Ferrari are probably gonna turn up their engines to the max mode and take an extra penalty later in the season just so they have the advantage at Monza. Something I am wondering which I feel have been forgotten about because of Mercs "terrible" season. When the teams rocked up at pre season testing, first event Merc had a normal car and then at Bahrain they showed up with their innovative design. Everyone were so excited about their sidepod-less design that would produce so little drag, but now everyone is talking baout how slow and draggy the Merc is. What gives?

It really depends on what the teams can run to optimize their laptimes, lower drag, lower downforce on a very fast circuit like Monza can be key but you still have to balance everything, so in my opinion in Monza we are gonna see the hugest differences of pace between teams, accounting for the Sprint Race and the grid penalties that might occur we are gonna get an exciting weekend ahead of us, with loads of overtakes made easier by the drs. None the less it's a RedBull 1-2, that thing has a cx of a mosquito.

@@russell6075 maybe that’s a good thing. Too many easy overtakes are just dull, and cars not being able to follow closely just doesn’t get exciting. @voidsax
@voidsax 2 жыл бұрын
@@mscbijles1256 Ah yes, making the cars like boats is something good my god… Close racing doesn’t mean anything if you cannot overtake at the end of the straight or while cornering. Spending more than 1 lap to try and get a decent exit of the only corner that precedes a massive straight so you can easily overtake at the middle of the straight because of DRS is not fun at all mate. Whats the point of closer racing if then the slipstream is even weaker and you still need DRS because you cannot put your car alongside another at the end of the straight to try and get the overtake on the braking or while cornering. In motogp the first 10 guys are often in the same tenth, and in a lot of races you can see them switching positions constantly. And that is THE FUN of motorsports, not needing 5 laps to overtake someone and doing it because of DRS xd

Idea for replacing DRS: A mandated push to pass button which is always gives X percent more horsepower. Teams can decide themselves if they want the baseline tune to be more or less conservative. If they're more conservative then the push to pass mode can be run for a long time but the regular mode becomes a bit useless. If the baseline tune is already pretty on the limit then you want to limit your use of push to pass when it is strictly necessary. During qualifying they always run this mode which is then fixed for the entire weekend. I think this reduces the gimmick factor since the teams are back in control of when they apply it and it provides a tradeoff between the possibility of grenading your engine or having an easier time overtaking. What do you guys think?

A potential counter-point is why qualifying sessions in recent years at Monza have become a bit of a joke... If cars generate less drag, that should create less dirty air & less of a slipstream tow... However we know that's not the case at Monza. It should help serve a fascinating race, even if the logic doubles-back on itself throughout the weekend (Also, fair play Ferrari for painting their engine covers yellow to camouflage when it inevitably catches fire)

This actually misses the most important historical reason overtaking was a challenge. Gearing. F1 cars run too short of gears at Monza because this is the only track that would benefit, but others have better traction and acceleration using shorter gears elsewhere, so the top speed limitation at this track in particular is not aerodynamic, but mechanical. As the top speed has nothing to do with the aerodynamica of the car (or dramatically less so), decreasing the drag of the package doesn't help overcome the literal limitations that the cars are running peak rpm at 8th gear and just are not allowed to run faster due to engine/transmission damage risks. Toto has come flat out and said it that they could go a lot faster at Monza, but then they would suffer everywhere else, and this is also why Monza of all tracks shows the least progress from the 80/90s cars.

Short explaination of DRS train, locomotive is .5 second faster without DRS, following wagons are as fast but with DRS, things equalize themselves and no passing. That is a DRS train.

For DRS to work at Monza, you’d have run it through Curve Grande, right up to the second chicane.

What about the Gear Ratio? ⚙⚙⚙ At Monza you often see them hitting the limiter way before the end of the straight. Especially when slipstreaming. Or is this something they can't change overnight?
@a.b.8035
@a.b.8035 2 жыл бұрын
Teams cannot change the gear ratio every race. So they'll have to find a compromise that works on all circuits
@nightshadelenar
@nightshadelenar 2 жыл бұрын
the gearboxes are governed by max and minimum gear ratios, and can not be changed without making a new spec gearbox, and thus requiring to run that one as well including the penalty that comes with it. overall i think they'd rather the rev limiter over 5+ grid drop and loads of time for making that different gearbox, if they even can in the first place.
@zonoskar
@zonoskar 2 жыл бұрын
Isn't it because the gearbox ratios are fixed at the beginning of the year and cars will be running close to max rpms at Monza, so reducing drag doesn't mean the car can go any faster as the engine cannot do more rpms.

The explanation of how a headwind affects DRS in the video is the opposite of what commentator Alex Brundle said during the F2 sprint race at Zandvoort this past weekend. He said the headwind _reduced_ the effectiveness of DRS not increased it. Is someone wrong or does the nature of the headwind wind and other factors mean the wind's effect on DRS can go either way depending on the circumstances?
@giuliobaecker5476
@giuliobaecker5476 2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure what WTF1 said is true, maybe some exceptions? But you can think of it like they are going 300k two cars if there’s a 60k head wind that’s like another 60k on top. So upending the wing would have a huge effect, essentially the fast your going the bigger the effect. Does that make sense? I could be totally wrong but makes sense in my head.

Considering how important top speed is at Monza, and how fast the Red Bull is in a straight line I think we wil lhave to use a calender to measure Max's winning margin this week.

I havent watched to video, so I'm gonna shoot my shot for an explanation: Everyone is driving Monza packages anyway that reduce drag as much as possible. When you almost have no rear wing, you don't gain much by reducing even more.

I have a sneaky feeling alonso is going to create a drs train of 7 cars then pit for hards then get podium finish while ferrari amps up their power for the home race and the blow up or bottle it in the first chicane and max does a zandervoort and finishes the race 50 minutes ahead of everyone because he's a Lewis Hamilton in Brazil last year and is a maniac for speed and a champion and then albon does a jet flyby and buzzes the tower to score some topgun points in his f-14 tomcat and then suddenly comes George with the struggling car to third while lando has his own race with vettel doing his own thing and we all cheer on vettel and expect mick to do something amazing so we keep him next year and watch Daniel in 17th place sadly :( that's how I think this race will go or a red flag because Yuki gets ahead of himself bless him. Tell me what yall think😂

If I was a team like Mclaren I'd overclock the engine by 5% for qually/race and go for it. I'd rather fight for a podium 1 week and start from the back of the grid the next week. I have a feeling that all Merc powered teams might struggle to make q3. Well Merc might make it but I think it'll be closer than usual. Max will win this race by 45 seconds if there's no safety cars and he doesn't slow down toward the end to minimize risks. Lack of straight line speed has to be the most frustrating thing. Makes overtakes, even with drs open, near impossible.

Bold predictions: Ferrari will win with Carlos sainz, verstappen leads most of the race but an unexpected slow pitstop puts him behind to finish p2 with fastest lap, Perez will finish p3 with Merc securing p4 for hamitlon and p6 for russel. Norris will slot into that p5 gap while Alonso and ocon secure p7 and p8. Ferrari completely mess up leclercs race finishing p9. Taking the last point will be valteri bottas.
