I'm a guy who's been riding Harleys for 15 years and I really like these. I like the shaft drive and liquid cooling. This engine does sound really good with aftermarket pipes too. Bike like this I'm not as concerned with horsepower as I am torque. I don't care if it's particularly fast but I do care if it's bogged down when I add the weight of a passenger or gear to it.

@@michigan_masks8969the reason that the Harley Sportster has been in continuous production since 1957 is that buyers like it. Some Harleys models may be an overpriced status symbol, but not the Sportster. While Harley is doubling their prices and claiming that they are going to be a high-end company the truth is they are now gouging their long established customers. if it had the aftermarket support that sportsters have then it would be a great alternative. as of now there are no big bore kits or anything to really up the power. you can get SOME accessories for it but nowhere near as many as with a HD. there are a lot things that make the honda better but it's only in that limited sense.

Looks good . They nailed the styling. Too bad Honda doesn't have a version with a larger displacement . I'd like to know what kind of valve adjustment is required. A big plus for me with Sportsters is they have maintenance free hydraulic self- adjusting valves. I also like Harley's belt drive much better. Anyway, there are still lots of used traditional Sportsters around at attractive prices . This bike is like an Elvis impersonator, good but I'll go with the genuine article.

I would assume it has to do with the engine tune and design. It is designed to be durable/reliable and have as much or more torque than HP. Your Virago has 42hp with 25 ft lb torque. The phantom has 44hp and 47 ft lb of torque. Torque is twice as much and it will feel noticeable.

I'm not saying several of the Japanese bikes didn't copy Harley. The cruisers often did, the sportbikes obviously didn't. I was just saying that even Harley has been known to copy other bikes from time to time themselves, like when Harley copied Indian's V-Twin. And having V-Twins are one of the main things Harley is known for. Also the V-Rod was brought out because the air-cooled push-rod Harleys were being outperformed by the water cooled Japanese bikes with overhead cams operated by timing chains. All of the motorcycle manufacturers copy each other from time to time. (My Honda VTX is highly influenced by Indian.... it's sort of an Indian wannabe.) It's still a great bike though!

I am speaking from experience, I have a sportsbike and bought a cruiser, that weighed 100 lbs more, within the first week a truck pulled into my path. Now my sportsbike (CBR600) would have had no problem, but the cruiser just slowed a bit. I sold it the next day. When safety is sacrificed for "the looks" , well count me out.
