Maserati did technically beat Buick on those portholes, but not by a whole lot. Buick introduced Ventiports in 1948 for the 1949 model year, Maserati did their version in 1947 for their first road-legal car, the A6. In the early years, Buick's were actual holes that went all the way into the engine compartment as well. They supposedly did help at least somewhat with cooling, but it was always primarily cosmetic.

It is bullet proof and allows the engine to rev to 7500 rpm in a hardbeat. In auto, if the clutch is in decent condition, gear changes are very aceptable, but should be driven as a manual with the paddles. When Maserati went to the auto box, they had to increase the engine capacity from a 4.2 to a 4.7 litre to get similar 0 to 100 kph time. Autos don't rev that well. My 17' Ford actually has a "Low battery voltage" code. It threw it when the battery was failing(only maybe 3 years old), which was likely due to the fact that it likes to charge at over 15v(seen up to 15.4) during winter, and it was in spring when it started to give up the ghost. It gives me hope that the other non-Euro manufacturers spent the extra month programming the PCM and BCM to say, "my battery is trash," rather than throwing low voltage codes for all manner of sub-systems. p.s. Thanks to the change in the hierarchy of faults in late models, it never threw the "dummy light", and I found the code, after swapping the battery, with a code scan(it had multiple physical bad battery symptoms)

I’m sure the Car Wizard’s model has more functions for a large shop. For those not aware, a conductance tester is light years better than a multimeter or charger/tester. The only caveat is you need to input the original CCA of the battery into the conductance tester. It will tell you how much deterioration of the internals on the battery. They do not induce a heavy load on the battery and gives a great amount of predicability. Once the battery reaches 80% of its initial rating it is toast. Great video on the Maserati!

Hondas and Acuras too. A dying battery in a Honda product will throw VTEC codes, transmission codes and ABS codes. Biggest annoying part is that on every jumpoff until you replace the battery, you have to put in the radio code.

Battery life story part 2. I purchased a 1998 Subaru legacy wagon with a 2.2 5-speed manual all-wheel drive in 2015 with 164,000 original miles I'm the second owner. The battery was dated for 2010. And from 2018 to 2020 during the winter I would have starting issues but I managed to get every penny out of that battery that came with the car. Sometimes I push the car down the road pop the clutch during the summer it works fine I don't remember the name of the battery or the brand or the battery I think it was an interstate battery and I was impressed with that now my car has 227,000 MI with a battery in it that I'm going to try to keep for another 10 years. Had exhaust work done on the car no resonator thrush muffler sounds nice. I'll be doing a video in time.

These cars are typically quite misunderstood. In fact, if it weren't for the semi-recent handful of KZbin videos on these cars, I would say that the tune in the comments below would be completely different. I have driven one of these before (not the automatic, but the true F1), and I can say for myself that it's a car you have to feel to believe. I'm glad they're finally beginning to receive the spotlight they deserve - existing harsh criticism notwithstanding. I can see where some of this criticism comes from, though: in regards to the F1 models, the driving experience is fantastic but not all that practical. The main drawback is the F1 gearbox (a true manual), since it's clutch-less. On open roads, it's perfect... but, you don't want to torture it through traffic. Second, they are not cheap to maintain: I've heard of owners going through rear sets of tires like crazy, and I've also been told that the consumables (bushings, etc.) wear quickly and cost a lot of money to replace. Then, there's there clutch, whose inevitable replacement is ~$5k. And, if you misuse that transmission, you're going to burn right through the clutch before you know it. For this reason, I feel new buyers will generally prefer the ZF-auto models (2007-2012) because they are more refined and are devoid of the F1 system. Those are not without their own set of problems - though all cars have their host of nuances and issues. From what I've found, they are NOT unreliable if you maintain them; the engine, which is a derivative of a Ferrari engine, is supposedly rock solid. Drive the car often, and it should theoretically have fewer issues than a BMW or Mercedes. Let it sit, though, and... well, that's probably a horrible idea. Dynamically and functionally, these cars are definitely not for everybody, and they must be treated as though they're still worth $$$. Seems like a hobby in its own. But, I guess my point here is that they're way better than they get credit for. I think people often confuse the Chrysler-made Maseratis with these Ferrari-Maserati-era cars, which is why you'll often hear them erroneously use a Ghibli as an example of why a Maserati from the 2000s is allegedly terrible.

The small gear reduction starters these (and most other) cars have will still spin a motor over well enough to start it on only 11 /11.5 volts. I've had Range Rovers , Jaguars and Aston Martins start well only to have the PCM shut the engine down when it senses the voltage is too low to constantly fire the coil packs (to avoid damage to the Catylitic converters ). The way modern batteries are made , I recommend changing them even sooner than 4 years , 2 in some cases especially on vehicles that are used in very hot or cold climates. Of course some customers dont like to hear that and mention that Im ripping them off by even suggesting that , but they are usually the nightmare customers that go from garage to garage not listening to any technician who suggests any preventative maintenance on their cars only to have them arrive on the hook soon after .

My BMW has run flats. When cold low pressure light always comes on. On time it stayed on for a week with one tire. I become lazy with tech as usually I check air pressure monthly before high tech stuff. I decided to finally add air to the tire. When I looked at the tire, there was 2 inch circular hole in the sidewall. I drove to the tire place and manager ran out to say stop the car. He could not believe it. Run flats saved me from a blowout at high speeds. Run flats should be on all cars especially most cars with no spares. I heard difficult to tune suspension with stiff run flat tires.

I believe you do NOT have to reset the radio tuning after removing the main battery - IF you buy a small battery gadget that plugs in to the cigarette lighter and just provides enough power to keep the radio, etc memories alive. I'm surprised The Car Wizard doesn't have one of these. Funny, Amazon sell them - search for "Socket Saver 12v" - only about $24.

Think also that tyre pressure sensors work by measuring the circumference of the tyre, so cold weather means tyres contract as well as the potential battery voltage issue, probably compounds it. Error codes on the dash can be laughable, on my Renault Scenic I got a misfire, knew straight away one of the coils had gone duff (my previous Vauxhall Zafira used to do one every 18-24 months), what did the dash display say? "Cruise control inoperative"...not helpful in the slightest!

I bought a 2015 Mustang in 2018 with only 6700 miles and the first thing I had to change was the battery but it was not dead so I swapped it with my Ford Contour battery which had been new at the time. The Mustang battery was a Motorcraft and after swapping it into the Contour it finally died for good this winter. My 97 F-150 had a battery in there that lasted almost 11 years I could not believe it. I looked at the date on the battery more than once to make sure I wasn't seeing things. That battery came from our local Fleet Farm which was 1,000 amp battery. But I almost got that much time out of my 79 Bronco which also had the same amperage and brand. Those batteries weigh a ton. I was told that it's not so much the amperage as it is the amount of lead in the plates. There is a company called Johnson batteries that makes Walmart batteries, makes the Interstate Batteries I think that's AutoZone and makes DieHard batteries amongst others.

Another issue to me is the battery being located to the rear of the car. This means longer cables to the starter and higher resistance over time.
