I’ve resisted buying one for years. It excels at tasks I don’t use most knives for. I do have a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 140 that could easily be used for urban survival AND it can carve wood and baton. My favourite bushcraft knife is a blind horse knife bushcrafter.

I use a BK2 or a Terävä Jääkäripuukko 110 most times I am out in woods. If use the 110 and winter I bring an axe or I bring the BK2 and a small SAK. The BK2 is surprisingly easy to use and possible carve and improvise a lot if you give time to learn use it.

I commented earlier about using it when I was a cop. I cut through a windshield and got to injured people before anyone else could figure out a way. No damage to the knife at all. I have busted out side and rear windows on cars and pried a secure apt door open when there was a fire. I also carried it with deer hunting, fishing and camping and it works for everything.

I think the BK-2 will always be one of my favorites. In fact, I have one in my "truck bag" as I type this. Admittedly though, I don't do a lotta' carving. I mainly use mine for wood harvesting and processing. As a "one tool option" camp-style knife, it really excels IMHO.

I took part of the coating off (only on the edge) and gave it a scandi grind. Feather sticking with it is waaayyy better now, it's still a beast at batoning and still holds its edge very well

The Becker was brought to life by ethan Becker and lived in the hands of Adam Francis for a decade battling the Esee 5 Everyone knows the Becker is a beast . A Bk2 and a mora classic and a hatchet you will be ready for and thing you need to process The reason the Becker splits so good is because its a saber grind no one sabers anymore because there lazy full flat grinds are easy to do .

I bought a BK2 10 years ago thanks to this channel and love the heck out of it. I don't do a ton of bushcrafting, but it's cool to be able to hack and baton with this beefy knife on occasion. Like others have said, he used to to penatrate a windshield to rescue someone. Thing with the BK2 vs a hatchet is pack ability. For example if you are in a vehicle, sure have a hatchet or an ax. But if you are on foot and need to move quickly do you really want to pack a heavy and clubersum hatchet or ax?

Being an avid bushcrafter in northern WI, MN, and Upper MI, I sometimes carry both a BK2 and a Mora. Companion. I carry the BK2 specifically for cutting limbs/logs for firewood and the Companion for smaller tasks such as feather-sticking. I love both knives and have beaten the heck out of them. That being said, I have one caveat to this. If I'm carrying my hatchet, I really have no need for the BK2. It is a good defensive knife, but I do not usually have to rely upon it as such. As for the Mora. Companion, I carry one in all of my bags, hiking, hunting, and EDC. It is the most versatile fixed blade knife I own. One additional thought, the best folding knife I've ever used bushcrafting is the Ontario Rat Model 1. This knife can do feather-sticking, trim branches, and I have even used it to trim down a piece of wood for the foundation of my cabin. When I attempted to use by BK2 for the task, it failed miserably. Anyway, I appreciate the video and love the content. Thanks!

Good take. To use another example: cutting axes and splitting axes. If you want to cut fast and not get bound up, you want a thin, razor sharp axe edge. If you are chopping up logs, you want something with a fat wedge, so energy is translated outwards, to push the log apart. Personally I think the BK2 is a superb knife, but its a tool for particular scenarios and reminds me of the British Army Jungle Knife. Its basically a big fat metal tool, that will serve as a hatchet, a knife, a hammer, a trenching tool, and possibly a step....if driven into a tree trunk. It does nothing superbly but it does a lot of things passably. (although in my opinion less well than the BAJK) If you are going to be processing wood, but not taking a hatchet, then the BK2 is ideal. If you are being air dropped into the jungles of Vietnam then this is great. I would however note that it is HEAVY. If you are making TikToks in your back garden that is not an issue, but if you are literally carrying everything on your back, then basically .... if you take this, you will be leaving something else behind.

Bushcraft Knives are different from Survival Knives. Big Difference. You want your Survival Knives to be durable and unbreakable as possible. It must split wood. It must help get wood. Must survive Batoning uses. Must skin and process meat if needed... Might need a thinner knife companion but not necessary. Bushcraft. Can be thinner. Less durable. Must slice wood. Build a fire. Doesn't need to split wood, but helps if it can. Best used with Saws and Axes. Woodcraft Knives. Very thin. Wood working only. Not for survival purposes.

Joe X destruction video's... The Mora Robust held up longer than the BK2. Though the edge was a mess. The tip of the BK2 broke off completely when he hit another piece of steel. The BK9 broke after one hit on the stone. Many other knives took that test without damage. Not saying that Becker's aren't good knives. But they are far from unbreakable. It's excellent if you want to cut a way through a car roof. The BK2 keeps on making holes in the car without damage.

The BK-2 is made as a survival knife, you find mostly only knieves called survival knife but are not at all. A Survival knife needs at 1st be good in its priority , that is never to break and never give up no matter what, because in a survival situation this is the most important point, there is no 2nd chance in survival, you can not run home baby cry and buy another knife, when your knife will fail in a survival situation , you are dead and never come home again.

I have an ESEE-5 (probably will get a BK2 anyway) and I believe it was stated to be a pilot's knife in order to exit aircraft wreckage with what's essentially a sharp pry. ESEE themselves stated the 6 was more intended as their general utility knife over the 5 for bushcraft and wood tasks. I agree with your statement that the BK2 and ESEE-5 are better for urban tasks but I'd recommend the BK3 if you want a tool for all seasons in an urban setting, it's a beast.

I love my BK2 but shortly after getting it from Blade hq I went into the mountains of Utah and put it to the test. Literally 15 minutes in of just buttoning the damn thing I chipped the blade. I tookbit home and sharpened it on my Ken Onion (which I personally love) and took it back out. It performed flawlessly in spite of the micro chips. I suppose a different metal may have performed better in the woods but I got a shaving sharp edge on the Onion and it did well at many things. Just don't try and dig with it.... that's when mine chipped.

I don't like BK2, a Hulk knife. If it can do almost bushcraft jobs with Mora bushcraft knife, what else the weakness that Mora has? The answers are chopping and stabbing, that BK2 is good at. When you need lots of trees to build a shelter, you would want to have a BK2 on hand. Thus, depending on what environment faced and what tools carried (eg Axe), BK2 is selected option and not always a best choice. Here, I recommend a more balanced knife of Ka-bar: BK7.

I wrote a review a few weeks ago that I'm going to publish sooner or later that comes to the same conclusion. It's a great "tool" but not a great knife for most purposes. It's tough, and will therefore last through abuse a new knife owner will give it, but once you gain experience, know what to look for in knife fatigue, and what's bad to do (I learned to not hit a knife with a metal hammer through metal straps with mine 5 years ago), it stops being great and becomes a hindrance for most woodwork. As you said, it would make a good urban survival knife or outdoors survival knife if weight isn't a concern. Mine rides in my overland build now. Can't get rid of it, it's a good tool, but it's not a very good knife for traditional purposes. Your review was quite good and very accurate. I can tell you actually used your knife, and others, to come to your conclusion. Too many people just try the one knife out and think it's pretty good because it's all they know.

The geometry isn't really designed for it. For its intended purpose it has a great grind. I tried to really emphasize in the video that the knife IS well designed for what its purpose is. Its purpose is not wood carver/bushcrafter. Putting a scandi grind on it won't change that. It's like throwing a pair of lightweight cleats and shoulder pads on an O-lineman and then telling him to go play wide out. That's not what he's built for. Thanks for watching, Matt! -Rusty

@@mattariety955 Great question but one comment response can't unpack everything in it - unless you want to read a book long comment. You're going to be hard pressed to find one tool that does everything well. [Many people -particularly in the survivalist community- are on an eternal grail hunt for the ultimate "one tool option." That's a quest that won't end for them because there's really no such thing.] For example, for serious backpackers, every gram counts. If I'm just doing a backpacking trip with a reasonable certainty of no overnight, I might just grab my Fairly titanium backpacker knife that weighs something like 1/2 an ounce (www.fairlyknives.com/product/titanium-backpacker). For camp, I'd ask what you are doing at camp? Are you prepping a lot of firewood? Building a shelter? Carving spoons? A knife will not beat an axe at splitting rounds. A knife will not beat a saw at cutting wood to lengths. A chunky knife will not beat a nimble, scandi ground knife at carving. There's a reason the "trinity" of bushcraft is the axe, saw, and small and thin knife. I'd almost always rather have a Mora knife and a Bahco Laplander saw IN THE WOODS than any of those options you mentioned. And together (the saw Bahco and Mora) weigh less than most or all of those options (and they also cost way less!) . Was that helpful at all or did I just add more frustration to your search? -Rusty

@@Equip2Endure lol a bit of both helpful and more frustrated haha, no i really appreciate you taking the time to answer that. the one i was also looking at was the Mora garberg as well.. i know i keep thinking i need a big ass knife like the esee 6 or bk2 but in reality i dont especially if i have a small forest axe with me and a folding saw like you said.. i think you helped alot more than you know. Thanks Rusty appreciate your insight.

I'd say that the simplest definition of "bushcraft knife" is a knife that is primarily designed for carving but also sturdy enough to be batoned. The BK2 does not qualify as a bushcraft knife for a number of reasons, the ridiculous thickness, as discussed in the video, certainly one of the biggest ones, which makes it unsuitable for carving, as skillfully demonstrated. The title, then, IMO should read "Is the BK2 a good knife for bushcraft?" -- as its not a bushcraft knife at all. Maybe my feathers are ruffled a little. We could even argue that a knife termed "bushcraft knife" should meet Mors Kochanski's specifications for an "ideal survival knife," as this is the origin of the bushcraft knife style, pattern or concept, but I won't go that far. As for the BK2, I don't recall ever seeing anyone carrying one at a bushcraft event. In dozens of events, maybe one or two newbies might have had one. Bushcrafters tend to prefer bushcraft knives, after all. Prepper events might be a different story.

You got it. There are a few groups that we like to pull the best info from-bushcrafters, survivalists, backpackers, etc. They often tend to be a little bit siloed and not learn from each other. But as you said, there are still some out there that think of the BK2 as a great bushcraft knife. -Rusty

So many channels preach that the BK-2 is the best bushcraft knife. Why would you choose to bushcraft with a knife that is so huge and weighs a full pound? That would suck. It's a survival knife.

I don't get the whole bushcraft 1 knife thing. Why not just carry more than 1 blade? I have a kabar kukri for chopping and processing wood, and a Mora companion for finer tasks. That should be able to cover a very broad range of tasks.

It's the best knife to use when working outside around the house, because it can chop through pretty much anything. As far as bushcraft is concerned, it's a terrible idea. If you want something for anything other than carving, and don't mind that it literally weighs a pound (half kilo), then it's worth it as far as I'm concerned.

This knife still makes no sense to me, a bk7 exists for all the purposes you stated its a better "one tool option" if thats even a real scenario. The bk2 is not particularly good at anything. Even in its midweight class there are much better knives that are similar like the fallkniven a1. If you wanna do it all get a mora, a folding saw and cold steel trail boss all your tasks are now covered for under $100. But for one day hikes its hard to beat the bk7 it does literally everything the only other tool ill bring is a small multitool.

I found fake Ka Bar BK2 on eBay for 38 dollars. They look identical to the real ones and even has all the same info printed on the knife. If you put a real one and fake one side by side, it would be hard to tell the difference. The reason I know it's fake is the price and it's being sold from China and the reviews say their knock offs broke.

You lost me with the chest lever cut, for two reasons. First, in my forty years playing in the woods I have never needed to use that. I cut like a normal person. Secondly, you were flat out ignoring the intent of the designer; the BK2 was never intended to be a carving knife, it’s an end of the world, only tool left option. That fiddleback is a pretty piece, but it won’t stand up to 1% of what the BK2 can.
@Equip2Endure

The video starts out with the point that the knife you pick should depend on task you want to perform. If you like batoning, then the BK2 is great. I prefer an axe for splitting wood. Poke around in the wood carving communities and you will find that the Chest Lever cut is one of their favorites because of how efficient and controlled it is. -Rusty

BUT i always run into Guys that buy the most expensive knives and they do work Great...for Bushcraft...but when you go out to the MOUNTAINS it's not to much about Bushcraft...if you want to do Bushcraft get a small knife if you want a knife that does everything Get a BK2 or Esee5 or a Esee6...but to say you can't do Bushcraft with a Bk2 that not true but what is true is that Small Bushcraft knife can't do everything a Bk2 can do..BUT you can try you will probably Break it...

Knives were never made to batton with . An ax is always best to process wood . That $350 knife you have is ok . But now you are married to a diamond stone or ceramic because of your steel choice . Working knives vs survival working knives is huge difficulty in way there made . Survival requires carbon for fire starting and spring action when processing would Then theres the blade edge to maintain again 20 degree is best because anyone can sharpen it and maintain it for life .
