Is The Laveo Dry Flush Toilet Worth It?

We live in our van full time and decided to try the Laveo Dry Flush Toilet.
We realize that...
1) This is the most expensive vanlife toilet. It is our emergency toilet for the kiddos and has saved us in some situations.
2) The flushes do not always work, but no system is perfect. For us it was a better option than black water, a cassette or composting.
3) When we bought this dry flush toilet we were told that they were coming out with biodegradable bags. I’m still waiting for that to happen and have emailed them many times about this with no response. We are not proud of the waste it produces, but we are happy to save some water!?
4) Getting/finding/ buying the flushes on the road is impossible. The company has ZERO distribution. The customer service for this company is horrible. Those are the two biggest reasons we do not recommend this product. If that does not bother you then go for it! The actual concept and product work very well.
Hey! We are Geo and Allie. We sold our house, bought a Sprinter Van and hit the Road. Geo runs a business from the road and Allie focuses on putting her energy into the kids education and our next destination. We are originally from Baltimore MD, but our travels will take us all around the country.

Seriously the waterless (and water using) toilet industry is a damn mess! Every design I have seen fails at some critical aspects of usage and is grossly overpriced. I know we can solve this issue, but I suppose we don't have enough minds on it and/or the right ones. That plus a general lack of motivation from the population to invest in the proper R&D. Makes me quite ill seeing how much waste is created from these sub-par systems that are literally supposed to be helping us manage our organic waste.

Thanks for the intel. At $1+ per flush it's incentive to eat a proper diet. Agree with the increased waste but if used sparingly arguably acceptable. Any smell? That looks like ocean beach :] Thanks again, take it easy. If you run into a large white T1N 158"wb with tinted windows, knock and say hello. I'll trade in-n-out and a beer for a flush :p

Almost $1,000 for this toilet & almost $2 a flush! It's very clever that it twists a continuous bag to seal each flush. I'm SURE there is a way to make a DIY inner outer bucket that you manually twist the inner simple trash bag to do the same thing. Take care

I am actually going to purchase this toilet. Yes, I agree, that the waste makes me very sad. But as a senior, I need something to use at night and in emergencies. I will be camping mostly remotely, so I will use other options. However, I don't want to be venturing out in the middle of the night, either. Maybe, hopefully, they will make those inserts out of something more environmentally friendly in the future. I'm already going to be driving a diesel vehicle, as opposed to my daily electric car, so I have to live with that guilt as well. We all do what we can.

I've had mine in my RV for almost 2 years, spend over 200 nites a year so likely 400 to 500 uses so far. Big fan. Recently had an issue, too lazy to look up a solution, went ahead and called directly, 6:30 at night, the voice-mail said leave a message, I got a call back within 10 minutes but missed it, got another call less than 10 minutes later, gentleman walked me through a couple solutions I should try before ordering say parts and if first suggestion didn't work, suggested cheaper alternatives than ordering from them directly!!! With some skill and coordination and I could use one of those diaper disposal thingies a lot cheaper, lol. But this could be great for boondocking because it uses no precious water to flush. It did not flush properly. I've seen others do a perfect twist vertically, get pulled down, and the next user does not see the twisted up bag from the previous user. Yours started the vertical twist, then twisted it horizontally and left it for the next user to see... It should, for the most part, be virtually invisible...

I'm not understanding this, so its a foil type large bag (probably extremely hard to rip or tear) attached to a cardboard cutout octagon type shape. OK so far nothing we cant do fairly easily. Its attached to the top plastic part (which is always thrown away) probably by an adhesive. Ok a little tougher here. Plastic top part we can get 3d printed with minor modifications to allow for small latch clamps maybe 5 of them around the outside which latch on and hold the top of the large foil type bag to it. And then you just unlatch it and reuse the plastic top part with your foil type bags which are made of extremely hard to rip or tear material. I will get on this, hardest part is the latches and making sure they hold tight. Or maybe even plastic inserts that go through the plastic part and through the top of the bag so that will def hold it. It's not even about the saving of $$$ but more about the convenience, less space wasted because you are reusing the bulkiest part of it, and most of all not having to worry about running out.

So not only do I need to spend money on the refills (it’s not cheap) but now I have a shipping cost and just hope the package makes. There are lots of pros and cons, just like all the other types.

I use a Luggable Loo in. my tiny house. Plastic bucket with toilet seat. I line it with heavy kitchen can bags, changed twice weekly. Put them in a big black bag with the rest of my trash and in the bin for pick up. Anyone who has raised kids or cats should have no problem with the changing process. The die hard greens can skip the bags and compost the waste. In a moving house bungee it to the wall and keep the lid down. They are cheap and simple. Drop in some cedar shavings or oil if you like. Don't use cedar or most oils around cats. Many things are toxic to them. Peeing outdoors or in a separate container reduces weight and smell. It's really not bad. I don't see the DryFlush as worth the advantage of never seeing or smelling waste while servicing. I'm not a princess. Six and a half years with this system so far.

I use a Walmart fold up bag toilet. I buy Big Lots 4 gal bags that I line one of the expensive bags that come with the toilet The whole secret is to separated out number one into a easy to use sealable container. I use a large big gulp cup because I have a nice no spill place to put the thing in my van and it's easy to replace. Also, nobody seems to object to emptying out a big gulp cup on to grass or in a planter (to much to finish anyway especially the lemon lime stuff). The other stuff is simply sealed up in the bag. For me this goes right away into a dumpster but there are other ways. You could put in some drying powder or peat moss and place in a couple of 2.5 gallon slide seal bags or sealable bucked if you want to go the batch route. You can also go the compost route by getting composting bags and bury the material where it will not get disturbed for a year or so. For me it's 60 bags for $2.50 pluss TP, paper towels and hand sanitizer is enough for everyday. Yeah, toilet is $35 at Walmart which you need to replace now and then because the plastic clips on the legs and lid like to brake.

Line your black lining with another, smaller, bag. Leave out the cassette and add cedar shavings. Simply add cedar shavings (to cover) each time you use it. When the toilet is full, tie a knot in the top of the inner bag and toss in the trash. Line again with another small bag and repeat. The toilet is great, using it as intended... not so much. Too pricey and the cassettes take up far too much real estate in one's vehicle.

It might be possible to do an end run around the cartridges by using kitty litter or camping toilet supplies (I don't know what they're called - they are used in very primitive bucket style 'toilets' to absorb waste) deposited directly into plastic trash bags. Hand twisting would be an option for the un-squeamish. That also means no battery power would be needed. Granted, it's an expensive option as opposed to that bucket...

Good thought Zeba, but why buy the toilet if you are not going to use the cartridges? That is a super expensive bucket. In bind you could throw a bag in there for sure, but then you do not get all the benefits of the dry flush. Appreciate the thoughtful comment though! What set up do you have?

Not sure I heard you mention the smell compared to traditional RV toilets? Great video.
@BookItTravel
@BookItTravel 2 жыл бұрын
DH- so this one is hard to answer. If the toilet is in our garage we do not smell it. Now if we use it (so there is waste) then we do not use again for another few days it will smell when you flush it. Since the air is being moved around (pulled and pushed to twist the waste). After that we can store it and not smell it at all. We have also used it a few times then had access to toilets so it just sat there and after about a month it does start to smell. The short answer is for a toilet that is self contained they did a great job with it not smelling very much at all. I hope that helps!

It does not smell. But if you leave waste in it for 30 days or so there might be a small odor. Overall we were impressed with the lack of smell.

I went ahead and bought one. 1) the bucket system does not allow for mixing pee and poo and hiding that from animals camping required putting the bags of waste in my trunk. It was hot. I did not do that twice. 2) In the event the world's biggest crybabies decide to throw a life changing temper tantrum and we have to hide from radioactive fallout the shelter won't be of much use if we can't manage waste in it. Can you imagine being stuck in a sealed up area where the point is to prevent air flowing in with poop and pee fermenting?
