Your shots are easily doable not just with a D850 but also pretty much most of the older cameras for the past 10 years or so. It is more of the photographer and not the gear itself, cheers~ ;)

The Canon situation is very similar to this Nikon one it seems. The files from those last batches of DSLRs was so good! I had the 5DIV and the image quality was the best I'd ever seen. I could push and pull the files and shoot at high ISOs and the dynamic range and low noise was great. Never an issue! However, the focusing with my Sigma Art was quite hit and miss and the video was not really fun to use. I got the EOS-R and it was more fun to use, and the autofocus was WAY more reliable. My adapted Sigma Art lenses were SO much better on the mirrorless system! However, there was one negative. Despite people saying that the EOS-R had the same 5DIV sensor, the image quality was not the same. The R files lost about 1/2 stop or more in so far as ISO noise was concerned. Also the dynamic range was not as good as the 5D and the files would fall apart more easily when pushed or pulled. I would find banding noise in the R files that never existed at all in the 5DIV files. I've heard this can be the same in the Nikon z6 and z7 files (where the D850 did not have this issue). Apparently it has something to do with signal noise from the on sensor AF found on mirrorless cameras. I've had so many people argue with me that the R and 5DIV images were identical but I know better (and even people like Tony Northrup have shown exactly what I was seeing). I shot for 15 years using a 1D2/3 and 5DIV setup and never had banding. The R was the first cam I ever had with this issue (and I tried 3 of them). I played with some of the R5 files (I think from one of your first videos) and the issue is remedied and I think the R5 is the perfect Canon camera that I've always wanted. Sadly the price is insane now ($5500 here in Canada). The pics you took here are fantastic, as always. For years now I've been blown away by just how consistently amazing your pics are. And your presets really seem to the only ones that I've seen that actually do what they advertise (and then some) for almost any image.

Thank you so much!! My goodness that price for an r5 is crazy!! I do think it’s the best canon camera I’ve ever used. I do agree the eos r files aren’t even close to the r5. I’ve had plenty of great shots with the r but my exposure had to be dead on.

I have a D850, a Z7II (full spectrum converted), and a Z9. For normal, mid aperture portraits of non-moving people, they are all equally good, giving very similar quality files. The Z9 excels at shallow depth of field portraits, especially with moving subjects. As long as you're not doing that, a D850 is a far better value.

I still shoot with my D850. I’m selective about when I use it because of the file sizes. I also adapt my F mount lenses to my Z6. The D850 is clutch when shooting fast action or fast movements. I sued almost exclusively from the optical view finder, very seldom from live view

The Nikon 105mm 1.4 E is simply the best rendering lens for portraits I've ever used. I shouldn't have gotten rid of mine when I moved to Z and hoping there's a similar S version coming up. The 85mm 1.2 should be arriving soon? Not going back to DSLRs though...

The bokeh on the 105 has literally made me nauseous. Morons who haven't mastered the craft wring their hands over a camera. Photographers worry about their PHOTOGRAPHS. I shoot mostly with film when I can, many of those cameras only have aperture, shutter speed and no battery. With some film, it costs $3 per click. Spray and pray is for hamburgers. I don't use a dslr for video. I'm a PHOTOGRAPHER. I also love the 46mp film scans I get with the d850. Mastering the craft "is the way to go."
@SNAPAVELI

@@mrca2004 there are plenty of different styles of photography though. You are entitled to your opinion. I think film is beautiful, but there is a difference in spray and pray and catching the moment when the expression is the best. Use what you love

I mostly shoot Sony now, but I still use my D850 for certain things. When it works properly, the photos out of it are better than my Sony's. But I'm paranoid about the autofocus. Sometimes it works better than my Sony A7R3, but other times it will whiff nearly every time. Haven't figured out exactly why yet. My SIgma 50mm f/1.4 Art works pretty much flawlessly on the D850, but a gen 1 Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 is practically useless. Tamron G2 70-200mm f/2.8 works nearly flawlessly. I agree a lot with what you said about the viewfinders. I like optical viewfinders, but when I use them now for things other than sports, I miss the electronic viewfinders in the Sony cameras. I hate the live view on the D850 for most things. And yes video is absolutely crap. If all you shoot is photos, it's still worth it in 2022 if you can live without a lot of the conveniences of mirrorless.

I am loving my D780, and I wish Nikon would make a D880 DSLR with 45mp (update from D850) with z7ii PDAF sensor (however seems unlikely with z7ii and now z8 on horizon). Regarding blackout, when you go to liveview mode in D780, AF focus in near instant as its sensor is the Z6. OVF is black in liveview as mirror raised. When shutter is taken, the black LED screen blacks out for a fraction of a second (not as long as the D850 shown in the video). probably for duration of shutter time. Also the screen blacks out again for a fraction of second while processing image which is very quick. You can also click with your finger on back screen to move focus points quickly. Also in liveview, you can use face and eye detect so framing your shot in liveview as you shoot is simple and continuous tracking on eyes. None of this blackout happens while not using live view and when in OVF photo still mode, as OVF is always open in still mode so no blackout on OVF and processed image appears on back LCD almost instantly for review. TheD780 is using the processor and sensor of Z6, and also uses a BSI sensor which yields a bit more detail than my D750 I also have as Raw files are bigger. From 22mb raws in D750 to 28mb raws on D780 on average for this 24MP sensor. If they used 2 processors like in z6ii this short blackout might be gone if they made a D780ii with z6ii and 2 processors. But will Nikon? Nikon D780 is a great hybrid camera for stills and video and for those who like OVFs and larger body of a DSLR for pro work with lots of external button control. This camera literally has dual focusing systems, fast tracking phase detect in stills, and good PDAF in video. If Nikon made a D880 DSLR with z7ii sensor inside it would likely sell very well, as the D780 has been very popular in North America. Why does Nikon focus on making mirrorless, well for less parts in body, mirrorless can be less expensive to manufacture than DSLRs, so more profit, and there are some tech advantages also. Less so though, with hybrid cameras like D780 with dual focusing systems!!

Great video, thanks man. I had similar issues with my Canon 5DIV and sent it to repair shop to get the AF checked. They found the AF sensors were dirty and now it focuses very accurately, not as good as a mirrorless, but good enough to allow me to keep using it. Is it possible that the AF sensors were dirty on your D850?

@SNAPAVELI 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I’m not sure! My Nikon glass is pretty good with minimal af fine tune on the d850, the sigma glass is just super inconsistent. It could be back focusing for a few shots and then front focusing. On mirrorless it’s fine though
