To answer your question about the creeper not blowing, typically creepers need direct line of sight to target you. They were punching it around corners to keep breaking that line of sight, thus canceling the detonation repeatedly.

I've started playing in beta 1.6.6 and it was wild. In 1.7 pistons got added and then people came up with new stuff. Its wild thinking I've would have started later and missed out on some mods and modpacks, that got abandoned. Also there is something called adventure craft.
