Fun fact! Watching the recording of this in the studio with Jody benson. The director kept telling her. “ no. More held back. Don’t belt. Don’t be loud. Quieter. Hold it back. . He wanted the song to be very reserved and almost like a quiet inner monologue with herself. Haha Jody kept shaking her head yes but you can clearly see she was thinking “ any more held back and reserved you don’t even need me 😅

Jodi Bensons was in musical theatre her whole life and couldve easily hit the same notes Halle did but POYW was sang that way intentionally. Howard Ashman, who was a genius, trained Jodi on how he envisioned this song to be. He didnt want Jodi to hit big notes and to keep it more like a dialogue that Ariel is having to herself. He felt just focusing on bigger notes, took away from the song and wanted Jodi to focus more on expression, exaggerated words, and taking bigger breaths as he felt doing this was more powerful to show how Ariels desires/how sad she was than just another great song with strong vocals. Jodi has said that whenever she sings this song, she can still hear Howard in her ear and always trys to do it just as he wanted her to.

Sorry, Halle’s tone is better and younger for Ariel. Even when ppl put Halle’s version over the animated it still works. Maybe he wanted her to do it that way, but it did not convey deep sadness at all, it works for an animated version but live actions are real actors who have to convey a lot, there’s not a way to do the same subtlety with a live action nor would anyone want to. Idk man, that version didn’t make ppl cry and Halle’s version gave ppl chills.

@@sashav.3189 i have to disagree.. when you say this, you’re literally talking about one if Disneys biggest songs for the past 34 years… it resonated with people for a reason and Howard knew exactly what he was doing. Halle has a great voice, but I didn’t feel the passion in Halle’s version… it was great for like an end credits cover, kind of like Ariana Grande with Beauty & the beast.

Sorry but the old one sounds dated. While good for it's time it definitely would not do as well as what the Halle version does now - it would not bring new viewers/listeners in. Not to mention there is a ton of people that feel the emotion in the new one, so yeah, I understand it's just your opinion though.

Jodi’s is more than 34 years old and one of Disneys biggest, which Billboard just named the greatest disney song of all time for a reason…. And that is not an opinion but a fact.

I love both Jodi's and Halle's versions smm, but trying to discredit Halle by saying that you couldn't feel the passion in her voice is just plain ABSURD as well as comparing it to Ariana and Johns cover. She clearly conveyed more passion than Jodi and that's okay as Jodi was very rigid because of the producers directions. You seem to forget that Halle's version resonated with millions as well. I am obsessed with like both of them. The original will always be my favorite Disney movie. But I really love how they captured it in live action. Just everything is my favorite. I really have nothing to complain about honestly. Of course there’s things I wish they kept or changed but I think they did a fantastic job and I’m obsessed.

This is just like "I Will Always Love You". Dolly's original is great and Whitney's cover is different and great. Both delivery served different purposes; can't choose between them! Howard Ashman had a particular vision and heavily directed Jodie to the breath for the original. Halle's is a refreshing update. Both wonderful to come back to 💕

One of the things a lot of ppl miss in poor unfortunate souls is, Ursula was being deceitful throughout the song including the “body language” etc etc. small side note about part of your world, Ariel was singing “part of that world” only in the reprise on the rock does she sing “part of your world” just a detail that is often overlooked, leading to miss nuance of the story. Here's the thing if your gonna adapt a TV series or a movie that held up so well throughout the years and is beloved by all and made made changes that doesn't live up to that respective IP with the same characters, world building and storyline. Your going to compare it! There's no way around it especially when they made changes that weren't necessary nor add anything to the story. While the Live action is ok it doesn't live up to the original Disney adaption nor surpassed it. Most of them didn't. So your gonna have complaints

I saw this in theaters, i was 4. It is one of the oldest memories i have. I had to go to the bathroom, I clearly remember turning the corner back into the theater and seeing Ursula's ghost hands taking Ariel's voice. The echoing "keep singing!!" So so scary. But i loved it. Ask 4 or 7 or 37 year old me what's my favorite color the answer is "Red, because of Ariel's hair." I am the fan this remake was made for. Part of Your world is one of the nightly lullabies I sing to my kiddos and so it is the only song of the 2023 that doesn't hit right. Its beautiful and I appreciate it for what it is but i can't quite sing along. Lastly I cried for several minutes when a certain cameo happened. It was subtle, sweet and perfect.

I loved both but imo the original will always be better. The remake was awesome in its own way, dont get me wrong, but there was a lot from the original such as the beautiful colors(the remake still had a realistic amount of color), scenery, character expressions, ect. that either wasnt added or just didnt translate well into live action. But for what the remake is, is still great. Just a bit watered down (pun intended lol) imo but still a good film, i just like the original more 🤷

That’s actually not a boner that is his knees. If you look at him when the birds are coming towards them you will see his knees. That fact that it’s the villain telling Ariel to attract Eric sexually tells you it’s wrong. Personally, I prefer not building Part of Your World right away. Adding the build up early on leaves less momentum available later and makes sound more like someone reciting a song. Howard Ashman certainly knew when to hold back.

I think Jodi Benson was born to voice Ariel. She has that youthful, playful and sweet sound in her voice. She even sang a song about Disneyland in a musical adaptation of MGM's "Smile"

For me, while I appreciate all the wonderful performances of the live action, the original has an irreplaceable charm. I appreciate how the animators provided great lighting and camera work with the storyboard, not to mention how well the voice actors delivered each of their lines with so much emotion that was a bit lacking on the live action. The way each character had a different intonation for particular lines, it was truly a masterpiece. I'm not pro-animated version here, I'm just pointing out what I observed

If you would like to know about somebody who has literally had their voice taken away, just watch “Celine, Dion, intimate portrait with Joan London. I won’t say anymore here, as you can look it up for yourself, and figure out why Celine Dion would be a good Ariel. She still does that Tuesday at times, doesn’t speak at all… No laughing, no, coughing, nothing. Leave me the short of it, she had to do this in order to protect your voice. I won’t give anymore, but she can still sing to this day due to that and the vocal exercises she was pretty much forced to do, 45 minutes each day precisely.

Actually, Halle is 23 in real life and Jonah is 28, they have a five years gap, bigger than Ariel and Eric… Halle auditioned for the role when she was 18, was cast at 19, recorded the songs at 19-20 and filmed the scenes when she was around 20-21, while Jonah must have been 25-26… From the time she first auditioned it has been close to five years So yeah, I agree that Halle has young features and looked younger than 20-21 when they filmed (she still looks younger than 23), but her and Jonah still have quite the age gap…

When she says he looks older than Ariel in the animation version, she means there look to he a 10 year age gap. Meaning cartoon Ariel is 16 and the prince almost looks mid-late 20's (Like 26+) THAT is an age gap. 5 years is nothing when both people are in their 20's.

We live on Lake Tamarack, and my mom used to joke that she used to check us for gills before we went to school. Every summer where are usually in or around water somewhere. I just love the voice of Ursula here, and one of my own characters from fiction… Sort of transaction numbers, work, as the middle name of Ursula. However, she is a lot nicer than the sea witch… Even though she is the daughter of God, wearing clothing that is not Greek, bbut Powermonic. I love how in the live action it wasn’t daddy I love this man I’ve never met. This Ariel came across much more mature to me bc as an adult, I cringe when I hear Ariel say she loves a man she’s never even talked to. The live action was much better to me. It kinda ruined the animation for me bc now it kind feels flat. Everything was much bigger, the music was better it had alot more funny moments, they built Eric and Ariel’s friendship and built their love story, Vanessa was amazing, Eric’s backstory made sense, there’s a couple scenes I wish they had included but I’ve never gone to the theater to see a movie more than once but I have gone now 5 times with this one.

So many people are flocking to the comments to rudely put down the live action because they think it’s going to bury the original which isn’t the case at all. The original will always be charming and cute. It wasn’t too complex in its storytelling which was great for little kids. The nostalgia will always be there. Jodi’s talent is still very apparent! Halle and this remake brought a fresh retelling of the story. Now that I’m much older though, I appreciate how they fleshed out characters more, gave them romance (which was built up more) and also purpose in their lives outside of that romance. I also love how more complex POYW is musically and also emotionally. It reflected the live action story better imo. I think we can all agree that Scuttlebutt was not needed though. I’m sure it could make some little kids laugh but ehhhhh I would prefer to have it cut LOL

Tbh, its just my opinion (and pls dont fight with me on it or try to change my mind in any way) but i like the live action WAY more than the animated version and its cause they changed all the things i didn't like about the animated version (not original cause original is Hans Christian Andersen's tale) about how ariel is MARRIED at 16?! She fights with his dad about how "daddy i love him!!" She kinda acted spoiled in that clip, falling in love with a person just cause of his looks...cause she never met him how would she actually KNOW him? and how she made that decision in anger and told Sebastian "why dont you tell my father? You're good at that" and how she easily chooses the "man" over her family when Ursula mentions "that's right! But, you'll have your man, life's full of tough choices innit?"...and then on land, she's shown very dumb-like? And how she's a literal MERMAID at the end and couldn't jump back in the water when she was at the bottom of the tornado thing? She could've flopped over to the water(as funny as that sounds😂) And how Erik was standing over her when she turned back into a mermaid...he looked disgusted 😭i liked the live action where he hugs her and holds her close and tries to back Ursula off...and btw, it was never mentioned in the film that Ursula was after Triton until the very end when she mentions it herself? It was always implied to me that she was after Ariel or the prince for some reason? Cause, "Although i dont blame you, he IS quite a catch isnt he?😏" And the whole verse of poor unfortunate souls about how a woman who is silent gets the guy otherwise she doesnt cause he doesn't like her for her conversation, he likes her when she is silent and knows "body language" And how Ariel didnt even apologize and had no regret on her face whatsoever 😔 that animated version gave me "spoiled girl gets what she wants in the end, happily ever after, after all" vibes and i didn't like that....I LOVE the live action version!❤

I haven't watched the old version in so long and I definitely need to fix that but regarding the part where Ursula tries to convince Ariel that she doesn't need her voice in order to attract Eric, I actually think that that part was good in terms of showing how manipulative Ursula is and how she demeans Ariel's worth as a person, specifically. This is her pretty much saying "You don't need your voice, men don't want women who are talkers, they like women who look good and can respond to them", which also comes off more as Ariel's own distinct feature being her voice and therefore also her personality (which comes off partly through her voice and speech) not being important at all and wouldn't be important to Eric. This part is cut from the live action likely because they probably didn't want it to be taken the wrong way, but [slight spoiler: I think it should've been kept in because in the live action you particularly notice how Eric DOES in fact listen to Ariel, even when she isn't capable of speaking. He goes wherever she'd like to go, he answers any curiosities she has, and they both respond to each other in a specific way. So that imo goes against Ursula's would-be point about her voice not being important but only her body, when Eric falls in love with Ariel beyond just the beauty of her voice]

Prince Eric is 21 in the animated and live action. I was taken aback by that as well. The remake is superior in every way for me. They build on Ariel and Eric's relationship so well and they really show them falling in love without the need for her ability to speak. It's beautiful.

I find it weird that the concept of "love at first sight" is now considered "messed up" in american culture... Ariel isn't a pole dancer trying to deceive Eric into spending money on her. A person personality isn't just conveyed through words either... Actions speak louder than words as the saying goes... At the end of the day, Ariel fell in love with Eric just by looking at him from a distance, and she believed Eric would feel the same way if he had the same opportunity.

I already saw the new one and let me tell You that there is no comparison with the original, the new one is a half and half for me not too good and not too bad and now I appreciated the original 1989 Even more ❤because they change many things from the original that is my opinion of the 2023 movie and the 1989 is a Masterpiece🎉 and the 2023 one is a different movie for me but like I Say before is 50/50 for me for some many things that are different and one of them is that they eliminated all the Classic and beautiful dresses😢and the customs for all the characters were different, Ariel in the original is My favorite character 😍❤. It's just so much more enjoyable movie-wise with the songs from the Original. It's hard because it is already established & known so it just feels right. But I like my broadway on broadway & my soundtracks to go perfectly w the movies. The new didn't fit for me at all. Although MAJOR props to Melissa McCarthy, she killed it when it was very unexpected. Wasn't expecting to like her as Ursula as much as I really did. She did great and was the only character who felt authentic playing off the original movie- sorry, that'w how it felt as I watched! No one else felt like they were playing off the originals, save for maybe scuttle as well. lol .... The new one was too disconnected & weird for me. And the very odd way the actresses were waving their arms about & bobbing their heads? , creeepy...

I think we need to stop comparing both Ariel singing voices. Jodi Benson's voice was not made to be this big boom and dramatic type of pop singer voice, even then it made a massive impression to millions of people, including Halle Bailey herself who adores the Little Mermaid and was inspired by the OG. Halle Bailey's voice is indeed more powerful and dramatic, and she nailed it perfectly. She truly is a new Ariel for the modern generation. But let's not take away from Jodi gorgeous and talentend singing for not having a voice that like a pop star has.

I far prefer the original Part of Your World. But it's a stylistic preference, not a matter of talent or song. Halle Bailey has a beautiful voice, but I didn't like the direction. It’s like she was told to do a power ballad, when in reality Part of Your World is like a private monologue. That's my preference anyway. I thought it more interesting and more suited to the plot.

The little mermaid was always my favourite Disney movie. I saw the live action version and it was still as captivating, but the ‘89 version was my childhood. As for the concerns of the animated version, has anyone read the original HCA story? Fairytales way back in the day were awful. Cinderella, the little mermaid, sleeping beauty and so on… Disney made those films in to bright, fun things with incredible music. And now they’re recreating them to be more appropriate for today, like they did from the original source material. Does nobody just enjoy anything anymore without “deep diving”?

Personally i feel like the scenes are way more iconic in the original,prettier outfits and WAY more magical but i personally prefer the character development the live action brings. You get to know better the characters,ariel's and erics relationship is built un such a beautiful and natural WAY in the live action while in the original IS just too quick and unrealistic

I think it’s because she isn’t in the US or another English speaking country (not sure if they have a subbed version instead where she is and wouldn’t be able to see it in English…). So she has to wait until it comes to streaming. Audrey is also very scared of deep water, so watching it on a huge screen might not be the best idea…, but don’t worry streaming also plays a part in the overall success of a film. Although box office is better…

She actually explained why in other videos she has made. She wants to do a “first time reaction” video for her patreon followers where she watches the entire movie for the very first time with her genuine reactions to the new film and its music. She can’t have genuine first time reactions to the film if she already watched it in theaters on her own. And she can’t take a camera into the movie theater and talk through the whole film in the theater expressing her reactions while watching it. So it does make sense. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Your missing the whole point 1: Ariels friends are just trying to help her Appreciate Your Friends 2: Ariel’s voice represent her internally 3:it doesn’t give a bad message to young ppl in the end Eric realizes she’s the one by her voice .. that’s why he fell in love w her in the first place he didn’t fall in love w her looks u ppl don’t even know what your talking about 4: and clearly as kids watching this we knew Ursula was bad kids these days need to be exposed to Villains so they be careful and know what to watch out for.. the message behind the little mermaid is Ariel saved Eric from drowning and woke him up by using her voice, but when Ursula takes away her voice, Eric couldn’t fall in love with just her looks and wanted to find the girl with the voice - meanwhile she was standing right in front of him. Giving up on her voice was a mistake. She really didn’t realize how important it was until it was gone. You have a voice embrace it Love bother versions of the movie but for me the connection between her and Eric in the remake was not there the whole romantic feeling was lost

The original is a classic, but the ways they "fix" it and change it so much that now I think they broke this classic. Jodi Benson said so herself that the song "Part of your World" should be sung with emotion, it's not about how many different skills you can put in there but the emotion conveyed through singing the song, which I think only Sierra Boggess got the point after Jodi Benson. The animated version was that way with the romance part because they only focused on the important parts you need to know for the story, there are hints in the animated version that they did more things in that one day tour around the kingdom than what we see on screen, they don't need to tell you how everything goes, our brain fills in the blank and that's what Disney movies are made for: Imagination. You don't need to tell me every detail when what you want to tell me is a fairytale. The voice actors delivered the energy with the lines and songs, which I think is really lacking in the live action. I think the live action version really shouldn't mess with what Ursula sang or said, she's the villain, which we should keep in mind that she didn't have good intentions, her goal is to get more power, control, and she manipulate people to make deals and she will sabotage the deal if she know someone who almost fulfilled their side of the bargain. The way there is a distinction between villain and heroine/heroes is because the animated version is teaching the children by showing what behaviors are good, what behaviors are bad and you should follow the good behaviors. The classic version feel real, growing up watching the animated version, I always feel for Ariel and I follow her emotions throughout the animation, but with the live action, the emotions are really lacking, the actress need some mime classes because I didn't feel the strong emotions like I did with the animated version with how the lines were delivered in the live action, it sounds like she just have the lines there and she tried to say the lines as flat as possible. And they destroyed the cute romance with the live action and they destroyed Eric's character along with it, I don't feel sorry at all now the live action version is failing because they very well deserve it by having no creativity at all.

No idea what movie you saw, but it definitely wasn't the new live action Little Mermaid. Halle imbues her character with emotion at every turn. As for "destroy[ing] Eric's character" from the original, WHAT CHARACTER? He had NONE. Now, he does, along with interests similar to Ariel's to help him bond with her. They actually develop this relationship much more deeply in the live action. Also, the live action isn't failing in any way. It's already surpassed 200 million domestically in less than 2 weeks, and by this weekend will pass domestically what the original made in multiple releases worldwide. It's already passed 1/3 of a billion dollars worldwide.

@@DavidHHH99 Well I'm not sure what movie you saw either because Sierra Boggess is experienced with the singing while also acting sort of thing. And they need much more than 200 million to break even, count in the production cost and marketing cost and the fact that there might be more cost regarding the international interviews and whatever stuff they're doing, they need way more to break even and be profitable. Eric is actually the first Disney prince to have a character, he's easygoing, he's compassionate, sweet, noble, brave, kind, confident and every part of his character is screaming that he's husband material, and LOOK at what they turned him into in the live action. In the live action, they took the guy that he is, every bit of a husband material and turned him into a pathetic wimp who is filled with self doubt. The relationship in live action version? Oh geez they're not even going for the love aspect when they're doing the live action because they said they want to change the aspect that Ariel going up to the surface just for a man when in the original animated version, the man isn't her only motivation, The Little Mermaid was made in a time that they decided it's time to give both the hero and the heroine more role in the story, and Eric is the first prince to have a personality, a character, ideals, hobbies and all of that like a normal human being. You can keep dreaming, but this movie is going down anyway and people will always remember how great the animated Eric is.

there and only FEW things in the live action remake that are "better". The movie is not as good as the original! And it has nothing to do with Halle, she did good. everything else is NOT GOOD! My partner, who hasn't seen the original ever, had better time than me. My brain constantly compared everything with the OG... and the OG is untouchable, even if you nitpick the Ariel's age and she giving up voice for a guy and Ursula's lines in poor unfortunate souls... Remember, it's a fantasy story set in fantasy land happening in the long time ago. No need to force in real world political and woke agendas on it.

I had a shit childhood and one of the only things good about it was the animated movie. As a pale redhead who sings, feels out of place, and puts love first, Ariel was MY princess. She was the only one I saw myself in. But us white redheads don't matter, hence why it's our characters constantly taken away and given to someone else instead of making new characters for others. And I hate seeing brainwashed people support the crap that Disney keeps pooping out.
