Hey Andrew, I bought a pair of these speakers based partly on your review, not because your review was without criticisms (it obviously wasn’t), but because you provided exactly the information I needed in order to make that decision. I was looking for speakers that could do double duty for stereo music and movies, that could play well at low volumes (the majority of my listening), that were not too finicky about placement, and that could be adequately driven (to moderate volumes in a small room) by a 55-60 watt amp. You gave all this info in your review. Even the primary negative - that their main weakness is filling a large room with bass at high volume - was helpful information, because that is not my use-case, so I was able to rule that out as a problem for me. (BTW I got them from your buddies at Just Audio for $1200 a pair including the stands, so that also helped make the decision for me!). So, I want to thank you for your high-quality, engaging, and usefully informative reviews.

I purchased the Model 5s and am very happy. The articulation of music they are capable of is exquisite. The 5s are unlikely to let you fall asleep in your Lazyboy stool, because they reveal the musicality of performances wonderfully. I have yet to put the speaker up to stadium level because of the sheer energy it can put out. Good power will also deliver good tone. Tone or timbres are absolutely spot on on the model 5s. Since the model 3 does the same in smaller spaces, and at lower listening levels, I am sure loads of people will be joyful to have the model 3. If you are a bass head buy a sub, if not, KLHs grow on you. My partner is a heavy metal lover, but she never asks me to play these speakers really loud. The sound is so vivid and the power needed to create a hard rock experience does not require blowing the walls down. The model 5s are fuller than the Linton Heritage, and far more joyous than the KEF LS50 metas because of this voicing. Check these speakers out. They are great

@clarice1001nights2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJohnnyNeat Not needed. I was an opera singer for 15 years and have sung with huge orchestras. I sang operas by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Live music sounds like a live volcano, a subterranean fire. The Model 5s capture music, they do not replay it in a melancholic darkened manner where detail is braided to being fuzzy instead of focused. The alive quality of music is the real deal. Many have picked up Lintons based on Andrew and Kristi's recommendation and couldn't be happier. I personally believe they recommended them over the KLH, to protect listeners who, own ear-splitting, and badly recorded rock'n roll. They also still recommend the KLHs and marvel at their lack of fussiness and performance. The KLH Model 5s have been sold out almost continually since their release. I am very pleased to own them.

It seems to me, after listening to this review, that the Model 3 might be the "missing link" in a KLH 5.0 setup. I think you had the right idea using the Model 3 as a center channel. Use the Model 5's for L & R mains, and get two more Model 3's for surrounds, and there you have it. No subwoofer needed, as you point out. You guys are doing a great job with these videos. Great review as always. I picked up Lintons based on your and Christy's agreement and couldn't be happier. You are my favorite reviewer because you focus on value and diminishing returns. No one else just comes out and says its not worth overpaying for certain brands of vintage type speakers when KLH, Wharedale, Magnate, etc. offer such great value. I'm running quite a variety of front end gear ( as2200 (per Christy), denon 4806, Pioneer reference blue ray, Sony ES SACD, denon tt with ortofon black ( per Andrew), Doge 7 dac with telefunken tubes rolled in) and while the lintons always retain their character, different dacs can make them sound more dynamic and detailed. Most of us don't have the opportunity to try a variety of speakers and the info you provided allowed me to save money on speakers AND not feel like I'm missing much by not dropping 2 or 3 times the money for JBL, Klipsch, McCintosh, etc. There are different classes of course, but within similar products among diff brands, more money doesn't automatically equate to better sound. My old speakers were more expensive (at the time) KEF R300's and I still like them but prefer the overall voicing and scale I get with the larger Lintons so I upgraded to less expensive mains

My Favorite 2 way (back in the day) was the AR-7. ... While I was in the Service (72-74) my room was filled with several Audio systems. My friend and roommate bought a HUGE Sansui speaker (it was like a 7-way configuration) and he would bother me about how good they were.... so, ONE DAY I disconnected his speakers and put my LITTLE AR-7s on TOP of his Speakers and TURNED THE VOLUME UP. .... When My buddy (Kenny) came to the room I said he was RIGHT as RAIN the Sansui Speakers were GREAT.... and he was GROVING the sound, when I pointed out his Sansui Speakers were disconnected, and he was listening to the 2 Way AR-7. .... I wish I had those speakers today, but HE BEGGED ME TO SELL THEM to him... ....... $71 (the Cost) - it was amazing ....... I REALLY DON'T think the Acoustic Technology are given enough credit for its sound in any of the reviews. I get the feeling that Giving the Technology Credit somehow is demeaning to the younger Generation..... I'm probably wrong, but it is a kind of Prejudice to say something is GREAT and leave the MYSTERY of WHY out of the equation.
@nc34192 жыл бұрын
It's my understanding, at least with the KLH Model 5 and perhaps the Model 3 that the tilt of the stand is absolutely necessary for the speakers to sound as good as they do and placement on a level stand actually degrades the SQ. So, no choice but to use the stands, which isn't bad, it's the design. Now, if you live in an apartment and limit sound pressure to more moderate levels, does the difference between the 5s and 3s diminish? Sure, the Model 5 should improve the mids and lows being a well designed 3 way. But for a two way, it seems at its' price point, it may be a good option particularly if compared to speakers in a range from Focal Chora, Dynaudio Emits and even Monitor Audio Silvers. Any comparisons to those? Given the price difference of about $1600, the SQ between the Model 3 to 5 should be commensurate between the two. Perhaps at lower volumes, the differences are less? Especially if the bass remains tight although less? There's alot of $$$ left over foe a sub, be it used or new, and whether necessary. As to looking odd...look at Klipsch Heresy. Seems about similar, squatty looking and tilted. At the now $2500 price, there alot of competition from Bucchardt among others. At $900, the competition seems pretty slim. Responds better to more powerful amps? What if you only need a few watts and enough headroom so a lower power amp that is well designed could be enough. It may be more a current thing than watts as the two don't always mesh. Hence why a 20 watt amp can outperform a 100 watt amp, more to it than that but essentially the case. Question is, in trying to decipher through all the poetically waxed review (which isn't bad per se), I am trying to denote exactly how these two models are similar, how they are different and where the 3s do not quite keep up with the 5s. It could be the other way around too. So...this review stills leaves me wondering a bit of how to describe or expect those differences/similarities to be and how the 3s could be a better solution given the step up to the 5s.

So what you are saying, but didn't initially say, is the 3's are for smaller rooms than yours. In a smaller room, their bass won't be trying so hard to fill the room and in a smaller room, the room would limit the bass extension of a model 5 to that of a model 3. Much better sound and incredible bass going from solid state and Class D amplification to Class A, a real game changer. It sounds better by the day...

Kristi doesn't like the Denton 85 because it's a laid back speaker? Strange, 'laid back' means that the treble and mid-range are reduced. However, the Denton 85 has elevated or raised treble and mid-range, so I'm confused. Some of the Denton owners, like me, are trying to tame the treble by using the resistor hi-fi tweak. Compared to the Denton 85, it's the Lintons that sound laid back.
@dredd5352 Жыл бұрын
I love my Denton 85ths, after 60 days they mellowed just enough. I tried the resistor with a very dark sound result. Using a PM 8006 and the denton 85ths are probably what rockers expected their music to sound like. Not some smooth perfection. I had the 3s and sent them back, I just reordered them because I did not take the time with them I should. They easily need at least 30 days of my time to get a real feel for their sound. What stood out was their silence between notes and voices. Like the blackest black on a tv. The silent of the silent. We shall see. The Lintons are tempting but the are all that heavy downer sound, like the Dentons with the resistor. Yes Kristi is off base with the Dentons, they may be cute but my PM 8006 will have you wiping the rock n roll grin off your face.

Hi Andrew and Kristi! Thanks for another always thorough and informative review. I’m wondering how adding a subwoofer to the KLH Model 3 would lighten the load on the power amp and the speakers. Referring to the excellent Marantz 40n, I researched and discovered the 40n only has a lowpass filter on the sub output, unlike a HT receiver which invariably have both high pass and low pass filters. Which means, when driving a pair of speakers and a subwoofer off the Marantz 40n, the main speakers driven by the 40n will receive a full range signal, heavy bass and all, regardless of whether a sub is used or not, meaning the main speakers and amp are pushed equally as hard in either scenario.

Personally I'd look to buy the original vintage model 5. Since I have no problem using equalization I feel that speaker is far more desirable than the new models. Its 12 inch acoustic suspension woofer is more than the equal of the new model 5, comparable to AR3, AR3a, and the original larger Advent. I wouldn't buy a ported speaker myself and acoustic suspension speakers are all I shop for. Lucky man that I am I've got a pair of Teledyne AR9s with tw 12 inch side firing woofers in a four way five driver tower. That was AR's best effort.

I have recently owned a vintage set of the KLH 5, its a very good speaker of the era where its better than a Large Advent but is slotted below an AR3. These new retro speakers like the new 5 and Linton are much more musical and dynamic than the vintage models above, they have more in common with modern speakers but are definitely an easy listen like the vintage models. There is something to be said about a traditional wide baffle speaker design that makes them very easy to place in a room.

Andrew, I am looking for some advice.... How integral to the sound are the stands? I was thinking of getting some model 5's but because of my room I would have to use them without the stands with the speakers directly on the floor. However, with these new model 3's, I could use them on their stands. Which do you think would perform better, 5's with no stands or 3's on stands? These would be music only speakers in a 12x18 room at reasonable volume....

I own the 5's, they need the stands. I personally love the stands, they make positioning the speakers very easy and look good. Everyone that has stopped by thinks they look really nice, and "cool". One comment on this review after reading some of the comments. Since this speaker isn't designed or marketed to compete with the Model 3, it seem like "Is the KLH Model 3 BETTER than the 5?" is the wrong question to ask? Especially if you are comparing them in the same 500sqft(!) room. It seems obvious that the speaker is designed to scale in sound and appearance to smaller spaces, why not review it that way and compare intended purpose vs intended purpose, if you must compare?
@andrewrobinsonreviews2 жыл бұрын
While the Model 3 may be intended for smaller spaces, the comparison is still valid even in our larger room and both speakers were treated exactly the same. The reality is people are going to shop the 3 and 5 against each other and so the question "is one better or as good as the other" is absolutely the question we felt viewers would be asking themselves and ultimately us. Many will likely side with the 3 based on price alone because price is a specification that weighs heavily on one's buying decisions. People may have felt they could spend less by getting the 3 while also putting them in a larger room. In my opinion, I would advise against this.
@greganderson96182 жыл бұрын
@@andrewrobinsonreviews Fair enough. Personally, because the 3 & 5 aren't THAT drastically different in price and footprint, the question I would been interested in is more: "...is there a room size/listening distance where the 3 starts to make more sense than the 5...?" Honestly, I prefer to use regular speakers as center speaker. They seem to blend better and have better off axis sound. It's just a matter of making them fit under your screen. As for the comparison between the 3 with a sub and the model 5 I would tend to disagree. Since the two are so similar I would say the 3's with sub would have the better overall sound, with deeper bass than the 5's, depending on the sub pairing but you can get pretty decent subs for 700 bucks or less. If you aren't deep bass crazy, then yes the Model 5 would make more sense.

Two SVS SB3000 subs in the mix too. You really do not need the subs with the 5's, but if you like bass, two subs can be very entertaining. The Model 5’s give me enough of that vintage acoustic suspension sound in the low end that I liked in the Advents, but with FAR more detail in the higher frequencies.
