Nice test. The base model Mac mini can handle a lot more stress on Logic. I am pretty sure that has to do with the optimization of Apple's DAW running on Apple silicon. It would be an interesting video to compare Logic and Ableton on the same Mini.
@JohnSHigham3 күн бұрын
Ableton and Logic are 2 of the least optimised DAWs out there. Reaper, Cubase and Pro Tools all take full advantage of the efficiency cores. Apples own DAW doesn’t. If you watch James Zhan “M4 Pro vs M3 Pro vs M2 Pro vs M1 Pro” it shows this to be true. It’s just plain embarrassing for users of FL Studio and Studio One. They perform the worst out of all of the DAWs tested. Given the higher number of efficiency cores over performance cores on the M4, the differences will be even wider.

I would say Im using Logic with Maschine and Kontrol and Amplitube/Tonex as well as all Toontack, live with my electric acoustic and 2 mics when we play live, and Ozone when mixing, on an M1 Air.. in low latency mode. With no glitches at all. So I would say yes its powerful enough to do what you do. Now I can not slap Ozone on the master without massive lag, which is nomal for Ozone on the master.
@zeuslgn2 күн бұрын
If you're gonna slap in more ram and storage, the price sans edu discount doubles to $1200 which is just $400 shy of tbe M4 Pro with the same ram and storage which might be worth it if you really need that much extra horsepower. Otherwise, standard M4 should be fine for most.
@neilloughran4437Күн бұрын

If you are starting out in music production, just buy a base M4 model. They are more powerful than the most maxed out Mac Pro's only 8 years ago!! The base model M4 Mac mini is totally enough for almost everyone for pro music production. I have made many albums on a 2020 M1 Macbook Air. I don't use many sound libraries, mostly audio, but some of the albums are 30 tracks of simultaneous audio with loads of plugins. Only a few times has the computer complained. Being an Air its 100% quite, so i can record with it in the room with the quietest of situations. The M4 base models are 30% ish' more powerful than the M1 MAX Macs!!!! 256GB internal hard drive is a bit small, and i do have a 1TB internal drive in the Air, but its no problem managing space, when you finish an album just store it on 2 external drives.

In all seriousness, this thing should have no issues running Ableton. The fact that I can do that at 128 samples is nuts. Unless tracking vocals, I always produce at 1024 samples. Rarely 512. So at that sample rate, it should have no issues. I used to produce Edm on my 2015 mbp and that thing didn’t even stutter with 40 plus tracks loaded with kontakts and stuff. I don’t need it and I’m considering getting one of these haha
