I have a 370litre tank which would be best to use a fluval 407 or this fx4 please.i also have a discus tank

Also if I changed my fluval 407 to this fx4 how can I do it without a bacteria bloom as I have discus in my tank as the media is different shapes inside the 407 and fx4 isn’t it

Would be FX6 to much for 180l turtle tank with like 80-100l water or should i take FX4?
@pondlifeaquaticsАй бұрын
Turtles can be quite messy to keep. Personally I always overspec any aquarium i'm going to build so if you can afford the fx6 and have the space then you'll be glad of it.

How are you maturing the new system? I stopped freshwater some time ago as moved to marine/reef - but we almost always just use bacteria in a bottle to pre-seed the tanks, and it can wittle it down to a matter of a few days - and then you also know you only get the bacteria you want colonising most of the spaces. Thought there would be something for freshwater like this at this point?

Good question, we are using a product called Filter Medium by Aquadip and Stability by Seachem. Additionally there is a pre seeded filtration system that was going to be used alongside the FX4 to seed it from the tank the discus are coming from. All stuff I should've mentioned in the video, I'm still quite new to making videos on this channel and didn't script anything so forgot to mention that. Think in future I'll definitely script everything out to be more thorough! Thanks for watching, I hope you stick around to watch more and see how everything develops 🙏

Is lava rock safe to use?

safe to use in what sense?

If you get ride of the stupid red baskets you can fit more media in, you will find the sponges on the outside should be replaced with some medium and finer sponges puttting in media in the side where the sponges should be will only clog up the media, also use a large course intake sponge will stop alot of mess going into the filter in the first place, anyway that's my experience with the FX4 in a large cichlid tank. one more thing carbon is only good for a couple of months and should be replaced if not it will leach back in the things it removed if the first place and could make your tank crash, puragen is a much better and safer product. cheers.

Honestly I was worried about the outlet if i removed the red structures but i'll definitely take your word for it. I haven't had any issue with clogging so far and have really only had minimal waste being drained off the bottom each week. I guess discuss are much less messy than cichlids though so that may be it? Love Purigen and will most likely use it in the future, I personally find that Red Sea Carbon, if you're willing to replace it regularly, is one of the single best removal products on the market. I've used it in koi ponds to help bring down heavy metal poisoning before and have had amazing success with it. The chemistry reaction from it is genuinely best in class. Cheers to you!

How come you don’t use any mechanical filtration in the fx4?
@pondlifeaquatics2 ай бұрын
I left a small amount of mechanical. I realised I don't mention it in the video. We have another fluvial 405 with mechanical filtration being added on with a prefilter attachment possible addition in the future. Honestly I'd be okay with how it is now anyway. My filtration at home is literally half a sliver of a sponge and then an ungodly amount of seachem matrix. I'm a firm believer that bio filtration is the most important factor in a filter and keeping waste down can largely be achieved through water changes
@aquablaster86Ай бұрын
@pondlifeaquatics9796 you do realize the water flow pattern of this filter, right? The white sponge you threw out is the mechanical filtration, which the water passes thru first. Getting physical waste out before it reaches the bio media in the center. Removing all mechanical media just means your biological media will become clogged and much less efficient way faster. It's your filter and you can set it up however you like, but you should probably mention this if you are going to advise new people how to properly set one up first.

This or Oase biomaster?
@pondlifeaquatics2 ай бұрын
I've not had my hands on the biomaster 2 yet so I'd not like to comment. However the original biomasters are great. I did have several issues with them sucking air. The benefit of having the prefilter and heater is fantastic but they are slightly less reliable than an FX in my opinion. Plus the auto refill on the FX is invaluable if you don't have access to things like a cobra or refill system. In conclusion both are great, it depends on the aquarium. Sorry if that's wishy washy. 🙏

Where did you get that giant T-Rex skull?

It's cool innit. We got them from a company at a road show. I think we have one dry still. If you like I can find out the details and get a product page made up and send you the link later 😁

I do not have a favorite filter other than the OASE and whenever I can justify buying another filter I will get this FX 4 . Since I appreciate the available gravel cleaner that hooks up to the canister allows you to get some of the muck without draining the water. Lastly I know that some people have a problem with seeing equipment on or inside the aquarium but I think they would like the ridiculous amount of nastiness from entering the main filter by using the EHEIM pre filter , especially when cracking open the FX isn't the most time friendly situation.

I'll get that done today for you 🙂

I was actually planning on a video discussing prefilters and filter attachments in their forms. I was debating putting an inline prefilter and an additional inline heater. Don't get me wrong I love the oase biomasters, they were my go to for a very long time, I just had a couple of build quality issues with them. That being said, a lot of my clients still run them and they're very good.
