I'm a guy who's been riding Harleys for 15 years and I really like these. I like the shaft drive and liquid cooling. This engine does sound really good with aftermarket pipes too. Bike like this I'm not as concerned with horsepower as I am torque. I don't care if it's particularly fast but I do care if it's bogged down when I add the weight of a passenger or gear to it.

I would assume it has to do with the engine tune and design. It is designed to be durable/reliable and have as much or more torque than HP. Your Virago has 42hp with 25 ft lb torque. The phantom has 44hp and 47 ft lb of torque. Torque is twice as much and it will feel noticeable.

I'm not saying several of the Japanese bikes didn't copy Harley. The cruisers often did, the sportbikes obviously didn't. I was just saying that even Harley has been known to copy other bikes from time to time themselves, like when Harley copied Indian's V-Twin. And having V-Twins are one of the main things Harley is known for. Also the V-Rod was brought out because the air-cooled push-rod Harleys were being outperformed by the water cooled Japanese bikes with overhead cams operated by timing chains. All of the motorcycle manufacturers copy each other from time to time. (My Honda VTX is highly influenced by Indian.... it's sort of an Indian wannabe.) It's still a great bike though!
