If you are a racer and you know you're racing one track, at one elevation, at one temperature, learning how to become a carb wizard is a competitive advantage. but for myself - someone who grew up riding trails from 1500-4500 in whatever weather you got that day, we ran rich to be safe and i never once had the privilege of running a perfectly jetted carb. 2nd gear into 3rd had a very specific bog that i knew how to double clutch the rpms out of on a dead sprint. the first time i ran my bike with an lectron i almost died clicking into 3rd when the front wheel shot off the ground and the power band ripped my face off. it made the throttle more responsive in every single gear (almost too responsive at first) and it completely changed my muscle memory of exploiting the clutch to get off bottom. for a trail rider that doesn't want to or have the time to tear down a carb it's the best thing for a 2 stroke since they turned the shocks the other way around. 1/4 throttle and 3/4 throttle feel like very different things now. weirdly i feel the bike has more compression to kick but is easier to start. Could just be because of the fresh top end around the time the lectron was installed, but in my experience even cold i rarely use the choke to kick the bike over. i'm no rocket surgeon just my experience. it's now a must have for me

I'm old school and would use my Altimeter and Air Density Gauge and Barometer for the different Altitudes and Weather conditions and carry various jets to setup my carburetor . My buddies always wondered why my bike ran so good . Man , that Lectron Carburetor sure took the guess work out of the Carburetor adjustment's . I knew they were really good , but I didn't know they are that darn good . Thank you , Jeff for sharing your experience and video on the awesome carburetor from Lectron . I am going to order one for my special project build chevy kawi kx 250 two stroke. It seems like the consensus by listening to riders that can squeeze two strokes to their potential well simply just agrees on increase performance. Not saying stock Carbs can be good properly jetted. And obviously a dyno can give you great numbers and what not, but actually feeling the bike out on the track throttle connection and how it performs is in the end my justification for getting one. And yeah some great bike builds for example (luczaks) and Seelys has been paired with a lectron and in connection to some of the best engine tuners in the buiss have produced great engines with the lectrons together with heavy engine modifications aswell. Yeah it looks sexy aswell. I guess the new bottom end makes the analog to the feel of the standard carbs more than the H series? But i might be wrong there. Great ride and video 👌🏼

The AMA needs to drop the two stroke handicap from national races. In other organizations that run 2T and 4T equal cc to cc it has been extremely successful. Privateers can run 2T on a lower budget and still be competitive.
@ethan_martin3 жыл бұрын
What organizations are you referring to? I think the handicap could use some adjustments (e.g. the ktm 150sx is a much better alternative to the 250 4 stroke than a 125), but definitely _not_ equal cc. All else being equal, two strokes just measure higher in overall power, so it wouldn't really make sense to allow 250 2 strokes to race with 250 4 strokes in an ultra-competitive scenario for example.

Personally from my experience is that the lectrons are good. They work. But you wont see significant power gains from a properly jetted carb to the lectron carb. But most people have mis jetted bikes and see significant gains because the jetting automatically adjusts from a misjetted setting to a "properly jetted" lectron. For me personally im gonna put the 800 into a Hinson and 30min to swap jets
@user-mo8tm4jw2l3 жыл бұрын
I spent over 40 hours tuning the lectron to get it to run “just right” at my altitude because I’m ocd af when it comes to how my motor runs. Their settings were NEVER even close to right. Despite very very accurate descriptions of altitude, parts and rider skill level. Lectron was always off. Never right. Close yes. Good enough to ride for a trail ride. Yep. Absolutely. But if you chase perfection in how your bike runs your going to notice a HUGE power gain with a standard carb compared to the lectron. Can’t agree with ya more man. My lectrons on eBay right now 😂😂 ya just can’t beat a pocket full of brass. Jetting is easy if your detail minded.

Listen to StankeDog on what he does. I think you leave a little power on the table with the Lectron but you certainly have to fiddle with it less. Especially this time of year. For the carb just loosen the subframe lower bolts. Remove the upper and pull the muffler off. Fooling with the intake boot and space adds enough time that just rotating the subframe speeds it up. Unless you are on an xc or xcw with a battery....

40 years of 2-stroke experience here and i can say it sounds dang near spot on. IMO the "bog" some are referring to is due to deep rutted mud. You might, and i do mean might, get a little more overrev by adding more power jet but exhaust components play a role in that. It should be noted that overrev is not a healthy engine characteristic long term. Your point of being able to go anywhere and have the bike perform very well was missed I suppose. Which is exactly why i switched to a Lectron in 2019. Love the 2t content, and hats off clearing the finish line jump in the mud and rain. how do you think it compares to a mikuni TMX38 carb? what altitude range can they cover without having to change jets?
@orijinalgamesta9738 Жыл бұрын
@@FourthWayRanch i can only speak from my experience with a Mikuni 38 and a Lectron HV38 and that is limited to 2 dirt bikes. Everything else ive had came with Kiehin. A 2017 ktm 250 and a 2019 ktm 150. First is both came with the same exact mikuni38 carb. The 250 runs great and the 150 ran like poo. When i put the Lectron on the 150 it ran better and more efficiently but i was missing some bottom end torque. After some Q and A with several people who know much more than i do i bought and installed a Kiehin 36mm from JD Jetting for the 150. Completely new bike. The increased velocity of air flow through the smaller diameter carb is exactly what the small bore 150 needed to get the bottom end power i wanted for trail riding purposes. The Lectron in theory needs no further adjustment incr you have it tuned to your bike. There are no jets. Only a metering rod. From what i can gather, it works in conjunction with air volume and density to determine the fuel/air ratio which means you should never have to move the metering rod once its set no matter the altitude or temperature. I ride 400 to 2500 feet ASL so altitude has never really been a factor for me, only temperature. Hope this helps

36 years of twostroke experience talking here: You had a badly carbureted bike before. I couldn't believe you continued to ride your bike there as it was pretty clear it was WAAAAY too lean. If you had the knowledge or experience of how a properly carbureted engine runs you would have stopped immediately, also to prevent the engine from a possible seizure. Anyway - it just showed me that your technical knowledge on twostrokes is lacking. So i can definitely understand the switch to the Lectron...BUT i have to tell you i'm not impressed on how it sounds. To me it doesn't sound crisp. to me it seems still lean down low and it seems maybe a tad fat on top? It doesn't seem to rev out as it should. Anyway - if you are already happy that's ok but i would love to see you ride a properly jetted carb. Keihins aren't all that sensitive as well so there is no constant changing of jets. Anyway - still love your videos, especially the ones on twostrokes :)

Never hated the Lectron myself, always thought they are the Mona Lisa of Carburettors stunning to look at great design and best feature for mine is the clear float bowl, wish all carbs had that feature, esp with today’s shit fuel. Btw your fuel line looks tight, taut. Haven’t tried the Billettron Lectron so can’t comment on performance and until ya compare the best 3 IMO hard to say, but back in 2018 I switched back to a Keihin PWK with the STIC Metering Block vs the Lectron and Smart carb at the time and blown away, now my go to, as nice as the Lectron looks, I don’t look at my carb while riding so it’s a moot point. Performance and ease of use and my bikes come with a Keihin so much better cost option. I’d like to see back to back dyno runs with this and stock carb to see if it worth spending the money, learning to jet a carb doesn’t cost money, if it made more hp through out the rev range I could be persuaded
@crazychad27203 жыл бұрын
The lectron will give you a better overall running in varied conditions but a properly jetted kehien pwk carb will outperform any other carb available. But that would take different tweaks and some jet changes from time to time. The lectron always seems amazing because people make no attempt at jetting their stock carb or are just not good and trial and error. But we are not talking much power difference but the lectron makes a 2 stroke easier to own and ride.

I think that from what I’ve heard the OEM carbs are better if you wanna tune them, and I’ve done mine and performance is perfect. But for someone like Jeff who is always traveling and doesn’t have time to tinker I understand the switch. I also think Jeff’s relationship with Lectron themselves will insure he never has a bike related issue due to the carb. Interesting to see what will happen with it.

how do you think they compare to mikuni TMX38 carbs? especially for covering a large altitude range? I wonder if they're prone to icing cause of the higher air flow

I have a 2009 yz250, installed the Lectron. The best upgrade I have ever done. Carbs should go away like the Dodo Bird. Only problem I had on install was it was too Lean, I had to turn out the Bar two full turns. I don't even use the Choke, it starts on the second kick every time. Yamaha should have these on from the factory.

i really wish people would take the time to properly jet the stock carb as opposed to wasting 500$ on a lectron. talk to any 2 stroke tuner and they will tell you nothing beats a properly tuned carburetor

He gets it for free so he probably has no interest in jetting the bike.

Me too. I tried to give the lectron a chance. Coming from a background of jetting and liking all my bikes running crisp and perfect I just could NOT get the lectron to be right. It was always down on power. No matter the altitude. Even when it ran it’s best. It was never crisp enough even though it would get close when the weather was perfect. It just never had the oomph the stock carb did when jetted correctly. The sheer amount of plugs the lectron fouled for me over that time I used it is INSANE. Never fouled one with a mik or keihin. I went from the mik to a keihin 36/39 taper bore mod carb from dicks because I put a 36 keihin on my 300 and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Just wanted some more over rev from the 250 so did the taper bore mod. Never looking back. There is no carb I’ve used on this bike that’s been better than a keihin but the stock mik if your anal can be jetted very well and run very well. For about 60 bucks instead of over 600 bucks you could just jet the stock carb right. Or still spend half the lectron and get a keihin and be super dialed.

@@user-mo8tm4jw2l the only reason I got one is elevation change. I race harescrambles and vary a lot in elevation. Sadly the organization I race in does not allow practice before the race because it gives an unfair advantage to riders. I also have a 2003 cr 250 which I noticed to be one of the toughest bikes to jet that I have owned. I like jetting carbs and getting the bike perfect just the way I want it. It’s just tough changing temperatures changing altitudes and not being able to test ride you bike.

DUDE!? I didn't even know you were there that day. LOL- was there with some buds recording. I would stopped by and said yo! I'm new to MX and dirt bikes technically speaking. Just turn 44 in October and just got my first bike last spring (2020) be watching your videos with a host of others. And started MX this year. Ran 4 Races this season with GoPro on my channel of them. Raced at Twisted MX, Polka Dots and Baja Acres (6 weeks after breaking 5 ribs at Twisted-ha ha) SO Fun! This was my first time at this track and it was pretty gnarly. But deff fun! Can't wait for the Spring. P.S. Do you know of any indoor tracks near us? (I'm in Livonia) Andrew C.

I’ve been using a lectron Carb on my 2018 250sx since it was new and I can say it works anywhere from sea level to about 7,000 feet then you can feel the elevation rob you of power. Also the stock reeds are garbage they should be changed ASAP

Mikuni has a flaw with the center block oring that fails and the stock slide is incorrect, all that being fixed properly the mikuni is still not as good as the keihin 38. The lectern and smart carb are basically single circuit designs and cannot be tuned as precisely as the tri circuit carbs like mikuni/keihin

Does KTM still recommend 60:1? My older 250SX had that in the owners manual & I've always used Maxima Formula K2 at 60:1 and spent a couple hours getting it dialed in jetting & power valve spring wise & it is the PERFECT DO ANY/ALL THINGS bike. 13 counter sprocket for moto with 3 gear starts, BANG-BY BY 450's, swap out the tank & put on a 14 counter sprocket & head on out for some AMA District GP's or nice long trail rides. It will bog all the down to almost nothing, LUG-CHUG quick finger on the clutch lever & AWAY YOU GO. I put on a different pipe so that it was thick enough to SURVIVE the hazards of ""HANGING OUT, MAN"" the way they do & with the USFS Spark arrestor the power band smoothed out & revved out longer, perhaps the extra length was the cause? GPR4 "Under The Bar" to take away the twitches & all is good in the land of the orange rocket ship to FUNLAND!!! Sure use way more rear brake pads than with the 4st !!! Wonderful do it all machine, have fun....................MR

I was really looking into them, but the fact that there is no TPS system on them really removes some of the appeal. Having the throttle able to provide inputs into the CDI as a 3d ignition map is really kinda a huge deal that I feel they blow off. It's very old school. Meanwhile, Smartcarb has all the modern tech for the same price-point, or even better yet, a STIC can be had for half the price.
