miss my beautiful wagon…the power of the diesel engine was phenomenal. I even passed a Maserati once. MPG was 58-59. Better than a hybrid!

wondering why would you need an "athletic" car on a car designed for family travel in mind, shouldn't it be more efficient on mileage and safe awd that we need to look for? not to mention toyota is very reliable

Because some people still don’t want a vehicle that’s a bore to dive, no matter the use of it. All of the above can be important, but aren’t necessarily equal to everyone. We’re still allowed to have individual preferences last I checked…
