I would say the race last year should be considered as "standard" for the sport, not really great but something that should be expected. especially considering that this track is actually designed for racing, unlike, say Monaco which by design (or lack thereof), is expected to produce boring races. The only reasons we find the race "exciting" back then were because - the track is notorious for being boring in the first place, fans came in with low expectation by default and where quite surprise when some things actually happened, and - the sport suffers from the lack of competition during the long years of mercedes domination, fans are thirsting for anything that remotely looks entertaining back then, especially if it involves the defeat of Mercedes.

It is NOT a bad track at all, not an amazing one, but not an awful one! First thing: We only had 3 GPs there, an average one (2018), an boring one (2019) and an amazing one (2021). People shouldn't judge track quality by such a small amount of races. Look at Baku, for example, in 2016 the race was terrible and the whole internet hated the track, suddenly the famous race of 2017 came and they already put the track as a fan favorite. Second thing: The track layout is kind of reasonable. It has a bit of a bad flow in sector 1, yes, but it has good overtaking opportunities on both parts of the Mistral straight (so much so that the 2021 French GP it was the second most overtaking race in the season), and it has a very fun sequence of high corners in sector 3, (without the Tilke's formula of tight curves and short radius). Third thing: people's hatred for this track, and I understand that perfectly, is that it's bad for the eyes with the blue and red stripes. Also, the circuit does not make a good separation of layouts, which is also visually disturbing. Fans unfortunally tend to confuse an ugly track with a bad layout track, but you can't blame them for that...

Actually, I enjoy driving Paul Riccard on the F1 game, as it is a challenging layout with some slow corners in Sector 1 and a very tricky traction zone before the main straight in Sector 2, followed by the Chicane du Nord which splits the Mistrale straight into two parts. A good exit there sets you up for a possible overtake into the flat out right hander. The last sector has some flowing corners you need to absolutely nail to get any sort of lap time, however you can’t run to much downforce, as the main straight and the run from the Chicane du Nord down to turn 11 will punish a too draggy set up heavily. It’s a challenge for the car and the driver, as well as finding the right balance in set up. You want rotation bit a too aggressive suspension is likely to spin you out through turns 6 and 12 especially and maybe even turns 1 and 2, but you want to avoid understeer without adding downforce.

How to fix the french GP: 1. The racing: The racing can be easily fixed by choosing the first configuration for the first corner (flat out S corner). Cars can follow better then so that the next chicane becomes an overtaking spot. The rest of the circuit is actually pretty good to overtake and follow. I don't actually understand why they haven't tried this, since it's already there. 2. Asphalt The amount of asphalt should be reduced, especially with the blue lines which causes headaches in some people. Asphalt reduces the tension of the watcher and drivers, where they can easily go off track. Add more gravel and grass instead and some corners will become iconic.

The FIA, F1 and Paul Ricard should look at switching up the track year by year there's 100+ layouts why not use them. You could have 10 different layouts over 10 years for some drivers that's their entire career. So they may never see the same track twice

Unfortunately, there is no real Grand Prix circuit with character and tradition in France. That's why France has had a lot of different circuits for French Grand Prix over the time.. whether it's Reims, Rouen, Clermont-Ferrand, Le Mans (GP), Dijon, Le Castellet or Magny Cours. Neither track could really last long. Of all the circuits I would prefer Dijon-Prenois. By the way, Spain has the same problem with the Barcelona circuit. It is also more of a test track in terms of character.

After extensive thought and analysis and a grand total of 5 whole minutes spent on formulating this hypothesis, I have come to the conclusion that the primary characteristic for any track that makes it interesting is elevation change. Paul Ricard is unfortunately flat as a board with the exception of one hump at turn 1. I think that's why it's so boring.
@on_wheels_802 жыл бұрын
So then Silverstone would be absolutely terrible because there is no noteworthy elevation change. And the Red Bull Ring would be great for F1 because it's on a hillside.

@@Mike23443 Problem then, because that doesn't reflect reality at all - and I do love rollercoaster circuits. Another examples: Laguna Seca would be really quite poor for F1, because it has exactly two overtaking spots. Monaco has dead boring races, the whole event could really end right after qualifying.

@brewedcoffee7272 жыл бұрын
I personally like it.. i like the colours and danger zones. I lke that if you go off track you dont automatically go out of the race like hitting a wall, stuck in gravel and so on and so forth. You simply lose time and tyres get worn out more in the red areas. So it's good for racing and cost cap.
@siddhantdive54832 жыл бұрын
I was also too harsh on this track but then I played it on f1 2020 on 100 AI it seemed fun and corner entry speed is super fast in sector 1 and 3 so dive bombing was fun given the wide track, although that was in previous gen cars. I think this gen cars can produce more intense racing as the layout will suit these type of cars. Let's hope for the best and wait for Sunday.

I think the fact that the entire thing is a giant slob of asphalt probably makes it a bit dull. Sure, it has fancy colors and many different track layouts but that all gets quite confusing very quickly and while the track itself is, in my opinion, about as average as it is possible. It's not something you'll remember or dream racing in.

First I have to say that I’m french. I think that Le Castellet is a good track but with a bad exploitation of its potential. But it’s clearly not ghe best racetrack that we have and even if a comeback to most of the previous ones (17 with the gp held before f1 if I remembrer well) is impossible we still have better options like Magny-Cours obviously (even if it’s not the best part of France…) Personally I just want the french gp to remain on the calendar bc of course it’s an historical one (1906) but I’m also so happy to have a national gp so it doesn’t really matter to me if the race is not the best ever as long as we r represented. 😪 Plus I think that most of f1 fans would rather see this track than a Las Vegas or a Saudi Arabia… Sry for the long comment but I had to say this. Ps: ppl may also have been judging it to quickly considering that only 3 races were held since the comeback…

I'm very bad at naming corner names but I do know The Mistral straight, I believe it is iconic ( to me at least as a French fan). It's confusing and the colors hurt my eyes but other than that it's an ok track. And as we saw last year, it can produce a really good race.

If you drive it it's an amazing track. In a GT car the flowing right-hander after the long straight is an exercise in bravery and track limits.

My opinion on this track has changed quite somewhat. I agree with what the drivers say in that it's not the best track in France (Magny-cours for the win), however, it's not a bad or boring track to race on. I, like many others, often criticised the track because I never really gave myself the chance to study it properly. However, since playing it on F1 22 on my racing SIM and actually learning the track at a competitive level, made me realise that actually it's quite decent to drive when you hook up a good lap. There's some good opportunities for dive bombing which is what we all want to see at the end of the day. So, to conclude... it is in fact a great track to drive and race on although F1 could do better with bringing back the OG of France...

I think it’s perfectly adequate, and better than some. A solid midfield track, if you will. It’s given us 2 very good races, especially in the midfield, and seems well-suited to the new cars. I don’t have an issue with the multi-multi-multi-use configurations, since we have a lot of that here in the US. I think any purpose-built tracks should have a variety of configs, since it means multiple classes and series can use it throughout the year. Benefits fans and the local economy both. That said, the paint job is too jarring for TV. It’s not a bad **idea** to do all the stripes in the runoffs, and it’s probably pretty cool in person when you’re not moving about, but it’s not overhead shot or broadcast-friendly at all.
