Is the Helix Worth It When I Could Buy an HX Stomp for Less than Half the Price?

For my Presets visit: johnnathancord... The Helix is like - two HX Stomps right? In a sense, this is a good way to explain the difference in processing power, but I do tend to approach the Helix slightly differently, and view it as a much more contained ecosystem, where I can do much more experimental things....So here's why I think the Helix deserves looking at, especially if you're looking to build presets with more than one amp...

I've decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 - www.paypal.com... - I will then email you a link to both bundles!

I looked at everything, bought the Helix. Never regretted it. It is the perfect combo package. People often mention the size but really it is way smaller than even the smallest amp combo I had to drag around for years. Everything in one easy to carry unit.

I remember when the Helix came out. It was the perfect all in one floor unit. It had everything needed, all in one package. But, it was too expensive, too big, and had too many features I would never use. I ultimately went with an HX Stomp about 1.5 years ago, and it is the best and most useful piece of gear I've ever purchased. I have it connected to a separate Digitech Looper, and a 2-button DIY Controller to get access to FS4 and FS5 buttons on the Stomp.

I’ve had a Helix since 2016 and a Stomp since the month it came out, and still found this useful. Thanks!

I think the big one or LT are worth it to prevent pedal GAS. Now I got my stomp because of price. I didn’t have a pedal board and I needed an amp solution for live playing. I bought the stomp and a volume pedal. I now have a board built around it with about 5 additional pedals. Factoring in total cost, I spent the equivalent of a big helix, but I did it over time. I rarely make money playing, so the stomp was an economical solution for a bedroom hobbyist who gigs occasionally.

Love this video John. There's so much I still don't understand about my Helix. Do content like this as often as you can. Love your playing and all the other content as well. You're doing great work my friend!

Ocd on the socks! Very happy Stomp user here but can completely understand the full helix. My plan was to have it with other effects from other brands and get them controlled by a midi switcher which is what I’ve got now. I’m a home player so can understand if playing live you may want the full floor but the Stomp works great for a catch-all in the middle of my board 👍

I love the stomp. Barely scratched the surface. But I've already hit the ceiling on the processing... I tried to recreate a rig that a friend made in real life screwing around with a couple of vintage amps and a cup of vintage cabs. By the time I set up the amps and cabs I was super limited on what effects pedals I could put in the signal chain. ... That being said I definitely have not outgrown it yet. One day I'll know that I would use a helix if I had it, and on that day I'll probably just get one.

LT was a no-brainer for me… half of the time I wish I had the Stomp and the other half I wish I had the Floor 😂

I went for the full fat Helix because it's my amp, effects, etc. Is is total overkill for my needs? Yes. But I feel like it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I have no regrets. The HX Stomp is a great tool though!

Much of the time it's easier to bring 1 Helix and plug in 1 thing rather than the HX Stomp with a bunch of out board FX and a 6 switch midi as I use the stomp. The stomp with a ventris reverb, boss dd200 and ehx pitch fork and mc6ii midi is still lighter but I have to have 5 things to plug in plus 2 midi cables so lots of spaghetti lead explosion, and time to set it up (I don't use a proper fixed pedal board as it's my modular setup with FX constantly changing around the hx stomp). But helix does it all now there are poly pitch fx

John, the contrast in the HD stomp being about the size of the DISPLAY on the helix was brilliant. I did not really have a sense of how massive the size component of the decision is between the two I still want all the features and switches that the helix has but at that size it might not be something I throw in the car so I have something all in one to play while away on a vacation road trip to visit family. Which is definitely one use I am going to have for it every year. Maybe HX stomp XL and expression pedal(s) is the way to go. OR maybe the HELIX 2 or HX 2 series is gonna drop in the next year and all this will change lol.

For me the helix best plus point is the io Running 2 mono synths and a drum module plus bass or guitar whilst changing everything in control centre is a massive amount of power Try vocals through the helix 😊 BVs in key with smart harmony Stereo piano with pads in key triggered by midi note and acoustic guitar Worth every penny to me. Crazy that I never really considered that setup. I use my synths/grooveboxes much more than my guitar these days but I'm getting back into it. Having the helix as a brain for everything sounds awesome.

Come on, John. Just when I was comfortable with my Stomp you make me wonder if it would all be simpler to keep everything in one. No more pedalboard arranging cable routing... You have me thinking about things that I didn't want to think about.

Interesting discussion. If I got a full Helix I'd want it to cover microphone processing as well more elaborate guitar sounds as I couldn't transport a Helix as well as everything else. I'd probably be wishing for three not two processors. Size of the HX Stomp makes it so much more versatile because I can travel without a car.

Nice video. I upgraded from HX Stomp to Helix LT and I have 8 snapshots in 1 preset for all of my songs in the band. Also, I can use heavy DSP Poly. This was worth it.

I had a hx stomp and maxed out the DSP a few times forcing a reboot, so bought a helix cause I love the ecosystem. However I’m considering selling it to get the new UAD Ruby and a few stomps.

Hi John - yes could you please add this preset into the folder. I’m interested in the way you’ve set up the snapshot/preset combinations. There are so many options but I wouldn’t mind trying this out. Really informative thanks.

Well-timed video, JC. Your channel is the reason I'm ready to jump into the modeling world. That, and I only own a small practice amp and very few pedals. I think I'm going the Helix LT route to save a few bucks but get the DSP power and flexibility. Part of me also wonders if Line 6 continue to update these things prior to the next generation, what will I potentially miss out on with limited DSP? That may be a flawed way to look at it, but it's certainly a consideration. Thanks as always for all the wonderful playing and content!

Whatever people are willing to pay is "worth". Yeah, I know, what a wisdom that was 😂 but you know, whatever musical gear has real applicable value...also translates into money if there is market demand (which will always be if there is, again, real need and therefore value). The Helix seems to still better deliver in some areas better than other units or it combines everything it does in a very good (maybe still the best) way.

You can get all the tones from the stomp you can get in the helix, I don't need 14 different stereo delays on 3 different paths.

Or you can buy the LT and get all the processing power available. I max out the DSP regularly running a wet/dry/wet rig. The hx stomp couldn’t keep up, with dual delays and dual reverbs and dual amps

At 2/3 the price, it'd be very hard to beat the LT. Tempted to put my Kemper up for local trade for one, just to try something different!

I have an LT used from Reverb that I paid $800 for. So much content for the price, really an amazing value. Edited to say that I went from HX Effects > HX Stomp > Helix LT like Goldilocks. The LT is just right!

As a follow-up to this could you walk through using two HX Stomps together please? I'm interested to hear how you find building more complex presets with the 16 blocks available across the two units compared to using the Helix - whether it's the same experience or just a major frustration/headache I've got one HX Stomp and a Morningstar MC8 which I've started programming ("bedroom" player only here) but I'm really interested in adding another (secondhand?) Stomp to do that bit extra - dual amps with more than one or two effects.... I also didn't think I'd miss my whammy pedal when I sold it but I do Always great content. Thanks

Hi John..! Hope you're well...Another wonderful video, and very useful to make you think which is the right choice. As always your playing is magic, those beautiful altered chords with delays and reverb. I wanted to ask you...I have the Helix LT,but I would like to have a smaller unit also, so I can have the LT at home for recording and the other for gigs, theatre or whatever. By the way, once I get it,can I buy you your Pod Go presets if I get the Pod Go ? I bought the Helix pack like 2 years ago. Very hard to decide which one is best for me...between HX Stomp and Pod Go...they both have good and bad things.Do you think there's a big difference apart from the fact that the Pod Go is less flexible ? Thanks ! Cheers
