Is the 50/50 Ohtani Set Awesome Or A Topps Cash Grab?

Topps has recently sold out their newest set on Topps.com. This time it is a commemorative set of Shohei Ohtani reaching the 50/50 club. Packs were $25 and boxes were $240, and Topps seemed to sell a ton of these boxes due to the inclusion of an Ohtani game used logoman auto from the game where he broke the 50 home run and 50 sotlen bases mark. There was speculation that this card would be added into another set like Topps Update or Topps Chrome Update similar to what they did with the rookie debut patch autos in 2023, but instead Topps released a stand alone Ohtani set. In this video the Spitballin' team breaks down their thoughts on this set and if it is a good buy or just another cash grab.

As a major Ohtani collector, I love this. The cards will easily be 250k or higher. I would rather have two is the grail cards than the single 50/50 ball.

What product isn't a "cash grab." Topps is a sports card company and everyone is surprised and upset when they make "too many" cards. Topps is literally doing what a lot of us asked for a long time ago, i.e. making the hobby more accessible. I get that investing is a big part of the industry now, but I think this is a win win. Do what you enjoy and don't be influenced by people who are constantly negative and criticize every product.

Bought one box. My daughter is an Ohtani collector, so I give her all the Ohtanis I get. She has two rookies now. If I pull the Black card, it will go to her as well and she can do what she wants with it when she turns 18.

I collect Ohtani but I can’t afford any of the big stuff. The most I’ve ever spent on a card is around $500 (for a Mookie Betts WBC superfractor). The fact that this box gives me a fair chance to pull an auto or a superfractor is really appealing, considering I’d never be able to own one otherwise. I think this product is probably made for collectors in my position. I also think a lot of the collectors we see on KZbin or the breakers or the dealers forget how most of us are just hobbyists that collect our favorite cards, but don’t put even a fraction of the cash into the hobby as you who are professionals. This kind of set is perfect for most of us.

Everyone is saying "cash grab." It's no more a cash grab than Series 1, Topps Chrome, Bowman sapphire, or anything else. Topps is a company that makes and sells baseball cards. That's it. None of that means you have to love an Ohtani set out of nowhere, but I don't see the difference between this and Topps Now or anything else that Topps makes and sells. One thing I do like about it is that there are massive pulls possible from a box just north of $200. That's not typically the case with most hobby boxes. Yes, 99.99% of boxes are going to have nothing in them, but that's true of most high-end hobby boxes as well. Just my two cents. Thanks for the great video, gents.

Chris here - there were 10 Acuna 40/70 inserts in series 2 this year. Maybe topps felt like they left some money on the table? I mean I'd rather these been inserts in another product as well. Novelty standalone sets like this - you nailed it 99.9% of boxes will not have much value inside.

Scott I loved when you mentioned the Fleer 1961 Ted Williams set. In the 90’s, fleer bought back 2 of each card in the set, and had Ted sign each one. They presented Ted’s lifelong manager with a complete set, and inserted redemption cards into their products across that year. I have one of those autographed cards, and it’s of Ted’s favorite baseball moment. When he hit a home run in the 1941 All Star Game, and Joe DiMaggio was there at home plate to congratulate him. One of my favorite piece in my collection. And yes, I did buy some one of this Ohtani 50/50 product. It’s a gamble for sure, but it’s baseball history.

What a surprise. All sold out on the Topps website and listed on eBay for x2 the initial price. That sums up this hobby in a nutshell. Let's all make a quick buck. There's nothing really wrong with it but it just gets exhausting after awhile. On another note I like this. It reminds me of what they did with Sosa and Mcgwire with Pacific in the 90s. They had cards of each Home Run they got during the chase. The downside of it for me is aren't people going to know what pack the potential Dynasty card will be in? The card is 5 times as thick as the base cards and they're all sold out so there goes the randomness out the window. They will all be searched by all these damn flippers. As far as the lottery ticket conversations. That's everything now in this hobby. We chase high schoolers in Bowman for the chance at striking it rich if they end up being good. We pay $1,000/box on Dynasty for one single card where 90% of the boxes you're going to get hosed on. It's all a Casino at this point. I'm not saying the hobby still isn't fun and I'm not here to judge but that's just how I see it at this point for the majority of it.

Chris here - i hate the casino feel that teh hobby seems to be moving towards as well. That's all these boxes are - just shots at one of those dynasty autos. Nothing else will hold much value going forward. It's a novelty set. Cant compare to his rookie autos. And yes, you're right to be concerned about boxes like these moving forward. After they come out in december, I'd bet a lot of them will be scanned for autos. It's sad.

I got a 10 pack box. It doesn't ship until after Christmas, so pretty sure they had the designs mocked up, but I doubt they were printed. I am curious how many of the cards were printed, since it is not a Topps Now, there isn't a # based on demand. That Logo Man will be a life changing card someone.

This is a $240 lottery ticket. It's a chase for one (or three?) particular card(s), pure and simple. And that's depressing. Topps puts out things like this built around a single card too often. Ignoring that, I think it's bad design. It looks like it's just something they threw together over the course of a few hours. Honestly reminds me of things like the 50th/100th anniversary things that Disney has done over the last few milestones. They should have taken the time to design something iconic for this. It's a rare opportunity to do something that's fit for what is now the single rarest feat in baseball. Also, I think the base cards of each stolen base/home run card "stolen base #32" won't be particularly desirable. I don't mean for resale. I mean that people won't particularly care. There will be some set collectors for this set out there for sure (I may end up being one of them), but that's much easier to do just buying the complete set for $20 on ebay later on. I don't think $240 is an accessible price for this. I think it should have been $150, at most. One parallel and 50 (?) base cards is pretty sad for $240. I think releasing after taking the time to design up something nicer would have been better. Or even make it an insert set for a flagship product, which we'll likely get anyway. There's a reason this didn't sell out for like 12 hours on Topps.com. Many of them. But, I guess we'll see.

I think Topps needs to be real careful, because they are flirting with running an illegal lottery. You could easily argue they are “selling” a useless product to cover a lottery, especially when it’s multiple copies of the same card. Different than just a pack of baseball cards.

Stolen bases are overrated. Teams don’t care about a catcher’s ability to throw out runners as long as they can hit. Bases are bigger, sliding gloves lengthen the runners’ hand, etc. Stolen bases won’t translate to long term hobby value in my opinion

I had to decide between buying the Ohtani box or the Texas Rangers in a Bowman chrome hobby break. Went with the Rangers and ended up hitting a Braylin Morel true orange auto /25. Couldn’t be happier.

2006 topps did the Mantle home run set, also same year with bonds, never really took off except maybe for set collectors. Maybe buy some after the hype dies down like in the middle of the winter. I have the Ohtani 2017 first Topps Now card (a few) and in PSA 10 sells for around 100.00 dollars. Too much production is always bad for any player.

Hi- I have a topic for you that never gets talked about but concerns me and should concern you. I know no one wants to think about the environmental impact of our hobby but we should and try to promote change. For every graded card out there, 2 penny sleeves, 1-2 card savers and a plastic slab were used. Not to mention, if you bought a single to get graded, the bubble wrap, packaging, shipping cross country at least two times is really impactful. Tens of millions of plastic slabs a year, 75 percent eventually worthless is something we all should consider. When I open a box, I can’t believe the amount of waste that accumulates not to mention the commons which end up in the trash eventually. The card companies don’t care and show no signs of addressing the problem. They encase crappy cards in oversized slabs, put packs within packs and print to the moon. I know it’s taboo to talk about but I feel guilty creating such waste and the companies could begin to make small changes if this issue is talked about by influencers like you guys. Obviously, I know the philosophy and reasoning of doing so, but personally, I need to buy the product, have it in hand, rip it, see how it engages the community as a whole, and quite simply, my level of excitement and enjoyment around it, or any other emotions I may or may not have once it hits the shelves. What's interesting is that if you put the odds of 1:10 packs for a parallel, and you get the parallel print runs, it comes out to 48,200 boxes. Add in the short prints, and you likely get 50,000 boxes (500,000 packs). This feels pretty deliberate to add another "50" into the print. It's around $12,000,000 of free money for Topps. With 50,000 boxes, you're hitting around Flagship Update hobby box territory. These base cards, and even most of the blue parallels /150 are not going to be anywhere worth $5.

Way too many Ohtani cards out there. I'm not sure its a good thing since it could make his other cards more valuable, or it could just water down everything. Topps is going way overboard here, but people will say they are "stupid" not to cash in on Ohtani, however, they should think about the collectors that buy their product.

But I think it would be historic and memorable to rip one for an Ohtani fan who is not necessarily a card collector. I totally agree with you guys in terms of audience not being "kids" but I personally did buy some to share with my kids, their cousins and their friends....even if I break most or all of what I bought and keep the more rare cards I am sure the kids will love any of these cards -and they are collectible now and later IMO

Yes Fantastics/Topps are printing lottery tickets and good for them because there is a market demand for it. As a collector first investor second i have the choice not to buy. I will not being buying. It is cool. Will 2nd year - 5 year Ohtani cards be devalued? Yes i agree. Maybe one day the market will grow and treat different year of ohtani cards as vintages. Wine for example is petty much the same yet some years/vintages are worth more than others.

devaluing your cards future potential has nothing to do with topps profits today. topps has to make money as product is released and more releases means more profits. from a buisness standpoint it makes total sense, i think. at least until you find the limit of peoples tolerance. then pull back just a little and let it ride for a while

Time to retire “for the kids” and “lottery ticket.” Opening packs has always been the sports equivalent of a scratch off. And judging by the kids at card shows and their Zion cases and trade up challenges, they have zero interest in the cheap stuff that has even less of a chance to keep any value.

If everyone that bought this set turns around and resells to breakers then everyone makes money 100% so I’d say it’s a win win unless you open it. I’d rather buy a break spot in a case break of this than open it out right. Let’s be honest we all know the big cards are going to be pulled by breakers anyway

That's because everyone sells there boxes and packs,start saving to buy them so you can open them . The breakers job is buy the boxes and open them win or lose they get payed . Be the lil guy that want to win

Got fooled by the Jrod set and won’t get fooled again. I think it could be a fun idea but they won’t put the effort in that’s needed. Cards have huge borders and the inserts aren’t interesting.

Chris here - this would be my concern as well. Though the 3 month wait time makes me hopefully that Topps will try. Long term, just not sure these cards will be anything more than a novelty - outside of those very few dynasty black cards.
