Is the Hidden Kingdom of Saudi Arabia ready to open to the World? | Foreign Correspondent

The ‘hidden kingdom’ of Saudi Arabia has been mostly closed to journalists and travellers…until now.
In a glitzy PR push, the country wants to promote itself as a tourist destination. Foreign Correspondent rides the magic carpet to extraordinary sites, thousands of years old, holding mysteries archaeologists are just beginning to uncover.
It’s part of a multi-billion-dollar campaign by leader Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, to modernise the economy, diversify it away from oil dependency, and liberalise the austere, puritanical form of Islam that’s locked up the country for decades.
But will the notoriously repressive regime deliver on its promise to reform? Reporter Sam Hawley witnesses the social revolution underway, speaking with a woman uber driver, a woman scuba instructor and one of the nation’s first stand-up comedians.
The comedian explains he must operate within unwritten laws.
“We can’t go to the red lines… even if one day the government says it's okay to talk about this and that. Okay, go talk about sex, religion, whatever ’, he says. ‘If you speak about it, people won't feel comfortable. ”
But the dark side of the regime remains.
Foreign Correspondent gains a rare interview with Hatice Cengiz, the fiancé of murdered Saudi journalist Jamal Kashoggi. His brutal dismemberment by a Saudi hit squad shocked the world and still stains the country’s international reputation.
A year on, Hatice Cengiz says she lives in fear and that the world has failed to hold the Saudi government to account for the brutal killing.
Sam Hawley charts the broad clampdown on dissent and speaks with some of the country’s critics, including a Saudi prince who lives outside the country under police protection and claims he is the victim of a state-sponsored kidnap attempt.
“There are no political reforms ” , says the prince, now living overseas . “ There is no separation of powers and there is a dominance by the religious authorities over other branches of power in the state.”

Hey everyone, Here is the answers to the best questions; we appreciate all your comments and thank you for watching. Dorleys Flir Q: Why would foreign women feel safe going there on holiday when if they're Violated and report it to the police, they'd be arrested for not being married when it happened? When other indigenous women can't leave the country without consent of their male keeper through the official governmental platform? A: We reported the country is undergoing a process of reform, and opening up to tourists. One of the reforms is that Saudi women can now get passports and travel independent of male guardians. There is a feeling of optimism, but it is certainly your choice if you want to travel there or not. tubester45675 Q: ABC maybe you can ask about religious freedom for foreigners and temporary workers. Churches, Hindu temples for Indians working construction. etc A: Thanks, that’s an interesting suggestion. You may like tow right to the Saudi Embassy regarding it. Christifaa5 Q: You sent a western female celebrity reporter and met with official tour guides and rich government people and call that journalism??? No, you only saw what a western foreign tourist would see. If you want the real image of life in this shole, you have to interview locals who are facing the issues of repression, poverty, corrupt unjust judicial system, random arrest and crackdown on citizens and human right abuses we suffer from. Sorry, but this documentary was worthless and does not show any issues locals live through. A: Hi thanks for your comments. You’re right, access was limited within Saudi, and that’s why we interviewed people outside the country like Hatice Cengiz and Prince Farhan al Saud in Germany. Inside the country it's opening to tourism and we showed some of the destinations, and we also covered the human rights repressions of the regime in quite some detail. Muhammed Zahid Q: Why would you ask about Kashougi if you were going to see tourism opening its doors in there? Why would you have to ask every time and everyone when you go there? Stop asking stupid questions because many have asked it before you and it has been a long time. A: Hi thanks for your comments. The reason is because it has affected the county’s international reputation. This in turn has held back a lot of foreign investment, which Vision 2030 is hoping to attract. So the question arises: can Vision 2030 be achieved under these circumstances? Some people believe that Saudi and the reforms are the keys to the country’s future but some critics have doubts it can be successful. We have a responsibility to air both views, which we did.

@Lipton Teabag That's Fabulous news about women. How does the country stand on foreigners openly showing affiliation to another religion other than Islam? Can a Christian (or any other religion) pray openly with their hands held together (or Catholic do the cross) or read from a Bible (or equivalent) in a public space?

There is so much exotic beauty in this country, it’s landscape, it’s pre and post Islamic history, it’s importance spiritually , it’s customs, food, hospitality, dress sense. I was fortunate enough to visit Saudi Arabia a few months ago for the Riyadh Car Show (Nov 2019) as an employee of West Coast Customs. I was pleasantly surprised by how kind and loving the people of Saudi Arabia were. We were all fascinated to learn about their culture and etiquettes. If you respect the people, they'll welcome you. I felt completely comfortable throughout my entire visit; in fact, it was very amusing to see everyones shocked reactions when they saw "that group of Americans" walking through their malls. hahaha. I would love to visit again soon.

In the Quran the people that lived there were said to be cursed, which sits awkwardly with the official line in Saudi Arabia that the country is the peak of Islamic virtue. It is ridiculous censorship as it just makes the whole experience for the visitor feel like they are bed led by the nose rather than having freedom to discover things for themselves. It's actually good example of why (as someone who has worked in tourism) I feel the Saudis attempt to boost tourism is throwing good money after bad. Unless they can tackle the government need to micromanage and stage every moment of a visitors time in the country, it'll never appeal to anyone beyond those with a taste for "Dictator tourism" to places like North Korea or Turkmenistan. It's a shame as Saudi Arabia actually does have tons of things that many people would love to experience. Having the government sit on your shoulder for your entire stay isn't one of them.

Mainly because she is not a scholar of the religion and is not "authorized" to say anything religious because she represents the country and not herself. If they require a religious opinion, they could have interviewed a cleric instead. It has nothing to do with the fact that the land or civilization is cursed in the Quran. The accursed people have perished and the land is the land of God now. Theological opinions differ and the most accurate answers can only be made by clerics not tourist guides.

@Floofy shibe what is it that it is deterrring. Often people are beheaded for simply excercising freedom of speech. You can be beheaded for saying something against the religion or state. That is NOT a countryfor me. In the meantime sexual crimes against women and children go completely unpunished. You can keep it. I am staying well away form this nightmare country!

@Floofy shibe I honestly do not think that Saudi is ready for tourism in its normally accepted sense. I personally do not think that it ever will be. No offence if you are a Saudi! I also do think that taking somebody life is full of problems. firstly, in ordinary cultures it is immoral. secondly, If there is a mistake made and you behead somebody on wrongful evidence you cannot stick that head back on.

I am from Saudi, you don't know the situation of what you are talking about. No one is beheaded except if he killed someone, and the killed person's family didn't forgive the killer period. Freedom of speech exists, but if its found that you are speaking on behalf of another government to make the youth start a revolution you will go to jail. In fact the government only puts people in jail if they found connections with them and other countries embassy or something like that, which is what logain did. Saudi Arabia is more safe the us, uk, australia, and italy combined. Crimes are extremely low, people don't objectify women like they do in the west, this reporter says they don't have rights, will Islam gives them better rights than you do in the west, for example, every husband is obligated to pay for everything to his wife, even if she was rich. This rule in Islam took stress off of women so they can choose what is best for them. Unlike the west where they share spending 50% and women is always stressed and trying to find a job instead of caring for herself or her kids and husband.

When a minority does something unlawful in the west they consider it as a small issue as the majority don't do such unlawful things, just because a few people just like anywhere else in the world dont follow rules and regulations doesn't mean the rest of the nation also have the same feelings. This is hypocritical coming from the media of the west. Hundreds of thousands of people die from gun violence, substance abuse etcetera and yet they say "the majority of the nation don't do such things". We like the way the leadership is and has been, outsiders who pick and choose small instances and bring down such beloved nations have nothing else to say about such thriving people and their peaceful and happy lifestyles. So instead of picking and choosing sides with the minority why don't the international media applaud the way the system has been working for the rest of the nation. Strict rules and regulations mean you have less crime and disorder and more civilized, lawful and peaceful communities.

Why Westerners so obsessed with politicizing everything and turning it into a "better, smarter, higher, suprior, more ethical than you" competition? What will the Saudis, everyday average people benefit if you refrain from going to their countryand boycotting them? This stand in fact will help in contributing to the continuation of intellectual closure and moral delay in the world without knowing because you do not communicate with them, you refuse to know them, to get closer, it is similar to the idea of economic boycott that US is carrying out against countries that violate "international law" like Cuba, Iran and others. It harms innocent people more because it makes them isolated, easily brainwashed by their regime and probably face poverty and economic destitution. Please, stop turning everything into politics. This is about tourism. There are many countries that have human rights issues even so called "free world countries" like USA,, Britain and Australia, and yet no one suggests refraining visiting them. There are many countries in the world whose beauty deserves to be seen. Sauid Arabia is definitely one of them, rich history and heritage, very friendly hospital people in fact Saudi are the most generous people one will ever meet, it's in their culture to treat gusests as royality literally a proverb in Arabic, also it's extremely safe here.

@Skrooge Lantay Not correct. Women have more rights than men in Islam in some matters and vice versa The philosophy of Islam distributes rights and duties according to the gender of the person These are orders from God Almighty and the Prophet Muhammad and not from mankind God is our Creator .. He knows the right capabilities and conditions for life I advise you to search for books and videos about women's rights in Islam. It will help you to understand more. The woman is my mother, sister, wife, and daughter, and I do not accept that her right be harmed or digested But our concept of life is different from yours. And the correct judgment after reading and then criticism

Media is never where one can trust or base any judgement upon on something like this. Seeing for yourself is always the way to go. This country is far from perfect but things are not exactly the way they are portrayed here. This is not totally accurate and frankly outdated. Best way to know about a place is to go yourself or watch independent Youtupers who travelled alone with an open mind and see their thoughts before and after visiting.
