Suggestion: After you test all the targets, get a set of the 'build your own' bags, stuff one with old clothing, one with plastic grocery bags and test those against the pre-made targets. I'm really curious how they would compare.

Good idea. Sort of a comparison of DIY options (suggested on YT).

I take all my brown paper feed bags from my animals and fold them into a pile which I shove into a cat litter bag and then place a few more cat litter bags. Makes a nice self healing target for free

I have tested old plastic bags (also used pallet wraps, and old tunnel plastic), mixed with styrofoam, and any type of rubish foam. It doesnt take water - so not getting heavier and dump. also you can add more foams if pundage is lower, or more plastic if bow is heavier. In both cases you have to compress rubbish stuf to strong plastic bags - I use old grain bags 3 - 5 layers. Quality wise, it might be similar to those target, but is completly free and recycled.

My homemade target is going on 3.5 years. It uses old berlap sacks as the target face and old clothes and such as the innards. If it stops working as well, I just open the top, pull the clothes out, put them back in and it works for the next several thousand shots.

The reason I purchased mine was for the price, I don't have the budget for a 3 to 500 dollar target. I don't run a high volume of arrows through mine, but enough to have fun with. I added some glue to the insert to keep it in, and filled the legs with expanding foam when I realized that hitting the legs would cause it to shatter in that area. All things considered, not a bad product for the price.

I’ve had this target for 6 years or so and it lives in the elements. It’s held up great but it only gets shot with a 45lb recurve. I’d like to see you incorporate distance into some tests as with the rocking of the target and the distance those two items might couple into a longer lasting target. Thanks for the vid!

I have a 3d deer target that has a roughly 10x10 replaceable block representing the vital and it is held in by 2 pine dowels. I only shoot at it a handful of times per week just before and during hunting season to keep myself in the mindset of the kill zone on a deer. Also the block can be flipped to different sides for broad side quartering and elevated shots. Its advertised on the box as self healing foam and for broad heads..

We always use wooden dowels pushed in from the top and bottom and leave an inch hanging out so you can pull them out

Ive bought two of these, they hold up fairly well and if you do damage the non core area, expanding foam fills those gaps and stops arrows again.

I bought the $200 version of this 20 years ago. Had a more realistic vitals plug. Weight was approximately 30lbs. Sent 100's of arrows down range.. mostly compound. Have yet a need to replace the plug.

I have this exact same target and it's held up for the past few years even being out in the elements. Honestly it's a good target for the price

I have that target. When the insert starts to wear out, I put one of my block targets behind it so I can keep using it for longer.

Gotta jump in on this one. I have owned a couple of these now along with a 220$ delta McKenzie target The shooter buck in my opinion is just as good at half the price I’ve repaired mine with expandable crack filling foam from Home Depot Walmart etc very cheap and it holds up fairly well The other disadvantage to the target is the hard plastic legs If you drop a shot Shank a shot and hit the leg it’s very very difficult to remove the arrow and if you hit the leg enough you’ll break the leg Not really a concern to experienced archers But should be a consideration when first starting and increase your distance which increases the risk of dropping a shot Otherwise it’s a decent target Thanks for the video JimR

great series!! thanks for doing this! one question on this video that you didn't seem to mention. when you did your hot glue experiment, at the end of your test, you cut the glue to see how easy the insert could be removed. after you did this and re-installed the insert, did it seem like the hot glue residue still helped to keep the insert in place even though it was no longer joining the insert to the target's body? or did the insert return to it's pre-hot glue state of falling out on impact with the arrows?

I believe scheels has this same deer but the insert is more dense built for crossbows. Maybe you could reorder the crossbow insert? They are both field logic brand.

Just a thought, could you bore a hole through its back down into the insert, and slide in a dowel? I know that wouldnt be ideal, but 🤷🏼

I have this target, and also 5 way core replacement one (bit bigger). My ones are Glendel brand, but are actually identical to Shooter. Certainly made in one factory - just branded differently. They are good for private practicing - too poor quality for club shooting range.

I like the idea of the replaceable insert, but the fact that it pulls out with arrow removal looks very annoying. I think a possible fix would be to bore a hole through the spine from above straight through the insert, say 3/8” diameter, and cram a long stick of the same diameter down in. Like a peg.

Why did you glue the insert in? Why not just put a stick into it from belly upwards to the middle of the insert. Maybe a broken Arrowshaft or something. That should do the job and is easy to remove when changing the insert.
