Is the NEW PXG Black Ops driver something special?

Obviously there are a lot of new drivers that are being reviewed last week and this week; being a bit of an equipment geek I’m loving it. What I really like about your reviews is your game and age are the significantly more relevant and similar to me/my game than almost every other reviewer out there. For most things I’m looking to learn, this was spot on, thank you! This driver and the new Ping 10k are the 2 drivers I’m the most interested in testing as of now.

Andy, I've been waiting for your review today; I'm about in the same range as you in terms of game and your opinion is always spot-on. I'm going to get fitted in about 2 weeks; going to give up my Ping for PXG -- moved over to the PXG irons last year and are loving them. I appreciate your insight on sound and feel, and comparing outside vs. trackman; you're right, you need to experience both. Keep the reviews coming!!!

Way too expensive. If PXG wanna get serious in the driver market they need to compete Cobra / Wilson / Mizuno prices.

Thanks for the review Andy…I had just ordered the Black Ops from PXG with the Cypher shaft…I have them in my irons as well Gen 5 XF…went with those because they were 12 yds longer than anything else we tried with a 7 iron. It’s a very comfortable shaft for sure. Now I’ll really be chomping at the bit for it to arrive!

Great bit of wisdom on driver fitting approach Andy - it's so easy to go all out on speed if you don't have to worry about where the ball really ends up. Better be realistic to have more fun on the course later.

Not seeing your usual customary fade with the Black Ops Andy.....I'm very intrigued by this driver. i love the gloss finish myself and is really selling it to me looks wise. I own several PXG Clubs and I only have positive feedback about the overall experience. I can't recommend their Customer Service highly enough. I ordered PXG irons direct via email communication with Thomas from the sales team. He gave great advice and I managed to pick irons in specs agreed and guess what, they did exactly what he said they would. I might wait until ordering the Black Ops as you can be guaranteed that PXG will run a Flash Sale and we will likely get it half price. The Black Ops is getting good feedback across the board from KZbinrs and Magazines alike.....there is something there for us to make sure we consider it. I can see it ousting my trusty Tsi2 from the bag as let's face it....who doesn't want mid/high launch, low spin & forgiveness in a sleek & shiny package. I'm sold !!

Just booked a full bag fit with a PXG fitter near me for next Friday - VERY excited to try the new lineup. I have the Gen 5 XF, and genuinely love it (I'm with you on preference for matte tops, btw), but I desperately need (want...) new woods, so am very excited to see how those perform as well. I'm happy with my Caley irons (thrilled, to be honest), but have always wanted to hit PXG's irons, so this felt like the perfect opportunity to do it all at once! Love the content - thanks again!

I bought a pxg gen 4 0311xf driver on sale before Xmas. I cut it down to 43.5” and added some weight to the head. It is really fantastic and feels wonderful. I’ve let a few of my low handicap friends use it and it outperformed their fitted drivers. I will be adding pxg woods and hybrids next.

I like the weighting adjustment options, and the overall design/look of the club but, like you And, I wish they had retained the matt crown. It could have been on the list of drivers to try this year.

Great review. I love to see that you are hitting the Cypher. I think it's a super underrated shaft. It swings and loads easier than the Tensei AV Blue (I have both) and it launches higher and dispersion is just as good if not better. I've cut mine down too and I've hit so many ridiculously straight bullets with it that they look like they are way below my handicap level. And I bet you will also find that near the end of the round where you are more tired, you can still reliably load the Cypher for still excellent shots. Looking forward to the hybrid review, as I just bagged two more Gen6 XFs in December at the new lowered price, and those hybrids already feel like they are on steroids. I love the matte black so even if Gen6 is better, I would not buy that hybrid (or this shiny driver, for that matter, I will suffer with my Gen5 a little longer, lol).

The shaping underneath the club is quite Taylormade. No bad thing in my opinion. I agree that a matt finish is preferable.

I use PXG clubs so I know that the build quality is very good, but I am interested to know if that same build quality is being maintained including the club head cover. Did you test both Black Ops and Black Ops Tour 1? If so what were your thoughts comparing the two? I agree with you, I would prefer a matt black top.

It's impossible to buy a driver of the shelf and get optimum performance. Obviously the faster the club head is going when it meets the ball the further it will travel. But simply a shaft is paramount in achieving maximum distance. Is tickled me how many of us go to buy a driver and have no idea what our club head speed even is😢

I have a serious concern about new drivers. When compared sans emotional reactions, drivers don't really offer substantial improvements year over year. Golfers may actually play better if they don't keep changing to the newer equipment.
