The orange juice and raw egg was a popular hangover remedy. Either a raw egg in orange juice, or a raw egg in a beer. I think that the movie was subtly implying that the dad was drinking, probably because of his wife's death.

I think the Atreyu/Bastion thing, is that when he reads the description of Atreyu, that's the way he pictures his self-insert that fits that description, but the way the book works the characters just go with whatever he chose, they were still disappointed it was a small child.

It doesnt hold up, watched it last week, its not what you remembered from my school days. This used to be the film, every time it was raining during breaks or lunch at school, they would slap this film on lol. I cant think of one film from the 80s you can say holds up today, and only one film comes to mind from 93 is Jurassic Park which still holds up today as the only film I can think of currently. Plus, Close Encounters of the third kind, but thats from the 70s.

The issue the author had with the movie was that it only adapts the first half of the book, before the shoe drops and the message he was trying to get across comes out. The second movie loosely adapts the second half, just not very well, but more or less the reason its called the NeverEnding Story in the book is that you lose parts of yourself to the story until it becomes your whole world. The message of the book is about the danger of escapism. For what the movie itself does though, it well made, but that's the reason the Author wanted to distance himself from the movie, not for what's in it, but what's not in it.

Back in 1989 I we visited Germany and went the Bavarian Film Works (at least that was what they were calling it then) and actually saw the real models & puppets used for this movie. The curator there also announced to visitors that the sequel was in production. Great episode Tony

I just don’t understand how the very famous Tony can just sit there on Easter island and not enjoy this movie, it is great, despite its flawlls. Gmork was terrifying as a child, so cool and awesome. Also failed to mention that apart from the big head Tony impersonators at the meeting, you also have some E.T.s and a Star War among other famous aliens if you look carefully. No mention that Noah Hathaway who plays Atreyu also played Harry Potter in the first Troll (the 80’s movies are still so awesome). Also, I swear that originally you couldn’t hear the name that Bastion calls out at all at the end (spoiler, yes it’s Moonchild) but instead it was covered completely by the thunder and lightning. And…let’s not forget the oracle’s bewbs complete with fun rings!

This is pretty faithful to the book. This movie is awesome. The early 80s had a lot of fantasy. I think Legend came out the same year. I saw both in the theater and I still think of them to this day. This type of fantasy doesn't exist anymore. Omg you're obviously younger than me. The horse dies because Atreyu has the amulet. That's the only reason Atreyu doesn't die. I LOVE THAT SCENE!😂 Also, in the book, Atreyu has green skin and purple hair, I think.🤨 It's been a while since I've read it. In the second half of the book, Bastian steps into the book and becomes the protagonist. So basically the movie is only half of the book.

Definitely not overrated. Though based on Tony saying he wished Legend or Krull was on it might not have been dark enough for him? It's nearly a perfect child fantasy film. He seems to dislike how it doesn't over explain things but thats what is so great about it. Its 94 minutes but a tight and consice story. Back when we could tell a story in 90 minutes unlike every movie having to be 2-3 hours and spoonfed to us. We have a conflict, we have good vs bad, we have interesting characters, resolution and happy ending.

@@tsartomato Krull to me is very similar to like Beastmaster where if you love the genre you will enjoy it for what it is. It is definitely not a great film by any means objectively but it is fun. @@tsartomato You find the cinematography bad? This is a gorgeous film with amazing practical effects. The world looks beautiful. You are transported from beautiful rivers, green fields, to chilling blizzards, a creepy swamp and Darkness's lair looks terrifying and majestic. I like Ridley's Scott's style a lot because he allows a lot of scenes to breath and allows the environments to "tell a story". Much like in ALIEN in the opening when nobody is really talking. You hear all the computers come on and the shuttle doors opening and closing. Which brings me to my next part is how I am surprised you think the sound mixing is bad. There are many scenes were the sounds push the narrative (which might be the boring parts you alluded to earlier) but I would have to agree about the overall editing of the scenes. It does cause it to feel a bit convoluted which is why there are i think 3 versions of the film? It might not be everyone's cup of tea much like Blade Runner. I can see how some can see them as boring but I find both worlds so interesting.
@tsartomato
@tsartomato 4 ай бұрын
@@ArtimesPrimes i am talking about cinematography not about props kinema is right there in the name. some people did great props and then people responsible for the camera and people responsible for the editing ruined all their hard work. also i find the so called "nature" more boring than almost anything. it's literally white noise random processes that happen randomly the problem i saw it a couple of years ago and it's so forgettable i cannot even give you examples of how forgettable it is all i remember is the flashes of the devil makeup. all i wrote down that day i already said i probably remember more from krull, there was ugly castle a fight some swamp liam nisson one eyed snake a vfx of a lightning

I like part 2 more, because hbo aired it a million times. But the movie is fine and memorable but doesnt make a lot of sense, so its basically like childhood itself.

I somehow missed all opportunities to see this movie as a kid. Finally saw it about seven years ago and wasn't affect in the same way those who are nostalgic for it were. Was the horse scene sad? A little. I think that opening with it loses a lot of the emotional impact, because I had no sense of chemistry with Atreyu yet.

Damn a Three Amigos and Kangaroo Jack reference I watched those recently for the first time and I enjoyed amigos but really got a kick out or Kangaroo Jack cause I wasn't expecting a Christopher Walkin Role or it to be a crime drama 😂😂

I always liked Neverending Story but I can understand why others don't like it as much. Edit: Ok they convinced me, I definitely suffered from nostalgia induced enjoyment of this movie.

It's still a good movie. Let pretty much any kid watch it and they'll enjoy it. But show it to an adult and the acting/script are very mediocre. So yeah it's over rated in several aspects.

Tony, you went in much too hard. This movie the a keystone of many a childhood. Alright it's a bit loose with the narrative, that kids don't care about none of that. We just wanted that vibe so that we could make-believe that we were some movie hero. The horse, the turtle, the oracle microwaving that dude - good stuff. Telll you what though Tony, good shout about Shadow of the Colossus. In fact Trico the griffin from the sequel Last Guardian also looks a bit like Flakor with his dog head and feathers

You have got to be kidding me. Again - you did not experience this film at the right time to appreciate it. I am sure you will tell us you saw the film as a three year old or something but that does not count. I was born in 1979 so I was about five when it was released - would have been six by the time I saw it on video. I remember seeing the film promoted on a morning show when it was released and they showed the scene where Atreyu is speaking to Gmork. I had never been so excited to see a movie after seeing that scene. And when I did see it I loved it. I cant think of a film before 84 other than Dark Crystal maybe that offers such an immersive fantasy experience for children. I did not even like Dark Crystal as a kid because it was too scary. The Never Ending Story on the other hand is full of likeable and memorable childrens characters. And all kids can identify with the Bastian in some way so its great when he gets revenge on the bullys. ANd ...... seriously wtf? How hip to claim that The Never Ending Story is overrated Tony... Clap clap.

@@theoneonly259 as someone who saw the episode early, you may just wanna skip this one 😅 I don't disagree with anything they said though, I'm quite a bit younger but I did see it around 6 or 7, just never really stuck with me, and I love tons of stuff from the 80s.

Im still bothered by the comments about "what is" falcor. Its a fantasy movie, no one is griping about not being able to recognize fantasy characters ( or horror movie creatures) in other movies, they just accept they are creatures
