Deep inside the pristine rainforests of Papua New Guinea, there’s a shocking reality: environmental devastation in areas that should be protected.
Carbon credit projects have been springing up across the country, run by foreign companies keen to cash in on the carbon stored in PNG trees.
They promise to protect these areas in exchange for carbon credits, and iconic Australian brands have unwittingly bought into the ventures to offset their emissions.
But after a month travelling through the country, Four Corners has discovered deforestation and indigenous landowners angry at unfulfilled promises.
