I love my model 5’s! Have owned for a year now and the magic has not worn off. I’ll still be surprised by certain recordings and what these speakers can do with them. I have done in home demos with a Yamaha AS-1100, Marantz 40n, and Leak Stereo 130. VASTLY different sound with each of those amps, so i think you really nailed it on that point. Shockingly, what sounds best to my ear is my trusty (and budget friendly) Yamaha AS-501. Smooth & balanced without sacrificing too much on excitement when the music calls for it.

I think I'm a man of a certain age that remembers my parent's friends who could afford high end audio in the early 80s when speakers of this type were the norm. Those systems had a very clean sound that is hard to replicate. They just sounded 'smoother' than some of the modern gear.

Exactly. The modern Polk tower speakers are too bright sounding. IMO. That's why I'm leaning toward the KLH Model 5. I remember friends' HI-FI systems from the ’70s. They had a balanced sound.

I, too, remember this time! And I am looking for it again. Most of the modern gear that I have listened to has left me wanting.. I listen to it and think that sounds OK but not like the big full range speakers we listened to as kids.

As someone who owns a pair, I would say use that knob on the back and burn those suckers in. When I first hooked them up I was worried that the high end would not work for me.When you are ready for more, toe them in and / or use the treble knob. "Break-In Period: The KLH Model Five loudspeaker will sound great right out-of-the-box. But since a new speaker include many moving parts, these parts need time to adjust to one another and therefore some amount of "break-in" is required. In order for the loudspeaker to sound its best, KLH recommends the speaker to be played at a moderate volume for at least 8 hours prior to any critical listening. - KLH" As far as the low end "The KLH Model Five loudspeaker is tuned for 6" to 24" off the back wall and at least 24" from the corner of the listening room. For an otherwise neutral listening room, this should be considered the best starting position when first setting up the loudspeakers. - KLH" Hope this helps someone. Oh and I used the L.O.T.S. method from New Record day. Thats what really took it to the next level.

It's good to see the comeback of the bigger box 3-way speaker with several manufacturers returning them to their line-up. They were the 'normal speaker' around the '70s when I got into audio. I had a pair of Electro Research 310s that I later sold to a friend and he recently told me he still uses them and they still sound great.

Jeez I remember in the late 70's and 80's when you could buy a quality pair like these from any of the big names for around $155 to $300 each or thereabouts, hell I paid $385.00 on sale for a new pair of Pioneer HPM 100's on sale which I still have and sound good as day one, and those bastards are HEAVY and welll made-!! - I also have two pair of 300 watt Cerwin Vega LS-12, 12" three way speakers that are absolute BEASTS and need no subwoofer - however they do need a strong amp able to handle their 6 ohm woofers to get the most out of them but wow have they ever been great sounding and power handling speakers.

I think that Henry Kloss would like them. R.I.P., Henry - and thanks for everything! On the power thing, my old KLH Model 35 system came with the KLH 6s. It had 20w RMS. It was more than adequate. It was played LOUD when asked. While I’m sure that the new 5s are a bit less sensitive, I would bet that 20w would suffice.

Thanks Randy, good to see you review this speaker. This sounds like a speaker that could be a good endgame speaker for someone in the 2k-4k market. Since I am not in that market, I will appreciate them from afar and wish those that are good listening.
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 2 жыл бұрын
Sooner or later, they end up on the used market for a good price. Until then, speaker designing is an option with today's computer programs and even plans available online. You can get a lot of return on investment there, especially if you build the cabinets of large speakers and don't have to pay for shipping. Make them double wall and fill it with sand, or use constrained layer dampening from nuclear submarine technology. You can probably get pretty close for $500-$700, I'd imagine.

My Model 5's are keepers, they are not going anywhere. And Randy is spot on with his transparency remark and equipment choice. I played around with some different gear, and found they sounded different with each equipment change. I find Clas A/B preamp and amps play the best to my ear. I am using the Ares II, along with the Denafrips Hades and Thallo amps with the Node 2021. Not experiencing anything hot or spicy in regards to mids or highs. Randy was spot on with his review.
@keithwalker8090

I've always preferred sealed speakers. The bass always sounds right, and the setup is no fuss. A three-way done right (whatever that means) will usually sound better than a two-way. I haven't heard the KLH, paper mid, and woofer, check that. The Aluminum dome tweeter is a cringe moment for me. According to the reviews, KLH nailed it. When Cheapaudioman says a $2600.00 speaker sounds great, that puts the crown on it.
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475
@onebylandtwoifbysearunifby5475 2 жыл бұрын
Sealed are better. The question comes in at small driver size, where many people prefer a bass boost. But for large drivers, the coherent bass output of a speaker NOT changing over the frequency range (as ported do) sounds more like actual music every time. If you have room for an 8" woofer, sealed is a strong recommendation. 6" is more subjective, but 6" with passive radiator (a sealed variant) is finding its way into more and more high-end (like the $30,000 PSAudio F-30's). Sealed just sounds better, provided the bass frequencies are sufficiently represented.

Solid review Randy. You pulling your son in to listen brought warmth to my heart. Reminds me of my dad saying "come here and listen to this". It was always Genesis or Alan Parsons. Those moments are some of my most treasured memories, even if I couldn't stand listening to genesis back then! I wonder if the KLH model 3's (the little brother of these) fit the bill for a more affordable alternative. Side note, would you consider reviewing the SoundArtist SC8B's? Best, Kelly

I would think this would be considered an acoustic suspension design. The original KLH brand was acoustic suspension. The founder of KLH had been employed at Acoustic Research in Boston. The original speaker of this type was the AR-1W and the AR-3. This design was a break through allowing for bass down to 30 Hz in a very small (at the time) box. 1.7 cubic foot. The down side is they require more amplifier power, but with the power available now it is no issue.

These really are magic. Few other speakers can achieve the clarity and detail they do, while still having such a natural, musical, and dynamic presentation. You might try the Model 3 for a cheaper speaker that can come close what they can do. As for the Lintons, I don't think they can compare. They lack the clarity and dynamics that these have.

I bought a pair of the Model 5s a few months ago, and I could not agree more with everything in this review! I run the vintage looking speakers using some vintage gear, a Hafler DH-200 amp (I built from the kit back in the day...) and the Halfer DH-101 preamp. The Model 5s are just a joy to listen to, and I can listen to them for extended periods of time without any "listening fatigue." When I bought these, I went into the store to listen to some KEF LS50 metas, thinking that was what I was going to buy based on reviews. But when I heard the KLHs, for my preferences, there wasn't any contest. They aren't cheap, true. But I see these as a long-term investment that I hope to be enjoying for a decade or more.

Good review Randy. I still would choose the Wharfedale Lintons. I like the slightly bigger midrange and the lower price. The 8” bass driver is good enough for me as I run subs in my stereo rig. It’s so subjective. I simply love the sound of the Lintons. Love to hear your thoughts on the two compared directly. I feel others would too. I’ve seen some reviews comparing the KLH 5’s head to head w/the Lintons, and it seems people are split after hearing both. I’d be surprised if there was a clear winner. "Air Suspension" = sealed box. Bass Reflex is ported OR has a passive radiator. In either case there is a second vibrating member that is tuned to the free air resonance of the woofer.

I bought these about a year ago. I would say that these are pretty damned good, and much of what this guy says is pretty close. Especially with the amplifiers. I have a Sunfire limited edition cinema grand. It has 400 watts per channel so I had to be a little careful not to overdrive these. Also they just didn't sound great with this amp. Sometimes they sounded great, but I just didn't get a good soundstage with it. Plus the tweeters could sound really harsh with it. I traded out to a couple of Marantz MA-500 mono blocks. Made in the late 80's to early 90's. Much better!! They have 125 watts per channel, and 175 watts 4 ohm. In my opinion more than enough power. Honestly about the bass. I am a bit of a bass head so at least in my room it just wasn't enough. Mid bass is fairly good, and has become better over time. Plus with my set up I cannot move my speakers far enough back to take advantage of the wall reinforcement. I have mine 15" from the wall behind them. Here's my last observation, and I think it's a very important one. I never ever believed the hype about speaker break in, but in this case it's true. When I first bought these I ended up turning the level adjustment for the high end on the back of the speakers all the way to low. It's been a bit over a year and now they are on high, which is considered nominal by the manufacturer. I am not saying that on certain recordings the high end is always smooth, but it's way better than it was.

They look like my old AR-58's that have a 12" woofer rather than a 10". I have never felt the need to buy something else in the last 30+ years since I bought them new for $800 a pair. I always thought that wide speakers like that were supposed to degrade imaging due to diffraction and reflection on the front panel and edges. WIth old speakers like that I do not recall them competing with the small monitor sized for imaging at all. But I am willing to listen to these utterly conventional old school looking speakers. And I thought KLH glory days was 50 years ago. No idea about them in the interim. Yes I guess there is magic in speakers out there that can be found and surprise you. Ca. 1976 80% of the speakers in the big stereo stores resembled these. I guess that is why makers add exotic cosmetics to their modern offerings.

Acoustic suspension speakers drop off smoothly in the bass region where ported versions drop like a stone. Also, the lowest bass energy in bass reflex speakers is “one note” port boom. If not tuned perfectly, it stinks. There is a reason why Edgar Vilchur and Henry Kloss made scads of money with the first mass produced acoustic suspension loudspeakers - Acoustic Research (AR). They made less distortion and had more real bass than the prevalent open baffle stuff then.

Its about time we started seeing some with THREE WAY SPEAKERS. The price on these is insanely high, I have two well made Cerwin Vega 300 watt 12" three way LS-12's that will kick the crap out of these and they cost WAY less. I bought mine when speaker prices were still normal, I paid $179 each for my Cerwin Vegas years ago and they are still playing like brand new. I never have liked two way speakers, always a hole in the middle no matter what they claim to do to them and youre right this style in three way are WAY better than two ways which by the way also cost WAY too much for what they are. KLH used to be affordable now they have went way up in price, hopefully in quality as well.

Yeah bass seems to be more apparent in the new ones but I don’t listen to bass heavy music. I’ll find room for the the current ones when we move.
