Do we gain assurance of salvation by looking to our faith? By looking to our works? From one of our live events, W. Robert Godfrey, Derek Thomas, and Stephen Nichols point Christians toward the true source of assurance.
Do you have a biblical or theological question? We invite you to ask Ligonier at ask.ligonier.org/

i struggle with assurance every day. it’s all a fight to believe that Christ paid for my sin and credited righteousness to me. i often do get it backwards and look at my works to try to find assurance, but my works will never be perfect. anything good in me must flow from Christ

I definitely feel you. They had some very truthful things to say in this video so listen for sure. You’re not alone on this many many people have a hard time with this including myself. Read first John and pray to the Lord. He really does love you and proved it. He also cares about you currently even as of today. So pray knowing these things and you are not alone Be encouraged today

Works show our faith. That is, you turn your life around and live in Jesus. We just do what is good, what is right, what is Godly. During the time of the dictatorship of the Soviet Union, Christians were found out by their honestly, humanity and hard work. For some, totally alone, or seeming to be alone, they were brought to salvation by read confiscated Bibles from smugglers trying to get them inside the Soviet Union. Non-believers were converted to Christianity simply reading the Word of God, the Bible. Any good border guard would know to keep five and turn in give Bibles. You could sell your five on the black market. No, you are not saved by works. But works will find you out. We just can't help it. We are new men and women in Christ Jesus! Amen!

As Tozer said "Faith is the least self-regarding of the virtues. It is by its very nature scarcely conscious of its own existence. Like the eye which sees everything in front of it and never sees itself, faith is occupied with the Object upon which it rests and pays no attention to itself at all." Works is all about you wheras faith is all about Christ!

Pastor Chris Gordon, Escondido URC How The Confessions Help with Sanctification The confessions help us to understand the seamless nature of the Christian gospel and the beauty of its coherence. They tell the story of the whole of the Bible as fulfilled through the person and work of Jesus Christ, helping us to understand the larger purpose of God's revelation. The Bible announces from Genesis to Revelation, in the person and work of Jesus Christ, peace and reconciliation with God through the forgiveness of sin. The confessions capture these central truths of the gospel for our spiritual edification. Question and Answer 70 of the Westminster Larger Catechism speaks of justification as an act of God's free grace in which He pardons all of our sins, accepts us, and accounts us righteous only because of Christ, and received by faith alone. This truth is to have a freeing effect on the life of a Christian. Christians who do not have a good understanding of the central goal of God's revelation to us in the gospel will struggle with assurance and confidence before God.

Works equal rewards or deceptive wages 1 Cor.3:8, Prov.11:18. Faith and Salvation comes through God the Father who sent Jesus, Jesus who paid our sin debt, and the Holy Spirit who leads us to the Father and Son. Eph.2:8-9.

"Is the assurance of our salvation found in our faith or in our works?" Wow kind Sirs...for that question...breeds debates. For... James said it took BOTH faith AND works to be saved. But Paul said, it was ONLY faith... James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. So for 2,000 yrs, there has been a non-stop debates and/or arguments, about Salvation. And it will NOT stop until Judgment Day; when ALL is reveaded by Jesus (who IS God). Now I believe this... It does not take either one to be "Saved". Rather: if ANY one believes in the same "God" of Abraham*; who wroshiped that God; they are instantly Saved for ever. Becaue; the Holy Spirit instantly gives them a NEW "Spiriitual Birth" (Born Again) that will NEVER die! OSAS! AMEN! Sadly, 80% of the "Christian World"; adamantly and categorically espouses: "It TAKES works to be savedl AND...to keep it!". Sad, but oh so true. May Jesus have mercy on those foolish ones; that believe in that satan-led, Godless, HOGWASH! For Jesus said...John 3:16 God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish in hell, but have everlasting life. And Jesus WAS the God that Abraham believed in; AND he worshiped that God! Even though he never heard the "new" name of God (Jesus). But in Hebrew it is "Yeshuah"; which Jesus changed form "YHWH"; because the Israelites blasphemed that name for 2,000 yrs. Thus, there is a "NEW Covenant" (as of 70 AD) and other new names. Believe it or not. Praise Jesus Holy Name. End of story... ...In any case kind Sirs Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN! * Sadly, the "god": that the muslims and jews worship; is a satan-led fake god. And that goes for EVERY religion in the world forever... Romans 2:28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Galatians 3:29 And if ye be Jesus', then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

@@transformers_quotes5738 Thank you kind sir "Transformers_Quotes"; for your reply in a sensible, nice way. Unlike many Christians; that blast ANY one they do not agree with. Yes, I am well aquainted with "differences" throughout the bible; when they rationalize; so the diffferences are forced to be the SAME! I believe that to be a satan-led, Godless trick; causing people to believe James was right. And Paul was condoning James; when he was NOT agreeing atoll. Because..Paul made it "Crystal Clear" that NO "works" are needed to be Saved. And James made it Crystal Clear that "works" WERE needed! And one more "contradiction": that even broughtJesus into the subject: was Deuteronomy 24:1 vs Mathew 19:3-8. Where Jesus said Moses WAS WRONG; from "the beginning". But get this kind Sir: When I show that to many people; most of them "rationalize" and say; "Well Moses was saying the same thing as Jesus did!". Yeah Right! Come ON!: "Christian World"; there are MANY contradictions in ALL bibles; so why not tell the truth? Because...NO bible has EVER been "Inerrant and Infallible". As preachers have esoused for 4,000 yrs. Sad indeed. Because THAT quintessential "title" goes to Jesus ONLY. But now... don't throw the bibles out; because it has errors and contradictions galore. Because there are MANY pure, Heavenly verses, that ARE true. But realize that NO person; can discern on our many of the lies; because satan is too clever. But... IF we get on our knees; and pray sincerely to Jesus ONLY; and ask Him to "detour" us AROUND the lies (from satan); and "steer" us to the Truths (from Jesus)...We will say easily, "James and Moses, etc; YOU are dead Wrong!". And stand on it!... ...In any case kind Sir, Please Pray OFTEN and Praise Jesus OFTEN; for He is the ONLY true "God Almighty"; there will ever have been. And may Jesus bless you and yours always. AMEN! P.S. Compare this one: Mathew 1:1 vs John 8:58 and Mathew 22:41-45. (note: I could show any one; who has a open mind: there are "enumerable" errors and contradictions: in all bibles. END of Story Christian World! And thanks again kind Sir.

The problem is that these answers are so generic. 1 John 2:4 specifically says that if we aren’t keeping his commandments, it’s because we’re not actually saved. The assurance people are seeking is absolutely seen in works, where we are specifically told that they will identify true Christian’s.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life” Who is it that has the Son? It is those who have believed in Him (John 1:12). If you have Jesus, you have life. Not temporary life, but eternal. And, according to 1 John 5:13, you can know that you have this eternal life. Assurance of our salvation isn’t found in our faith we fail to muster up it’s found in the work God has done in us to give us that faith, it’s God that keeps us secure through his work not our ability to coordinate faith.

There is no "faith" in Calvinism. Irresistible determinism means it cannot exist. According to the 5th pillar, Calvinists who do not do works are assured they are not elected to salvation. Pray to the Father for Him to show you the truth. Christ died for the sins of all men because He loved all men just as He told you to do. If you love all men but you think God doesn't, you are following a false gospel. If you love even one person that God doesn't, you are following a false gospel. God is love. "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ." - Colossians 2:8 "and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world." - 1 John 2:2 "By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother." - 1 John 3:10 Do not put man-made doctrines and tribal followings ahead of God. Read the Word openly as a child would and beware the wolves in sheep's clothing who would separate you from the flock.
