Multiple drops and a bit of comedy!
Heads up for a spontaneous film after an epic day out on the green lanes of Devon. There is something really rewarding about getting into a situation and only having ourselves to get us out. This was unexpected but I learned a huge amount about real world solo motorcycle recovery.
Thanks for watching and subscribe if you like what you see. Thanks.

Deadlifts and squats are your friend. Also, lift the bike facing away from the bike. Much easier. You won’t risk injuring yourself that way and you can lift the bike many times before you are too tired.

After getting in situations like this with my Africa Twin, I sold it. It was almost 100lb heavier and didn't have the low fuel tank advantage. It was a real liability riding it to places like you went alone. Swapped it for a DR650 and couldn't be happier in the weight department.

Bottom line is this is a heavy bike, 100 lbs more than the XL/XR 600's I used to ride back in the day. But after owning a BMW 650 GS, and then an F800 GS, I find the 890 to be relatively easy to pick up. The low slung fuel tank helps a lot.

450+ lbs is only a problem if you drop it. My 1090R with all the protection is 500lbs. It's a back breaker. When it gets sketchy, you are better off sending it. going too slow usually ends in a drop.

Never ride offroad solo unless you know you can lift your bike 10 times over and over. Also, when it falls on the right side, set the kickstand out before you lift so you can just set it on the stand after the lift. Also, might be worth it to play with your slip control and maybe even air you tires way down just to get out of this mess your in. I applaud you for sticking with it and filming

I absolutely love this video. It looks just like me out riding my new 2023 KTM 890 Adventure R. I am healthy and in shape but I’m also 53 years old. So riding a 450+ pound bike is a new experience for me. I’m coming from a rather light Yamaha WR250R dual sport. Good vid and admirable determination lead to good outcome. As a trials rider I'd say the reccy idea is invaluable. Also when you approach a slippery surface like that you need to look carefully at your route - you can't ride across a camber as the back wheel (and front) will be trying to slide sideways from under you. You have to find the flattest/most level path to facilitate keeping the bike as upright as possible. That part of the trail did look particularly challenging though and the best plan may have been to take an alternative route ! 😃

Coming from single track trail riding on a 350, I try to start out in second gear, feather the clutch and attempt to get back on the footpegs as fast as I can to get traction to the rear wheel. That’s one of my worst fears if I were to get one of these big adventure bikes. I don’t know if I would be able to lift it up four times on one ride. I ride alone 99% of the time. It pays to watch other riders experiences. A few years ago I stopped at the top of what looked like a challenging downhill section. I was out in the middle of nowhere. No cellular service and back then I did not have a GPS. I had second thoughts about this downhill but proceeded anyway. Halfway down it got worse than I could see from the top. I lost control of the bike and almost saved it three or four times before I went down in a less than graceful manner. Had the wind knocked out of me. It took a few minutes to feel up to getting my bike upright and running. Aside for being scuffed up I wasn't hurt. Same for the bike. This could have been so much worse. I realized that nobody knew I was out for a ride much less my route or where I might be. Took out my thermos and had a cup of coffee while I pondered my situation and worse outcomes, my gear and any changes I might make. I finished that section of trail with no issues and the remainder of my ride went well. I was lucky. I still ride solo most of the time. The experience caused me to be diligent about where I am going and making sure someone who gives a shit knows what I am up to and when I should check in. If I change my route I reach out and let my point of contact know. It is not a perfect system but it's better than nobody knowing I went for a ride or where I might be.

Pushing the bike from behind you only use leg strength. You need to stand next to the steering, put your torso against it and push, this way you use leg, core and arm strength and you are in a more stable nearly vertical position. Push a bit at a time, then stop and reposition yourself. Repeat. Try traction control on various settings and off, see what works.

I use to own a 350 scooter, road tyres, 10kg lighter than the 890. One day I decided to take an off road path I've never taken before, had rained a few hours ago, last 40ft were 30° uphill of slippery mud and wet leaves with some slippery rock and roots here and there. Couldn't possibly turn around, bike too (top) heavy and bulky, path too steep, slippery and narrow and dropping the bike would cost me an arm and a leg (very expensive plastics) so a very similar situation to the one on this video, just a bit more hairy. Took me about 40 minutes of trial and error, sliding up and down the hill until I discovered the method mentioned above. Once I realised what I had to do I got out quickly, it was an amazing workout and quite a relief to get out of.

when you drop the bike the handlebar guard could turn at mounting position and result clutch position change. Starting from stand still on slippery rock you can try to air down the tyre pressure (a lot) and use slip 9 & off road throttle to help you get the drive. You also reduce the chance rear wheel spinning freely and moving sideways. When a bike lay down for long I wouldn't start the bike straight away, I'd let it stay upright for a few minutes(and I rest a bit) before start again. I like your calm attitude.

As someone who has always been a street rider, I am amazed at how willing adventure riders are to just drag their bike across rock. Its a totally different mindset and as I am looking to buy my first adventure bike, I am having a bit of a hard time grasping the idea of spending 16,000$ CAD on a bike that is guaranteed to be dropped and scratched/cracked. How do y'all get past this in your heads? Really a struggle for me. Used to buying supersports and Dukes and polishing them all day instead of letting them get dirty and scraped up.

Hi Peter and thanks for watching. Completely get that as I was completely the same before October last year. The mindset shift is liberating and it feels great having a bike that is dirty more often than clean. I accepted that I was going to use the 890 for what it is intended and I rather like the battle scars. The best news is that it’s stood up to it fine and only has a few scratches. I suppose I could have been less “progressive” in my learning but I’m at the point now of not dropping it very often. Have fun and embrace the new mindset and the dark side 👍😎

Think of leverage as torque. Lifting the bike by the seat and tank is not a good way to do it. The widest part of your bike is the bars. So using the bars will give you the most amount of leverage, making it easier. You can also grab a log for extra leverage, or a rock to kick under it whilst you do a two stage lift... great if you have a bad back.

Fit enduro tyres, the big bike eats them but it's worth more to me to have the best grip off-road as I can live with compromised road manners for the run home and fit the roadies when I feel. The 890 even with luggage on hides its weight well until sh1t gets ugly then you suddenly realise it's no 300exc and the weight is realised very quickly, especially when you're pinned under it 🤗 I use Excel rims, 1.85" and 2.5", med duty Michelin tubes with mitas E12/E13 low 20's psi and lower further on the rear when needed. In winter I'll use the terraforce ef yellow and a mousse in the front. Airing down a tubeless tyre is ok to a point, but they have very stiff sidewalls compared to a tubeless enduro tyre that's designed to flex and find grip.

Candidly, I would suggest the pilot to enroll in an off-road course. So sorry, but the 890 seemed like a lantern guiding a blind man. Sorry, but 890 doesn't too heavy, it's your skills too low for such off-road.

Hello nobbi, in these very difficult technical situations (at least for me) i use rally mode with abs and throttle set for offroad; the slip i modulate on the run according to "road condition". Maybe in this case something between 8 and 5 perhaps, for slippery hard surface. Good luck and try again . Very good and onest video- congratulations from tuscany, italy
