While the New 3DS XL is better, the New 2DS XL was the only model still in production by Nintendo when support was dropped. For a while there, it was the only model you could buy new (at a reasonable price). So omitting the 3D feature isn't really an upgrade, it's a downgrade. The triggers are different, but again, I didn't feel as if they were a significant upgrade compared to any other 3DS model. They were just slightly changed. The game slot is a nice design change. I like that it's covered, but again, all my 3DS consoles read games without any issue. Even my old 2011 original 3DS. Honestly I've always used the 3D on my N3DSXL and I like it a lot, it somehow makes the low screen resolution less jarring to my eyes, it distracts me from the obviously aliased edges. That 3D effect is half the reason why I still play my 3DS occasionally despite owning a Vita, Switch, and Gaming PC.
@NeanderMeander2 жыл бұрын
I agree with you! The 3D effect does distract from those things. It makes playing a game interesting as well. I can play any game in 2D. But you to have it actually pop out of the screen is amazing! Especially without glasses.
@guerrierim154 ай бұрын
@@NeanderMeandermy favorite thing about 3D effect is how it makes text boxes and other UI elements pop out! And even with that, it still provides enough depth variation to simultaneously show background elements further back from the main layer that your eyes believe as where the screen is in physical space relative to yourself. It’s this two way depth that I love so much. It’s the reason why I have that 3D slider always maxed out. Honestly, so few people got the new 3DS relative to the OG, that the initial bad rep that the 3D effect got thanks to that first iteration has taken years and years to have reverse thanks to the “New” iteration of 3D. It really is crazy to think about though-that such a thing like the New 3DS exists. It is the combination of two big creative bets that Nintendo made: dual screens and 3D gaming. I’m sure they cared whether third-party game developers adopted such massive and unique hardware changes. But the thing is that they did it anyway despite nobody truly asking them to do so. They did because they got the idea, could see themselves making many fun games using the features, and were confident enough in those dreams to lead the way. This imo makes the New 3DS (and its library of top tier games) the pinnacle of Nintendo creativity. It just oozes that essence and is so visceral when you use the darn thing. It’s simply magical. Add on top of that the homebrew scene and all the special editions…and people wonder why they are so expensive (don’t get me wrong, I hat that they are). These things are so very valuable.

Yeah, while there are some neat things about the New 2DS XL (like the game card and SD card slot cover), the other New models come out on top easily. People really need to give the 3D more of a chance; I always tell others that it took me about 45 minutes to adjust to the effect and be rid of the eye strain for good. 5 minutes is not enough to test it out, which is I suspect what most people give it.

The fact I can attach a screen cleaning cloth with a nylon thread that has a mini bag to hold the cloth in (helps that I already had some from DS release pre-orders)? So I can keep my screen clean all the time, and the general button layout being larger when I have long fingers, making it feel more natural? Nevermind if I want to replace the N3DS XL screen, it's not easy, but it's doable. The 2DS XL has a better design, and its slick. The 2DS XL can be less babied than the 3DS XL. The 2DS XL has many very cool grips. The 2DS XL survives more falls. The 2DS XL is cheaper. I had a regular 3DS XL and was planning on getting a New 3DS the next time my mom went to the US, and then they announced the 2DS XL. I just wanted the New model to play Xenoblade Chronicles and Earthbound on top of the games I already had at the time, so the 2DS XL's lower price and some QOL improvements (such as the cartridge slot being tucked away safely) made me go for it instead. I never cared for 3D, in part cuz I'm the kind of person who prefers to preserve battery so I can play longer without being tethered to a charger (and now that's a necessity cuz my charger is busted, it's a headache to get it to connect). Coming from the 3DS XL, the 2DS XL does feel superior despite an obvious cheaper build quality. The thumbstick feels good, the buttons are clicky enough (this is I problem I always had with the DSi XL and the 3DS XL as their buttons were so stiff, but especially the DSi XL's), the design of the shell is slicker, and the speakers are louder for whatever reason, despite the inconvenient placement. It's also considerably lighter, so it's comfortable to hold in many positions, whereas the 3DS XL required me to sit a certain way cuz it just got so uncomfortable. If someone's considering the 3DS and doesn't care much for the 3D effect, the 2DS XL really is the way to go. There aren't too many games exclusive to it, but I'd say it's worth getting for Xenoblade Chronicles alone, which is worth checking out when you consider that they managed to put such a huge game in a tiny, weak system and it still looks gorgeous. It also plays quite well without too much loss in performance where you'd expect to get about 20 FPS most of the time. It's a shame that Konami couldn't be bothered to update Metal Gear Solid 3 to take advantage of the New 3DS's improved hardware, so it still plays horribly on any New 3DS model.

I decided to sell my New 3DS XL for a New 2DS XL, a telescopic stylus and some games and I have no regrets. Yes, the speakers are worse but thing is I usually play with my headphones anyways. Plus, the flap cover for the card slot and SD card is way better than having to make sure your games don’t fall out and not having to unscrew the back of the console to replace the SD card, especially if you’re apart of the homebrew community. Only real issue is the TN panels but honestly TN does not automatically equal a bad display, yes it’s worse than an IPS display however it’s not as bad as say a TN panel on a DS lite or the Non-XL DSi.

Recently got a brand new NEW 2DS XL that someone had bought and never used when they were still being supported. I was looking to get a 3DS Capture Card, and NEW 2DS XLs are the only models supported nowadays. I got the card last week and I’m very happy with it now, but I haven’t transferred my system data over from my NEW 3DS XL, solely because of the lack of 3D effect. It’s something that I think is really important to the 3DS experience, and is why I’ve always seen the NEW 3DS XL as the definitive model (as much as I like the interchangeable plates on the regular NEW 3DS). It’s a bit of a conundrum for me, as I would also like to be able to record my digital games without making a new account and repurchasing them. It’s not ‘removing a dimension’, they’re still 3D games, I also use headphones so the speakers don’t bother me. The different plastic ‘feels’ cheaper but it hides scratches so I think it’s justified. The new 2DS is the only 3DS sold directly from Nintendo’s website (refurbished), and I like buying directly from the company and not on eBay or other places (they have given me issues before which I won’t get into). Although the 3DS gives options, I don’t need that, I know what I want from a 3DS system and the new 2DS just has what I need, making the price lower. The speakers themselves are actually the same ones on the switch, as I've replaced sets of both. On replacing parts though.. The 2dsxl is indefensibly badly designed with longevity in mind, I got one second hand and felt the need to replace the battery, circle pad and volume slider, which were awful to do. On the 3d models, just pop the backplate off and remove the battery(the battery in the N2dsxl is also the same as the switch Pro controller battery). Another fantastic 3DS video. It brightens my day to see somebody love the 3DS seemingly as much as I do. Your last line really stuck with me. I definitely have a bond with my 3DS. Its what got me back into game collecting. Like you I prefer the new 3DS over the new 2DS. One of the biggest reasons is that I was one of the lucky ones and got an IPS top screen with a used black New 3DS XL I got off ebay. Its not my primary console as I switch between all my models to cut down on wear and tear, so I do play my new 2DS XL often. One thing that I really like about it, is the weight. It's not much lighter than the New 3DS XL but I can definitely feel it. As a result I feel in better melding with my hands when I play it. For me anyway. Another thing I like is the flap where you put the game card and where the sd card is. No longer do I have to unscrew the back plate to take the sd card out when I try and retrieve screencaps. I often go back and watch all your 3DS videos because I just love damn thing and I can tell you do too. I'd be curious to see your 3DS collection of games and talk about your experiences with certain titles. It's clearly a strong point of your videos. Equating your memories and feelings into the story you're trying to tell. Enjoyed the video it was a great way to wake up to on a Sunday morning.

That's awesome you found one with an IPS top screen. I got extremely lucky to have bought a New 3DS XL with both top and bottom IPS displays and a New 3DS with both IPS screens. When I bought them I had no idea that was even a thing. The 2DS XL has a great feel to it. I've come to appreciate it because I spent more than a few minutes playing it. The flap in the front is also a fantastic change. I don't know why Nintendo thought it was a good idea to put the micro sd card under the back faceplate on the New 3DS and New 3DS XL. Thank you so much for watching this video and my others. It's great to encounter people who feel the way I do about these little devices and games. I do have some very fond memories with many 3DS games. I fly all over the US for work and I used to play my 3DS everywhere I went. It made those long stays in the airports and flights easy to go though. Your video suggestion is really good. I may just have to make one or maybe even a few about those experiences. Thank you again for watching my videos and coming back to this one. I'm also really glad you commented.

@@Transientimage I didn't travel much during 2020. I've started to travel more this years and I expect next year to be traveling somewhat often. I trade off with them. I have used my Switch more this year. Because it's also a home console, it's great being able to play those games on the go as well. I don't have split my time up between them. Though, I take my 3DS sometimes. There are games I really like on the 3DS! It's a little more risky taking the 3DS because of how much they've gone up in value. If my Switch gets lost or stolen, I can most likely find another one. However, if one of my special edition 3DS consoles goes missing, I'll have a really hard time finding another one at a decent price. When I get ready for a trip, my decision to take either consoles depends on where I'm going, how long I'll be there, and what I feel like playing when I leave. I do play my 3DS quite a bit at home though. It's my Zelda machine. Having most of the retro Zelda games available makes it easy pickup and play one. Do you still play your 3DS? I LOVE the hand feel of the 2DS, but I NEED the larger screens on the 2DS XL. I'm not able to play 3D due to vison issues, AND anytime I turn it on, I get really bad vertigo. I do own several other models (DSI, DS Lite, 3DS XL, and New 3DS XL), but more than anything, I pick up my 2DS XL. I don't have to squint or pull the console up to my eyeballs to see tiny things in the game. It's also easier for me to play touch screen titles because there's more screen real estate. However, I agree with you that it feels so lightweight and cheap! I keep mine in a protective clear case, and then when I'm not playing on it, it says in its padded carrying case. some things of the NEW2DSXL if they are bad, the front camera and the rear cameras sometimes confuse you how high you need to direct the camera, if the speakers are not so loud and you can cover them with your hand, but their screens, controls and extras like the gyroscope respond so well, its screen makes the games look very good it even seems that scanlines are added to it, the console is perfect to play, if we know that it does not have the 3D effect, But without it, it makes the screen look even clearer and sharper, I have the white and orange version, I don't regret having it and continue playing on it, I know that the following comment is out of place, but if the console is modified via software and console games are played that it does not have officially, these still look more beautiful

I am doing a similar thing with Metroid. I didn't get into the series until I played Samus Returns on my N3DSXL which was awesome. Still I wasnt going to play the rest, but then Dread was announced, which hyped up the whole series. I happen to have Zero Mission so I played thru that on my AGS101. Then I bought Super Metroid on the N3DSXL and just finished it like literally this morning. Next up is Fusion on the same machine (officially only for us fellow ambassadors!). Even though I liked Nintendo since I fully completed SMW back in the day, the 3DS family is what slowly got me into many of the other Nintendo games and franchises I otherwise skipped. Link Between Worlds is the first Zelda game I finished. Kirby Triple Deluxe is the first Kirby game I completed. Even the first time I finished Mario 64 is the DS version on an original 3DS. Sure I have many Nintendo consoles and games, but something about the mix of portability and playability of the 3DS family just seems to be the perfect balance.

It was the 3DS that really pulled me back into gaming. Having retro console games on the go was awesome, because I travel so much for work. 2ds xl is amazing i actually think it feels the best quality then all the other models, but i will say the speaker placement is so bad i always cover it and hardly hear it compared to the other models. If i had to choose one i would pick the regular 2ds just because of the speaker location and a plus it feels the best to hold as well.

I own a New 3DS and a New 2DS XL (which I bought to mod). My New 3DS is still my primary 3DS console coz its the one i bought first and have spent the most time with. And, as you said, there are some games which I really appreciate being able to turn the 3D effect on for. That being said, I actually really like the New 2DS XL. My New 3DS is the original model with the changeable faceplates so it has the smaller screens and overall smaller body. Having the 2DS with its bigger screens is really nice. It feels comfortable in the hands and the screens are noticeably bigger. Plus, I tend to play with the sound off so it doesnt really matter if i cover the speakers. My main gripe with the system is just how thin that top screen is. It does feel slightly delicate and flimsy compared to the thicker 3DS screen. But I tend to play sat in bed or at a table so its not a massive issue. The system does feel sleek though. Overall, I really like my 2DS. I still reach for my 3DS first but I do really like the feel and design of the New 2DS XL, despite its flaws. And, as I said, I’m planning on modding it so, once I do, I’ll probably be using it a lot more for what it can do (I’m really looking forward to being able to record footage).

The New 2DS XL is a really nice little device. If you're careful with it, it will last a long time. I use mine primarily for 2D only games. If I'm playing a 3DS game, I prefer to play it with the 3D on. I know, I'm one of those weirdos that actually like the 3D effect. Sounds like you like it too.

Admittedly yes I could have just bought my own switch at a cashies for the same price, hell there was a neon switch for the exact same price at the same cashies store, but I've never had a 3ds system and my family already has a switch so I can play switch games if needed

My biggest dilemma when I played my 2DS is whether to call it a "3DS" or a "2DS" when asked about it in public by friends or family who aren't into games. I ended up calling it a "3DS" even though it pained me a bit, because it pained me more to try and explain the naming scheme
@NeanderMeander2 жыл бұрын
I know, right? Nintendo and their console names. I would like to know what happened in the meetings where they decided what they would call them. What would you think guys would be a decent price for New nintendo 2ds xl. And for Nintendo 2ds (the regular One) both New consoles, not pre-owned. In my country they have the new nintendo 2ds xl for $140. And the 2DS is pricing around $80 both includes a pre-installed game , these are prices from official retailers and as I mentioned before, these are completely new, not previously used. So there's a $60 difference, I don't really care that much about the exclusives new 3ds /2ds games (xenoblade chronicles for example) I'm looking forward to play mostly Zelda's, Mario's and metroid's games... And I also don't care at all about using the 3ds feature, that's why I'm just looking exclusively for one of the 2ds models (the regular or new 2ds xl) but what I really really like is being able to close the console and to have those two screens hahaha. I'm really interested in taking the console with me and I think new nintendo 2ds xl will do better for me in that case. But idk if those extra $60 are worth it mainly because of just being able to close the console. What would you say guys? Edit: I also thought about just getting the old 3ds so I can close my console, thinking it was in a better price. But after all, at least in my country, the old 3ds (new, from retail store) is around $125, so is a difference of just $15 with the new 2ds xl, which makes me think that I don't see it worth it. I would prefer in that case to rather spend those extra $15 for the new 2ds xl. So yup, I think my options will still the same, either old 2ds ($80) or new 2ds xl ($140)
@NeanderMeander2 жыл бұрын
Well, the original 2DS has smaller screens. That an the body of the console are the biggest differences. Do you like larger screen and screen protection when it's closed? Or do you like smaller screens and a solid body? I don't think you can go wrong with either of them.

@@NeanderMeander - I can image how Nintendo would have handled the Nintendo 3DS and some of the games they published for it if the general public did not have such a bad perception of 3D. Super Mario 3D Land was a good representation of what creative 3D effects can be done.

@@NYCJoeBlack Agreed! The 3D effect on the original 3DS and the 3DS XL was pretty bad. I personally had a hard time keeping my head in the right spot without wavering out of that sweet spot. I spent most of my playtime on the 3DS with games that were “designed” (apparently) around the 3D function, and I never thought that it added more than “that’s kinda cool” to any of them. In my opinion the 3D function was never more than a marketing gimmick that handicapped the console: in R&D, console price, and presumably in screen resolution.

I have the New 3dsxl whereas my friend has the New 2dsxl. The thing I don't like about the New 3dsxl is the 3d screen is really heavy and it makes the system top heavy where it feels like it's going to flip out of your hand. If they had made the new 2DS XL have USB Type C and better displays it would’ve been a massive improvement for the system. The thing that sucks is that for the MSRP this system was launched for, they could’ve really done a lot better. I know it’s impossible now and was incredibly unlikely then but if the New 2DS XL had OLED displays then it would’ve been great to see. Yeah that would make the system a lot more expensive to produce, it could’ve been a major selling point for the system and I know I would’ve bought it in an instant. There’s a reason people still prefer the original vita over the slim and that’s because of the screen it had.
