A huge mistake a lot of novice painters make is assuming that good paint jobs require buying a specific set of a citadel paints and following instructions like you're baking. That's far from the reality. Most miniature paint brands will do, and the good results of a paint job come from technique and theory, not linear steps. The "you need these products" idea is a lie Games Workshop has bottled and sold to the community. If you want to actually be a good painter, watch a video on color theory, identify shadows, midtones and highlight colors you want in your mini (ie, do you want warm shadows or cold shadows? Warm lights or cold lights? Or neutral?), and practice your layering, thinning paint, and brush control, which is the foundation of all miniature painting skills.

@@darrinscott6612 As a newish painter who has learned the hard way that green is green no matter the funny name on the bottle this is true. But from my point of view it's not Games Workshop that has pushed that idea, but rather I actually bought a lot of my paints because a lot of youtube "how to paint" guides told me that's the color they work with. I think just telling people you can get close approximations for equal effect goes far.

@nozone587 күн бұрын
This was the exact box i got just last week and painted over the weekend as my first ever mins of any kind! So if you want fresh review from a beginner, here you go! I don't know how about others, but after deciding to order this in order to try out a new hobby, i went deep into research. That was highly overwhelming. Everyone started on about, you need this kit, you need this primer, don't do that, use this method... You get the idea. After a lot of thinking and not wanting to sink over like 40 quid all in all in my first painting, i ended up getting some cheap make up brushes for slathering on the base coat and a hobby knife, to clean the edges. For any first timer reading this, don't make the mistake i did, get the primer, my painting started flaking already when i was painting it. Anyways, i got it home, cut them out, which took me over an hour itself. I then looked up many guides on how to paint, but finally found the original guide from games workshop on this specific set, so instead of experimenting, i just followed that. Put the blue on the base in 3 thinner layers, which was good to at least familiarize myself with how the paint behaves in cracks and crevices of the mini. Then moving on the black for the gun and the satchels on the back. That progression was great, since it was only around the second color that i started to get the hang of mixing the paint on the pallet to get the consistency i wanted, and working on the small handle points and the pouches on the back helped me to learn how to approach details on the mini. Then it finally came to the metallic paints, that's where the first detail was done on the shoulder pads, where i basically got the metallic paint everywhere and needed to do about 10 thousand touchups afterwards with the blue to cover it all up. Only at the white while doing the emblems on the shoulder pads did i realize that you can put the brush to the mini on these flatter surfaces with extended edges on the side, which allowed the paint to nicely fill out the emblem, but also took a few tries. With the technic paint, i was slighty annoyed at myself, since i didnt have any tools for that either, seriously, get at least the wooden coffee sitrer. I ended up getting the technic paint on the boots of the spacemarines, which made it look like they had big chucnks of dirt stuck to their suits. A tip, don't stress if this happens, i waited for it to dry out, then it was easier to remove and the rest i just repainted. Overall, id say the experience was pretty fun all around. As a first timer, probably the top 3 things id change is add a primer to this set, since i had the blue base coat flaking several times during painting, add a better brush, or in the least, two brushes, and make the second one more disposable and bigger, to apply the primer / base coat and finaly, id add some clear way on the box, or maybe with a paper in the box, to direct people to the original guide on how to paint this exact set, to avoid overwhelming new players. But other than that, it was great, and im already doing research on what army id like to strive towards painting and eventualy playing properly

@@alexpaintstinythings I'm about to purchase the "Introductory set" which comes with only five paints. What other paints would you recommend to make the Ultra marines look better, and what brush would you recommend?
@alexpaintstinythings2 ай бұрын
@@quorthorn7945 If you're happy shopping at Warhammer, try a nice vibrant red for the eye lenses, a couple of browns (dark and light) for the leather pouches, a silver for the gun and nuln oil (a black-ish wash) for metallic parts. A mid-grey (mechanicus standard) would help with gun highlights and a lighter blue would help with edging the armour - you could even look at a dark blue wash for the armour, but that's harder to muck about with I think. As for brushes, Citadel's not-starter brushes are OK to begin with, and I'd say a couple of brushes will serve you well for most of the work (a small for detail and larger for other jobs) and then a brush for applying shade and a drybrush if you want to buy more might help. I don't use Citadel paints or brushes much any more, so hard to give you exact names, but I hope this helps!

I started dry brushing everything, with a 5mm flat brush. Start with a black base coat, then dry brush everything blue, then dry brush the gold highlights on the armour, then dry brush the gun with silver, the mag with gold, any flesh etc. Dry brush, dry brush, dry brush, and the model takes on a sort of cell shaded quality that somehow transcends the primitive paint job to give it its own sort of art style if that makes sense. Like how some old games still look good because their art style is timeless, thats sort of what my minis have, and I'm basing that on the reaction of others, including randos who don't owe me any pleasantries. I'm happy with them, and the best bit is, it is a very quick painting method.

To beginners, pop it toys are really nice to use for paint. I do have a wet pallet but alot of the time i use the pop it toy instead. You can dilute citadel paints with water. Keep some cheap bad brushes for mixing colours. Also good for drybrushing and metallics that eats nice brushes for breakfast. For scraping mold lines i prefer a dull hobbyknife, a sharp one may cut into the plastic model if not carefull enough. An old nail polisher can be used to smoothen surface. But a sharp cutters is very helpful, less scraping. A cut in halv pet bottle with texture is great for cleaning brushes. You can strip the paint of a model with IPA, fill a small cup, add a modell and swirl until paints coming off, clean under water with a toothbrush. These tips are maby not for proffesional painters, but for hobby painters, as it will save you some money to pick up more models to paint.

welp, I'm forty-something and just picked up my first 10-marine box and some random blue, gold, black and like.. dark green paints to have something to play around with with my 6 and 7 year old kids. So far they love it. And my youtube is becoming increasingly filled with WH40K...

dont paint in mass for your first minis. pick one mini and use it as the sacrificial lamb. Try different paints and techniques and see what you get. then you can always wash it off in rubbing alcohol and repaint later. trust the process

This was exactly my experience this year... after many years away from tabletop games I wanted to paint some Eldar guardians and bought a citadel starter box (the one with some colors, a brush, clippers and a tool for removing sprue)... it was so frustrating to try to do edges with that sad brush... in the end I had to buy so much more than originally intended. ...Nice work here with far less tools!

Thank you - yeah I'm planning a video on "what you actually need to start off" so that people get a better idea of the investment - it can be an expensive hobby (although I guess it odesn't HAVE to be) but knowing what that investment is ahead of time can help people I guess. Out of interest, did you stick with it, or did the experience put you off?

I'd probably "prime" it with a mix of blue and black (aka dark blue)... it wouldn't need to be an even coat. Then I'd go in with full blacks where needed, and then apply white or light blue or light gray on the bright areas and edges (maybe even zenithal drybrush). Finally I'd go i with the regular blue (and gold) as a sort of layer colour, reducing the amount of passes needed as I find it absolutely dreadful to do multiple passes with the same colour. Even if the pre-highlights are a bit messy that tends to be played down by the layering. Then a single thin highlight pass on the blue at some select spots. The texture paint is a bit of a waste in this set... a skintone-ish red/brown would've been more useful, yeah. The bases could've been sculpted rocks or deck plates. Smearing sand paint around is kind of annoying and easily ruins/gunks up the brush and paint water. Personally I'm quite okay with a shoddy brush as long as I'm not freehanding heraldics or doing eyes. It's possible to get to most of the highlight edges with the edge of the brush so a great tip is not always needed.

Oh man, I WISH I had a brush as good as that when I first started. I had some awful brushes that came in a 15 pack for $10. In no way did any of them come to a point, and I had to paint red last because it wouldn't wash completely out of the bristles no matter what I did, and would tint every later color that night red. I was painting Sisters of Battle for my first army. I was still super proud of my minis!
