I always thought it made a lot of sense that Redstone would be powering a different color light than it is physically and that is why its put around like that, it was janky looking sure, wasn't a problem really. But now the light is red for some reason, when it doesn't actually make sense that it would have to be red at all since Redstone powers other lights as well. So it feels like people complained enough to the point the games makes less sense at the end of the day, I don't really care what one is actually used though as long as the actual light put off is the same. Also the new one does look better cuz of the janky outline before like you said.

I definitely think it's a good change to make the Redstone torch actually red, but I think the reason I don't like it as much is because the solid cube when I'm used to the old torch just having the 0-thickness rectangles coming off of it, and the inside I think should be a darker red rather than pink. I think I could get used to it though.

For those people wanting to understand computer graphics a bit more: Inverted means the *normals are pointing inwards* instead of outwards. The reason this is important is because your GPU is optimized for drawing surfaces (triangles) and we don't have to do fancy math to get this effect.

the thing is, glowing red things have yellow in the middle as the more glowy part. like thats just how red lights look. the white and grayish red in the middle looks wrong because when we look at a glowing red light that is implied to be firelike, we expect it to be like fire with orange and yellow, not like a red LED.

you're thinking of things that are glowing due to heat. This redstone torch model is probably supposed to look more like a neon light than a fire. Neon lights are more white near the center, just like this new texture.

I like the new outline but they just straight up changed it from being the normal torch texture to PINK. if you remove the red outline its not red at all, its now the pinkstone torch its pretty clear they did it in the most lazy way possible (made it mono color and set it to hue 0) which is why it looks pink. if they put in effort it would've actually looked red

This is a very common optical illusion which is taken into account in many aspects of life including the font you're reading right now but somehow mojang didn't think of it.

Yeah, I don’t know. I liked how the original redstone torch had the red frays surrounding it, making it a lot more visually interesting. Those frays are also 1:1 with the pixels on the torch, making it more even. The new one looks like a corporate redesign.

that red along the bottom is to make the glow effect work. That "glow" is just an inverted cube, so without those extra red pixels you'd see the brown stick part clipping into the cube. Also, the pinkness is to make it seem bright. Look up pictures of red LEDs, you'll see that the middle is pink or white and only the outer glow is pure red.

the reason I dislike the torch the change is that it breaks resource packs that utilized the old torch model, but that's easy enough to fix by swapping the models out for the old ones. the problem now is that after 5 years Mojang still hasn't fixed the bug that broke transparency on some blocks like the paintings, and with 24w34a they broke the workaround resource packs had used to fix it.

I think people don't like the new texture because nothing else in the game has this system to it. The old redstone torch was made with an existing system that was already established; placed items can have intersecting 2d planes. Tall grass, flowers, saplings, etc. The redstone torch did as well, except in a cube, so it made sense. I think the new texture is cool, but it still takes an approach that is different than the other torches. There's red pixels on the shaft of the torch and there's a rendered cube on it which no other textures have. It makes it look very sterile and un-minecrafty. It sounds stupid that this is considering debating in a comment, but Mojang has spent over 10 years making the game world very precisely, so whenever a slight little thing like this steps outside that world, it breaks peoples illusion a little bit. I think if they reduced the opacity of the cube and made it a darker red, it'd be reminiscent of the glowing effect that entities have. Or, they could make it like the slime block- a block that has a transparent outer shell and an inner opaque one. That would stay in-world and probably make more sense. Or it could look horrible, I don't know.

I think why it looks so cursed is that there's still an outline to it. It isn't just a recolored torch, it has sort of a bubble around it similar to the old texture but now the middle part of it is a red-ish color as well. Perhaps if they remove the outer layer and also made it a bit more red, it would look better.

I know the old programmer art was exactly that, programmer art, but i can see notch in his basement making redstone torches like "eh, dont feel like redoing the texture, I'll just add a red glow so they look red" and never getting around to changing it later. He probably saw that tweet and was like "finally"

i like it being red, but i dont like the type of red it is. coming from someone who makes texture packs, it seems too light/desaturated compared to the redstone dust colors and it doesnt match. also the fact that its a cube throws me off. thats why imo it looks cursed

I got some of my own if u wanna start there, tho theyre not all very good lol. besides that, id say just look at what other packs do and replicate that. If you wanna learn how to make better textures then general pixel art tutorials are good as well
