The issue the author had with the movie was that it only adapts the first half of the book, before the shoe drops and the message he was trying to get across comes out. The second movie loosely adapts the second half, just not very well, but more or less the reason its called the NeverEnding Story in the book is that you lose parts of yourself to the story until it becomes your whole world. The message of the book is about the danger of escapism. For what the movie itself does though, it well made, but that's the reason the Author wanted to distance himself from the movie, not for what's in it, but what's not in it.

I just don’t understand how the very famous Tony can just sit there on Easter island and not enjoy this movie, it is great, despite its flawlls. Gmork was terrifying as a child, so cool and awesome. Also failed to mention that apart from the big head Tony impersonators at the meeting, you also have some E.T.s and a Star War among other famous aliens if you look carefully. No mention that Noah Hathaway who plays Atreyu also played Harry Potter in the first Troll (the 80’s movies are still so awesome). Also, I swear that originally you couldn’t hear the name that Bastion calls out at all at the end (spoiler, yes it’s Moonchild) but instead it was covered completely by the thunder and lightning. And…let’s not forget the oracle’s bewbs complete with fun rings!

This is pretty faithful to the book. This movie is awesome. The early 80s had a lot of fantasy. I think Legend came out the same year. I saw both in the theater and I still think of them to this day. This type of fantasy doesn't exist anymore. Omg you're obviously younger than me. The horse dies because Atreyu has the amulet. That's the only reason Atreyu doesn't die. I LOVE THAT SCENE!😂 Also, in the book, Atreyu has green skin and purple hair, I think.🤨 It's been a while since I've read it. In the second half of the book, Bastian steps into the book and becomes the protagonist. So basically the movie is only half of the book.

Definitely not overrated. Though based on Tony saying he wished Legend or Krull was on it might not have been dark enough for him? It's nearly a perfect child fantasy film. He seems to dislike how it doesn't over explain things but thats what is so great about it. Its 94 minutes but a tight and consice story. Back when we could tell a story in 90 minutes unlike every movie having to be 2-3 hours and spoonfed to us. We have a conflict, we have good vs bad, we have interesting characters, resolution and happy ending.

@@tsartomato You find the cinematography bad? This is a gorgeous film with amazing practical effects. The world looks beautiful. You are transported from beautiful rivers, green fields, to chilling blizzards, a creepy swamp and Darkness's lair looks terrifying and majestic. I like Ridley's Scott's style a lot because he allows a lot of scenes to breath and allows the environments to "tell a story". Much like in ALIEN in the opening when nobody is really talking. You hear all the computers come on and the shuttle doors opening and closing. Which brings me to my next part is how I am surprised you think the sound mixing is bad. There are many scenes were the sounds push the narrative (which might be the boring parts you alluded to earlier) but I would have to agree about the overall editing of the scenes. It does cause it to feel a bit convoluted which is why there are i think 3 versions of the film? It might not be everyone's cup of tea much like Blade Runner. I can see how some can see them as boring but I find both worlds so interesting.

This take is about to get Tony more heat than he had for his Ghostbusters Afterlife review. You don't roast an 80's kids classic and get away with it. Thumbs down, brigade.... DO YOUR WOOOOOOORST!😅

Im still bothered by the comments about "what is" falcor. Its a fantasy movie, no one is griping about not being able to recognize fantasy characters ( or horror movie creatures) in other movies, they just accept they are creatures

I've just looked the wolf's name up. How can you get "Grum Grum" out of "Gmork"? Now, after me, "G-mork".
