Never had one, but from a bunch of videos: PROS: it’s good for occasional use and cheaper/simpler than other options. CONS: Fir regular use, the special cassettees needed can get annoying, for both cost and taking up space. And a few say the whole unit can break after a few years use and won’t work.

I have had one of these toilets in my RV for about three years now. So, it gets limited use. This past week, we used the RV trailer and the toilet would not flush. The air extraction motor would run, but the twist motor would not. No help from Dry Flush other than telling me how to determine if the problem was the circuit board or twist motor. So, I took the thing apart. Turns out the twist motor was seized due to rust. Really, rust...never wet but definitely a humid environment due to forgetting to put a tube of Damp Rid in the trailer when it was in storage for six months. I was able to free up the motor, lubricate it and reassemble. It works fine now, but for how long. lesson learned: test the flushing before heading out on a camping trip. What we did learn is that if the twist motor fails, you can simple twist it by hand via the black ring. And, yes, the cartridges are expensive. We get maybe 10 flushes before no more room in the bucket. Never run out of media, just space. And, once it gets above about half full, the action is not so great and usually requires more than one flush to capture all the liquid. But, I am keeping it...way better than having to deal with a black tank.
@Van_Liberty
@Van_Liberty 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you. If you're not using it full time, it a system that I would rather have than the a black tank needing conditioner treatments, dump fees and just plain nasty dumping and cleaning the drain thingy. These are expenses to consider when complaining about dry flush costs. No thanks. In the five years I owned a 36' pusher coach, I think I used the toilet about 50 times and I really hated that the last thing do do after a great camping trip was to dump my dumps....Yuk!!!

Composting method is a much cheaper way to go. If you do gardening or grow crops it can be used if not then put it in trash bags. Nothing fancy needed. Only a bucket with an attached toilet seat. But you do need to use saw dust or natural pine pellets without anything added,so no baking soda. You add to the bottom of the bucket and on top of the poop. Also, you can mix pee. I know a lot of folks say you can't, but you can it becomes ammonia which makes great fertilizer. Start a compost pile or throw into a trash bad.if throwing away put bag in Bucket before you start putting waste or anything in Bucket. Also you can always build a cabinet around the Bucket to make it look nice and fancy.

I use it in my off grid cabin that I live full time in. Much better than a composting toilet, but you definitely pay for the convenience at about $2 a flush. That's why I just use it for when I need to sit down for poo or combo. I have a separate porta potty for number 1 and take advantage of the Laveo pee powder. Just 1 tablespoon per pee, and the powder at $7 per pack goes a long way with no need to flush the gel after the powder does its trick.
@thebigmann81

Why is it better if you are off grid? You must not use it for fertilizer. Most folks off grid prefer composting because they can use as fertilizer for gardening or growing crops.

@@ulmersapiens I guess the point is why would it matter if I was off grid or if i feel its better for me. It was my opinion that for me dry flush is better. Yes. I totally agree. I do not like composting at all. I did it as a kid and while growing up thus seeing first hand what I will not do, after doing it. I live off grid and do not triple use fresh water to smell like a sweaty boar hog when I sleep then live in my off grid mansion smelling like the mire I just laid to waste. Methane, in any form is toxic. Where it certainly does not need to be encapsulated for eternity, I don't need a bursting trail following me or a dung heap. A fly is normal and so is a maggot but they are not on my endangered species list to harbor in the back yard. We all have decisions to make per our own. My passion wagon is open for the city council should they find their way. I do not believe that a plastic bag no matter its mil is any more life threatening to the global community than methane is to corn and a poptart. I agree with you 100%. My way is my way. Good sound daily hygiene with clean smelling, stain free clothes without automation is fine for me. No triple uses of fresh water here and I don't lie down wallow and wake up to the mire I laid the day before. My cause for my humanity and decency is right there. Im not here to save the world, the sperm whale or the kangaroo rat. I run across any of that then I do my part...my part only!!! Unfortunately, these questions these people raise about taking a simple human "dump" borders on the fringe of the universally insane. They are in fact looking for those condemnations to point the castigating finger. It gives them their purpose for the fecal storm they run from and then create. Arriving to no where. Thank you for cutting to the chase. And the air just got fresher...

This toilet was not designed to be the main toilet of a household it was designed for occasional use by weekend campers. Many senior campers like them for their 13 foot light weight campers that have a little more than a bed and a toilet because they can no longer crawl in and out of a tent and have to get up and use the bathroom several times a night and hike to the campground bathroom in the dark and sometimes rainy weather. Most campers I know with dry toilets only use them at night and opt to hike to the public campground bathroom during the day making one cartridge last for an entire week long camping trip.

I did the math on a best case scenario on refills. For the max refills (3 refills x 5 packs) they want over $40 in shipping! Either they need some serious help negotiating their freight rates or they’re gouging their customers. Total was $305 or $1.35 per use...for two people using it 3x per day, that’s nearly $200 a month! And that’s assuming you can get 15 uses out of each refill and based on comments of real users, that’s not realistic. A bad case of the stomach flu would be costly. The cost of the refills makes a great concept cost prohibitive.

Since no one mentioned this, mylar is a plastic that lasts forever! It's used here because, of course, it's stronger than regular plastic. Using either plastic bags or mylar adds to the planet's waste problem. But plastic will degrade over thousands of years. Mylar will not. Not only the cost of 15 uses/bag is prohibitive, so is the cost to the planet!

The price for reusing is waaaayyyy off the grid. That said I like this one. I don't look to get the flu or diarrhea every month so the gouge may not be as far-fetched as some stretch it to be. A use of more than one person, occassionally two (maybe) is outstanding for that, only. In looking at this I don't see it as the central mainstay to a household, off grid or not. In those situations I see as a welcomed addition for just a touch of humanity and decency. Im not here to magically do my part as a one-seater and voila...save the world. My part is my little part, for me. I am not here to rewrite a playbook. So for me, singularly and off grid this is absolutely perfect without a bursting trail following behind me or a dung heap for my proud fecal pile on juicy tomatoes. Yes, I am off grid, not in my back yard in an R/V on a power cord to a generac. Good product. Please work on that reuse price. Bags are outrageously expensive. Thank You

Suppose there are a few scenarios where this tech is 'the' solution. Must be so, since I've seen this sort of system around for many years now. Good thing it exists as the myriad local ordinances and worsening public health infrastructure means we need as many potential solutions as possible these days. In general though it is hard to beat the AirHead composter toilet for minimal footprint if you can keep it in a suitably warm environment (bacteria don't like being frozen) and don't mind daily fertilizing your trees and bushes or river when you don't think anybody is watching. But I can understand why most 'experienced' women might prefer the "Jiffy Poop" despite the much higher probability of mechanical failure and supply reorder snafus (better make sure to reorder more 'bags' before Xmas rush) compared to an AirHead. Marine AirHead installs often can add a "mushroom" vent with a solar cell on the cap that powers a second/redundant low draw 12vDC bioreactor output air fan. That should work well on a tiny house roof, thereby, just about eliminating the probability of a complete Airhead system failure. Ultimately, if @Todd's cost analysis below for the dry flush toilet is close enough to accurate for most poopers, then it sounds like a deal killer for tightwads like me. Still appreciate the review by folks that know their s**t though.

Add some sawdust and put the bags in sealable bucket if you want several uses. Empty the big gulp cup each time. Can also use gelling power if you insist you need to piss on your poop.

We used one of these in our tiny home, We liked it at first but it quit working in less than a year, plus the price of the cartridges was insane. We are going with an incinolet instead. These things aren't worth it at all

That’s my thought. The incinolet. I like this for the price, but the bags are cost prohibitive as well as the waste. Seems the incinerator toilet will be less in the long run.

Basically its an expensive diaper genie. If they had a manual operating model with cheaper bags, maybe...currently too expensive.

Or someone could create a urine diverter for this toilet. So only had to use the flush system with #2s. That would save lots of bag uses.

i totALLY AGREE. way to expensive and too much work, i'm sure it would smell, just as the diaper Genie does. It looks very small, does not appear stable and it sits low to the ground and I need a higher seat due to lumbar pain. I will be putting an incinerator toilet in my tiny house.

I can't believe that you would believe that this option isn't too expensive. The real answer to "should you use a dry flush toilet at all?" is probably "No, unless you just don't care about the cost at all."

You didn't show the black rim on that helps hold the bag down, that is thrown out each time. That seems like a lot of money and a lot of waste of garbage bags.

I worked out over 10 years the Laveo toilet would cost me over $10,000 NZD. That and the eco-unfriendliness was a deal breaker.

If you read all comments, you will see that the creator says he installed a sewer line and got rid of this toilet on the same day he filmed this video!! He said there were many problems with it. WTH? Why didn’t he tell us the bad about this toilet? I just purchased the Laveo last week based on this video. This is just wrong.
@TinyHouseBasics
@TinyHouseBasics 3 ай бұрын
@@jeaniej9370 we actually had the laveo toilet in our tiny house for a long time. Installing a sewer line was always a part of the plan so I planned to do the video before I removed the toilet so I could have as much experience with it as possible and I tried to do the video in a non bias way to allow people to come to their own conclusions if it was right for them. It's still a great solution for many circumstances, it's just very pricey over the long run

Nice toilet, but it will get expensive at a dollar a go. If your averaging three cassettes a month at forty five dollars, that's five hundred and forty dollars a year just to flush.

Cool concept, but the unit and the bags are way too expensive. A five gallon bucket and eight gallon trash bags do the same thing for a lot less.

What a wasteful (pun intended) concept this is. Human waste is biodegradable, and this design would have you create methane bombs wrapped in foil AND plastic to be delivered to landfill sites? Only to reward the company with a hefty monthly dividend selling you expensive cartridges! Any use other than boats or planes is just abhorrently absurd!
