QOTD: ⚡ Is there really the much of a difference between the band style wallet out there to say one is better than them all? Or does it truly come down to personal preference and feature needs?
@Grogg22
@Grogg22 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for another good comparison review. It seems to be preference of features. From these 2, if I were pushed to choose it would be the Aviator. I'd add the felt to the coin space & use it for keys, such as home, mailbox, office. For extracting cards, did you try pushing out the opposite side from what you demonstrated? The indentation seems like a good push point, and I'm curious if that would alleviate the concern you expressed regarding accidentally opening the coin holder.

I been carrying a Ridge Aluminum Wallet for two-years. The only advantage that I found is that it has a small footprint over my previous leather wallet and that it can get wet. The downsides are huge for me. The money clip broke. So I started using the cash strap. Then the cash strap back plate broke; now I just using the cash strap with out the plate. The fabric on the cash strap is frayed. The I can't count the number of times, when I tried to pull out one credit card, I dropped all the cards on the floor at the cash register. Finally, after a couple of months, the finish on the blue aluminum looked horrible; it is full of scratches and most of the color has come off. Not what I expected for a wallet that now cost $95.00 new. I am now looking for something else. For $100, I expect that wallet would look and wear a lot better after 2-years of use.

@@yanceysautodetailing9179 Had mine for 3 years or so. The finish does look bad now with all the scratches on the plates(green aluminum). Also, there are dents where the elastic opening is as there is no support against the plate there. I've had no other issues build issues. One thing I don't like is the opening on the bottom to push the cards out, I would prefer it be on the top to pull them out. I wish they also sold replacement or specialty plates separately. How many cards do you use with yours? I'm at 9-11 with a bill or paper sometimes folded at the second to last spot.

@joee6349

So i ordered both... Got the Ridge wallet about a week sooner... Used it for a week... Then the aviator arrived... I tried it out for a couple days, wanted to give it a fair shake... But I am returning the Aviator.. I really fell in love with the ridge. The aviator isn't bad, and if i never had used the Ridge I probably would have been fine with it... But I just feel like the Ridge is a lot easier to handle... I think it's easier to sort through the cards, easier to put the cards in and take them out... Sliding all the cards out is pretty easy on the aviator, but choosing one individual card is not as easy as with the Ridge.... One aspect of these wallets, might be a plus or a minus to you, but the Aviator does have a tighter grip on bills. Now I found the Ridge at first to seem a little loose for cash, but after using for a week, and having it in my pocket, the cash never came loose or fell out... So I was thinking i wished the money strap was tighter, until i received the aviator wallet... The aviator money strap/clip combo is very tight... But almost too tight... It is more difficult to get your bills in and out... It even bends up the corners of the folded bills when trying to slide them in... So what i thought was going to be a plus, for me was more of an inconvenience in every day use. I think the ridge although seeming a little loose at first, gives just the right amount of grip to the bills that they will not fall out even moving around in your pocket a lot, but it does this while also making putting the bills in and taking them out extremely smooth and convenient.. I also thought i was going to like the Aviator for the Change slot... but this just gives the wallet unnecessary thickness in my opinion... i can do without it. The ridge just seems to be a little more together... The front and back metal don't move around as much.. For the aviator the cards also get stuck a bit on the elastic when sliding cards in... Overall the ridge is just better in every way in my personal opinion. Cards getting stuck when sliding them in is just not an issue with the ridges horizontal build. Now maybe what I prefer is not what other people prefer, Maybe the aviator is the better wallet, I just think the ridge checks off all my personal preferences to a tee. I do think the money strap could be just a bit tighter, but like I said the bills haven't come out, and with the Aviator i'm really bending up the money trying to shove it in. It just takes a lot more concentrated effort to pry the money clip open enough to slide the money in... If you are someone who rarely uses cash at all, and want it to be as secure as possible, maybe the aviator is for you ... Or maybe the money clip version of the ridge is better... I just think the most important thing for me was how it feels actually taking out my cards and putting them back in, and being able to navigate through them all without removing them from the wallet... and that feel and convenience, as well at the more sturdy wallet definitely goes to the Ridge. The aviator often times feels off line, like you have to re-stack a deck of cards after you shuffle them.. However the Ridge always feels like a perfectly stacked deck of cards.

Great comparison mark, thank you for emphasising coins still used heavily outside the u.s... here in the Philippines wee still use them on our public transportation , The aviator looks good but it looks flimsy putting cards in and out 🤔 btw the aviator cost more if you want the cash plate like the ridge last time i looked, and its silly how much they charge for it. The good thing about the ridge what you see is what you get, no add ons etc.. thats why i didi not purcahse an aviator because its more expensive.. and how they can trick you in spending more if you want diff finishes or materials for the wallet. Which i dontlike and did not bother anymore. Thanks agaid for the comparison

The coin tray also seems like a great idea to hold your change. Whenever I’m at the register checking out, I get a bunch of loose change and I awkwardly cram it in my pockets, but if I could simply just toss it back in my wallet, then that would be super convenient.
@mikep3813
@mikep3813 3 жыл бұрын
You have that backwards. "Awkwardly cram it into my pockets"? You have change in your hand, you put your hand in your pocket, you open your hand and boom, the change is in your pocket. "Simply toss it back into my wallet"? That tray requires you to place them all in flat in order to close the thing....that seems way more likely to fumble around with and not practical at all. Most people would never use it for change, I could maybe see storage for a key but that's what a keychain is for.

I’m very happy with the Ridge and based on this review, I still believe I made the right choice. The design is far more sleek and stylish and the Aviator’s coin tray seems rather gimmicky and impractical, especially on account of the low volume it can hold. Agreed. I have been using a Ridge wallet for 3 or 4 years and it is a great wallet. I will never go back to a traditional leather wallet. And he messed up with the removal of the cards, they can be "fanned" from the bottom and a card selected without taking all the cards out to get the one you are looking for. I carry about 7 cards in mine and have the strap (for receipts) and the clip for cash. As for coins (fellow Canuck here) I generally do not have them around and when I do I use a small leather coin pouch that lives in the console of my car.

Aviator for the win, coins are not the main difference for me but how you get cards out, the ridge has always been annoying with the pinching of the bottom to fan out, i prefer at least for me to push out with the thumb opening on the aviator, far faster and less complicated for me. If i have to make concessions for the way it handles cards, then for me it voids the reason to get a card wallet and i would just go with a thin minimalist leather option.

I have been using this style of wallets for over 10 years. I have been buying them in Austria and Germany. They keep breaking because the frame is too light and its forged aluminum. The Ridge is heavier duty and designed not to break Only criticism it would be nice for first card to be displayed and move the money clip or strap to back.

You can equip a Ridge with a strap or a clip or both. I don’t even use the plate on my ridge. With these it becomes muscle memory as to how you access your cards. I’ve tried the top loading styles and I just couldn’t get access to my cards as easy as the Ridge. The coin tray should be made to hold keys.

I got The Ridge Damascus (laser etched) and absolutely love it. It takes some time to break in and get used to but it has become so easy since first getting it. I recently ordered the Aviator Slide in obsidian black with the aluminum frame and coin tray. Looking forward to its arrival. I have had my eye on the Titan One Slide model but simply cannot justify the cost, given its extremely good quality of grade 1 titanium, it seems a bit high unless you are constantly spending and pulling the wallet out. May get it in the future but waiting for the price to go down quite a bit and titanium costs level out. Thanks for the great review! NOTE: Don’t wear tight jeans or pants with metal card wallets like these.

Great comparison Mark. I have had a few Ridge wallets. For me in the UK I don’t know why, when I think of the high cost and import VAT, 😂 I used them a bit and then sold them on. I just keep remembering that ‘squeeze’ to get cards out, then having to pick my cards up from the floor where they’ve just been ejected to! 😆 👍🏻 Again, like you, I don’t like folding money over twice anymore.

I think you forgot about RFID protection in the feature category because it doesn't look like the Aviator has it, while the Ridge does. Just an observation. I don't need a coin holder, even when I travel internationally so I prefer the Ridge & have been very happy with my carbon fiber model.

I didn’t mention it because it’s merely a marketing ploy. RFID protection is not needed anymore and questionably was ever needed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h32VeXidhKuErsU. Regardless, I really like the look and feel of the Ridge Carbon Fiber, I would say the best looking of their offering.

Have the Aviator, well made, excellent customer service. But for 2 pieces of thin aluminum, fancy torx screws and some elastic it`s woefully overpriced. Walking around with a lump of metal in your pocket isn`t that enjoyable. The screwdriver is the best part. Truthfully a wide rubber band works just as well as any of these style "wallets"

One thing I have noticed on all these wallet comparison channels, is that none of them use cards with number indentations on them, but in real life, we would. Do the indentations A) take up more space, and B) cause harm by scratching the adjacent cards magnetic strips?
@walletopia
@walletopia 4 жыл бұрын
Box wallets, for example, are impacted as the embossed cards are taller. These companies usually have a chart on their site that shows how many cards you can get in. By way of rubbing, if the cards are all oriented the same way, no as the embossing is on the bottom and the strip is at the top of the back of the card.

I think a better solution would be a way to isolate the cards. Have one as a "primary" and the rest bundled together. If I'm at a point of sale making a purchase, I don't need my drivers license and LTC card popping out every time. Like the Grip 6 model where you push a lever and ALL cards come sliding out. 80% of the time, I'm using ONE card and it would nice to have it "separated" from the rest.
@walletopia

Yes, that’s the “quick access card slot” I mention and really like with wallets. I will use one card 90% of the time so quick access to it without needing to pull the stack out is preferred.

@MattHikesHills

I'm not feeling these band style wallets. They look like they require constant readjusting and two handed action. I use an Akielo with the leather outer and can remove the fron or back card with one hand. I work on an Air Base and using this wallet makes it easy to reach my ID card when at the base gate. I put my ID card at the front and my cash card at the back as they are the most used. The leather covered version provides some secure pouches on the front and back too, ideal for cash and more secure than a clip. Cards come out quick and are easy to return to the holder. I cant fault it.

Over $105+ for the Ridge!? It's gone up over $40+ in a few years when I remember it at a store for $65. Ridiculous. Even at $60+ it was expansive. Both say they are Blocks RFID (wireless theft) but I would bet Ridge would be a better performer on that note. I have a ebay one that is a knock off and I could replace it many times and not reach that $100 mark. I've had it for over 4 years and it's still good AND has RFID (wireless theft) as well. Supposedly. Just my feedback. If money was not an issue maybe I'd get the ridge. I appreciate your comparison though. Thank you.

Solid review. Like both, but the coin tray seems a bit of a PIA with noise and thought of them falling out if you don’t get the cards right. Also, 20 cards? Kind of kills the minimalist concept. I can’t think of carrying that many cards… for that thickness, might as well go back to leather and go see a shrink about your hoarding issues.

I have my only card in my phone case. Otherwise I just use mobile payment and most other auxilliary cards such as loyalty points and discounts are now connected to my card or bank account - even the driver's license and student ID have been digitalized. Not sure why you need an expensive wallet like this because in our lifetime cards and cash will disappear entirely making the lifetime warranty a moot point. But I have nothing against the review or reviewer if you think my post is aimed toward the channel - these videos are excellent!
