I honestly respect RDR2 a lot more then all the other games you mentioned besides maybe Spider-Man simply because the main character father stereotype is getting old. I agree with you the tv show doesnt have to be an exact retelling of the video game story to be great. However if you’re going to make unnecessary changes to an adaptation you have to justify why this makes the writing better. In that sense all the points that Synthetic Man made in the show were spot on. The video game did the story better than the show yet he still gave the tv show a 7/10 thats a good score. I dont see how pointing out the differences and saying they dont improve the original’s story so whats the point of this show existing is a wrong question to ask. So when people say the tv show is overrated i tend to agree because even tho a few episodes felt like 9/10 most of the episodes hovered around anywere from a 4-6 out of 10 so if i was giving a score i’d say a 6.4/10 would be what i’d give the show personally episode 1 and 8 being my favorites

Yeah a lot of unnecessary changes, like two filler love story episodes, almost an episode and a half of building up the raider leader hypocrite lady who I guess was supposed to be “intimidating” when her and her people got wiped instantly due to her incompetence, Ellie trying to cure Sam and not telling anyone almost leading to her death and possibly the death of Henry and Joel, for some reason they made Tommy and Joel have a closer relationship when Tommy still holds the same resentment he has in the game which makes less sense since he’s still buddy buddy with Joel in the show, and swapping spores out of the fungus plague with tendrils because they’re “more realistic” 😂 also Neil ruining the analogy of Bills story in the game just so that the gay people don’t look bad is hilarious, less hilarious is how he left Bruce’s name off the credit of the HBO show trying to make it look like the story was completely Neil’s. Even if he was the one who wrote the HBO show, Bruce helped him make the original story and they wouldn’t have the show without the game.

The Last of Us-ification of games for me is a valid criticism (at least for Sony games). Whenever a video game makes waves it immediately gets cloned to death to the point that it gets ruined for everyone. e.g. Doom Clones, the brown action military FPS era, the indie walking sim era, and now every Sony game needing to be a reskin of The Last of Us (like the new God of War had the Last of Us camera which I'm still not over) A huge version of this for TV and movies is Guardians of the Galaxy. After that first movie dropped suddenly EVERY single piece of Disney slop needs to have quirky characters dropping jokes and one liners and scenes can never be anything but funny anymore.

*TL;DR:* The bedroom confrontation scene in the game seems more impactful bc it's the emotional peak of game Joel's more angry personality. But HBO Joel is more naturally paternal, so his emotional peak is his conversation with Tommy where he breaks down bc he's scared he'll fail Ellie- so the bedroom confrontation may not seem as emotional bc Joel is instead bringing up his walls again after just being vulnerable. The iconic bedroom confrontation seems to be difficult for gamers to follow emotionally if they're too used to the characterization of Joel in the game, but it works perfectly fine for non-gamers who are used to HBO Joel's PTSD and Ellie's feelings of isolation. Joel here enters the scene after just having an emotional breakdown in front of Tommy, so he enters the bedroom with his walls down and ready to be honest to Ellie that he's leaving. He's also not angry at Ellie here, unlike the game, bc she didn't run away on horseback to make him chase her for gameplay's sake. Lastly, he doesn't have his walls up still like game Joel does and already told Ellie earlier in that episode that he feels responsible for her. They actually added and changed some of the dialogue to fit the different tone of the situation here, like Ellie saying "I stood up for you today bc I thought..." and Joel full-on saying "Of course I do" when Ellie asks if he gives a shit about her, which is not at all something game Joel would be characterized to say at that moment. Over the course of the show, Joel hasn't been pushing away Ellie as game Joel has bc HBO Joel is more naturally paternal and opened up to Ellie much faster. So the reason Joel is less emotional than in the game is bc, rather than getting angry, he's just icing her out by acting colder. Ellie mentioning Sarah makes him build up his walls again bc it's making him feel guilty abt how he failed Sarah, which is exactly the emotional conversation he had with Tommy. So this is the first time in the show that Joel is purposely trying to push her away, the exact opposite of game Joel.

The Last Of Us TV show is a good adaptation. However it's not perfect like the game. I remember the first time I played The Last Of Us and it impacted me to such an extent that I regard it as one of the greatest not only games but pieces of media every created. However with the TV show which I watched with my parents and my brother (who's around the same age as me but never played the game) watched the show and the reaction was, "Yeah it was good." They didn't have the same reaction that I had with the game instead of being awed and inspired by absolute perfection the reaction was, yeah it was alright. The Last of Us is a good adaptation but it struggles to be either a perfect adaptation or a perfect show.
@beccazach Жыл бұрын
@@pintolerance785 The game comes off as 'perfect' bc of the medium that it's in, bc it's unique in balancing a good story with good gameplay. It places you into the shoes of the character which makes you experience the story more intimately than you normally would thru a passive experience w/ a movie or show. But it isn't a unique story in any way, or something that hasn't been done better in any other form- as a book, movie, or even a tv show, it's pretty standard and not groundbreaking in the slightest, thus ppl who have only seen the tv show won't see it as some sort of masterpiece unless they really love Bella and Pedro's chemistry or the show's worldbuilding/side characters (which seems to be a lot of ppl based on how successful this show is with the general population + critics, esp with how viral Ep3 became due to being so unique). There is also plenty of ppl who've played the game and don't think TLOU1 is perfect, bc it's subjective, but can connect to the live-action more bc of the storytelling strengths that tv shows have to offer over a videogame that focuses more on gameplay. You're doing the TV show a disservice if you think it's trying to break new ground or that it'll be the same experience as playing a video game. It's just meant to adapt the game's story into a new medium to reach a bigger audience that will never pick up a controller or ppl who don't know that video games can tell complex stories. The upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn and GoW adaptions will also not be the same 'masterpieces' or as immersive as the games bc they quite literally can't be, due to the change in format- but they can still excel in their storytelling and characters, which is all that's needed for a good show. You have hindsight and the ability to compare your experience between TLOU1 and the show, which won't be the same as ppl who are experiencing the story for the first time thru the show alone. The fact that it's improving some areas of the plot, worldbuilding, and the characters, as well as providing an immersive story, is the most it can do. But it's undoubtedly the best live-action game-adaption to date.
@pintolerance785 Жыл бұрын
@@beccazach So in simpler terms you're saying that it can't be a perfect television show because the story its adapting isn't amazing/unique and the only thing that made the original last of us a masterpiece was just the blend between gameplay and story. Also just for the sake of elaboration can you give me some examples of stories that have been done that are the same as the last of us but done better? The Road comes to mind a story about a father and son traveling across an apocalyptic world in search of shelter but never find it, but that's not a good example because the question of sacrificing the one you love most for the many i.e the trolley problem doesn't ever come up in the road. So tell me what stories have done the un-unique story of The Last Of Us better then the last of us. Yes I agree that it is a great live action adaptation of a game however it still could have done some things better, it's not perfect. If I had the choice of say watching the last of us season 1 vs watching the walking dead season 1 I'd pick the walking dead every time. And both of those are adaptations.
@beccazach Жыл бұрын
@@pintolerance785 [longgg comment] Never said the original game isn't amazing as a story- it's just the relationship between a man that lost his kid and a lonely child that's not unique, but it's elevated by the storytelling medium and apocalypse situation it's in. The relationship that unfolds between Joel and Ellie in the game is a specific journey but can still be told in a different way than how the game showed it, because many of the story beats and relationship milestones they experience can be displayed in the show through smaller actions and not just fighting infected all the time (it works with the fact that there are fewer infected seen in the show, as HBO Joel doesn't need to be just saving her from hordes of infected to show his protectiveness, but from him not wanting her to use a gun to protect her innocence or him staying awake to keep watch while Ellie's sleeping, which isn't seen at all in the game). And the trolly problem never comes up until the very end of the game, where many people have said they don't find it to be a conflict in the first place bc no one would ever sacrifice someone they love for a slim chance of making a cure. I'm not sure what aspect of the show you're saying you have a problem with, just not being able to invest in the story or characters?? Bc that's not a fault of the show if a majority of new viewers are easily able to do that bc they can see the relationship coming from a mile away- it's like I said, you have a bias bc you're remembering how it played out in the game, and so any deviation in the show might throw you off and make you think it's not effective storytelling. Your family not thinking the story is unique can also happen if they had certain expectations if you told them abt it, but as a show, it doesn't come off as a relationship that they haven't seen before in other passive media. But there are plenty of other families who love this show and its characters. Obviously TLOU1 isn't completely the same as one specific story, but it's similar to many other ones that develop a relationship that is easy to root for and not very complex. The Last of Us, The Mandalorian, Logan, Stranger Things (Eleven and Hopper), and probably a lot more than I can't remember all follow that similar surrogate father-child relationship, but what makes them great is that they have the ability to do it well under different circumstances bc of the chemistry between the actors and the dialogue between them. You're saying you'd rather watch TWD s1 and that's your choice bc there might be aspects that you prefer in that over how TLOU HBO did its storytelling, but there are ppl who prefer the storytelling of TLOU. This show is purposely not trying to be an action movie, but a character drama, which has always been the emotional core of the series (apart from fighting the infected, which was just gameplay required for the medium). Unlike how the drama in TWD is abt humans dealing with the new threat of walkers and humanity falling apart because the apocalypse just started, TLOU is already 20 years into the outbreak + has a more positive message of focusing on what motivates humans to keep surviving in such a broken world, meanwhile the infected are just a looming threat in the background to explain why humanity has never fully recovered. If you're disappointed in the lack of action: as a show filled with fungus monsters, things could've gotten very over the top and unrealistic to new viewers if not handled correctly, which would undermine the whole emotional tone of the story. By making the humans in the show not have superhuman strength/abilities like the characters in the games, it makes the threat of the infected, and basic survival in general, more immersive. The creators also wanted the show to be different from the game by only highlighting the emotions behind violence + its repercussions and not the violence itself, such as always cutting away from a scene before a human gets killed. Walkers aren't as scary or dangerous as the infected, as TWD made walkers pop up in the middle of nowhere for random action scenes that quickly got stale and repetitive. The infected in the show are way too fast and strong to fight (as shown by how every encounter with them ends with someone dying) and having random infected isn't how TLOU HBO set up the rules for them in this series- they're only in the city, right outside the QZs, not in evacuated towns or isolated forests with no people, where Joel and Ellie purposely travel to avoid running into the infected. Desensitization to violence in a show or movie is important to avoid or else it loses its impact in the story; in a game that's not much of an issue since you're supposed to be fighting waves of infected/human enemies.

@@beccazach I'll tell you what not many people can come along and make me ponder something but you did so good job. What I'm stuck on is we can't find something to disagree on, both of us are stuck in this duality where we both hold normal rational opinions on something but where as one of us is good with the last of us the other is not. I don't knew perhaps me being a fan of the last of us for so long has made me jaded maybe when the last of us 2 released and I got caught up in the discourse surrounding the game something inside of me broke a little when it came to The Last Of Us, where as before part 2 came out I was an avid fan who saw the game as a masterpiece and had 0 qualms but then 2 came out and destroyed the fan base, fracturing it beyond repair because there is just a either you don't like the game and hate everyone who likes it or you do like the game and hate everyone who doesn't like it. It got to the point where I genuinely hated being a Last Of Us fan like actually but I can't stop caring about the franchise, and discussing the franchise, and pondering over the franchise because like what else am I gonna do I've dedicated too much already to the last of us. What're we even arguing about I don't know anymore, I forgor. All those examples you gave about story's similar to the last of us came out after the last of us by the way. Also I didn't tell my family to expect anything from the show it was kinda like an experiment more then anything like I just wanted to see what their reaction would be and the reaction was that it was good, and I look online and the most sizable contingent opinion from people is that the last of us show is good. And I'm saying the last of us show is good and it's the best live action remake that exists but it's not perfect and there are things it does do wrong and that's my whole opinion. Good show. And no matter how much money, talent and resources they try to pump into making an adaptation, is never going to beat something the set the bar so high before. The exact reason you claimed you liked all the expanded character and world development are the problem I have with it. You claimed it expands on the world and shows other points of view because you can do this in tv but imo it is one of the main problems with the show because the relationship between Ellie and Joel isn’t there. It’s not as developed or earned because we don’t get enough time with them. Instead we spend an entire episode without them. Idc how good you think the episode is, it takes away from the main relationship that is very needed to make the ending feel earned and make sense. If they wanted to do all this extra stuff that doesn’t involve or have anything to do with Joel and Ellie then they should have had more episodes And I also don’t like the changes in characterization with Joel and Ellie. It does a disservice to them but that’s not to say both actors don’t portray what there are told to really well, it just doesn’t do the story any favors. I really don’t like the Joel beat dude to death in ptsd flashback, prefer the game version but they do this because of the change in Joel’s characterization

Episode 3, as much as I loved it, should've keep the train going on building up Joel and Ellie as partners. But instead, we spent an hour with characters who will have no further impact on the series. A great episode but in the end, it was just good Emmy bait and a theme that I don't think was worth the time we lost with our main characters. Sam and Henry were great characters to expand on, but Kathleen turns into such a cartoonishly evil character, like someone out of Uncharted, not Last Of Us, that it makes me angry that they even wasted time on her. And don't even get me started on how much they de-clawed Tess and the show's chronic habit of Telling Not Showing. I also think Bella did a good job. Their Ellie is just a slightly more aggressive version, but nothing out of the realm of possibility of how Ellie acted in the game. Pedro as Joel on the other hand.... It didn't even feel like the same character. He was Joel 'In Name Only.' Instead of adapting game Joel to the screen he just played another Pedro Pascal Sad Dad™. The writing was servicing Pedro as an actor and not Joel as a character. I think Pedro was horribly miscasted for Joel. He doesn't have the tone to play Joel, he's soft hearted and you can see it in his face, the way he speaks, and the way he acts. The same way Game Bill and Show Bill are basically two different characters, I see Pedro Joel and Game Joel the same way.

Hot Take. I dont like race swapping and bad casting for characters that don't need to be put through either. The only people with good acting chops unironically were (in character) the Cannibal Priest, Joel, Tommy, and the gay lovers (Hank and Bill or whatever their names were). No other character left a genuine lasting impression on me and it's not because I hate them which I so obviously do. Im not a fan of people casting others that dont look or act remotely like their characters, nor do they act like their characters counterparts or fit it into the story well with cohesive storytelling or drama, it's just because they literally knew people or had connections and wanted to present the story in such a fashion for their own narrative. Bella Ramsey as an actress did not have what it takes to portray Ellie properly and you all can fight me over that. She was obnoxious, rebellious, a nuisance, and an unmitigated risk the entire season and at no point was there any real reason for Joel to genuinely give a rat fuck about her and the scenes where he just magically cares more for some reason beyond "muh reward", it becomes glaringly obvious that it was forced cohesion. I cant even testify that it was bad blood between the actors because they loved having each other around on set (Bella & Pedro) but the story/script and Bella's portrayal killed off any realistic or wholesome relationship dynamic between Ellie and Joel's characters because of how bad both the scrip and her acting was. What do I know though, I just sit in my basement's basement and eat molepeople all day.

I don't care about race swapping in media as long as it serves a purpose and isn't just some company checking off diversity boxes, I think that the race swapping in the last of us is fine. In a show like house of the dragon I think the race swapping is actually perfect and actually benefits the story because we can easily tell apart the targaryens from the valerians when it would be confusing just having 2 different major houses with their soul characteristic being white hair. On the opposite end of the spectrum there's Velma, which is just everything wrong with everything that's ever existed in the history of forever.

You want to see how the handle part 2 because the first game never had a sequel in mind which is why so many spacers of it felt forced and rushed where here with crag mazin they can expand on what that game tried to do by having the adaptation of part 1 feel more as if it’s building to something which in some areas I do feel that way but we’ll have to wait a few years to see if this is payed off
@Nitsua1201 Жыл бұрын
The show and the game are almost entirely different stories. The one for one reshoots into live action were a bad decision. Should've fully committed to being entirely its own thing. At least then I could've tried to enjoy it without comparing constantly between the two. Its not a bad show and it wasn't a perfect game but if I had to pick one over the other I'd go with the game's story 10/10 times. Acting, world building, set design, character development, etc. Nothing the show does surpasses the story told in the game for me. Everything you had to say about episode 3 is perfect. Venom mode. Anyone thinking of Sarah's actor as a 'kid' is retarded. The zombies moving like this is World War Z and the absence of spores detracts massively from what made this setting special. The tendrils don't make up for it. The hive mind only makes it worse. Joel trading drugs and making conversation with the physical embodiment of his daughter's death is retarded. Especially five to ten minutes after the very scene. Tess being captured by Robert and his goons and escaping thanks to sheer dumb luck is retarded. The fireflies being a democratic terrorist organization is retarded. The 'Tess make-out' scene is retarded and I don't care what anyone has to say about it. I'm very sad that Annie Wersching passed away and couldn't portray her in the show but am glad she missed that scene specifically. Ellie being cold and callous(horse pun) about the part she played in Tess' death with the literal only person who can keep her alive is retarded. Stealing the gun is the perfect example of the entire show. Sensible changes made which detract from the overall message, main character development, and bonds formed along the way. They've added their own changes and stories to make up for those losses but to tell enough of a different tale that I've lost all interest. Cool, Sam and Henry are more complex but they aren't better. Same for Bill and Frank, Tommy and Maria, even Ana and Marlene. There is more to every facet but each new detail draws away from the real story. Joel and Ellie. Their bonding and becoming partners who can rely on one another, friendly enough to laugh around a fire, put each other back together, and save one another from the worst that the world has to offer has been watered down to a point where you are left questioning the validity of the one for one reshoots. Especially the confrontation in Jackson and then the final episode. I hope for a very good continuation for fans of the show. Hopefully being forced to work with others will make Niel's sequel into something great, as it should have been. All of the pieces are there for it. He just needed a little help. Alright, a lot of help. But I hope it works.

So you use one of Synthetic Man's arguably weaker points in his videos about the adaptation, but you don't talk about his more substantial concerns and criticisms like the side by side of the bedroom scene with Joel and Ellie near the end of the season, the implications of how the Fire Flies are treated and perceived as compared to the game, the narrative issues of how they'd extract the cure, and the changes that really didn't need to be changed like giving characterization to factions that have so little screentime in the game and are meant to be an obstacle to fight through in a hostile environment. Cheap shots at their finest. While I agree that the race-swapping isn't nearly as bad as the Netflix adaptation of Resident Evil, i.e. Whesker (that Synth explains believes in a superior race, btw), can you really blame him for noticing in media that there have been unrealistic or jarring examples of established characters in fiction that are either totally different, miscasts in certain areas, and just changed for really no reason? Alongside the fact that there's an alarming amount of women in power in settings in different media that don't make sense like here where the leader isn't threatening in the slightest and just does a bunch of dumb shit like getting herself killed in a monologue for no reason. Also, what the fuck is wrong with you? We don't like Ellie in the game for being a (loli)pop or some shit. We liked her because of her writing and charm. This version of Ellie has a lot more concerns when it comes to the material Bella was working with alongside scenes that people have argued are inferior to the game like the bedroom scene near the end of the game.

I’m a huge fan of The Last of Us. I love all the game (even part 2) and I’m glad to be a part in the community of one of the best zombie stories ever told, so it surprised when I watch the show was disappointed. A common criticism with adaptations is that they go to far from the source material; It seems Naughty Dog took that advice and literally made the same story. I could understand if this was for a game that didn’t really had a story and just lore that could be turned into a story, however this was made from an already cinematic game. For those who have played the game, all you get from this show is a watered down version of the game story. I wasn’t aspecting them to tell a new story but they missed the opportunity to expand on the world and lore, which was shocking because the first few episodes were doing that. The first episode we’re about the start of the infection and the impact it had, but then the writers just gave up. This was just pointless from anyone who actually played the game, but for newcomers who don’t play games I would recommend it; if you do play games and haven’t played TLOU I wouldn’t recommend watching the show because the game just gives the ultimate package especially with the remake out.

@@pintolerance785 i would say it is one of the worst i think alot of people dont recognise animation as a actual form of cinema so downplay it to being films made for kids so there for they're bad and aren't on the same level as live action productions even though all the Pokémon films before the most recent one with R.R where all animated and very good and many other franchises got thier own feature length films but because they weren't live action and as aren't considered real films by the main stream media last of us the only reason it's getting praise in my opinion is because it's a live action production and wasn't complete and other shit, shit but not completely.

best play classic or remastered for the TLOU, remake isn't needed and does change things for the worse especially that broken pc port that will never be fixed, don't buy over priced games just cause branding people Show suffers as said by dragging out the wrong things, every episode should of been 30 min, shouldn't of over blown its budget of development, actually made characters likeable than a bi- (ellie), and not be filled with agenda pushing (episodes wasted for social credit) higher ups do things for analytics than its actual audience, and audience gaslights themselves into accepting cause 'its not the worse thing ever/change can be good" rather than a hard standard of quality the show isn't good, just high budget and s2 will ruin it as it ruins every character with nowhere to go after
