I saw this engine a long time ago and was excited about how it worked. No oil, no preheat, no steam exhaust. I wondered why it was never shown powering a vehicle. The steam powered land speed record videos disappeared from their website. Now it pretty much shows you nothing. Very disappointing to find out it probably a scam. I never really expected it to go into widespread production because oil companies would not allow it. He would end up dead pretty quick.

Totally scam, Cyclone was never a legitimate company
@detrechrats7 ай бұрын
I think it could work if some of these builders on KZbin with their CAD programs & 3-D printers & such put their heads together & reverse engineered it. The question is, would they be allowed to do it legally? Oil companies don't seem to care if you show people how to do something at home. They don't like it if you seem to be gearing up to produce something that will compete with them for significant money.
@giovannicesaramorim9adigan9617 ай бұрын
@@detrechrats I mean, you can just make it without cad or 3d printing, you just need tubings and the correct engine parts. The problem in this project was mostly the technology used, the burner and engine are very innefficient, and I'd think about revising the boiler in its entirety and the engine into a turbine. The condenser is also too optimistic, it needed to be bigger to work.

Cyclone wasn't a scam but the naive investors who gave Harry Schoell the money are to blame. The premise was that water lubricated ceramic bearings can eliminate the need for steam oil. The Cyclone engine wore quickly and could never have been more than a toy.

The problem is that nowadays, petrol and diesel are available pretty much anywhere, so external combustion engines have basically no advantages over ICE.

The only real advantage of external combustion engines, both steam and stirling, is their fuel flexibility. This doesn't matter much when you have access to a global supply chain of refined petroleum products. It may be more helpful, however, in situations where you're cut off from the grid and may need to scavenge for your own fuel. Engines like this would never become mainstream, but they could find a niche in military and disaster response applications. Think generators that can burn garbage for electricity, cars that run on firewood, and so on.

If it is dead in the water could someone use their ideas? It looks like it wouldn't be that hard to make it work. They probably exaggerated the performance as scams are in the habit of doing but there were some very attractive things about it like the closed loop water system & the compact design.

Steam as a medium for a heat engine is doomed to fail -- it can only manage about 10% thermodynamic efficiency, no matter what you do (anything higher requires insane pressures). That's why Diesel took over from steam on the rails, and in turn is being replaced by electric traction. So even if this engine were real, it's not a step forwards.

When I first saw this engine I didn't really pay it much attention as it just has too many moving parts for my liking when compared to a properly built rotary engine with all the design flaws that went in to production taken out. If I can ever get to the point were I am able to start building the rotary engines properly there will be no other engine in the world that can match it due to it having 270° of compression. It's also the easiest engine to convert to running on hydrogen since there are no valves. If you want to know what the flaws where of the rotary engine that went into production just watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZLVdH1qr9ySo80 Why Mazda hasn't produced the engine is beyond me but I can see this mechanic solved the issues with the rotary engine.
