Combustion vehicles will always produce CO2. EVs depend on where the electricity was made with, and thats changing. Mining, currently uses a lot of fossil fuels, but I see no reason why mining can't be electrfied, but decarbonizing mining will depend on renewables and EV development, so it needs to be done at the same time. Manufacturing can also be electrified. I overwhelmingly charge at home. I'm 53,000 miles in. The tire pollution does depend on the tire. I don't even see information, let alone regulation. That could use some change. High horsepower 2 wheel drive vehicles can wear tires plenty fast, particularly when the engine isn't over the driven wheels. Dual motor at a given horsepower reduces load. Last but not least, the list of things you can make electricity with is long, while gasoline is short.

@18:11 This point is only valid because we made it to be valid. (That is, the point about people living in apartments are not suited to have EVs) It need not be like that. For example in China, there are more than 9 million EVs on the road, and they are selling around 1 million more per year every year. And yet almost everyone there lives in apartments. But they don't have any problems charging their EVs.

There is a video of an EV bus going thermal runaway in EU, 6 seconds its to late. Diesel buses are great since even if the bus goes on fire its a slow burn everyone can get out. The current tier 4 Diesel has almost nothing out the pipe now its nice from the clouds of smoke that used to blow out. Great video with actual reasoning in it and not a propaganda EV one
@fjalics
@fjalics 2 жыл бұрын
@big8garage I find that story suspicious. EVs do burn at 1/10 the rate of gasoline vehicles, but not that fast. I can't help but wonder if there was something funny, like the fire had been going on, then suddenly burst through the floor or something. There should be battery sensors throwing all kinds of alarms when that happens, and that's with nickel based chemistries. The LFP packs don't burn that easily.

the comparison with a 747 does not make that much sense cause it is the simple blame the others games. Here we have to raise the dykes decade by decade to avoid heavy damages as seen before after storms like in the sixities. If the ICE guys have to pay for the huge amount of CO2 the fair price then you would realise the reaal impact of driving a car. EV is not the best and not the end of the evolution but it is a step ahead and already ICE is dead in european car production cause development capaczities had been shifted. Who hires an ice engine engineer ? British formular one teams and all others are about selling the old tech to some one else who is willing to pay licence fees. And the supplier that have not moved are on the verge of death already. If it is not for everyone can be answered as always: can be but that does not mean to lower the pressure. Make the exhaust expensive and people will move ahead and look back on the glorious cheap car era they have had in the past . But that ignores all the issues we had seen in the environment like rivers with no fish, forrest dying as it had been called here back when we had the Ozon gap from the late 80s on and much more. Charging at home is far more convenient compared to fueling my diesel mercedes which I did today cause it is far more dirty and takes also time. Far easier to plug in the EV and charge it, use it for energy storage at home taking the surplus Power from the roof and later charge my home storage battery. Looks bright and tbh we can not reduce the CO2 emission fully in general cause a car needs to be reduced but we can keep an eye on that the footprint becomes smalller. Lithium recycling is quite easy and already established here so that they get 94% back to be reused as the material for the first time usage. There is no such issues once you hace establish a circle economy as here with deposits and all the other stuff and actions like deposit for 12V batteries that people bring their battery back to a recycling station. And the progress in the past 5 years has been quite significant for sure regarding range and performance also the charging speed and standardisation beyond a broader variety of choice between brands and sizes also the infrastructure. It also forces all to thing twice and consider to put a solar power system on their roof. Not that bad at all, especially in an era with doubling energyy prices.

21:23 the problem with most governments (I do not live in Britain, so I am speaking from my local experience) is that government does not necessarily want to solve the problem, but they want more money for the budget. So you end up with a tax that is named to fight something, but it does little to nothing in the real world. Usually that ends up as taxing the poor, because they have the least amount of money to fight that tax by buying EV or whatever else the authors of tax may "want" you to do.

From This Side o' the Pond: A brilliant overview, Jay. It's often hard to explain why a one-size-fits-all "solution" generally isn't much of one, but I think you've done it about as well as anyone can. The bit about encouraging the use of smaller vehicles - regardless of means of propulsion - is key to me, since here in the States we're seemingly hopelessly-addicted to monster pickups (and their SUV derivatives), often with the excuse of "hey, it's an EV/hybrid, size doesn't matter!", not thinking at all about the congestion issue these vehicles present. Of course, my principal means of transport, long- and short-distance, is on two wheels with an engine (a Vespa GTS 300), so I'm *very* big on the idea of encouraging smaller-footprint motorized transport, which has always been more of a thing Over There than Over Here.

I was a Tesla delivery driver and brand ambassador. Explained the operations and procedures and signed them off to their beaming owners. Can't remember how many I delivered around the country. As a car enthusiast I can confirm that they are bloody boring to drive. There is little feel and feedback, very easy to gain speed. Very heavy with substantial road noise and poor door seals. Massive acceleration yes and good storage for shopping etc but badly built and plasticky. The central screen is a major distraction and takes your eyes off the road to do simple things like adjust heating select wiper mode etc. As dangerous as using a mobile phone when driving. Charging them was often a major detour from the destination and contributed to long journeys. More cars charging slower the charge. Don't talk about those who have gone shopping for an hour whilst charging their car in the mall with only two chargers. They suck in the real world.

Excellent piece James. Well reasoned, and giving voice to a number of significant issues that I bet many people haven't considered, because they aren't often mentioned in the media. Your primary point, that the best car for each person, both financially, and environmentally, massively depends on their usage, and personal circumstances is bang on. This 'one size fits all' approach by governments is not being driven (pardon the pun) by a desire to offer a real world solution.

Then two days later said you can not charge your EV between 4pm and 9pm. It is all about freedom. You will not have the freedom to just get in your car drive when and where you want. That and the cost of a new EV, you will only drive when you have to not when and where you want to.

EVs being a bit heavier on there tires also contributes to the huge amount of noise pollution you hear in cities and from main roads. The myth that EVs are quieter only applies of you sit in them or are travelling below 20mph. When an Audi E-tron (SUV) for example, goes past you at 30mph you can almost feel it, it has as much tire noise as a loaded van or HGV.

We had a huge discussion over EV or hydrogen but the company had already decided. As of 2019 when I retired the Leaf 60kw battery was manufactured in the USA and imported. . It was and still is very expensive and still doesn't make a profit and no mainstream manufactured EV does. Access to lithium is a dirty business and can be weaponised and don't get me started on cobalt. The Prius was a good attempt but Toyota knew it was emissions negative on an E2E basis. The other thing that I think needs to be nipped in the bud with EV's is the scummy practice of additional features being deactivated remotely. I've heard of a lot of people buying a second hand EV with all the bells and whistles (and paying appropriately more for them relative to a more basic model) only to find that a few months down the road, after an update, that a lot of these features have been locked out because the new owner hasn't paid the manufacturer for them despite the feature not being an obvious subscription based service. This is a problem not only for the buyer but it puts the seller at a disadvantage because they can't price their feature specced car (things it does rather than the trim, wheels, paint etc.) for any more than a basic model.

I can't believe that this video is over 44 minutes long. It had me so engrossed that the time just flew by. A perfect explanation of the current situation. Like you I live in a rural location and here a car is not a choice, it is a requirement. Our three cars are all petrol powered because the scarcity of charge points in this part of the country simply rules out an EV. I would also have to spend far more to get the same quality of vehicle if it is an EV and that is just not going to happen. I care greatly about the climate and my family does a great deal to try and minimise the impact we have on this earth but it has to be balanced with other factors. Most people are intelligent enough to make the right decisions. I just wish the Government would wake up and realise this.

I disagree. I have left a far too lengthy comment somewhere here where I try to address points where I thought he was a little unfair but you cannot properly respond in a few paragraphs. My main point is that we cannot ever be non-polluting as long as we want to keep making stuff (a point that JM himself made). We do want our cars, they will never be completely non-polluting, what do we do? We move to the point where we are making things in a sustainable way. How do we do it? We need energy and materials. Materials we have little choice over until we start mining asteroids or some such far distant dream. All we can do here is be as ecological and ethical in our mining (for example) as possible. Energy we can do more about. We are fast increasing the proportion of renewable electricity in our grids and finding better ways of powering processes where electricity is currently not an option. We can get to a point where the planet can absorb and cope with our demands on it (I hope) and this will then be sustainable. Where can an ICE car fit into this? I don't believe it can. Anything that has to burn fossil fuel is never going to come close to sustainable. It doesn't matter how old it is and how distant a memory the energy used to make it is, to run it, you have to burn stuff and release sequestered carbon and particulates and NOX and all of the other toxic stuff that even the newest and cleanest ICE cars still release. I know that EVs are not perfect and that they apparently shred their tyres faster than ICE cars (not in my experience, but I wouldn't swear to it, it just 'feels' the same to me as any previous cars I've owned), but you cannot keep pouring fossil fuels into a car and burning it and make any sensible claim that this is less damaging than a fully recyclable car that can run on sustainable electricity and creates a couple of kilos of tyre dust in a year compared to tonnes of exhaust pollutants.

Here in the States, you can buy a late model Tesla with under 10,000 miles for under market value due the owners becoming fed up with frequent breakdowns and poor build quality. There's also plenty of older models with under 50,000 miles being sold by the 4th or 5th owner for really cheap prices since the cost of repairs is astronomical. Those can only be done at Tesla's service centers that charge a labor rate of $300 per hour and one has to take their word that whatever they did was actually needed. What's odd is that Tesla has accounted for 70% or more of new EV sales in the US for the past 20 years. What's not odd is the US public having no interest in owning an EV or hybrid for the past 20 years. Hawaii has the most registered BEV's on the road with .89%. California accounts for 40% of annual new BEV's sales yet only .38% of their registered vehicles are those. Texas has been the second largest market with only .24% of registered vehicles being BEV's.

@@billwilson3609 I don’t have any facts or figures like you’ve got but what I can say from my perspective is EV’s account for a fraction of the vehicles on the road in the here and now. For the average joe, it’s just not affordable in buying, charging or maintaining them when you can spend 5k on an older petrol/diesel that will get you about frugally. Even better is Britain has many collieries, street houses and apartments which cannot sustain that many chargers and being realistic public transport couldn’t cope with the honest Brit worker who gets £10 per hour, family to feed, bills to pay and one basic holiday per year. Many people would lose their right to drive as they’d be priced out of ownership which in turn means they can’t get work as easily which many job advertisements state “must have access to own transport” I can’t see how it goes ahead until they get more reliable, charge a lot quicker, cheaper maintenance and more importantly more chargers which can account for every household

@@xRoRox The only way Tesla has stayed in business was by receiving state and federal subsidies along with having investors willing to pump money into the company when it was operating at a loss year after year. The Big Automakers and start-ups wouldn't be producing BEV's if they weren't being subsidized by governments since they sell each vehicle at a loss. The BEV's cost an average of $12,000 more to produce than the comparable IC model and can't add all of that expense to the price tag. They'll be forced to stop production of BEV's once governments stop subsidizing the manufacturing of vehicles that nobody is interested in buying. Investors are currently selling their holdings in companies producing BEV's since their operating losses have increased due to the shortage of chips and materials for battery production. The automakers have orders for BEV's that can only be produced in limited numbers due to the shortage with those on the waiting lists becoming irate when the manufacturers increase the purchase price to cover the additional costs for scarce parts and materials. Many are cancelling their order to buy something else and they're not BEV's. The average worker over here prefer owning older vehicles that have a good track record of being reliable and can be repaired at a reasonable cost by a shop or themselves. Parts for those are easy to find at salvage yards, auto parts outlets and the dealerships since so many are still on the road. Those also are easier to sell in the used car market if they're running or not due to that. None are interested in owning an used BEV since those can only be repaired at the dealerships at great expense plus are extremely difficult to sell in the used car market when their basic and powertrain warranties have expired. Many go online to find vehicles for sale by owner and see used BEV's being sold for cheap as parts cars due to the manufacturers no longer producing replacement parts for those models due to low sales numbers. I live in East Texas where most public charging stations are along the interstates outside a motel chain. A few dealerships have one that go unused since those are only available during business hours. A few cities have public charging stations that few use due the cables being stolen by thieves and thugs driving by to see who's getting a charge and sometimes robbing them. Our dealerships give prospective BEV buyers a pamphlet about the charging requirements for the vehicle, the type of chargers that are available, if those need to hard wired to the service panel with a dedicated circuit along with advice to bring in a licensed electrician to see if the amperage needed was available at the panel or if the service ran to the house needed to be enlarged to accommodate the charger. All of that creates an additional cost to purchase a BEV that many can't afford. Back in 2008, some auto industry analysts said the only way BEV's would gain any popularity is when owners could get their recharged in the same time it took to fill a gas tank with the fast charger stations located at the gas stations owned by the major oil companies since those are placed in prime locations. I believe that will happen since all of their new stations going up in my area have plenty of unused space left on the lots. Back then they were also discussing how graphene batteries will replace lithium batteries since those are lighter in weight and be made smaller yet hold a greater charge plus be fully recharged in a short period of time. The only thing holding those back was extremely high cost to produce the graphene. Fairly recently, a research lab has found a method to produce graphene at a greatly reduced cost in small batches so now are trying to figure out how to do that on an industrial scale.

The one thing I reckon you missed/omitted is the future cost of electricity to everyone, not just EV owners. I keep seeing ads from electricity companies offering cheap rates to EV owners and I've seen on forums EV owners complaining that they should be paying less for electric, yet they still have the sort of money to go out and buy one of these, and they don't have to pay road tax (VED). More to the point, what about as more and more EVs hit the roads? There is already talk of possible blackouts this winter and that's due to current supply issues with oil and gas, but ignoring that, there isn't enough infrastructure being built to supply even more electric. That leads to supply and demand, and with a higher demand, that means higher prices, and it won't just be for those with EVs. It will be for everyone, whether you drive an EV, a petrol, a diesel, a hybrid or don't even have a car. The cost of electricity is going to go through the roof and everyone will be paying extra for it. So much for a green future.

The best use case model is a PHEV, giving 30 miles of EV range and then internal combustion after that, but it's almost as if car manufacturers don't want to give us those, they only make large PHEVs. A Fiat 500 sized PHEV would be great

You may be right but when everyone did not understand and just wanted EVs to replace diesel they didn't want EVs with 35miles of range and demanded more. So Tesla made longer range cars and now Tesla is thought to be the best EV car brand - funny that isn't it in a sad sort of way.

Great take on things Jay. One thing to add that no one is talking about, the national grid. As a new house builder we are asked if we propose to put a charger in when we apply for a new supply. We are also being told that the without massive improvements to the grid we will soon, very soon run out of capacity and NO one in authority is even thinking about addressing this. Yet again policy without any sort of plan. I guess in about 12 months we will start to be refused car chargers. Then where will the EV policy be. I can feel a U TURN coming on.

Oh, somebody’s lying... The Grid is growing at 4% per year; EV’s are growing at 2% per year. And the big strain on our current grid is AIR CONDITIONING. So, that’s only during the height of the summer, and then only during the day. When do we charge our EV’s? AT NIGHT. How long does it take? Less than an hour. How much power do you need? About as much as baking a cake in an electric oven. I’m thinking these stories about the Grid are “gaslighting”. You know the term, right? The Gas Light companies fought Thomas Edison, trying to scare people away from using electric lights. Hmm. Who won THAT fight? Oh, yeah. Thomas Edison did. Because lies don’t fool everybody.

The extra pollution from an older car is nothing compared to the damage of making one from scratch. If everyone could have a cheap smaller battery electric to run errands and a gas car for long trips things will work out. Being forced to rely on one energy source leaves us vulnerable to shortages. Many battery fires seem to come from shocks and vibration causing shorts in the connection between cells. This causes fires while charging...or in storage. This is from e bike hearsay but now I'm thinking of keeping things outside and away from structures. Been thinking about a lead acid battery system with a large electrolyte reservoir. Fueling stations could recharge the electrolyte using solar,wind or grid. We can make our own fuel cheaply without lithium. Every house could have an electrolyte tank storing energy off solar for night and refueling the car.

I think you've offered a very well rounded view J. This is one of the reasons I enjoy watching your channel. I'm both an excited car enthusiast but also supportive for the new EV wave and agree, a 1-size-fits-all approach is not the best way forward. I'm in Australia, and looking at our version of AutoTrader, I see that the 10 year mark is very interesting. We have approx 168k cars listed, but only approx 60,0000 listed which are more have travelled more than 100,000km. Add in the age factor of nothing newer than 2012, leaves about 30,000 or about 18% of all listings which could be converted into what could be considered a future emissions positive used EV car market, unless they become worthless after 10 years due to battery failures. Take back out the 10 year age rule, and back to 60,000. Or just under a third. If batteries prove to last longer then this is a fair chunk of cars going the furtherest way to reducing the emissions in comparison to internal combustion. I'll support those who won't drive their EVs long enough distance because ultimately, it brings more options to the market at lower prices that others can afford. Only time will tell! 👍

Finally, someone who understands it's horses for courses. I drive 20k per year for work. Until recently an EV wasn't viable for me due to range & initial purchase cost. My work car has traditionally been a diesel & as a 'tool for a job' it is ideal. Recently I swapped it for an EV, it was a huge step into the unknown, but I've had experience of a Zoe ZE40 and other than it's limited range, it was actually a really good car. And I thought that if the range was there, an EV might just work for me, providing it was relatively affordable. So, with my lease on the diesel coming to an end, I did a little research & have gone for the longest range EV available at the point of order (14 months ago). It boiled down to a Mach-e or a Tesla 3 or Y. In the end it was literally the one tgat, on paper at least, went the furthest - Ford won the day. It arrived 2 months ago & so far at least, it's working out fine - 4500miles done to date & it gets me pretty much wherever i need to go on one charge, with a stop on the way home to put just enough miles on to get me there. So far at least, this works for me. It won't work for everyone. I am happy doing the mundane work miles on electrons & will keep my weekend fun driving petrochemical. For me at least, a perfect combination. Let's see how the Mustang does in the winter though...

You didn't mention old tech. As EVs get older, the on board tech will either become obsolete or break. Either way, if a screen breaks, it renders a car unuseable. Who will want to fix this for more than the cars worth, and then still have old tech? They are way more disposeable than ICE (clockwork) cars. Many simply will not reach their Co2 lifetime.

Interesting video Great idea regarding K cars - I could see a company such as Caterham could be in a position to develop a small, lightweight, cheap, and fun runaround There is also the option that exists in France, where a quadricycle is exempt from a car license - and you have some interesting cars like the Citroen Ami, which Citroen say you can lease for only £19.99/month Where longer range is required the gap could be filled with more pay-by-the-hour lease companies, which have cars with longer range (whether hybrid or EV) Regardless of green credentials, we could be in the cusp of something exciting if we can collectively get over our range anxiety, and embrace smaller, more efficient, cheaper vehicles like the Ami

I checked the prices of used EVs in Norway to see if the value holds up. 16 Tesla S had driven more than 200 000 km. Oldest from 2013 and the newest from 2017. Prices from 24 000 - 39 000 Euro. These cars retain their value better than an equally priced Mercedes, and will most likely have driven a longer distance when being scrapped. The same seems also to be the case with other EVs.

Exept that it is bullocks, it is much cheaper to charge. 31 eurocents per Kwh AC charging, my Model Y does 155Wh per Km, that is 0,155x0.31 = 5 cents per Km or 7.7 Euro cents per mile, so 450 miles would cost you €34.81 or 30.60 British Pounds Supercharging has gone up to 70 cents now, so if you would do 100% supercharging That would cost you (70/31)*30.60 = 69 british pounds, so about the same as you pay right now for petrol for your civic. But you would never do that as a driving school, you probably charge overnight at the AC charger at home, or like me at the public AC charging pole in the street, and that would be sufficient to get through the day driving.. or you top it up at a fast charger during your lunch break. So if you even use partly fast charging to get through the day, it still would be much cheaper to charge than to fill up with petrol. Also this price for supercharging is extremely high for Tesla, I do not expect this will remain so high and will come down as soon as prices for electricity come down and normalize. It is all caused by the high price of gas, while the price of wind and solar has not changed, once Putin is defeated and gas prices turn back to normal, price of electricity will come down too

Absolutely on the money, for too long politicians, in particular, have sought a quick solution to what is a complex problem. The only thing I would add is that public transport needs to be fully integrated and better thought through, so it provides another option for some journeys. Part of the solution could be to use private transportation less, which even with an old tech diesel, would be better ‘for the planet’ overall than a new tech EV.

EV charging even at best rates is hardly cheaper than a petrol or diesel car so that's not in the mix now. By a £5k diesel estate and you can do 500 miles in a day without much problem. Buy a £50k EV and it will much more difficult. In urban areas, the plan is to get rid of all cars whatever they are powered by. Once EV's are taxed by the mile, the financial saving will disappear. Just own and drive what makes you happy.

The weight and size of a car does very little to help congestion in cities. Low income households would be helped a lot more if the dependence on cars (even in big cities) would be decreased. IC Engines are close to optimal and are on their way out. Electric Cars have a lot of improvement still ahead of them and the Chinese manufacturers are showing it right now, with large scale implementation of LFP Batteries improving safety and longevity across brands. Are electric cars a big risk right now because of bad design; no doubt they are yes. The decision to delay the development of this technology to this day was a really bad idea and we pay the price right now with hastily implemented environment regulations and helpless manufacturers. If you do something fast (because we now have to) mistakes are more likely. But to then think this is the best reaction to that, is just plane ignorant. What did you mention to improve the situation. Buy smaller cars - well people buy what they want (often bigger because of perceived safety) Dont make cars so expensive because they are essential - well then, how the .. did we come here? Dont let you get yourself in a resource dependency with a unstable governments - thats not really a argument isnt it, the alternative is a resource you have to get and use it once (to burn it) how is this better to using a material in a chemical process around a 1000 times before it can be recycled? Nuclear - thats a valid option for a lot of experts as well yes, and i support that Its not the propulsion thats the problem

Another big problem with madating EVs by 2030 as so many countries have done (mostly as a virtue signal) is the problem of Lithium. We currently do not have a sixth of the Lithium being mined required to replace all new cars with EVs, even if all the proposed mining schemes that exist are approved - and many are not, ironically often on the basis of environmental concerns. And we hear a lot about how Lithium batteries can be recycled, which is partially true, the Lithium in batteries can be recycled to be used in greases, pharmaceuticals and other products but not into Lithium pure enough to be used in batteries. There is not one recycling plant in the world that can do that, and Lithium recycling is not economic unless heavily subsidised by government, and its arguable if there is a market for the Lithium in the volumes likely to be available once use of EVs kicks in. Most battery recycling actually makes its money from Cobolt and other minerals extracted from a few types of batteries, not necessarily the types used in cars. So we can expect 100% uptake in EVs will result in the stripmining of huge areas of the earth, probably in valuable ecosystems, by countries less worried about rare species and the welfare, safety and human rights of the people doing the mining than they are about selling the Lithium ores.. But people in Kensington will be able to feel good, because they are doing their part.
