I’ve been hoping you’d do a starter set comparison. I like that you touch upon things a season painter does as second nature, but a newbie would seriously benefit from knowing. Plus these videos always put me in a great mood 😂

GW really needs to work on that starter brush. Like any random Chinese made taklon brush you can get at your hobby store for a dollar or two is better than it. It's really baffling how bad they made it.

I was lucky when I got my starter set 2 years ago. There was a 'sable' brush (definitely natural hair, but not sure it's Kolinski) in mine. That was the standard I came to expect from G.W. brushes. I was very disappointed when I got my wife to pick me another brush up from the local G.W. shop. I asked for the same brush from the starter set, but it was not the brush I expected 😂

No way. You lucked out!! Must have been an error surely! :)

So basically the Army Painter starter set does what the GW set does not. Gives you everything you need to start. I have never understood why you would have a starter set WITHOUT primer. it is a very basic item for painting.

Insane isn't it?! It's literally one of the first htings you need!

After seeing you use a Hawk brush I ordered a couple...and was so impressed ordered lots of them 😝. 6 x Hawk brushes cost less than one W+N s7 and are just as good if not better. So thanks for that golden brush nugget Alex 👌👏👍😘

Paint the included miniature too! I picked this starter set up and just primed so far. Having trouble putting paint to plastic though in fear of mucking it up. Would be inspirational to see someone who knows what they're doing to give it a go. Thanks for another great video!

I’m a convert to fanatic and Speedpaint. This set is incredible it covers the essentials well. Reminds me of the old citadel starter sets from the 90’s.

Quick tip: try base coating your gold with brown. Different shades of brown can change the colour of the gold you get.

@alexpaintstinythings5 күн бұрын
But where would you have got your space marines eh?! - All good, these sets are reasonably affordable for what you get inside - worth picking up IN ADDITION to the GW starter set :)

Very nice review
@NikkiAnnMarie4 күн бұрын
Nice video, but I think you'd be better off comparing this set to the paints + tools sets that GW sell - this is very similar to the AoS starter paint set, and while that doesn't come with a free mini, if you're new you can get a free one from any (official) warhammer shop so it works out about the same aside from the starter brush lol
@frostedbutts43404 күн бұрын
Yeah it's a few bucks more but you get 13 paints instead of 6 Not my pick of colors, but it's a good start.
@alexpaintstinythings4 күн бұрын
You're not wrong - I probably should. I don't have that set so was just comparing the Army Painter set to what I had already - great point though, the Citadel Paints/tools set is probably on par with this if you ignore the paintbrush :D

I'm gonna look into the colours and see if I can find a way to get a box to review :)

Don't waste your money on any pure synthetic brush, they all suck, even more expensive ones from art stores. The best, cheap brush range ive found so far is the rosemary and co sable blend series 401. These synthetic and real hair blend brushes are great all round, large size selection, and very inexpensive. i bought mine for roughly $5 Canadian each at my LGS.

I’ll have a look but I’m not sure. I know the Squidmar dudes have curated sets of paint which are great (and some are improved vs the regular bottles you can buy outside of the sets) but they’re just paint and an exclusive mini, no brushes or primer or any other kit. Worth looking into though!
@Nyoteng6 күн бұрын
But the brush-on primer was no different to the base blue paint they make you put on the ultra marines to prime them. I am confused about why would it be any better.
@rasmusolesen53076 күн бұрын
Primer is designed to stick better to plastic than non-primer. So it acts as a bond between the miniature and the other paints. Depending on the miniature it will make your paint easier to work with and less prone to "falling off" after drying.
@ThucNguyen-rc7bj6 күн бұрын
Brush-on primer stick better on the mini than citadel base layer paint.
@alexpaintstinythings6 күн бұрын
Yup as others have said primer is designed to stick to plastic (and other materials) better than regular acrylic paint :)

Gotcha, thanks everyone

I am curious what it actually is that creates the hooks on the end of the brush over time? Does anyone know?
@alexpaintstinythings6 күн бұрын
It’s because the brush is synthetic fibres. I don’t know what the actual process is but it doesn’t happen with natural fibres. If you find out let me know!!

I take it as my civic duty to be the person in the comments to answer the question no one else dares: to the best of my broad but shallow 40K knowledge, space marines do not, in fact, get aroused. Except maybe the Emperor's Children, but that's Slaanesh territory and honestly you're a braver man than I if you paint a Slaaneshi's nether regions.
