the Fender American Ultra Telecaster - Ryan Davey is borrowing my PRS SE Hollowbody Piezo, and asked if I wanted to check out this guitar. It's obviously a much more modern flavoured instrument than I would normally go for. Here's the first few notes with it and some thoughts on it!

I have this guitar, but cobra blue, maple neck. I was always focused on vintage sound and feel.. this changed everything for more. Tone is unbelievable , and the neck is one of my favourites.. beautiful guitar.

I have the impression that the Ultra concept shines more in the Tele than in the Strat. Tried an Ultra Tele and was amazing

same here, same exact guitar. went into my local Russo's to try a bare bones player series since i've never had a Tele before...then I tried the american one that's around $1700...then i said screw it, let's try the ultra......played the ultra for like 30 min straight...switched back to try the other two, and went nope...Ultra it is. $2k it is......lol. only thing i hate about ALL new fenders, is the grounding noise. my player plus jazz bass does the same thing. they're not shielded, and noiseless pickups are great for 60 cycle hum, but unless you're touching something metal on the guitar, it buzzes like crazy. the jazz is worse because of the active EQ. but it's just crazy, my american performer P-bass is 100% silent. don't know why an American Ultra wouldn't be.....but i tried an american ultra jazz bass too, same exact issue. don't get it.

I was a strat guy for years, until trying a telecaster. I have this model as well in sunburst. So versatile as well as reliable. This model and the player plus Nashville are my gigging guitars of choice.

I like the look a lot. Tones sounded telecastery enough, but I’m financing myself liking 7.25” radius and bigger necks than modern, not baseball bats, but round vintage feeling necks.

I’ve been enjoying my telecaster of late. There’s something about the feel of it. Actually, I think it might be because it’s my only 25 1/2 inch scale guitar with no tremolo… maybe that’s what I like about it.

Mine is Cobra blue. After I changed the crap Fender Strings to DAddario 11's, it came to life. Neck is incredible.

In my case, I went the other way. By that I’m mean not to Vintage Telecasters but too earlier in this series, specifically, the Deluxe series a few generations earlier. I prefer the meatier C shape neck of that iteration to the flat D of the Ultra. I replaced the neck pick up with a Lindy Fralin custom pickup and left the old N3 on the bridge. It retains all the good modern Telecaster features like bevelled edges to the neck, locking, pick ups belly, cut and, most importantly, for me and body with translucent, thin paint. Sounds and feels great for a fraction of the price which is a nice bonus but not the main reason. I just prefer that iteration of modern Tele. The body on mine is slightly thicker than the Ultra’s quite thin body, so feels more substantial while still being comfortable. Everybody has their favourites of course and more power to you if you chose the Ultra.

I just bought this same guitar. I think it's the perfect guitar. I was never a traditional telecaster guy but I'm the last four years I've bought and sold five... squire affinity which I hated, CV 50,s, American performer, American pro II, and now this. This by far is my favorite. Maybe because I prefer more modern guitars versus the old tele canoe paddle. All of my American teles sounded fantastic... just slightly different depending on your taste. The ultra is just more refined. I don't think I'll ever sell this one. Sounds great...and feels and likes phenomenal. I actually love the neck and pickups. I do notice that the neck pickup on my performer was clearer and more magical than any other... but I prefer the overdrive tone on the ultra... overall I prefer the ultra fit almost everything...

I bet the neck is like a Flying V, I once owned, it had such a unique D shape neck, it was easy to do a A comboy chord with 3 fingers STACKED, which I had never been or done before great spacing.

Can I say something controversial? I think all the gen4 noiseless pickups (Tele or Srat, at least) have quite a vintage flavour to them... I know they are NOT vintage but they don't sound too modern to my ears, either. They lack that punchy top end you would expect.

I use the elite (strat) which is the predecessor to the ultra. I believe mine is a 2017? I like it, I find myself banging on the Chinese Squier telecaster far more.

I had an ultra telecaster and it was the best feeling guitar in my hands I've ever had. I hated the pickups though and swapping them was not an option so I had to let it go.

I have an American deluxe and an American Elite tele (the previous incarnations of the ‘modern tele) and swapped pickups on both for Monty’s. With a extra piece of wire to the neck pickup you can still use the S1 switch (or 4 way blade if people have those). I love the comfort and necks on these and they make the new PRS MK and NS53 look quite pricey.

​@@BkBk-gy6vr for me personally it was a really expensive guitar and I didn't want to hurt the resale value. If you plan on keeping it long term then yes actually it's a really good guitar to swap pickups on because everything else about it is so good.

I have an Ultra Strat. If you can get on with the neck, it's a spectacular guitar. I expect the same is the case with the Tele.

I agree - it's a phenomenal piece of kit and the neck is lovely - tried an American Pro II and the American original and they didn't come close. The Player Plus was surprisingly good too. As for your playing of the Ultra it looks as though you've really settled into a very comfortable groove John - interested to hear if it grows on you over a bit more time with it!
