Is the AMG E53 Coupe an AMG Too Many? | TEST DRIVE

The AMG line-up never ceases to amaze with a vast range of new models appearing including the new 53 designation engines featuring in many models, including the E Class Coupe. The AMG E53 Coupe sits beneath the 63 and 63S variant, on the platform shared with the CLS and AMG GT 4-door, but how does it all stack up?
With a 3.0l turbo inline-6 with EQ Boost, it offers 435hp and 520nm before the additional 22hp and 250nm that come from the mild hybrid system. The Coupe is one of 4 bodystyles available on the E Class platform; Saloon, Estate, Coupe and Convertible, with the new CLS and AMG GT 4-door based on the same chassis. Likewise the 53 engine is more potent than the biturbo V6 found in the '43' and less so than the biturbo V8 found in the '63' and '63S' models. Ultimately though, is the AMG badge now being used on too many different cars, does this model deserve to wear it?

This car actually makes a lot of sense. We life in a world where fuel gets more expensive by the minute, and in some country’s (the Netherlands, China, Sweden...) cars with big engines get particular penalty’s whereby the prices between a V8 and a v6 can differ greatly. I know in the Netherlands the price difference between a G63 an G65 is ~€130.000 and a big part (around 70%) of that money is the special emission tax.(something the government makes up) Price difference between a E53 and a E63. (the first price is in the Netherlands, fiscal value. Second price Germany, fiscal value.) E53: €115k(NL) 79K (DE) Price difference: 55K (NL) 31K (DE) E63: €170k(NL) 110K (DE) This proves why in some country’s this kind of car makes sense, and we haven’t even talked about insurance, petrol and road tax. of course we all want to drive the V8/V10 and V12’s but that is just not realistic. Luckily we all got shmee to show us the ‘Supercar dream’😉 Thanks Tim! (Edit: and let’s face it, 435HP is way more than you can use on public roads😜)

The E53 Estate is one of the best cars you can buy right now. So many "petrolheads" think compromises in a car are a bad thing. But they're just not. The balance just has to be right. And this drivetrain strikes the perfect balance between being practical, fun, fast, and efficient. Driving a modern 63 AMG with over 600 HP on open roads is rediciulous fun. It's also rediciulously expensive to run and way to uncomfortable to live with every day. I really love these AMG or BMW M "light" models, since they are, in a way, the true successors of the AMGs and BMW Ms and RSs of the naughties. If you ever wanted to own something that's as fun as a E60 M5 without the terrible reliability or fuel economy, and a gearbox you can actually use on public roads, well, now you can. But I guess you could also cry about an AMG that has "only" 430HP. Just hilarious.

good comment you made. In particular that might be acctually the best solution for the problem. Just call them AMG light on the badge. So the true AMG 63 spirit is saved just for the hardcore versions and yet you have distinguished the rather everyday AMGs from normal Mercedes.

have you heard of brand dilution? When you have too many AMG models it takes away from the specialness of the AMG moniker... it just becomes a model within the range as opposed to being a special series. It also means AMG doesn't mean as much if any car can be an AMG, it dilutes the philosophy of AMG as well

9:22 the lane assist / steering assist feature, it's not a small thing, it's not insignificant... The amount it reduces your fatigue, especially arm fatigue is just fantastic! I've never heard anyone else comment on it, but it really means you can take 90% of the steering effort out of the driving experience. Cruise control let us rest our legs, cruise distance control took the brain effort our of freeway and city braking ans speed modulation, steering assistance has afforded both, more brain time and restful arms on a long drive, especially on long straight roads, but even on the twisty autobahn. Super effective (to 160kph). I was driving between Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Cologne with the weight of one finger on the steering wheel, 100% predictable (within expectations), 100% confidence. So much extra brain time to observe the traffic and give yourself "space". Genuine stress reduction. Even though the MB driving assistance does drive somewhat like a German.

Merc has a long History of Absolutely Great inline 6 Cylinder Engines since God knows wen, they never had V6's then from the 2000's they introduced V6 into their line up, now the E53 is back to the inline 6 configuration. Is the inline 6 in your opinion or whoever is reading better than the V6?

But it fits the bill in terms of what it has against the competition. It’s not diluted at all with AMG 45/63/63S/65 being the pinnacle of the model range. The 35/43/53 range makes up a gap that Audi and BMW already have with the M lites and S model range. It rounds off the range rather than diluting it. Proud to have the smaller range with a bigger name!

The E53 as a car is very well made and certainly lives up to the Mercedes moniker however I certainly do feel that there are too many AMG models in the line up and especially with the arrival of the 53 according to me the 43 should be eliminated or integrated into the normal Mercedes lineup. The E53 Coupe is one of the most beautiful cars in the AMG lineup. But i do agree that all AMG’s should be at 63 level.
