Earlier this year I bought a 2024 4Runner. Hated it. This week I traded it in for a 2025 OBW. Believe me when I say this is one of the best vehicles you can buy. You get the on road comfort with the exceptional off road capability. It’s the perfect in between. Not overpriced and the buying experience with Subaru was the best I’ve ever had. If you’re on the fence… go try one!!! You won’t be disappointed.

I’m sorry to hear that you felt the need to get out of the 4R so soon. I’ve also considered one of those, but I think if I did I would feel the same way in that to much was sacrificed especially regarding on road driving and comfort. I test drove a 4Runner TRD Pro before I bought my '22 OBW. Happy I went with a Subaru. The Toyota was worse on gas and it was a climb up n down which wouldn't work well with a car seat for the years to come.
@wildbill23c6 ай бұрын
I wasn't impressed with the 4Runner. I bought a 94 several years ago that had the 3L V6, gutless piece of crap that thing was, the only saving grace for it was it had the manual transmission so you could somewhat force it to get out of its own way. When my truck was in the shop for a week I got stuck with a 4Runner....even the 4L V6 is gutless, terrible fuel economy (worse than my 08 Tundra's 5.7L V8), ride quality was terrible, not sure why people think those things are so great, there's a lot of people that mistakenly fell for that Toyota hype and regretted it instantly.

Welcome to the Subaru side. I just got a 24 OBW a few weeks ago, coming from owning Subies for over 20 years. This is the best Subaru ever, and I would dare say this is the best car period! This is what I always wanted from Subaru. I have modified every Subaru that I have ever had, to make it do what I wanted. This is the first one that I am amazed, I just sit in it and it does what I wanted it to do from the get go. No more going off to some chops shop for a lift, no swapping tires the minute I get it for AT tires. I am blown away by the ride comfort, considering 0-60 in 5.8 seconds with AT tires and 9.5 inches of lift with a smooth ride my jaw is still on the floor.

Interesting. My wife and I have matching 2018 4Runner Limiteds and a 2003 S2000 (since new). We bought a 2017 3.6R Touring for our 16-year old son’s first car. Now, we are thinking of a new outback (probably a Touring XT, though maybe wilderness) now that our younger son will also need a vehicle (giving him a 4Runner, and we’ll drive the new Outback). I also bought a 2014 3.6R Limited for my in-laws. Love that flat six! Long story short, I find it interesting how many people cross-shop Outback’s and 4Runners, or own both.

I test drove an Outback Wilderness 2025 model the other day and was utterly baffled as to why they put such a low grade camera for both the front an rear. It seriously looked like a 240P camera (watch this video in 240P to see what it's like). I then test drove a 2025 Mazda CX-50 which seemed like a lot better quality all around. I'm still considering the Subarau, but it's things like that which make me question the overall quality.

Good review. My nephew has the 2019 non Turbo outback. I became very interested in the Subaru line when I went for a ride with him. Very comfortable interior and spacious. I ultimately went for the 2024 Forester Touring as it was easier for me to get in and out without bumping my head. Overall, very impressed with both the Outback and Forester. I must be a good salesperson because both my niece and Goddaughters son purchased Foresters in the last few months. As to the microphone quality overall it was very good. The only change that I noticed was when you did the 0-60 run. It was a bit tinny.

I got the same car but 2024- extremely worth every penny. Had all windows tinted here in South Carolina… went with Xpel Plus ceramic nano tint.. which blocks 99% UVs. I went with 70% windshield, 20% front sides, 45% back sides and 35% hatch…. Which gives a even flow of tint with exception to windshield. Good review. I looked at the Wilderness edition in 2023 when I decided to buy the Onyx edition instead. Living in New England, we don't have a lot of open land to off-road, If I lived out west where they have thousands of square miles of BLM land, I might have gone with the Wilderness. Since most of my travel is highway, the Onyx fit my requirements perfectly. I love the Startex interior as it wears better than the leather that was in my 2019 Outback Ltd that I traded in for the 2023 Onyx. I now have 54K miles on my 2023 and have made several long distance roadtrips to TX and FL and the 2.5L engine has been fantastic. I find the Subaru Outback to be very comfortable on long roadtrips. It is on its second set of tires and I service my Outback at my local Subaru dealer every 5K miles. I have had no issues with my Outback. There are three features I dislike, one is the auto start/stop which I shutoff every time I start the car, the Lane Assist which I also shutoff and the wireless charger which seems to cook my iPhone 14. I've been driving a manual for the last 30 years, so please help me understand. Is it normal for the RPM's to go 5500 before it switches gears? is he in manual mode and didn't switch? or is it a CVT thing? If he didn't punch it hard and drove normal, would it change gears automatically before 5500? Thanks,
@AutomotiveAnonymous2084 ай бұрын
Yeah, these under normal acceleration ‘fake’ shifts at a much lower RPM. Under full throttle from a stand still they’ll usually hold peak horsepower RPM for the next acceleration time. That way it doesn’t lose horsepower or boost pressure with shifting a few times under heavy acceleration.

A lot to like here, but a Pity this '25 Outback is using the older Gen 3 Eyesight while the other '25 Outbacks have moved on to Gen 4.

Thanks! I hope to find a 25 Base model soon. But if not I’ve done at least one Base in the past (it might have been a 2023, I can’t remember). But because it’s an older video from me I’m not sure I’d recommend watching it haha. 🤪

You can't tint the forward window. It's a written law as you have to be able to be seen by other drivers.
@AutomotiveAnonymous2086 ай бұрын
Yeah, I don’t think that’s legal at least in most states. I don’t like windshield tint anyways, especially those horizontal 4-7” bars that some people do at the top of the glass. 🤦♂️

What's your overall opinion of Subaru's CVT?
@AutomotiveAnonymous2084 ай бұрын
I don’t mind them, the modern ones are very smooth. I just don’t like that they cost 8-10k to replace compared to an old Chevy truck that’s a 2-3k transmission replacement. Because of that price tag I wouldn’t own one outside of powertrain warranty. But for context usually don’t keep anything outside of warranty since labor rates are somehow now $100-200/hour and I’ve had enough car repairs in the past.

How's that huge touchscreen? Is it still glitchy?

what's the longevity on Subarus? I noticed almost all of them have CVT trans
@AutomotiveAnonymous2086 ай бұрын
I honestly have no idea haha. From what I see on the forums and hear about it appears the engines are bulletproof and very well sorted out. And 99% of people have no issues with their CVT. The problem is ‘if’ the CVT does fail outside of warranty it’s 2x the price it should be to replace. I have no idea why. With that said there’s plenty of people with 200-300k miles on their Subarus. 🤷♂️🤪

For reference, I still have my 2011 Outback Limited 3.6R. Bought it used in 2015 with 40k miles and it now has 213k miles and still running well. Since it's hit 200k, I need to replace some minor stuff and am starting to get some undercarriage rust. But also, I got it when I was in my 20s and didn't take great care of it. I bet if I had, it would be in even better shape

Full tank of gas with a 0-60?
@AutomotiveAnonymous2086 ай бұрын
Yup! But horrible overall air quality and DA. Turbo engines are still down in power, just not as bad as an NA engine. My best time ever in my own personal OBW was a 6.29 true time or 6.03 without roll out. It was on a 40 degree day, but DA was still over 3,000’ above sea level. This low 7s was probably about the worst one I’ve seen haha.

Im still looking for a new car, but my eye is focused on a 2025 Camry now not the Outback xt. Because of the gas mileage! can you do a review on xse camry?
@AutomotiveAnonymous2086 ай бұрын
I understand that, it’s nice to get really good MPG. I actually did an impromptu driving video of a slightly used hybrid Camry a couple months ago. Very cool vehicle. I’ve not established a Toyota connection yet so I don’t have access to the 2025s, I apologize for that. I’d hope to make more connections, but I still have a full time job/career so I don’t have as much time as I’d like to film and travel even more. 🤷♂️🤪

Why would Subaru use a CVT, then program it to have simulated gear shifts? It's the dumbest thing to do. You get all the drawbacks of a CVT without the benefits of having infinite gear ratio.
@jaumeprimerelhipster4 ай бұрын
It improves acoustic comfort. Noise perception by humans is complex and subjective perception can be substantially effected by a number of factors. Subaru has determined that most people find it more enjoyable to have a variable pattern noise than a fixed pattern one.
@toddb93017 күн бұрын
We had a 2013 Impezza with a CVT that didn't have the feeling of shifting gears. It was kinda difficult to drive smoothly because the CVT was continuously adjusting . I suspect there were enough complaints that Subaru programmed the CVT to act like a geared transmission.

The craftsmanship is very bad.... fit-and-finish is terrible.... the plastic trim that seals the windshield is lose and can easily be peeled off.... I went to my local Subaru to check out the Outback, and I didn't like the fit-and-finish so I just left the dealer and take my $45,000 to buy a slightly used CPO BMW...
@jaumeprimerelhipster4 ай бұрын
I wouldn't buy a Subaru built in the US. Part of the appeal of the brand is its excellent craftsmanship at their Japanese factory.
