The inspiration of 72 Seasons came out of a book James Hetfield was reading about childhood, basically, and sorting out childhood as an adult. And 72 seasons is basically the first 18 years of your life. It delves into the crucial formative years of our lives when the die is cast to determine who we become as adults. The song highlights how childhood traumas or negative experiences shape our adult selves.

Trauma is mostly good. It makes you interesting and have depth. Just have to be able to be self aware and you can use it for good like drive and ambition in your life, helping others, thinking out of the box, handling stress better than others,etc. But society wants us all to be carbon copies or in same box. It’s why i think school will all be done on computer and you will get your socialization from other places that aren’t even created yet. It’s society that screws up up when we’ve been thru or seen bad things but 100s of years ago everyone went thru that or saw it and so society wasn’t as harsh as now and that’s what made us feel worse. We need James Hetfields and we wouldn’t without Trauma. We might not have Elizebeth without trauma and her drive. You just have to accept and be self aware so you don’t use it as excuse in your life or think your trauma is the worst-you only know what you know so it’s your choice from there and you have to learn that. You’ll be fine and special if that’s what you want and one big thing is you have to see the trauma you went thru with your new older brain because people get stuck looking at bad memories as if they’re still that age. Use your older brain to view it. You can’t have good without bad. Can’t have happy without sad. Forgive yourself and the people that did it to you and it will give you incredible strength -sounds stupid but it’s where the freedom is & will set you free from the jail and the walls you built.

As someone who knows a bit about vocal technique, James has definitely improved his technique to the point that it always hits right and It doesn't sound like he's straining his voice. I have to say that earlier albums are hard for me to listen to due to how forced some of the higher notes sound. But, regardless, Metallica has always had great vocals!!! 🤘🤘

What's funny is that too many of the old school fans shit on them since 91 for that exact reason. They had, and have, a lot of musical influences and didn't want to keep playing the same riffs. I think it's a good thing they tried new things, and that some failed. If they didn't try new things we wouldn't have gotten S&M or Garage, Inc. James uses his voice almost as percussion. To me that's his most distinctive ability. He always did it to some extent, but it really showed in Load (1996), which I wouldn't say is the band's best, but it's the one James Hetfield's voice really perfected this quality which punctuates the songs rhythmically.

72 seasons album has been my favorite, it's definitely a slow grower for some fans but it hooked me right away. Shadows Follow and Screaming Suicide have been my jammers. But for reaction and analysis, Too Far Gone and Inamorata are excellent choices imo. But man, this album is worth a whole listen, I love Metallica.

James did an interview when the album came out. Apparently he had a home studio where he went and woodshedded the vocals, figuring out what he liked before taking it back to finish up at HQ. This was a new thing for him, where he didn’t have to worry about who was waiting for him to finish. This album has some of the interesting vocal work of any of their albums, imho.

Perhaps my biggest let down in the album is that most of the good and not so good songs have more or less the same base. I enjoy variaty and consistancy, thou the style is consistant, to me this album just lacked passion. Compared to Harwired for example. I understand that not every album can hit the mark with everybody. It is hard for me to pin point exactly what's not quite there for me. I listen to 72 from time to time. Thou not my first choice it is still a good album.

​@@halla359 I would agree with what you said in the 80s to early 90s but Metallica's song writing has gone down hill a lot since then. I like the last 3 albums, but none of them rate higher then a 6/10. Voivod, and Kreator are releasing better albums. The problem with Metallica's song writing is that they've lost the ability to self edit themselves to the point where their albums/songs become bloated, and to lots of people, boring. If they trimmed down their song/album lengths and made things more concise then they would be much stronger. Still most bands can't touch their early output. But Iron Maiden has suffered the same fate as Metallica the last couple albums. They don't self edit anymore.

I woke up from a dream last night in which Elizabeth started a band. She, of course, was the singer and all of her band was just the guys from Metallica but each were playing different instruments than what they normally play. For their first video, they did a cover of "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. Binge watching your many analyses of music, is great fun! It is refreshing to see how you are able to find virtue in most all songs and genre. Very often, coming from a mostly serious music background - either as performers or as mere listeners - we develop a most unfair bit of snobbery towards anything musically disparate from what we happen to know or wish to discover. I grew up with this band (‘80’s) and now live up the street from Lincoln Centre and The Metropolitan Opera House which affords one the opportunity to take-in concerts on a whim - and to which I take full advantage of the geography. I learned a bit from this. It's interesting how in addition to how lines typically rhyme, his vocal phrasing approach as a goal, he tries to make sure that lines up as well. One thing I took away from the "there's breathing out, but NOT back in" - how he goes up in tone in "not" gives off this conversational approach; it's like he's speaking to the listener. He's telling you the story. Painting the picture for you. That inflection of how it's important to him that you understand what he's "telling" you.

I think this song may be their most artistic. The theme of the album deals with the first 18 years of life. We find references to this in the lyrics. I think the intro and outro are expressions of before and afterlife. They're expressing the seasons of life in blocks with distinct vocal and rythmatic expression that express seasons or periods of our lives. As far as the music video. The sun is represented centrally with the band at times, spining around the sun. There is a lot of fire, but there is some blue, cool coloring, which is expressing to me up and down of life. Lastly, I think the length of the song is intentional in that it takes you for a ride and is almost tiring, almost too much. Just like life. Lastly, I want to say that about half the reason I watch these videos is just for Elizabeth's expressions. She wears the experiences on her sleeve, if you will.

I love Metallica. I've been a fan since 1989. I've been going to all their concerts for almost 20 years now, and I love their $5,000 tickets. I once got spit on by accident by Lars in the Snake Pit once, and afterward, I started randomly speaking Danish like I have tourettes and deleting pirated stuff from my friends' computers. Haven't been the same since. But next world tour. I'm there. I had to drive 6 hours to NJ for their last. Worth it.

If you want emotion and uniqueness, I’d recommend listening to Fixxxer from Metallica’s 40th Anniversary Concert. It tells the story of James Hetfield breaking away from the constant struggles and hardships of his upbringing and trying to heal himself. It’s a criminally underrated masterpiece and definitely one of the most unique compositions of Metallica’s catalog.

To me, the sound and style of both this and Lux Aeterna hearken back to their first album. For a trip into their original sound, I would suggest Four Horsemen, Whiplash, or Seek & Destroy. The whole album is good, but those 3 are still popular and Seek & Destroy is a part of their regular set list. I don't list the album name, due to some people getting banned for using it.
