I know you can’t hit on everything in a review. Here’s a couple of cool things you missed. The rear power gate is also hands free opening. Wave your hand in front of the Subaru emblem. There is a puddle light mounted in the gate to illuminate the area when the gate is open. Behind the gold accents on the roof rails are tie down points. Subaru StarLink is the app/system that allows you to remotely start , adjust temps, lock / unlock, and notify you of your vehicle’s health. Headlight high beams can be set to automatic. The rear seats recline. They also fold flat from the rear cargo are with levers. There is a full size matching spare tire with a pressure sensor. You can lock your keys in and manually unlock the vehicle from the rear gate handle area w an owner specified code. There are more cool things too. The engine being turbocharged requires only 87 octane and not premium grade like most engine with the same displacement with a turbo. Last but not least . The gearing is Outback Wilderness specific at 4.10:1. Which makes it surprisingly quick. As an owner of a VW GTI found out one day on my commute home.😉 Surprised might be and understatement. I wish I could have takin a video of the conversation at the next traffic light. 😂

The only two things I don't like about it is the gas mileage and that I can't get it in red. But, it makes a very strong case for itself. Definitely worth a look and a test drive.

I like your review of the 2024 Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition. I just get one 5 months ago. I have had a 1972 and 1974 Chev. Blazers, 1947 and 1968 Jeeps, 6 Chev 4x4 pickups so far. I must say this Outback is more that I expected. Every morning weather permitting I take Dakota (95 lb. lab) out for her morning ride. I have 600 A of duck club to ride around. I live in Duck country 5 miles from the Mississippi River. When it is wet we have gumbo. As long as I don't high center I can go most anywhere. I have used X mode everyday in some places. I got the Wilderness because it has a 9.3 inch clearance. I had a 1966 GTO when I was a senior. I do believe that my Outback is faster off the line, with the turbo. So far I love it

Thanks for the great review of the Outback Wilderness. I have a '21 Jeep Wrangler JLU that I love. My lease is up in September of '24. I had always planned on buying it at the end of the lease. I'm will also be 71 years old by September. I still have no problem getting into the Jeep but my wife of 46 years is shorter than I and it is getting harder for her. I am really liking the Outback. It still has the ruggedness of a Jeep but will be more comfortable all the way around than the Jeep. The Outback is at the top of my list.

The 2024 outback xt is on the top of my list if i turn the Jeep in. I’m sure the Outback would be more comfortable though especially for a daily driver. We used to have a ‘13 outback but from what i’ve read it seems the ‘24 is a lot better all the way around including the CVT trans. Guess i’ll have to drive one.

We bought a '24 Outback Wilderness in September and absolutely love it. Actually cross shopped it with a Bronco. Clearly the Bronco is the better true off-roader, but since i have an '05 TJ for that, we wanted the best balance for road trips and back road exploring. Turned out to be possibly the best overall vehicle I've ever owned. Just does everything it's supposed to do extremely well. I was nervous about the CVT. I'm 41 and every vehicle I've owned before this was a manual. Truthfully its a great transmission. Does have that traditional CVT sensation when driving normally, but then acts like a typical auto when you get a bit heavy with the throttle. And the 8 ratios with the paddle shifters are legit in how they hold a gear/ratio until you pull paddle to shift.
@SPLITTINIMAGE10 ай бұрын
This comment makes me more confident in wanting to get an Outback wilderness this year. I’ve driven all manual cars up to this one as well with the exception of a 4Runner for a bit, but the gas mileage convinced me to trade it, this is when gas was nearly $5 a gallon for record. I’ve done a lot of research and they seem like great vehicles, like you, the CVT is my only worry, and I like that Subaru included a transmission cooler with it, so that should cut down on any heat issues and overall extend the transmissions life. And it’s funny you mention the bronco, I had a 23 Black Diamond trim on order but cancelled it due to the 4Runner’s horrible gas mileage and the bronco being just as bad
@darrens32510 ай бұрын
@SLOK20C2 you won't regret it. I also wanted something that would accommodate our 3 dogs, so a completely flat floor was important. Interestingly, the load floor is 3" longer than the Bronco. The Bronco offers more sq.ft due to its height, but the Outback has more floor space. And yes, both price and fuel cost made it impossible to choose the Bronco considering I didn't need this vehicle to go deep into the woods. I'm in Nova Scotia. I built a Big Bend Bronco with 4cyl, manual, only locking diff with 4.27 ratio, steel bumper and uplifter switches added as options, and it was $59,000 PLUS dealer fees here in Canada......soft top only and all. The Outback Wilderness with the hitch and a few other accessories I wanted was $48,000 WITH all dealer fees in. The Outback is a much better on-road daily, has substantially more amenities and is much more powerful than I would have imagined. Way more than enough power for the type of vehicle. Is much quicker than numbers suggest, which I assume is partly due to the lower gearing the Wilderness has. On top of all that, when you consider the Bronco burns about 35% more fuel it became a no-brainer for us. And on the fireroads and rough surfaces I've had it on, it has been amazing. Zero rattles and remarkably solid.

I feel like bitter Yoda. You don't know the dark side of cvt. But you will. You... will... Ask a tech about how serviceable the cvt is, which parts go bad first, etc. You'll love the answer. I had one asplode with 115k miles. The answer I got from my dealer: the cvt is a sealed unit, one unit, one price. No parts that are serviced. It's a full swap guaranteed and expected to be somewhat disposable as far as parts go. And only a shade over $3500 before labor. That said, I still ended up buying another Subaru. I just know to sell it at 100k this time.
@darrens3259 ай бұрын
@MLKusername I have heard the same thing to be honest. But truthfully, it's a vehicle and there's guaranteed to be major expenses at some point. We did buy the 160,000 KM power train warranty, and I will be keen on any preventative maintenance I can possibly do to help it last. As far as cost versus the fact that it's a CVT....I don't think it matters. I have a '05 Jeep TJ with the infamous 6-speed manual NSG370 with low mileage for the year at 220,000 KM (135 miles) I was quoted $7,500CDN to rebuild it. That's for the fork kit ($1,200), 4 synchro rings ($400 each), plus all associated parts such as bearings, seals, etc etc and labour. It's an old school manual and it's going to he pushing $8,000 quite possibly if I want it rebuilt properly vs taking a chance on a used unit. So as for cost, it's comparable. Just a matter of how long it lasts.

In my opinion, the Outback hasn’t been a “lifted wagon” since it’s 3rd generation (2005-2009). And even then, it was starting to look more like an suv/crossover. At that time, true lifted wagons included the Volvo XC70 and Audi AllRoad, with the Volvo V60 and V90 Cross Country and the Audi A4 Allroad being more modern versions. Especially when looking at the current generation, the Outback looks like a slightly squished SUV. Maybe I’m being picky, but it just doesn’t resemble a real wagon, lifted or not, at all.

People make a big deal about the CVT but it actually does a good job of keeping you in power.
@eskieman394811 ай бұрын
Yep - it sure does with the 2.4T engine. I have ridden in two Outbacks where the driver was whizzing, p*ssing & moaning about about how the car drove, can't get over 16mpg, and so on. I watched them drive for five minutes, and immediately saw the problem - they drove like jerks. STOMP on the gas, STAB the brakes, STOMP on the gas, cut people off, STAB the brakes, etc. If you're that type of driver, go get some Mazda with a six speed auto tranny or whatever. My '22 OB XT with the CVT does just fine - the trick is having a light foot, and let the transmission do it's thing. Result: My MPG easily runs right with the EPA numbers, and if you think I'm holding up traffic, driving like an old man, you are dead wrong. I move with or ahead of traffic on a regular basis.

Wilderness Edition is very nice, but a CVT in a car with that kind of power is a deal-breaking zonk for me. Doesn’t help that they’re asking Grand Cherokee money for it, either.

Would you not mind CVT in a Forester?
@kyleashdown5187 ай бұрын
@@JoeBuck-uc3bl I’m OK with them in the non-turbo Subarus, but the turbo models should have a torque converter. CVTs tend to have more reliability problems when connected to engines that have more power and torque

Dude loves some snacks! 🤣😂 Great review. Now I'm torn between this and the Touring XT.

I'm considering buying this car, the Outback Wilderness. Never owned a Subi before. Can anyone offer any info on common mechanical issues, reliability and ride feel with the turbo charged boxer 2.5L engine? I'm a Toyota guy and love the predictable reliability of the 3.5L 6cyl automatic. It's a 2009 Sienna w/245k, still runs like a champ. I've owned it for 11 yrs and have not had one mechanical issue, not one. Same motor, tranny, alternator, starter and timing chain. I know Subaru and Toyota have merged and I hope the Subaru is just as reliable. However I'm not 100% confident in the performance and reliability of the CVT and Boxer engine that's offered. If anyone has experience with this powertrain and vehicle post a comment. Thanks.

They don’t blow head gaskets anymore they do only come in an automatic but there is boost mode on the forester and outback, if you want a big screen get the outback but if you like the physical buttons get the forester the car should last up to 270,000 miles with standard maintenance and the green and blue paint scratches very easily so get a paint corrector and use it after every wash for the car

My 2024 has a wireless charger. Not sure if that is a dealer option but definitely available.

The subauru website does have an option for wireless charging on those vehicles but it does not come standard

The line between a raised up station wagon and a crossover is very blur. I got no problem if people call the outback a crossover cuz it really looks like one

My next vehicle I am definitely eyeballing an Outback Wilderness. Got to be inside one at a dealership and I loved it. The height clearance, the seats/driving wheel, the head room to accommodate my tall boyfriend. I tried building my own online and noticed there wasn’t features offered on the website that I seen on the outback in person. I really loved the custom rain guards that go above the windows, they even had one up top for the sunroof; soooo is that a feature I need to buy from a 3rd party website and personally install or does Subaru actually offer that? Also, I tried to fit my iPhone 11 in the wireless charging port below the massive touchscreen and it doesn’t not work. My phone is wayyyyy to big for the port and both my boyfriend and I noticed that if I were to put the vehicle from drive to park, I would be ramming into my phone because it sticks out so much from the port. Honestly, I would pass on the wireless charging port, so how big is that area if I don’t include that feature on the car??

Definately putting a pic of my first girl friend in there after watching this 😄 I have a 2022 outback wilderness and I dont see a lot of difference compared to this 2024. The ONLY thing I dont like bout my Wilderness is the remote key settings coz its autimatically set on AC. So even in the winter the car is cold until you get it any change the settings manually. I consulted my dealership they said the car was made like that...sucks

AC mode in the winter helps get ride of condensation - just set the temperature where you want it to be.

Go back to the AMC Eagle . That’s the modern Outback and Crosstrek. Love both those vehicles over any SUV.
