Is the HANDLING Stat Important in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?

I used the no handling combo online: • How bad is NO HANDLING...
handling means turning. more handling means you can drift more sharp, and more shallow/wide. less handling makes it hard to turn, especially on 200cc. on 150cc, low handling is viable, but makes it hard to turn quickly.

Smart steering is unironically good in 200cc for certain tracks, especially if you have a mushroom on a sharp turn. But you shouldnt have it on all the time because it slows you down on turns, and can steer you away from where you want to go a lot of the time

You can turn smart steering on and off. On shy guy falls, the glider section, or while using a speed item. Using a golden mushroom during the curvy section of neo Bowser city is another good example

You can push break to slow down a drift if you need more control. You wont lose your mini turbo as long as you dont hold it down for too long

With full handeling stats if you wait to drift until the time is right and then you crank the wheel your mini turbo gets purple suuuper quickly 😊

When I did 200cc I nearly maxed acceleration, got speed down to somewhere between 1 and 1.5 bars, and had around 4 or 5 bars of handling. Ever since that’s just been my favorite build. Dry Bones for life!

Personally I use a very high handling build (F.Villager, city tripper, crimson slims) just because I like it aesthetically. And although I agree high handling can make miniturbo charging more tricky with some turns like the ribbon road shortcut, it will never really mess your line up as bad as your example if you know how to use it. If you see you’re turning too sharp, you can use the maneuverability of high handling to keep drifting wide after the turn, still get the miniturbo charge and not need to mess up your line so much. Obviously it’s still slower than just taking the turn tight with mid handling, max charging a miniturbo already and then just driving straight, but if you want to use high handling for the benefits it has or just for aesthetics like me, it can absolutely still work.

You can do a shallow drift while getting fast miniturbo with a mechanic known as softdrifting. A lot of times max handling is more than okay as long as you can softdrift properly. High handling builds are amazing IF they also have a high miniturbo stat.

I always wondered why Nintendo thought Handling was just as important as Speed. If you look at the stat distributions only Speed, Weight and Handling scale from 0-10 when changing character classes.

I always think it's funny when I see MK8 builds that prioritize speed since I usually play 200cc. My argument is always that we're playing Mario Kart, not Grand Turismo. There are very few times where you're going to be seeing a straight shot. Mario Kart is about turns and drifting. So even if my top speed is significantly lower than yours, I'm going to reach my top speed much faster after every turn, while the amount of time you'll spend at your top speed is minimal since you'll lose it at the first turn. But then I'll play 150cc, and it feels like slow motion, and I get it.

On many tracks in 200cc you want higher handling. The optimal for 150cc is probably like 9-15 handling (just a guess), and for 200cc it's higher. Low handling builds can still take every turn thanks to brake drifting, but it's really slow to brake drift all the time.
